Coastal restoration evaluated using dominant habitat characteristics and associated fish communities

Comparative diets and prey resource competition between early-juvenile common snook Centropomus undecimalis and non-native pike killifish Belonesox belizanus

Pike killifish Belonesox belizanus is an established non-native fish species in Florida, USA, that was first documented in south Florida in 1957 and then in Tampa Bay tributaries in 1994. Decreases in small-bodied fish abundances have been linked to the introduction of B. belizanus in both of these regions. Increases in the range and abundance of B. belizanus in the Tampa Bay area and overlap in habitat usage have led to concerns about potential competition with, and predation on, early-juvenile common snook Centropomus undecimalis [≤100 mm standard length (SL)]. Stomach contents of B. belizanus (N = 422; 14-127 mm SL) and early-juvenile C. undecimalis (N = 1132; 5-119 mm SL) were collected to examine the dietary overlap of these two species and potential differences in the diet of early-juvenile C. undecimalis from locations with and without B. belizanus co-occurring. Prey resources were collected by seine to assess prey resource limitation and prey selectivity. Stomach content analysis indicated that there was low overlap in the diet of early-juvenile C. undecimalis and B. belizanus (C ≤ 0.40). Early-juvenile C. undecimalis had a wider diet breadth, consuming many organisms that are not consumed by B. belizanus and which make up a large portion of the early-juvenile C. undecimalis diet. Analysis of prey resources indicated that some prey groups may have lower abundances in locations where B. belizanus are present, with some of these differences reflected in the diet of early-juvenile C. undecimalis. Despite these differences, there was minimal difference in the diet overlap of early-juvenile C. undecimalis from locations with and without B. belizanus co-occurring. Currently B. belizanus appear to be competing minimally with early-juvenile C. undecimalis for prey resources, with no substantial impacts being detected.

The Role of Habitat Amount and Vegetation Density for Explaining Loss of Small-Mammal Diversity in a South American Woodland Savanna

The focus of research and conservation in tropical regions is mainly devoted to forest ecosystems, usually neglecting the processes underlying widespread, more open biomes, like savannas. Here we test a wide range of sampled woodland sites across the South American savanna for the direct and indirect effects of habitat loss and vegetation density on the diversity of small-mammal species. We quantify the direction and magnitude of the effects of habitat amount (habitat loss), vegetation density (tree or foliage density), and patch size (species-area effect) on species composition and richness. We also test whether the relative effect sizes of landscape and patch-related metrics predict a persistence gradient from habitat specialist to generalist species across 54 sites. We used structural equation models (SEM) to test our predictions. After 22,032 trap-nights considering all sampled sites and 20 small-mammal species identified, the structural equation model explained 23.5% of the variance in the richness of small-mammal species. Overall, we found that landscape-level metrics were more important in explaining species richness, with a secondary role of patch-level metrics such as vegetation density. The direct effect of local landscape was significant for explaining species richness variation, but a strong positive association between regional and local landscapes was also present. Furthermore, considering the direct and indirect paths, SEM explained 46.2% of the species composition gradient. In contrast to species richness, we recorded that the combined landscape-level and patch-level metrics are crucial to determining small-mammal species composition at savanna patches. The small mammals from the South American woodland savanna exhibit clear ecological gradients on their species composition and richness, driven by habitat specialist (e.g., Thrichomys fosteri, Monodelphis domestica, and Thylamys macrurus) and generalist (e.g., Didelphis albiventris, Rhipidomys macrurus, and Calomys callosus) species’ responses to habitat amount and/or vegetation density, as seen in dense-forest Neotropical biomes.

Salt marsh restoration: an overview of techniques and success indicators

Coastal wetlands including salt marshes are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth. They are known for improving the quality of coastal water and provisioning coastal fisheries. However, this ecosystem is under potential threat due to urban coastal land reclamation, limited sediment supply, increased nutrient/eutrophication, and sea level rise. Therefore, restoration efforts to protect the degraded salt marsh habitat are considerably increasing worldwide. In this paper, we present an overview of salt marsh restoration techniques and success indicators. Published scientific literature in English language was collected by searching the most relevant keywords from popular search engines, namely, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Mendeley to get the information about salt marsh restoration techniques and success indicators. This study comprehensively reviewed data from 78 peer-reviewed papers. Results indicated that much of the salt marsh was restored through assisted abiotic strategies (e.g., recovery of tidal exchange, managed realignment, and sediment level amendment). A total of 214 indicators were found, spanning over six major ecological attributes such as structural diversity, ecosystem functions, physical conditions, species composition, external exchange, and absence of threat. Author keywords analysis revealed several hotspots for recent research (e.g., 16 s rRNA, fungi, microbial communities, carbon accumulation, and blue carbon). This paper proposes a model for restoring degraded salt marsh, as well as tracking their success. The information presented here will assist the marine ecosystem restoration practitioners in getting a comprehensive understanding of salt marsh restoration success evaluation.

Restored Coastal Habitat Can “Reel In” Juvenile Sportfish: Population and Community Responses in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida, USA

Coastal habitats are declining worldwide, which has impacted economically important fisheries, especially in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida. As a result, extensive intertidal oyster reef and living shoreline restoration projects have been implemented. Restoration can also theoretically benefit predator populations, but this relationship is understudied. Here, the impact of habitat restoration on juvenile predatory fish (i.e., sportfish) populations (abundance) and communities (species richness, diversity, and assemblage) was assessed prior to and following oyster reef restoration and living shoreline stabilization for up to three years, and incorporated the influence of 17 environmental predictor variables. Juvenile sportfish abundance and richness (n = 11) were variable over time but collectively higher on restored oyster reefs compared to controls, and similar between control and stabilized shorelines. Sportfish abundance was best described by a combination of biotic features of the site (e.g., reef height and benthic substrate cover), prey abundance, decreasing distance to the nearest ocean inlet and dissolved oxygen. Results suggest future restoration site selection should emphasize adequate dissolved oxygen (~6 mg/L), oyster densities above 50/m2 and reef height above 55 mm, and minimum shoreline vegetation coverage of 50% to support macrofaunal prey and subsequently attract sportfish. These findings can help natural resource managers better use habitat restoration as a tool for enhancing fish populations in the future.

Database of summer fish fauna sampled in river estuaries in the southern part of the Boso Peninsula, Japan

Background

River estuaries provide various ecosystem services, such as nutrient circulation, climate change mitigation, habitats and coastal defence. Information on the various taxonomic groups is collected from large-scale estuaries; however, few studies have focused on river estuaries of small and medium-sized rivers. In particular, information on river estuaries in peninsulas and islands with complex marine environments is lacking.

New information

This paper provides basic information on summer fish fauna in the southern part of the Boso Peninsula, Japan. The Boso Peninsula is located at the northernmost point of where the warm current (Kuroshio) reaches and is considered to have highly endemic fish fauna. In total, 28 families, 51 species and 2,908 individuals were collected from the 27 river estuaries. The data are all accessible from the document "database_fish_estuary_boso (http://ipt.pensoft.net/manage/resource.do?r=database_fish_estuary_boso)". Further, Sicyopterus japonicus and Microphis brachyurus, which appear in estuaries that are influenced by the Kuroshio, were confirmed. However, these species were confirmed in few of the rivers studied, highlighting the importance of habitat conservation.
