Abstract
Background Studies have found maternal smoking during pregnancy was linked to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) risk. It is unclear if maternal smoking cessation during pregnancy lowers ADHD and learning disability (LD) risk in offspring. This study aimed to explore the associations between maternal smoking cessation during pregnancy and ADHD and LD risk in offspring. Methods Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2004 (8,068 participants) were used. Logistic regression was used to analyze the associations between maternal smoking and smoking cessation during pregnancy and ADHD and LD risk in offspring. Results Compared to non-smokers' offspring, maternal smoking during pregnancy increased the risk of ADHD (odds ratios [OR] = 2.07, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.67-2.56) and LD (OR = 1.93, 95% CI: 1.61-2.31) in offspring, even if mothers quit smoking later (ORADHD = 1.91, 95%CIADHD: 1.38-2.65, ORLD = 1.65, 95%CILD: 1.24-2.19). Further analysis of the timing of initiation of smoking cessation during pregnancy revealed that, compared to non-smokers' offspring, maternal quitting smoking in the first trimester still posed an increased risk of ADHD (OR = 1.72, 95% CI: 1.41-2.61) and LD (OR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.06-2.17) in offspring. Maternal quitting smoking in the second or third trimester also had a significantly increased risk of ADHD (OR = 2.13, 95% CI: 1.26-3.61) and LD (OR = 1.82, 95% CI: 1.16-2.87) in offspring. Furthermore, maternal smoking but never quitting during pregnancy had the highest risk of ADHD (OR = 2.17, 95% CI: 1.69-2.79) and LD (OR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.70-2.58) in offspring. Interestingly, a trend toward a gradual increase in the risk-adjusted OR for ADHD and LD risk was observed among the three groups: maternal quitting smoking in the first trimester, maternal quitting smoking in the second or third trimester, and maternal smoking but never quitting. Conclusion Maternal smoking cessation in the first trimester still poses an increased risk of ADHD and LD in offspring. Furthermore, it seems that the later the mothers quit smoking during pregnancy, the higher the risk of ADHD and LD in their offspring. Therefore, early intervention of maternal smoking in preconception and prenatal care is vital for offspring neurodevelopment.

Abstract
We examined whether genetic risk for mental illness is associated with known perinatal risk factors for offspring mental illness to determine whether gene-environmental correlation might account for the associations of perinatal factors with mental illness. Among 8983 women with 19,733 pregnancies, we found that genetic risk for mental illness was associated with any smoking during pregnancy [attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and overall genetic risk], breast-feeding for less than 1 month (ADHD, depression, and overall genetic risk), experience of intimate partner violence in the year before the birth (depression and overall genetic risk), and pregestational overweight or obesity (bipolar disorder). These results indicate that genetic risk may partly account for the association between perinatal conditions and mental illness in offspring.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE ADHD symptoms can adversely impact functioning in a range of domains relevant for maternal well-being and fetal development; however, there has been almost no research examining their impact during pregnancy. We aimed to address this gap. METHOD We used data (n = 1,204) from a longitudinal birth cohort study spanning eight countries to address this gap. RESULTS ADHD symptoms in the third trimester of pregnancy were associated with lower social support from family (b = -0.16, p = .031), friends (b = -0.16, p = .024), and significant others (b = -0.09, p = .001); higher stress (b = 0.34, p < .001) and depressive symptoms (b = 0.31, p < .001), and increased likelihood of an unwanted pregnancy (b = 0.30, p = .009). Significant associations with tobacco use (b = 0.36, p = .023) and premature birth (b = 0.35, p = .007) did not survive correction for multiple comparisons and there were no significant associations with alcohol use, low birth weight, or unplanned pregnancy. CONCLUSION Results suggest that women with ADHD symptoms could benefit from earlier, more regular screening for mental health difficulties and greater mental health support during pregnancy.

Abstract
Nicotine is the primary pharmacologic component of tobacco, and its highly addictive nature is responsible for its widespread use and significant withdrawal effects that result in challenges to smoking cessation therapeutics. Nicotine addiction often begins in adolescence and this is at least partially attributed to the fact that adolescent brain is most susceptible to the neuro-inflammatory effects of nicotine. There is increasing evidence for the involvement of microglial cells, which are the brain's primary homeostatic sensor, in drug dependence and its associated behavioral manifestations particularly in the adolescent brain. A hallmark of neuro-inflammation is microglial activation and activation of microglia by nicotine during adolescent development, which may result in long-term addiction to nicotine. This non-systematic review examines multifactorial etiology of adolescent nicotine addiction, neurobiology of nicotine addiction and the potential mechanisms that underlie the effects of nicotine on inflammatory signaling in the microglia, understanding how nicotine affects the adolescent brain. We speculate, that modulating homeostatic balance in microglia, could have promising therapeutic potential in withdrawal, tolerance, and abstinence-related neural adaptations in nicotine addiction, in the adolescent brain. Further, we discuss nicotine addiction in the context of the sensitization-homeostasis model which provides a theoretical framework for addressing the potential role of microglial homeostasis in neural adaptations underlying nicotine abuse.

Abstract
Background Strikingly little research has considered how autistic adults experience pregnancy and parenthood, two key transition periods in adult development with potentially far-reaching implications for physical and psychosocial health outcomes across the lifespan. This article reviews the research on pregnancy and parenthood among autistic adults, to summarize existing research and identify future directions to advance this critical area of study. Methods We conducted a systematic review of the literature on pregnancy and parenthood among autistic adults. Researchers extracted selected articles for key information, including methodology and sample size, study location, demographic characteristics of participants, measurement approaches, and key study findings. Results Overall, we identified 13 studies that used a range of quantitative and qualitative approaches to study pregnancy experiences and outcomes and parenthood among autistic adults. The findings show that autistic adults (1) experience difficulties and dissatisfaction communicating with health care providers throughout pregnancy and birth, (2) are more likely to experience depression during and after pregnancy, and (3) experience higher rates of pregnancy complications, including preterm birth, cesarean delivery, and pre-eclampsia. During parenthood, autistic adults report lower parenting competence, experience parenthood as isolating, have difficulty communicating with professionals about their child and are questioned by providers about their ability to parent, experience high rates of involvement with child protective services, and express a desire for increased parenting support. Autistic adults also reported parenting strengths, including high levels of finding parenthood rewarding and putting their children's needs ahead of their own. Conclusions A key limitation of the literature is the significant lack of sociodemographic diversity among participants, the small number of existing studies, and reliance on cross-sectional mono-method designs. Future research should be conducted in partnership with autistic adults to develop assessment and intervention approaches for supporting pregnancy health and parental well-being among diverse and underserved communities. Lay summary Why is this topic important?: Very little is known about how autistic adults experience pregnancy and parenthood. Better understanding these experiences is important, because pregnancy and parenthood are key transition periods in adult development that are associated with a range of health outcomes later in life.What is the purpose of this article?: This article reviews the existing research on pregnancy and parenthood among autistic adults. We wanted to summarize what is already known, evaluate how that knowledge was created, and consider who has and who has not been included in this research to inform future research. We summarized 13 studies that considered pregnancy or parenthood among autistic adults.What did the authors find about pregnancy among autistic adults?: One study used data from hospital and birth records in Sweden, and showed that autistic women experience higher rates of pregnancy complications, such as preterm birth (early delivery before 37 weeks), cesarean delivery, and pre-eclampsia (a condition defined by high blood pressure during pregnancy). Two studies had autistic and nonautistic adults fill out online surveys about their experiences, and found that autistic adults are more likely to have depression during and after pregnancy, have more difficulty interacting with health care professionals at pregnancy appointments and during the birth process, and feel that information and support services for pregnancy do not always meet their needs. Autistic women also reported that sensory differences can make health care visits during pregnancy especially difficult, and described that they may experience anxiety and confusion when interacting with health care staff.What did the authors find about parenthood among autistic adults?: The research we reviewed showed that autistic adults experience strengths and difficulties in parenting. Many autistic adults found parenthood rewarding, but also felt isolated as parents and had difficulty communicating with health care professionals about their children. Autistic adults also had high rates of interacting with child protective services (CPS). Some research also found that autistic adults had lower self-confidence in parenting, although findings are mixed.What are the recommendations for future research and practice?: We need to develop support strategies to promote pregnancy health and parenting satisfaction in partnership with autistic adults. For example, it may be helpful to develop communication tools that can support autistic adults during pregnancy, labor, and birth. We also recommend that future research develop questionnaires to ask autistic adults about their pregnancy and parenting experiences in sensitive ways, so that in the future providers can regularly ask autistic adults about their support needs. Most importantly, it is critical that future research also include more diverse autistic participants in their research, including racial/ethnic and sexual and gender minorities.How will these findings help autistic adults now or in the future?: We hope that this article will help guide future research that strives to better understand how autistic adults experience pregnancy and parenthood. Ultimately, we believe this research can lead to supports and intervention strategies that can improve pregnancy health and parental well-being for autistic adults.

Abstract
Background The Medical Birth Registry of Norway (MBRN) provides national coverage of all births. While retrieval of most of the information in the birth records is mandatory, mothers may refrain to provide information on her smoking status. The proportion of women with unknown smoking status varied greatly over time, between hospitals, and by demographic groups. We investigated if incomplete data on smoking in the MBRN may have contributed to a biased smoking prevalence. Methods In a study population of all 904,982 viable and singleton births during 1999–2014, we investigated main predictor variables influencing the unknown smoking status of the mothers’ using linear multivariable regression. Thereafter, we applied machine learning to predict annual smoking prevalence (95% CI) in the same group of unknown smoking status, assuming missing-not-at-random. Results Overall, the proportion of women with unknown smoking status was 14.4%. Compared to the Nordic country region of origin, women from Europe outside the Nordic region had 15% (95% CI 12–17%) increased adjusted risk to have unknown smoking status. Correspondingly, the increased risks for women from Asia was 17% (95% CI 15–19%) and Africa 26% (95% CI 23–29%). The most important machine learning prediction variables regarding maternal smoking were education, ethnic background, marital status and birth weight. We estimated a change from the annual observed smoking prevalence among the women with known smoking status in the range of − 5.5 to 1.1% when combining observed and predicted smoking prevalence. Conclusion The predicted total smoking prevalence was only marginally modified compared to the observed prevalence in the group with known smoking status.
