Investigation of Doehlert matrix conception in novel intrinsically conducting polymers based on selenium nanoparticles for wastewater treatment: Synthesis, characterization, kinetic and chemometric study

The synthesis of robust intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) based on nanoparticles is becoming increasingly attractive to the research community due to the unique properties of these nanocomposites. Indeed, as organic semiconductors, ICPs combine both polymer and metal properties in a single structure. This study presents an innovative approach in which the Doehlert Matrix (DM) is applied to a novel ICP nanocomposite based on polyaniline (Pani) coupled with selenium (Se) loaded mesoporous titania (TiO2) for wastewater treatment by photocatalysis. It includes both the elaboration routes of ICP nanocomposites, characterization of materials by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), RAMAN spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) as a representative of dye pollutant. In addition, the photocatalytic process has been optimized by a novel DM conception. The effect of the pH of the solution, the catalyst dosage and the initial pollutant concentration was investigated. The optimum conditions were found to be: initial MB concentration of 15 mg/L, the catalyst dosage of 69 mg and pH of 9.6 with an operating time of 75 min, with a coefficient of determination R2 equal to 0.9985. The removal efficiency of BM was close to 97 %. The study shows that the new ICP nanocomposites improve the photocatalytic efficiency compared to pure titania and/or pure Pani. In addition, as the ternary Pani-Se-TiO2 nanocomposite could be obtained from a low-cost synthesis, it is a very promising material for use in wastewater treatment.

Sensitive detection of dextromethorphan hydrobromide based on portable Raman spectrometer and CuO@AgNPs nano composite SERS substrate

A highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy approach was established for the detection of dextromethorphan hydrobromide (DXM) utilizing nano CuO modified silver nanoparticles (CuO@AgNPs) as substrate. Ultraviolet visible spectra (UV-vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterized the synthesized CuO@AgNPs. UV-vis and fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) were adopted to investigate the interaction between DXM and CuO@AgNPs. The optimal experimental conditions (the dosages of CuO@AgNPs and NaCl as well as mixing time) were explored. The enhancement factor (EF) was 1.71 × 106. The linear relationship between SERS intensity and the concentration of DXM in the range of 67 - 1000 nmol L-1 was obtained as ISERS = 25.81 c + 40398.77, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 2.12 nmol L-1 (S/N = 3). The interference of K+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Ca2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, glucose, HSA, L-tryptophan, soluble starch and ibuprofen were investigated. The method was successfully applied to test DXM in serum samples. The recovery was 99.06% - 101.51% with the relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.74% - 3.87%.

Electrospun silk nanofiber loaded with Ag-doped TiO2 with high-reactive facet as multifunctional air filter

Particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are air pollution that can cause high risk to public health. To protect individuals from air pollution exposure, fibrous filters have been widely employed. In this work, we develop silk nanofibers, which are loaded with Ag-doped TiO2 nanoparticles with exposed (001) (assigned as Ag-TiO2-silk), via electrospinning method and utilized them as multifunctional air filters that can efficiently reduce PM2.5, organic pollutants and microbials. The results showed that Ag-TiO2-silk with a loading of 1 wt% (1%Ag-TiO2-silk) exhibited the best performance among various different Ag-doped samples, as it performed the best as an air filter, which had the highest PM2.5 removal efficiency of 99.04 ± 1.70% with low pressure drop of 34.3 Pa, and also exhibited the highest photodegradation efficiency of formaldehyde. In addition, the Ag-TiO2-silk demonstrated antibacterial activity. These properties make silk composite nanofibers attractive for multifunctional and environmentally-friendly air filter application.

A sensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy detection for gentamicin and tobramycin using γ-Al2O3-modified silver nanoparticles coated with bovine serum albumin as substrate

Two aminoglycoside antibiotics (AGs), gentamicin (GEN) and tobramycin (TOB), have good antibacterial activity against most pseudomonas aeruginosa and staphylococcus. The molecular structure of these drugs lack chromogenic groups, which brings challenges to their detection. In this project, the detecting methods for GEN and TOB utilizing surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) based on γ-Al₂O₃-modified silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) coated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) were established. The enhancement factors (EFs) of GEN and TOB were 2.44 × 10⁵ and 2.67 × 10⁶, respectively. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and spectrophotometric techniques were used to characterize the substrate and the combination of the substance with drugs. The pH, the addition amounts for the substrate and coagulant, as well as the mixing time were optimized. On the basis of single factor experiments, a more scientific response surface model was established. The concentrations of GEN and TOB showed good linear relationships with their Raman signals in the ranges of 6.67 × 10^-8 - 2.00 × 10^-6 and 6.67 × 10^-9 - 3.00 × 10^-7 mol L^-1 respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) were 11.88 and 1.26 nmol L^-1 for GEN and TOB, respectively. The methods were used successfully for the samples determination of the two AGs in commercial drugs and meat products.

Novel cubical Ag(NP) decorated titanium dioxide supported bentonite thin film in the efficient removal of bisphenol A using visible light

The persistent endocrine-disrupting chemical bisphenol A is posing serious health concerns; hence, it is known to be an emerging and potential water contaminant. The present investigation aims to synthesize novel cubical Ag(NP) decorated titanium dioxide-supported bentonite (Ag/TiO₂@Clay) nanocomposite using a novel synthetic process. The nanocomposite materials were characterized by several analytical methods viz., transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Further, the photocatalytic removal of bisphenol A was conducted utilizing the thin film catalyst under the LED (light emitting diode; visible light) and UV-A (ultra violet-A) light sources. The parametric studies solution pH (6.0-12.0), pollutant concentrations (1.0-20.0 mg/L), and the interaction of several scavengers and co-existing ions are studied extensively to demonstrate the insights of the removal mechanism. The mineralization of bisphenol A and repeated use of the thin film catalyst showed the potential usage of photocatalysts in the devised large-scale operations. Similarly, the natural matrix treatment was performed to evaluate the suitability of the process for real implications.

Rapid determination of isepamicin by using SERS based on BSA-protected AgNPs modified by α-Fe2O3

A surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method for the determination of isepamicin (ISE) using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) protected by bovine serum albumin (BSA) and modified by α-Fe₂O₃ as an efficient substrate was established. The synthesized substrate was characterized and verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The conditions affecting the Raman signal of ISE were optimized by single factor and response surface experiments. Under optimized conditions, a standard curve I_SERS = 43.08c + 63598.69 (c: nmol/L) with a linear relationship (r = 0.9976) was established between the SERS intensity and ISE concentration in the range of 20.00 - 2000.00 nmol/L. The limit of detection (LOD) for ISE was 16.58 nmol/L (S/N = 3). The recovery of ISE in the samples was 96.29 % - 104.12 %, with relative standard deviation (RSD) was 1.53 % - 3.43 % (n = 5). The SERS method was reliable and satisfactory for the quantitative analysis of ISE at low concentration.

Nanosized Hexagonal Boron Nitride and Polyethylene Glycol-Filled Leathers for Applications Demanding High Thermal Insulation and Impact Resistance

Leather is a niche material used for upholsteries, gloves, and garments due to its high durability, flexibility, and softness properties. The inclusion of nanoparticles in the leather matrix provides multifunctionality for high-performance applications. Herein, we synthesized hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoparticles via a single-step hydrothermal synthesis and treated the leather after dispersing in polyethylene glycol (PEG) to yield h-BN/PEG-treated leathers. Atomic force microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis ascertained the particle size of 30-50 nm for as-synthesized h-BN nanoparticles. h-BN nanoparticles along with PEG were successfully incorporated into the leather matrix, and this was confirmed by surface and morphological studies using field emission scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. Leathers treated with h-BN/PEG were studied for insulation against heat and cold, and the results displayed improved thermal insulation properties compared to the control leathers. The dynamic mechanical analysis of control and treated leathers demonstrated higher storage modulus, loss modulus, and tan δ values for h-BN/PEG-treated leathers, signifying an increased energy absorption and dissipation potential, which was further ascertained by the low-velocity drop-weight impact resistance test. Thus, the results of this study open up new prospects for h-BN/PEG-treated leathers in strategic applications demanding high thermal insulation and impact resistance properties.

Leather for flexible multifunctional bio-based materials: a review

Nowadays, diverse leather usage conditions and increasing demands from consumers challenge the leather industry. Traditional leather manufacturing is facing long-term challenges, including low-value threshold, confined application fields, and environmental issues. Leather inherits all the biomimetic properties of natural skin such as flexibility, sanitation, cold resistance, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and other cross-domain functions, achieving unremitting attention in multi-functional bio-based materials. Series of researches have been devoted to creating and developing leather-based flexible multi-functional bio-materials, including antibacterial leather, conductive leather, flame-retardant leather, self-cleaning leather, aromatic leather, and electromagnetic shielding leather. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the commonly used leather-based functional materials. Furthermore, the possible challenges for the development of functional leathers are proposed, and expected development directions of leather-based functional materials are discussed. This review may promote and inspire the emerging preparation and applications of leather for flexible functional bio-based materials.

An eco-friendly facile approach for imparting multifunctional protection properties to cellulose/wool blends

A green facile nano-finishing route was developed to impart high antibacterial efficacy, UV-protection, self-cleaning and anti-wrinkle functions to cotton/wool and viscose/wool blends using TiO2, and/or Ag-NPs, as active ingredients, along with citric acid and/or succinic acid/ SHP as ester-crosslinking/fixing systems. The data so obtained demonstrated that outstanding durable functional properties can be achieved using the following formulation: TiO2/Ag-NPs (20 g/L each), citric acid/SHP (50 g/L/30 g/L) and the pad- dry microwave fixation at 1300 W for 5 min. SEM and EDX analysis for selected samples as well mode of interactions among the nominated finishing ingredients and the treated substrates were also investigated.

Simultaneous Sonochemical Coloration and Antibacterial Functionalization of Leather with Selenium Nanoparticles (SeNPs)

The development of antibacterial coatings for footwear components is of great interest both from an industry and consumer point of view. In this work, the leather material was developed taking advantage of the intrinsic antibacterial activity and coloring ability of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs). The SeNPs were synthesized and implemented into the leather surface by using ultrasonic techniques to obtain simultaneous coloring and functionalization. The formation of SeNPs in the solutions was evaluated using UV/Vis spectroscopy and the morphology of the NPs was determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The treated leather material (leather/SeNPs) was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The effects of SeNPs on the coloration and antibacterial properties of the leather material were evaluated. The results revealed that the NPs were mostly spherical in shape, regularly distributed, and closely anchored to the leather surface. The particle size distribution of SeNPs at concentrations of 25 mM and 50 mM was in the range of 36–77 nm and 41–149 nm, respectively. It was observed that leather/SeNPs exhibited a higher depth of shade compared to untreated ones, as well as excellent fastness properties. The results showed that leather/SeNPs can significantly enhance the antibacterial activity against model of bacteria, including Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli). Moreover, the resulting leather exhibited low cytotoxicity against HFB4 cell lines. This achievement should be quite appealing to the footwear industry as a way to prevent the spread of bacterial infection promoted by humidity, poor breathability and temperature which promote the expansion of the microflora of the skin.

Multifunctional Leather Surface Design by Using Carbon Nanotube-Based Composites

This paper deals with original research in smart leather surface design for the development of multifunctional properties by using multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-based nanocomposites. The conductive properties were demonstrated for both sheepskin and bovine leather surfaces for 0.5% MWCNTs in finishing nanocompositions with prospects for new material design intended for flexible electronics or multifunctional leathers. The photocatalytic properties of bovine leather surface treated with 0.5% MWCNTs were shown against an olive oil stain after visible light exposure and were attributed to reactive oxygen species generation and supported by contact angle measurements in dynamic conditions. The volatile organic compounds' decomposition and antibacterial tests confirmed the self-cleaning experimental conclusions. Ultraviolet protection factor had excellent values for leather surfaces treated with multi-walled carbon nanotube and the fastness resistance tests showed improved performance compared to control samples. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy analysis confirmed the influence of different leather surfaces on MWCNT dispersion with an effect on nanoparticle reactivity and efficiency in self-cleaning properties. Multifunctional leather surfaces were designed and demonstrated through MWCNT-based nanocomposite use under conventional finishing conditions.

Interactive Effects of Biosynthesized Nanocomposites and Their Antimicrobial and Cytotoxic Potentials

The present study investigated the biosynthesis of silver (AgNPs), zinc oxide (ZnONPs) and titanium dioxide (TiO2NPs) nanoparticles using Aspergillusoryzae, Aspergillusterreus and Fusariumoxysporum. Nanocomposites (NCs) were successfully synthesized by mixing nanoparticles using a Sonic Vibra-Cell VC/VCX processor. A number of analytical techniques were used to characterize the synthesized biological metal nanoparticles. Several experiments tested biologically synthesized metal nanoparticles and nanocomposites against two types of human pathogenic bacteria, including Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Pseudomonasaeruginosa. Additionally, the antitumor activity in HCT-116 cells (colonic carcinoma) was also evaluated. Significant antimicrobial effects of various synthesized forms of nanoparticles and nanocomposites against E. coli and P. aeruginosa bacteria were detected. Various synthesized biogenic forms of nanoparticles and nanocomposite (9.0 to 29 mm in diameter) had high antibacterial activity and high antitumor activity against HCT-116 cells (colonic carcinoma) with IC50 values of 0.7-100 µg/mL. Biosynthesized NPs are considered an alternative to large-scale biosynthesized metallic nanoparticles and nanocomposites, are simple and cost effective, and provide stable nanomaterials.

Study of Rh/TiO2–SiO2 system in photolytic water splitting

Titania silicates (TiO₂–SiO₂) of various compositions were prepared by a sol–gel method. RhCl₃ was used in 0.2 wt% of Rh quantity on the gel surfaces, which were subsequently exposed to UV irradiation in water under a 355-W UV lamp. λ > 370 nm. Both Rh [I] and Rh [III] surface complexes were formed, depending on the gels composition. They also exhibited various efficiency in photo water splitting reaction, the photocatalysts possessing as supports titania-silica gels containing 40 and 50 mol % of TiO₂, were the most effective. According to our proposal, the rhodium complexes took part in the oxidative addition and reductive elimination cycle, where two water molecules in photo water splitting reaction, yielding hydrogen – H₂ and two hydroxyl radicals. The two hydroxyls radicals, catalytically converted to oxygen atom and water, in the second cycle of the investigated water splitting reaction. Titanium octahedra and silicon tetrahedra linked by Ti–O–Si bridges were thought to be the grouping responsible for activity of the investigated catalysts. Their largest amounts are on the gels containing 40–58 mol % TiO_2.

In Situ Prepared Solar Light-Driven Flexible Actuated Carbon Cloth-Based Nanorod Photocatalyst for Selective Radical-Radical Coupling to Vinyl Sulfides

A global challenge faced by light harvesting photocatalyst is how to promote the selective organic transformation, such as C-S bond formation via radical-radical coupling under solar light. Here, we report a two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs), poly (perylene-imide-benzoquinone) nanorod through in situ condensation on flexible activated carbon cloth (PPIBNR-FACC) to function as a light harvester material for highly selective radical-radical coupling to vinyl sulfides (i.e. C-S bond activation). Such a structure supports charge transfer from PPIBNR to FACC, which is essential for the selective radical-radical coupling. Hence, organic transformation is attaining high yields and selectivity (~99%) under solar light using in situ prepared PPIBNR-FACC photocatalyst. The structural virtues of PPIBNR-FACC will trigger the utmost investigations into designable and versatile 2D-COFs for fine chemical synthesis.

The Photocatalytic and Antibacterial Performance of Nitrogen-Doped TiO2: Surface-Structure Dependence and Silver-Deposition Effect

Catalysts for visible-light-driven oxidative cleaning processes and antibacterial applications (also in the dark) were developed. In order to extend the photoactivity of titanium dioxide into the visible region, nitrogen-doped TiO₂ catalysts with hollow and non-hollow structures were synthesized by co-precipitation (NT-A) and sol–gel (NT-U) methods, respectively. To increase their photocatalytic and antibacterial efficiencies, various amounts of silver were successfully loaded on the surfaces of these catalysts by using a facile photo-deposition technique. Their physical and chemical properties were evaluated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM–EDS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The photocatalytic performances of the synthesized catalysts were examined in coumarin and 1,4-hydroquinone solutions. The results showed that the hollow structure of NT-A played an important role in obtaining high specific surface area and appreciable photoactivity. In addition, Ag-loading on the surface of non-hollow structured NT-U could double the photocatalytic performance with an optimum Ag concentration of 10⁻⁶ mol g⁻¹, while a slight but monotonous decrease was caused in this respect for the hollow surface of NTA upon increasing Ag concentration. Comparing the catalysts with different structures regarding the photocatalytic performance, silverized non-hollow NT-U proved competitive with the hollow NT-A catalyst without Ag-loading for efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic oxidative degradations. The former one, due to the silver nanoparticles on the catalyst surface, displayed an appreciable antibacterial activity, which was comparable to that of a reference material practically applied for disinfection in polymer coatings.

The impact of photocatalytic Ag/TiO2 and Ag/N-TiO2 nanoparticles on human keratinocytes and epithelial lung cells

The potential human health risks following the exposure to inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) is a very important issue for their application in leather finishing industry. The aim of our study was to investigate the cytotoxic effect of silver (Ag)/titanium dioxide (TiO₂) NPs on human cells. Photocatalytic NPs were prepared by electrochemical deposition of Ag on the surface of TiO₂ and nitrogen (N)-TiO₂ NPs and, subsequently, physico-chemical characterized. Then, a set of experiments have been performed to study the cytotoxicity and cell death mechanisms involved, the changes in cell morphology and the production of ROS induced in human keratinocytes (HaCaT) and human lung epithelial cells (A549) by exposure to NPs. Moreover, the changes in major signaling pathways and the inflammatory response induced by Ag/N-TiO₂ NPs in A549 cells were investigated. The data showed that cell death by late apoptosis/necrosis is induced in cells as function of the dose and the type of NPs and is characterized by morphological changes and cytoskeletal disorganization and an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The exposure of A549 cells to Ag/N-TiO₂ NPs determine the activation of ERK1/2 MAP-kinase pathway and the release of pro-inflammatory mediators CXCL1, GM-CSF and MIF, known to be involved in the recruitment of circulating neutrophils and monocytes.
