Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) removal by photocatalysts: A review

Amplified anthropogenic release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) gets worse air quality and human health. Photocatalytic degradation of VOCs is the practical strategy due to its low cost, simplicity, high efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Different types of photocatalyst activated by UV and visible lights are applied for VOC degradation. This review tries to investigate the state-of-art of recently published papers on this subject with a focus on the high-efficiency photocatalyst. The novel photocatalysts are introduced and enhancing photocatalytic activity strategies such as the hybrid of two/three photocatalyst, impurity doping, and heterojunctions with narrow bandgap semiconductors have been explained. The procedures of visible light activation of the photocatalysts are discussed with attention to current problems and future challenges. In addition, effective operational parameters in the photocatalytic degradation of VOCs have been reviewed with their advantages and drawbacks. A series of strategies are developed for the efficient utilization of visible light photocatalysts and improving new materials or design structures to degrade produced toxic intermediates/by-products during photocatalytic degradation of VOCs. This review shows that there are significant challenges in the applications of photocatalysts in the selective removal of VOCs. Several approaches should be combined to produce synergistic effects, which may lead to much higher photocatalytic performance than individual strategies. Another challenge is to develop efficient photocatalysts to meet real problems on an industrial scale.

Fabrication of ZnO@Plant Polyphenols/Cellulose as Active Food Packaging and Its Enhanced Antibacterial Activity

To investigate the efficient use of bioresources and bioproducts, plant polyphenol (PPL) was extracted from larch bark and further applied to prepare ZnO@PPL/Cel with cellulose to examine its potential as an active package material. The structure and morphology were fully characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, XPS and Raman spectra. It was found that PPL is able to cover ZnO and form a coating layer. In addition, PPL cross-links with cellulose and makes ZnO distribute evenly on the cellulose fibers. Coating with PPL creates a pinecone-like morphology in ZnO, which is constructed by subunits of 50 nm ZnO slices. The interactions among ZnO, PPL and cellulose have been attributed to hydrogen bonding, which plays an important role in guiding the formation of composites. The antibacterial properties against Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were tested by the inhibition zone method. Our composite ZnO@PPL/Cel has superior antibacterial activity compared to ZnO/Cel. The antibacterial mechanism has also been elaborated on. The low cost, simple preparation method and good performance of ZnO@PPL/Cel suggest the potential for it to be applied as active food packaging.

Photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by novel mesoporous Ag/ZnO@NiFe2O4 nanorods, inducing radical-mediated acetaminophen degradation under UVA irradiation

A new mesoporous Ag/ZnO@NiFe₂O₄ nanorod was prepared by a facile, low-cost, and environmentally friendly strategy from a bimetallic Fe₂Ni-MIL-88 metal organic framework (MOF), as an effective catalyst and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) photo-activator. The structural, morphological, optical, and magnetic properties, as well as the material composition were investigated by XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, HR-TEM, XPS, DRS, PL, EIS, VSM, N₂ adsorption-desorption and ICP-AES analysis. 1.0% w/w loading of Ag nanoparticles on ZnO_0.04@NiFe₂O₄ led to the best catalytic activity for PMS activation under UVA in acetaminophen (ACT) degradation. The maximum degradation efficiency for ACT was 100% within 15 min (at pH = 7.0), with a first-order rate constant of 0.368 min^-1. The calculated quantum yield (1.3 × 10^-3 molecule/photon) of the optimum catalyst was 2.05, and 5.63 times higher than its simple constituents, ZnO_0.04@NiFe₂O₄ and NiFe₂O₄, respectively. Among the various inorganic ions, Cl^- and HCO₃^- showed significant inhibition effect in 1.0%w/w Ag/ZnO_0.04@NiFe₂O₄/PMS/UVA system, due to radical quenching effects. Based on scavenger experiments, HO^• and SO₄^•- were the dominant reactive species in photocatalytic process coupled with PMS. Due to presence of the Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺, and Ni²⁺/Ni³⁺ reaction cycles in the as-made catalyst, the reaction rate of PMS activation was greatly enhanced. Moreover, the formation of a hetero-junction structure with NiFe₂O₄ and ZnO promoted the charge separation of the photo-generated electron/hole pairs. Finally, the major intermediates produced during the reaction were detected by LC-MS analysis, and a plausible mechanism for the photocatalytic degradation of ACT was proposed and discussed in detail.

Novel Ag/cellulose-doped CeO2 quantum dots for efficient dye degradation and bactericidal activity with molecular docking study

In the present study, the novel Ag/cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-doped CeO₂ quantum dots (QDs) with highly efficient catalytic performance were synthesized using one pot co-precipitation technique, which were then applied in the degradation of methylene blue and ciprofloxacin (MBCF) in wastewater. Catalytic activity against MBCF dye was significantly reduced (99.3%) for (4%) Ag dopant concentration in acidic medium. For Ag/CNC-doped CeO₂ vast inhibition domain of G-ve was significantly confirmed as (5.25-11.70 mm) and (7.15-13.60 mm), while medium- to high-concentration of CNC levels were calculated for G + ve (0.95 nm, 1.65 mm), respectively. Overall, (4%) Ag/CNC-doped CeO₂ revealed significant antimicrobial activity against G-ve relative to G + ve at both concentrations, respectively. Furthermore, in silico molecular docking studies were performed against selected enzyme targets dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS), and DNA gyrase belonging to folate and nucleic acid biosynthetic pathway, respectively to rationalize possible mechanism behind bactericidal potential of CNC-CeO₂ and Ag/CNC-CeO₂.

Harnessing photo/electro-catalytic activity via nano-junctions in ternary nanocomposites for clean energy

Though solar energy availability is predicted for centuries, the diurnal and asymmetrical nature of the sun across the globe presents significant challenges in terms of harvesting sunlight. Photo/electro-catalysis, currently believed to be the bottleneck, promises a potential solution to these challenges along with a green and sustainable environment. This review aims to provide the current highlights on the application of inorganic-semiconductor-based ternary nanocomposites for H2 production and pollutant removal. Various engineering strategies employing integration of 2D materials, 1D nanorods, and/or 0D nanoparticles with inorganic semiconductors to create multiple nano-junctions have been developed for the excellent photocatalytic activity. Following a succinct description of the latest progress in photocatalysts, a discussion on the importance of ternary electrocatalysts in the field of next-generation supercapacitors has been included. Finally, the authors' perspectives are considered briefly, including future developments and critical technical challenges in the ever-growing field of photo/electro-catalysis.
