Factors influencing intention to plagiarize among nursing students in the Philippines

Background

Plagiarism is an ethical concern among students but is insufficiently discussed and acknowledged in some educational institutions. Determining what factors influence plagiarism can help the academic community manage its incidence.

Objective

This study determined the factors affecting the intention to plagiarize among Filipino nursing students.

Methods

Utilizing a cross-sectional research design, data were gathered from 304 nursing students last June 2021 using valid instruments administered online. Regression analysis identified influencing factors of intention to plagiarize.

Results

Findings indicated a generally low intention (M = 1.47, SD = 0.74) to plagiarize among nursing students. Internet literacy (B = -0.314, p <0.001), attitude (B = 0.257, p <0.001), moral obligation (B = -0.236, p <0.001), past behavior (B = 0.139, p <0.001), and subjective norm (B = -0.095, p = -0.001) influenced nursing students' plagiarism intention.

Conclusion

Several interrelated factors play major roles in nursing students' tendency to plagiarize. Creating an educational environment that does not favor the unethical practice of plagiarism is recommended for nursing schools.

Prevalence of needle-stick injury among nursing students: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Introduction

Needle-stick injuries (NSI) are a serious threat to the health of healthcare workers, nurses, and nursing students, as they can expose them to infectious diseases. Different prevalence rates have been reported for this type of injury in different studies worldwide. Therefore, this study aimedto estimate the pooled prevalence of NSI among nursing students.

Methods

This study was conducted by searching for articles in Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar without time limitation using the following keywords: needle-stick, needle stick, sharp injury, and nursing student. The data were analyzed using the meta-analysis method and random-effects model. The quality of the articles was evaluated with Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOS). The heterogeneity of the studies was examined using the I 2 index, and the collected data were analyzed using the STATA Software Version 16.

Results

Initially, 1,134 articles were retrieved, of which 32 qualified articles were included in the analysis. Nursing students reported 35% of NSI (95% CI: 28-43%) and 63% (95% CI: 51-74%) did not report their needle-stick injuries. The highest prevalence was related to studies conducted in Asia (39.7%; 95% CI: 31.7-47.7%). There was no significant correlation among NSI prevalence and age of samples, and article year of publication.

Conclusion

A third of nursing students reported experiencing NSI. Consequently, occupational hazard prevention training and student support measures need to be considered.

Predicting nursing students' intention to attend face-to-face classes on school reopening: A theory of planned behavior application

BACKGROUND

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in school closures and the reopening of schools is considered to be a possible approach to start reversing learning deficits. However, the literature is scarce on the determinants of intention to attend face-to-face classes among nursing students.

METHOD

This cross-sectional study examined students' intention to attend limited face-to-face classes on school reopening, and its association among the core constructs of the Theory of Planned Behavior. Undergraduate nursing students of one university in the Philippines (n = 322) answered an online questionnaire. Predictor variables were determined by multiple linear regression analysis.

RESULTS

Results demonstrated that nursing students had a high intention (4.47 of 5) to attend limited face-to-face classes. First- and second-year students had significantly higher intention to attend limited face-to-face classes than third- and fourth-year nursing students. Multiple regression analysis suggested that attitude (β = .127, p = .001), subjective norm (β = .400, p = .000), and perceived behavioral control (β = .326, p = .000) positively predicted students' intention to attend face-to-face classes.

CONCLUSION

As many schools prepare for the gradual reopening of campuses, the different beliefs of students may be considered by nursing schools to better understand students' intention for face-to-face instruction.

Revisiting Job Satisfaction and Intention to Stay: A Cross-sectional Study among Hospital Nurses in the Philippines

Background: The global shortage of nurses and the rapid turnover of nurses remain crucial issues and areas of concern that call for immediate attention. Job satisfaction is a recognized determinant of nurses’ decision to stay in their current workplace. However, while nurses’ job satisfaction has received considerable attention among scholars, the results of studies are still mixed.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to revisit and assess the job satisfaction and intention to stay of nurses in two selected hospitals in the Philippines.Methods: A cross-sectional research design was used in this study. A sample of 120 nurses in a public and private hospital in the Philippines responded to the Job Satisfaction Survey and Intent to Stay Scale questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson’s r were employed for data analysis.Results: Results show that the majority (58.3%) of the nurses were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with their job. Also, nurses intended to neither stay nor quit in their current workplace with only a few (9.2%) had high intention to stay. Nurses were most satisfied in terms of the nature of their job (18.95+2.50) but were dissatisfied with the fringe benefits (12.69+4.11) and operating conditions (12.18+2.58) at work. Nurses in the public hospital (p=0.040) and those with higher salaries (p=0.015) had significantly higher intentions to stay. Job satisfaction and intention to stay were significantly related (p=0.002).Conclusion: Nurses’ job satisfaction is positively linked with their intention to stay in their current workplace. This study highlights that efforts should be made to improve nurses’ job satisfaction to encourage nurses to remain in their current workplace. Also, increasing nurses’ salary particularly those nurses in the private sector is a focal point of consideration to ensure that there is enough supply of nurses in the country.
