Abstract
Polyphenolic compounds constitute a diverse group of natural components commonly occurring in various plant species, known for their potential to exert both beneficial and detrimental effects. Additionally, these polyphenols have also been implicated as endocrine-disrupting (ED) chemicals, raising concerns about their widespread use in the cosmetics industry. In this comprehensive review, we focus on the body of literature pertaining to the estrogenic properties of ED chemicals, with a particular emphasis on the interaction of isoflavones with estrogen receptors. Within this review, we aim to elucidate the multifaceted roles and effects of polyphenols on the skin, exploring their potential benefits as well as their capacity to act as ED agents. By delving into this intricate subject matter, we intend to provoke thoughtful consideration, effectively opening a Pandora's box of questions for the reader to ponder. Ultimately, we invite the reader to contemplate whether polyphenols should be regarded as friends or foes in the realm of skincare and endocrine disruption.

Abstract
Polyphenols are an important component of plant-derived food with a wide spectrum of beneficial effects on human health. For many years, they have aroused great interest, especially due to their antioxidant properties, which are used in the prevention and treatment of many diseases. Unfortunately, as with any chemical substance, depending on the conditions, dose, and interactions with the environment, it is possible for polyphenols to also exert harmful effects. This review presents a comprehensive current state of the knowledge on the negative impact of polyphenols on human health, describing the possible side effects of polyphenol intake, especially in the form of supplements. The review begins with a brief overview of the physiological role of polyphenols and their potential use in disease prevention, followed by the harmful effects of polyphenols which are exerted in particular situations. The individual chapters discuss the consequences of polyphenols’ ability to block iron uptake, which in some subpopulations can be harmful, as well as the possible inhibition of digestive enzymes, inhibition of intestinal microbiota, interactions of polyphenolic compounds with drugs, and impact on hormonal balance. Finally, the prooxidative activity of polyphenols as well as their mutagenic, carcinogenic, and genotoxic effects are presented. According to the authors, there is a need to raise public awareness about the possible side effects of polyphenols supplementation, especially in the case of vulnerable subpopulations.

Abstract
The effects of exercise on nutrient digestion and absorption in the intestinal tract are not well understood. A few studies have reported that exercise training increases the expression of molecules involved in carbohydrate digestion and absorption. Exercise was also shown to increase the blood concentration of glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2), which regulates carbohydrate digestion and absorption in the small intestine. Therefore, we investigated the effects of exercise on the expression of molecules involved in intestinal digestion and absorption, including GLP-2. Six-week-old male mice were divided into a sedentary (SED) and low-intensity exercise (LEx) group. LEx mice were required to run on a treadmill (12.5 m/min, 1 h), whereas SED mice rested. All mice were euthanized 1 h after exercise or rest, and plasma, jejunum, ileum, and colon samples were collected, followed by analysis via IHC, EIA, and immunoblotting. The levels of plasma GLP-2 and the jejunum expression of the GLP-2 receptor, sucrase-isomaltase (SI), and glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2) were higher in LEx mice. Thus, we showed that acute low-intensity exercise affects the expression of molecules involved in intestinal carbohydrate digestion and absorption via GLP-2. Our results suggest that exercise might be beneficial for small intestine function in individuals with intestinal frailty.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to observe changes in iron metabolism of rats due to high-intensity exercise during reduced food intake. METHODS Thirty-six, 4-wk-old male Wistar rats were divided into six groups after being acclimated to running: rested control, intense exercise, 80% feeding and rested, 80% feeding and intense exercise, 70% feeding diet and rested, and 70% feeding and intense exercise groups. Only three intense exercise groups underwent acute running sessions for 30 min (30 m/min) once a day for 7 d. RESULTS Rats did not develop anemia with exercise and food intake restriction. Serum iron levels, transferrin saturation, hepcidin-25, and hepatic iron levels in the exercise groups were lower than those in the respective resting groups. However, these values in the 70% diet groups were slightly higher than those in the 80% diet groups. Serum erythropoietin levels decreased as food intake decreased, but the serum erythropoietin level in the 70% feeding and intense exercise group was similar to that in the rested control group. Serum interleukin-6 levels were significantly lower in the groups with restricted food intake than in the free-fed group, and exercise had no effect. CONCLUSIONS High-intensity exercise under restricted food intake may significantly alter the iron metabolism to maintain blood cell levels due to the strong promotion of metabolic iron utilization in response to dietary iron depletion, increased iron demand, and excretion.

Abstract
Long‐term endurance training for a relatively short duration (~1 h) is reported to increase pancreatic amylase activity in rats, suggesting that chronic exercise training enhances carbohydrate digestive capacity. However, it remains unknown whether longer exercise training duration results in greater adaptation in the pancreas and small intestine. Thus, this study aimed to examine the effects of long‐term endurance training for a longer duration on pancreatic amylase activity and intestinal glucose transporter content in rats. Male Sprague–Dawley rats were subjected to swimming exercise training for 1 h (Ex‐1h group) or 6 h (Ex‐6h group, two 3‐h sessions separated by 1 h of rest) each day, 5 days a week, for 6 weeks. Sedentary rats were used as a control (Con group). Total pancreatic amylase activity in the Ex‐6h group was significantly lower than that in the Con and Ex‐1h groups immediately after the last training session. After 24 h of recovery, total pancreatic amylase activity was significantly higher in the Ex‐1h group (~46%) than in the Con group, and a further increase was observed in the Ex‐6h group (~98%). In addition, the Ex‐6h group, but not the Ex‐1h group, showed significantly greater intestinal sodium‐dependent glucose transporter 1 (SGLT1) content compared with the Con group after 24 h of recovery. However, no significant difference was observed in glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2) content among the three groups. In conclusion, chronic endurance exercise training for a longer duration results in larger increases in pancreatic amylase activity and intestinal SGLT1 content in rats.
