Abstract
Co-operation of the endogenous and exogenous defense system maintains redox homeostasis and is essential for health. The endogenous defense system includes enzymatic (e.g. superoxide dismutase, catalase) and non-enzymatic, low molecular-weight scavengers (e.g. glutathione, ascorbic acid). Pathogenesis of many serious diseases (e.g. cancer, ischemic heart disease) includes oxidative stress which can disturb angiogenesis, the process of formation of new blood vessels sprouting from the existing one. Antioxidants, through reduction of oxidative stress and influence on neovascularization, may modulate progress and results of therapy in those diseases where such processes play an important role. Herein the impact of exogenous antioxidants on angiogenesis and factors modulating this process is presented. Most synthetic antioxidants whose activity has been described (namely N-acetylcysteine, pentoxifylline, synthetic analogue of curcumin, synthetic analogue of epigallocatechin-3 gallate [EGCG], tripertenoids) exert an inhibitory effect on neovascularization. A similar effect was also exhibited by several natural origin antioxidants (e.g. resveratrol, EGCG), which suggests that their application in therapy might normalize excessive angiogenesis. Some natural origin antioxidants e.g. purple coneflower and preparations consisting of natural antioxidants such as Padma 28 and Immunal forte increase a too low baseline level of angiogenesis and decreases a too high level. These preparations exert a regulatory effect on and may normalize neovascularization. They can be used in the case of diseases associated with too low or too high angiogenesis.

Abstract
Background In this study, we sought to identify differentially expressed proteins in the serum of patients with sarcoidosis or tuberculosis and to evaluate these proteins as markers for the differential diagnosis of sarcoidosis and sputum-negative tuberculosis. Methods Using protein microarrays, we identified 3 proteins exhibiting differential expression between patients with sarcoidosis and tuberculosis. Elevated expression of these proteins was verified using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and was further confirmed by immunohistochemistry. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, logistic regression analysis, parallel, and serial tests were used to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of the proteins. Results Intercellular Adhesion Molecule 1(ICAM-1) and leptin were screened for differentially expressed proteins relevant to sarcoidosis and tuberculosis. Using ROC curves, we found that ICAM-1 (cutoff value: 57740 pg/mL) had an area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity of 0.718, 62.3%, and 79.5% respectively, while leptin (cutoff value: 1193.186 pg/mL) had an AUC, sensitivity, and specificity of 0.763, 88.3%, and 65.8%, respectively. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the AUC, sensitivity, and specificity of combined leptin and ICAM-1 were 0.787, 89.6%, and 65.8%, respectively, while those of combined leptin, ICAM-1, and body mass index (BMI) were 0.837, 90.9%, and 64.4%, respectively, which had the greatest diagnostic value. Parallel and serial tests indicated that the BMI-leptin parallel with the ICAM-1 serial was the best diagnostic method, achieving a sensitivity and specificity of 86.5% and 73.1%, respectively. Thus, our results identified elevated expression of ICAM-1 and leptin in serum and granulomas of sarcoidosis patients. Conclusions ICAM-1 and leptin were found to be potential markers for the diagnosis of sarcoidosis and differential diagnosis of sarcoidosis and sputum-negative tuberculosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcoidosis is thought to be a T-helper type 1 cytokine-mediated disorder. Sputum induction has been proposed as a useful noninvasive method mainly for the assessment of airway diseases. However, it is unknown whether the balance of T-cytotoxic (Tc1) type 1 and Tc2 cells is altered in sarcoidosis. STUDY OBJECTIVES The primary aim of this study was to characterize the CD8+ T lymphocyte subpopulations in induced sputum from sarcoidosis patients, and to compare these subpopulations to those found in BAL fluid (BALF) from sarcoidosis patients. To further investigate the mechanism of the cytotoxic activity of CD8+ lymphocytes, we measured their perforin expression. Additionally, two adhesion molecules (CD62 and CD71), which are expressed on CD8+ T cells and may serve as novel immunologic markers, were detected. SETTINGS Department of Thoracic Medicine, University of Crete, and Department of Pneumonology, Democritus University of Thrace, Alexandroupolis, Greece. PATIENTS We prospectively studied 22 patients with sarcoidosis (median age, 48 years; age range, 25 to 65 years) and 10 healthy subjects (5 female and 5 male; median age, 39 years; age range, 26 to 60 years). INTERVENTIONS The stimulation of lymphocytes with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate was followed by the use of double immunocytochemical methods to identify CD8+ interferon (IFN)-gamma producing cells (ie, Tc1) and CD8+ interleukin-4 producing cells (ie, Tc2). MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS We found a significant decrease in the prestimulation percentage of IFN-gamma-positive CD8+ T cells in the BALF (p = 0.001) and induced sputum (p = 0.001) of sarcoidosis patients compared to the number in samples from healthy control subjects. However, no significant difference was documented between lymphocyte subsets poststimulation. Decreased levels of perforin expression were found in BALF (p = 0.001) and induced sputum (p < 0.001) of sarcoidosis patients compared to those in control subjects. The adhesion molecules were significantly increased in both the BALF and induced sputum of the sarcoid population compared to those in healthy control subjects. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that inflammation could be effectively and noninvasively determined by using sputum induction in sarcoidosis patients. In addition, we have provided evidence suggesting the possibility that CD8+ lymphocytes might not play a major role in sarcoidosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recent studies have indicated the importance of cell adhesion molecules in the pathogenesis of various inflammatory lung diseases. Our study was designed to determine whether five soluble adhesion molecules including soluble L-, E- and P-selectin (sL-, sE- and sP-selectin), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) in serum reflect the severity of active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), and whether there is a distinct profile of these soluble molecules in this disease. METHODOLOGY Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, we measured the serum levels of these five soluble adhesion molecules in 31 patients with active TB and 11 healthy volunteers. RESULTS Serum levels of sE-selectin, sP-selectin and sICAM-1, but not sL-selectin or sVCAM-1, were significantly higher in patients with active TB than in the control subjects (P < 0.001, each). Significant correlations were detected only between serum levels of sE-selectin and sP-selectin, sE-selectin and sICAM-1, and sP-selectin and sICAM-1. There was a significant correlation between the Gaffky scale result (a scale assessing the number of mycobacteria bacilli present) and all of the above adhesion molecules, except for sL-selectin. Serum levels of sE-selectin, sL-selectin and sICAM-1 also correlated with the CXR radiological score. Higher levels of sL-selectin and sICAM-1 were detected in the serum of patients with radiological cavity formation compared to those without. The ESR, C-reactive protein and circulating neutrophil counts all correlated significantly with sE-selectin, sP-selectin, sICAM-1 and sVCAM-1. CONCLUSION The results suggest that there is a distinct profile of soluble adhesion molecules in active pulmonary TB and that sE-selectin, sP-selectin, and especially sICAM-1 appear to be the most sensitive clinical measures of disease severity.

Abstract
Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is an adhesion molecule that plays a crucial role in cell-cell interactions involved in the recruitment of cells and immune responses. Under some circumstances, ICAM-1 is found as a soluble protein that has the potential to influence the nature of immunoinflammatory responses. By examining cells and fluid from the pleural compartment of patients with cancer, tuberculosis, and congestive heart failure, the cellular source, conformation, control, and biological activity of soluble ICAM-1 (sICAM-1) were investigated. The results suggest that dimeric sICAM-1 was released locally in the pleural compartment of tuberculous and malignant effusions. sICAM-1 was shed from preexpressed surface ICAM-1 rather than produced de novo, and both CD45-positive leukocytes and cytokeratin-positive epithelial and mesothelial cells expressed ICAM-1, suggesting multiple cellular sources for sICAM-1. The expression of sICAM-1 was regulated because pleural macrophages caused release of sICAM-1 via a tumor necrosis factor-alpha-dependent mechanism. The functional significance of sICAM-1 was demonstrated by showing that pleural sICAM-1 interfered with conjugate formation between LAK cells and K562 cells, suggesting that pleural sICAM-1 plays an immunosuppressive role by inhibiting adhesion of cytotoxic lymphocytes and tumor cells. Thus, sICAM-1 is shed from the surface of cells in a regulated manner and has the potential to influence the immune response in the pleural space.

Abstract
Staging of sarcoidosis needs a synthesis of clinical features, histology, radiology, biochemical changes, and immunologic aberrations to distinguish this disease from nonspecific sarcoid-tissue reactions. The main aim of this report is to offer readers an overview on immunologic markers that have been evaluated in the last years with the ultimate goal of relating their determination to the management of the disease. The first part is devoted to immunologic markers that have been proposed to define the activity of the T-cell component of the sarcoid inflammatory process. In the second part of the paper, we will provide a descriptive definition of immunologic markers of activity of sarcoid macrophages relating them to the clinical course of sarcoidosis.

Abstract
The level of serum KL-6 antigen has been reported to be a sensitive indicator of various interstitial pneumonitis, but in patients with hematological malignancies who were accompanied by infective interstitial pneumonitis like Pneumocystis carinii or cytomegalovirus (CMV) pneumonia, it is still unknown whether serum KL-6 level is useful as a good marker for the diagnosis or disease activity. In this study, the serum levels of KL-6 and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (sICAM-1) were evaluated in five patients with malignant lymphoma or adult T-cell leukemia. Serum KL-6 and sICAM-1 levels at the time of diagnosis of P. carinii or CMV pneumonia were 1220+/-323 U/ml (mean+/-SD) and 1246+/-485 ng/ml, respectively. These levels were apparently high, when compared with standard value of serum KL-6 (<520 U/ml) and that of sICAM-1 (115-306 ng/ml). In patients without P. carinii or CMV pneumonia, who had hematological malignancies or AIDS, serum level of KL-6 was not high (299+/-122 U/ml), but sICAM-1 was high (651+/-495 ng/ml) because of the elevation of sICAM-1 in four of five cases. These findings suggest that, in patients with hematological malignancies, serum level of KL-6 antigen rather than sICAM-1 may be useful in the evaluation of CMV or P. carinii pneumonia.

Abstract
Hypocholesterolemia has been observed in several inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, myeloproliferative disorders, systemic lupus erythematosus and sarcoidosis. Serum amyloid A is an acute-phase reactant that is related to the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. This review discusses the relationship between the activation of the cells of the monocyte-macrophage system, determined by the serum amyloid A levels, and the lipid metabolism, measured as alterations in plasma lipoprotein concentrations. The mechanisms of this association during acute inflammation are also discussed in this review.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Few genetic markers for the prognosis of sarcoidosis have been found. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha has been implicated in the pathogenesis of sarcoidosis. Induced TNF-alpha or TNF-beta levels have been shown to be associated with the polymorphisms of the TNF genes. We investigated the roles of such polymorphisms in the development and prolongation of sarcoidosis. SUBJECTS AND MEASUREMENTS One hundred ten Japanese patients with sarcoidosis and 161 control subjects were genotyped for three biallelic polymorphisms in the promoter region of TNF-alpha gene by direct sequencing of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products. A polymorphism of the TNF-beta gene (TNFB*1/TNFB*2) was detected by NCO: I restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of PCR products spanning intron 1 and exon 2 of the TNF-beta gene. RESULTS None of the polymorphisms conferred susceptibility to sarcoidosis. However, our study identified the allele TNFB*1, detected by the presence of a NCO: I restriction site, as a marker of prolonged clinical course, with the resolution of sarcoidosis being defined as the disappearance of all clinical symptoms, physical signs of active lesions, abnormal chest radiograph findings, and abnormal results of pulmonary function and biochemical tests. When the probability of remission in patients homozygous for TNFB*2 was defined as 1.00, it was 0.48 (95% confidence interval, 0.26 to 0.88; p < 0.05) in patients with TNFB*1 (genotypes TNFB*1/1 and TNFB*1/2). CONCLUSIONS The TNFB*1 allele is a marker for prolonged clinical course in patients with sarcoidosis. Our study is the first to link a cytokine gene polymorphism to the prognosis of sarcoidosis.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE T-lymphocytic alveolitis and increased levels of interleukin-2 receptor-alpha (CD25)-bearing T cells in the BAL fluid (BALF) of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) carriers have been reported. Several chemokines and adhesion molecules may contribute to the accumulation of T lymphocytes in the lungs of HTLV-1 carriers. To clarify the correlation between adhesion molecules and HTLV-1-associated pulmonary disorders, we compared the distribution of T-lymphocyte subsets and soluble adhesion molecules, including soluble intercellular adhesion molecule (sICAM)-1, soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), soluble L-selectin (sL-selectin), soluble E-selectin (sE-selectin), and soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin), in BALF and peripheral blood, between HTLV-1 carriers and noninfected healthy subjects. DESIGN Flow cytometric analysis with monoclonal antibodies to cell-surface antigens was used to identify T-lymphocyte subsets in BALF samples from HTLV-1 carriers (n = 13) and noninfected healthy control subjects (n = 10). The levels of various soluble adhesion molecules in serum and in BALF were estimated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Higher percentages of CD3+ cells, CD3-expressing human leukocyte antigen-DR antigen, and CD3+CD25+ cells were detected in the BALF of HTLV-1 carriers than in that of noninfected control subjects. The concentrations of sICAM-1, sVCAM-1, sL-selectin, SE- selectin, and sP-selectin in the sera of patients were significantly higher than those in noninfected healthy control subjects. The concentration of sICAM-1 in the BALF of patients was significantly higher than that in noninfected healthy control subjects, and the concentration of sICAM-1 correlated well with the percentage of CD3+CD25+ cells. CONCLUSION The concentrations of adhesion molecules in the sera of and sICAM-1 in the BALF of HTLV-1 carriers were significantly higher than those in noninfected individuals, and the concentration of sICAM-1 correlated well with the percentage of CD3+CD25+ cells in BALF. Our results suggest a possible interaction between activated T cells bearing CD25 and soluble adhesion molecules, especially sICAM-1, which may contribute to the pulmonary involvement in HTLV-1 carriers.

Abstract
A number of adhesion molecules participate in the recruitment of inflammatory cells to the site of inflammation, and selectins together with their ligands are important in the early transient adhesion phase. In this study, we evaluated the role of L-selectin in T lymphocyte alveolitis in patients with active pulmonary sarcoidosis. We measured serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) concentrations of soluble (s)L-selectin using an ELISA. Serum and BALF concentrations of sL-selectin were significantly elevated in patients with sarcoidosis compared with control healthy subjects and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients (P < 0.05 and P < 0. 01, respectively). The lymphocyte surface marker was also examined in peripheral blood and BALF by flow cytometric analysis. The percentage of CD3+CD62L+ cells (L-selectin-bearing T lymphocytes) was significantly lower in peripheral blood of sarcoidosis than in that of healthy subjects (P < 0.01). In contrast, the percentage of CD3+CD62L- cells (L-selectin-negative T lymphocytes) in BALF of patients with sarcoidosis was significantly higher than in healthy subjects (P < 0.05) and IPF patients (P < 0.01). Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between serum concentrations of sL-selectin and the number of L-selectin-negative T lymphocytes in BALF (r = 0.535, P < 0.01). Our results suggest that L-selectin may be involved in T lymphocyte alveolitis in patients with active pulmonary sarcoidosis.

Abstract
The inflammation markers alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT), Clara cell protein (CC-16), soluble interleukin-2-receptor (IL-R) and the soluble adhesion molecule E-selectin, the intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM-1) and the vascular adhesion molecule (VCAM-1) were determined in the serum of 195 salt-exposed miners to analyse dose-response relationships between markers and potash dust. Alpha-1-antitrypsin, Clara-cell protein, IL2-R, E-selectin and VCAM-1 were not changed by salt exposure, however the ICAM-1 level in the serum fell slightly as the salt exposure increased. This effect was strongest in the group of smokers, still visible in the group of ex-smokers, no effect was seen in non-smokers. Markers, with the exception of VCAM-1, were influenced by tobacco exposure. Since markers were not elevated in relation to salt dust exposure, the results do not support an inflammatory effect of potash dust on the respiratory system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The natural course of sarcoidosis is variable, but no single parameter has been generally accepted as a good marker for disease activity. Adhesion molecules are required for the migration of inflammatory cells; thus, they may be markers of activity in sarcoidosis. METHODS In 16 patients with active sarcoidosis and 11 with inactive disease (10 were male, 17 were female; mean age [-/+ SD], 39.6+/-11.0 years; mean follow-up, 21+/-16 months), the expression of adhesion molecules on cells obtained with BAL (measured by flow cytometry) and the level of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (sICAM-1) in the serum and BAL fluid (BALF) were measured at the time of diagnosis and during the follow-up. The changes in serum sICAM-1 level and ICAM-1 expression on cells obtained with BAL were compared with the clinical course of the disease. RESULTS In patients with active disease, the ICAM-1 on alveolar macrophage (AM) (relative linear median fluorescence intensity [RMFI], 3.21+/-1.55) and sICAM-1 levels in serum (575+/-221 ng/mL) and BALF (47.3+/-19.3 ng/mL) were higher than those for patients with inactive disease (RMFI, 1.67+/-0.66; p = 0.0034; serum, 263+/-98.5 ng/mL; p = 0.0001; BALF, 27.5+/-19.0 ng/mL; p = 0.0209). In the patients with active disease, ICAMN-1 on AM and serum sICAM-1 decreased (RMFI, 1.51+/-0.84; 284+/-118 ng/mL, respectively) after steroid therapy, but no significant change was noted in patients with inactive disease. We also found that the initial ICAM-1 on AM and serum sICAM-1 had a significant correlation with the degree of improvement in pulmonary function tests after the therapy. The disease relapsed in four patients after the discontinuation of steroids, and the serum sICAM-1 level was elevated again at the time of relapse. CONCLUSION Our data suggest that the serum sICAM-1 level and the ICAM-1 expression on AM may be good markers of disease activity and also a predictor of outcome in sarcoidosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Pulmonary sarcoidosis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown aetiology accompanied by a lymphocytic alveolitis. It is likely that a selective and temporal expression of adhesion molecules plays a crucial role in the recruitment of cells to the inflammatory site. We investigated the expression of adhesion molecules on alveolar T-lymphocytes and in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid and serum to elucidate mechanisms behind the accumulation of cells in the lung in sarcoidosis. DESIGN In a cross-sectional study in patients with active and inactive sarcoidosis and in healthy volunteers, we examined, in serum and in BAL fluid, the soluble adhesion molecules, VCAM-1, ICAM-1, and P-, E- and L-selectin. In addition, the expressions of alpha4-beta1 (VLA-4) and alpha5-beta1 (VLA-5) integrins on alveolar T-lymphocytes were analysed. SETTING The subjects attended the outpatient clinic at the Division of Respiratory Medicine, Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. SUBJECTS Nineteen sarcoidosis patients, nine with clinically active disease, and 13 healthy volunteers were included in the study. The sarcoidosis diagnosis was based on a typical histological and/or clinical (symptoms, radiograph, lung function) picture. RESULTS In sarcoidosis patients, particularly in those with active disease, an increase of the expressions of beta1-integrins was accompanied by elevated concentrations in BAL fluid of soluble VCAM-1. In serum, the levels of E-selectin and ICAM-1 were significantly higher in patients with active disease than in those with inactive disease and controls. CONCLUSIONS The findings offer some mechanistic explanations as to how the cell-rich alveolitis in sarcoidosis occurs, and furthermore suggest additional markers, such as s-ICAM-1, for assessment of disease activity.

Abstract
An inflammatory response has been observed in lung cancer both locally and systemically. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the alveolar compartment was involved in the inflammatory response in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). Both inflammatory mediators in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and cytokines produced by alveolar macrophages (AM) were investigated. Twenty patients with newly detected NSCLC and nine control subjects were studied. The patients had not been treated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or with systemic or inhaled corticosteroids. All patients and control subjects were current smokers or stopped smoking recently. BAL was performed in the affected lung as well as in the contralateral lung of NSCLC patients, and only unilaterally in control subjects. Comparable results were demonstrated for the levels of the of the inflammatory mediators TNF-a, Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, both soluble TNF receptors and the soluble adhesion molecules E-selectin and intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 between the affected lung and the contralateral lung in the NSCLC population as well as between the NSCLC population and the control subjects. Moreover, no significant differences in cytokine profiles of AM were found between AM obtained from the affected lung and from the contralateral lung. Although BAL is a useful tool in the diagnostic procedure for NSCLC, the present findings suggest that BAL does not reflect the enhanced inflammatory state, as reported in plasma and in the interstitial compartment around the tumour cells in NSCLC.

Abstract
Recombinant Der f 2 (rDer f 2) is a promising new allergen expected to improve the diagnosis and immunotherapy of house dust mite allergy and to further immunological studies. To evaluate the hyposensitizing activity of rDer f 2 to mite allergy, we examined the effect of its oral administration on allergic inflammation in A/J mice immunized with mite allergens. A/J mice immunized with rDer f 2 alone or rDer f 2 + crude mite extract were orally given 0 (control), 0.01, 0.1, or 1 mg/day of rDer f 2 for 4 weeks, followed by an antigen inhalation challenge. Twenty-four hours after rDer f 2 inhalation, control animals experienced severe leukocyte influx into the airway. The infiltrating cells were mainly neutrophils, with some eosinophils and lymphocytes. The concentrations of IL4, IFNgamma, and soluble ICAM-1 in the bronchial alveolar lavage fluid increased twofold compared with values before rDer f 2 inhalation. In contrast, inflammation was significantly suppressed in mice given 1 mg/day of rDer f 2 orally for 4 weeks and partially suppressed in those fed 0.1 mg/day of the antigen. Plasma anti-rDer f 2 antibody levels were unchanged by oral rDer f 2 treatment. Mite extract inhalation challenge provoked neutophilia in rDer f 2 + mite-sensitized control mice, and this allergic reaction tended to decrease in sensitized mice fed 1 mg/day of rDer f 2 orally for 4 weeks. We conclude that rDer f 2 has hyposensitizing activities and may be useful in immunotherapy for house dust mite allergy.

Abstract
The soluble form of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) might be a serum parameter of inflammatory activity gauging cellular interactions with possible relevance in sarcoidosis. To address this question we measured sICAM-1 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in serum and shedding of this molecule by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cells in sarcoidosis patients (44 and 40, respectively) and in controls (10 and 19, respectively). Serum concentrations of sICAM-1 (588.3 +/- 72.2 ng/ml) and its spontaneous release by BAL cells (9.9 +/- 1.5 ng/ml) in patients with active sarcoidosis were significantly higher than in those with inactive disease or controls, although no correlation was observed. Significant correlations of sICAM-1 shedding by nonstimulated BAL cells with the serum level of neopterin and of shedding by lipopolysaccharide-stimulated BAL cells with percentage of alveolar macrophages were observed in active sarcoidosis. Kinetic cell culture experiments with peripheral blood mononuclears disclosed a rapid up-regulation of sICAM-1 shedding and tumor necrosis factor-alpha release; however, at 5 h after stimulation a dissociation of their releases was observed. sICAM-1 release was maintained over 2 days, whereas tumor necrosis factor-alpha release peaked at 5 and ceased after 43 h. These results provide evidence that circulating and BAL cell culture-derived sICAM-1 reflect the stage of sarcoid inflammation. Although sICAM-1 in BAL cell supernatants originates from alveolar macrophages; the absence of a correlation with serum sICAM-1 concentration indicates that other cells are additional sources of the circulating pool of this molecule.
