A measure centrality index for systematic empirical comparison of consciousness theories

Consciousness science is marred by disparate constructs and methodologies, making it challenging to systematically compare theories. This foundational crisis casts doubts on the scientific character of the field itself. Addressing it, we propose a framework for systematically comparing consciousness theories by introducing a novel inter-theory classification interface, the Measure Centrality Index (MCI). Recognizing its gradient distribution, the MCI assesses the degree of importance a specific empirical measure has for a given consciousness theory. We apply the MCI to probe how the empirical measures of the Global Neuronal Workspace Theory (GNW), Integrated Information Theory (IIT), and Temporospatial Theory of Consciousness (TTC) would fare within the context of the other two. We demonstrate that direct comparison of IIT, GNW, and TTC is meaningful and valid for some measures like Lempel-Ziv Complexity (LZC), Autocorrelation Window (ACW), and possibly Mutual Information (MI). In contrast, it is problematic for others like the anatomical and physiological neural correlates of consciousness (NCC) due to their MCI-based differential weightings within the structure of the theories. In sum, we introduce and provide proof-of-principle of a novel systematic method for direct inter-theory empirical comparisons, thereby addressing isolated evolution of theories and confirmatory bias issues in the state-of-the-art neuroscience of consciousness.

Different Approximation Methods for Calculation of Integrated Information Coefficient in the Brain during Instrumental Learning

The amount of integrated information, Φ, proposed in an integrated information theory (IIT) is useful to describe the degree of brain adaptation to the environment. However, its computation cannot be precisely performed for a reasonable time for time-series spike data collected from a large count of neurons.. Therefore, Φ was only used to describe averaged activity of a big group of neurons, and the behavior of small non-brain systems. In this study, we reported on ways for fast and precise Φ calculation using different approximation methods for Φ calculation in neural spike data, and checked the capability of Φ to describe a degree of adaptation in brain neural networks. We show that during instrumental learning sessions, all applied approximation methods reflect temporal trends of Φ in the rat hippocampus. The value of Φ is positively correlated with the number of successful acts performed by a rat. We also show that only one subgroup of neurons modulates their Φ during learning. The obtained results pave the way for application of Φ to investigate plasticity in the brain during the acquisition of new tasks.

Quantifying the Autonomy of Structurally Diverse Automata: A Comparison of Candidate Measures

Should the internal structure of a system matter when it comes to autonomy? While there is still no consensus on a rigorous, quantifiable definition of autonomy, multiple candidate measures and related quantities have been proposed across various disciplines, including graph-theory, information-theory, and complex system science. Here, I review and compare a range of measures related to autonomy and intelligent behavior. To that end, I analyzed the structural, information-theoretical, causal, and dynamical properties of simple artificial agents evolved to solve a spatial navigation task, with or without a need for associative memory. By contrast to standard artificial neural networks with fixed architectures and node functions, here, independent evolution simulations produced successful agents with diverse neural architectures and functions. This makes it possible to distinguish quantities that characterize task demands and input-output behavior, from those that capture intrinsic differences between substrates, which may help to determine more stringent requisites for autonomous behavior and the means to measure it.
