Highly Selective Extraction of U(VI) from Solutions by Metal Organic Framework-Based Nanomaterials through Sorption, Photochemistry, and Electrochemistry Strategies

With the rapid development of nuclear technology and peaceful utilization of nuclear energy, plentiful U(VI) not only is required to be extracted from solutions for a sustainable nuclear fuel supply but also is inevitably released into the surrounding environment to result in pollution and threaten human health. Thereby, realizing selective extraction of U(VI) from aqueous solutions is crucial for U(VI) pollution control and a sustainable nuclear industry. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained multidisciplinary attention due to their excellent properties including large specific surface areas, tunable pore structures, easy functionalization, etc. This Review comprehensively summarizes the research progress of MOFs and MOF-based materials on U(VI) removal from aqueous solutions by sorption, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, membrane separation, etc. The efficient high extraction ability is dependent on the intrinsic properties of MOFs and the techniques used. The removal properties of MOF-based materials as adsorbents, photocatalysts, and electrocatalysts for U(VI) are discussed. Information about the interaction mechanisms between U(VI) and MOF-based materials are analyzed in-depth, including experiments, theoretical calculations, and advanced spectroscopy analysis. The removal properties for U(VI) of various MOF-based materials are assessed through different techniques. Finally, a summary and perspective on the direction and challenges of MOF-based materials and various pollutant removal technologies are proposed to provide some significant information on designing and fabricating MOF-based materials for environmental pollution management.

In situ modified nanocellulose/alginate hydrogel composite beads for purifying mining effluents

Biobased adsorbents and membranes offer advantages related to resource efficiency, safety, and fast kinetics but have challenges related to their reusability and water flux. Nanocellulose/alginate composite hydrogel beads were successfully prepared with a diameter of about 3-4 mm and porosity as high as 99%. The beads were further modified with in situ TEMPO-mediated oxidation to functionalize the hydroxyl groups of cellulose and facilitate the removal of cationic pollutants from aqueous samples at low pressure, driven by electrostatic interactions. The increased number of carboxyl groups in the bead matrix improved the removal efficiency of the adsorbent without compromising the water throughput rate; being as high as 17 000 L h-1 m-2 bar-1. The absorptivity of the beads was evaluated with UV-vis for the removal of the dye Methylene Blue (91% removal) from spiked water and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) elemental analyses for the removal of Cd2+ from industrial mining effluents. The modified beads showed a 3-fold increase in ion adsorption and pose as excellent candidates for the manufacturing of three-dimensional (3-D) column filters for large-volume, high flux water treatment under atmospheric pressure.

Application of Fe-MOFs in Photodegradation and Removal of Air and Water Pollutants: A Review

Photocatalytic technology has received increasing attention in recent years. A pivotal facet of photocatalytic technology lies in the development of photocatalysts. Porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, distinguished by their unique properties and structural characteristics, have emerged as a focal point of research in the field, finding widespread application in the photo-treatment and conversion of various substances. Fe-based MOFs have attained particular prominence. This review explores recent advances in the photocatalytic degradation of aqueous and gaseous substances. Furthermore, it delves into the interaction between the active sites of Fe-MOFs and pollutants, offering deeper insights into their mechanism of action. Fe-MOFs, as photocatalysts, predominantly facilitate pollutant removal through redox processes, interaction with acid sites, the formation of complexes with composite metal elements, binding to unsaturated metal ligands (CUSs), and hydrogen bonding to modulate their respiratory behavior. This review also highlights the focal points of future research, elucidating the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in harnessing the characteristics and advantages of Fe-MOF composite catalysts. In essence, this review provides a comprehensive summary of research progress on Fe-MOF-based catalysts, aiming to serve as a guiding reference for other catalytic processes.

Recent Advances in the Treatment of Industrial Wastewater from Different Celluloses in Continuous Systems

There are numerous studies on water care methods featured in various academic and research journals around the world. One research area is cellulose residue coupled with continuous systems to identify which are more efficient and easier to install. Investigations have included mathematical design models that provide methods for developing and commissioning industrial wastewater treatment plants, but nothing is provided on how to size and start these treatment systems. Therefore, the objective is to determine recent advances in the treatment of industrial wastewater from different celluloses in continuous systems. The dynamic behavior of the research results with cellulose biomasses was analyzed with the mass balance model and extra-particle and intraparticle dispersion, evaluating adsorption capacities, design variables, and removal constants, and making a size contribution for each cellulose analyzed using adsorption capacities. A mathematical model was also developed that feeds on cellulose reuse, determining new adsorption capacities and concluding that the implementation of cellulose waste treatment systems has a high feasibility due to low costs and high adsorption capacities. Furthermore, with the design equations, the companies themselves could design their systems for the treatment of water contaminated with heavy metals with cellulose.

Synthesis of Aluminum-Based Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)-Derived Carbon Nanomaterials and Their Water Adsorption Isotherm

The characteristics of water vapor adsorption depend on the structure, porosity, and functional groups of the material. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon (MDC) is a novel material that exhibits a high specific area and tunable pore sizes by exploiting the stable structure and porosity of pure MOF materials. Herein, two types of aluminum-based MOFs were used as precursors to synthesize hydrophobic microporous C-MDC and micro-mesoporous A-MDC via carbonization and activation depending on the type of ligands in the precursors. C-MDC and A-MDC have different pore characteristics and exhibit distinct water adsorption properties. C-MDC with hydrophobic properties and micropores exhibited negligible water adsorption (108.54 mgg-1) at relatively low pressures (P/P0~0.3) but showed a rapid increase in water adsorption ability (475.7 mgg-1) at relative pressures of about 0.6. A comparison with the isotherm model indicated that the results were consistent with the theories, which include site filling at low relative pressure and pore filling at high relative pressure. In particular, the Do-Do model specialized for type 5 showed excellent agreement.

MWCNTs Decorated with TiO2 as Highly Performing Filler in the Preparation of Nanocomposite Membranes for Scalable Photocatalytic Degradation of Bisphenol A in Water

Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine-disrupting compound with estrogenic behavior, is of great concern within the scientific community due to its high production levels and increasing concentration in various surface aquifers. While several materials exhibit excellent capacity for the photocatalytic degradation of BPA, their powdered nature and poor chemical stability render them unsuitable for practical application in large-scale water decontamination. In this study, a new class of nanocomposite membranes based on sulfonated polyethersulfone (sPES) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes decorated with TiO2 nanoparticles (MWCNTs-TiO2) were investigated as efficient and scalable photocatalysts for the photodegradation of BPA in aqueous solutions. The MWCNTs-TiO2 hybrid material was prepared through a facile and inexpensive hydrothermal method and extensively characterized by XRD, Raman, FTIR, BET, and TGA. Meanwhile, nanocomposite membranes at different filler loadings were prepared by a simple casting procedure. Swelling tests and PFG NMR analyses provided insights into the impact of filler introduction on membrane hydrophilicity and water molecular dynamics, whereas the effectiveness of the various photocatalysts in BPA removal was monitored using HPLC. Among the different MWCNTs-TiO2 content nanocomposites, the one at 10 wt% loading (sP-MT10) showed the best photoactivity. Under UV irradiation at 254 nm and 365 nm for 240 min, photocatalytic oxidation of 5 mg/L bisphenol A by sP-MT10 resulted in 91% and 82% degradation, respectively. Both the effect of BPA concentration and the membrane regenerability were evaluated, revealing that the sP-MT10 maintained its maximum BPA removal capability over more than 10 cycles. Our findings indicate that sP-MT nanocomposite membranes are versatile, scalable, efficient, and highly reusable photocatalysts for the degradation of BPA, as well as potentially for other endocrine disruptors.

Functional MOF-Based Materials for Environmental and Biomedical Applications: A Critical Review

Over the last ten years, there has been a growing interest in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are a unique category of porous materials that combine organic and inorganic components. MOFs have garnered significant attention due to their highly favorable characteristics, such as environmentally friendly nature, enhanced surface area and pore volume, hierarchical arrangements, and adjustable properties, as well as their versatile applications in fields such as chemical engineering, materials science, and the environmental and biomedical sectors. This article centers on examining the advancements in using MOFs for environmental remediation purposes. Additionally, it discusses the latest developments in employing MOFs as potential tools for disease diagnosis and drug delivery across various ailments, including cancer, diabetes, neurological disorders, and ocular diseases. Firstly, a concise overview of MOF evolution and the synthetic techniques employed for creating MOFs are provided, presenting their advantages and limitations. Subsequently, the challenges, potential avenues, and perspectives for future advancements in the utilization of MOFs in the respective application domains are addressed. Lastly, a comprehensive comparison of the materials presently employed in these applications is conducted.

Recent Advances in Membranes Used for Nanofiltration to Remove Heavy Metals from Wastewater: A Review

The presence of heavy metal ions in polluted wastewater represents a serious threat to human health, making proper disposal extremely important. The utilization of nanofiltration (NF) membranes has emerged as one of the most effective methods of heavy metal ion removal from wastewater due to their efficient operation, adaptable design, and affordability. NF membranes created from advanced materials are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to depollute wastewater in a variety of circumstances. Tailoring the NF membrane's properties to efficiently remove heavy metal ions from wastewater, interfacial polymerization, and grafting techniques, along with the addition of nano-fillers, have proven to be the most effective modification methods. This paper presents a review of the modification processes and NF membrane performances for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater, as well as the application of these membranes for heavy metal ion wastewater treatment. Very high treatment efficiencies, such as 99.90%, have been achieved using membranes composed of polyvinyl amine (PVAM) and glutaraldehyde (GA) for Cr³⁺ removal from wastewater. However, nanofiltration membranes have certain drawbacks, such as fouling of the NF membrane. Repeated cleaning of the membrane influences its lifetime.

Recent Advanced Synthesis Strategies for the Nanomaterial-Modified Proton Exchange Membrane in Fuel Cells

Hydrogen energy is converted to electricity through fuel cells, aided by nanostructured materials. Fuel cell technology is a promising method for utilizing energy sources, ensuring sustainability, and protecting the environment. However, it still faces drawbacks such as high cost, operability, and durability issues. Nanomaterials can address these drawbacks by enhancing catalysts, electrodes, and fuel cell membranes, which play a crucial role in separating hydrogen into protons and electrons. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have gained significant attention in scientific research. The primary objectives are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in the automotive industry, and develop cost-effective methods and materials to enhance PEMFC efficiency. We provide a typical yet inclusive review of various types of proton-conducting membranes. In this review article, special focus is given to the distinctive nature of nanomaterial-filled proton-conducting membranes and their essential characteristics, including their structural, dielectric, proton transport, and thermal properties. We provide an overview of the various reported nanomaterials, such as metal oxide, carbon, and polymeric nanomaterials. Additionally, the synthesis methods in situ polymerization, solution casting, electrospinning, and layer-by-layer assembly for proton-conducting membrane preparation were analyzed. In conclusion, the way to implement the desired energy conversion application, such as a fuel cell, using a nanostructured proton-conducting membrane has been demonstrated.

Performance of Rod-Shaped Ce Metal-Organic Frameworks for Defluoridation

The performance of a Ce(III)-4,4',4″-((1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl) tris (azanediyl)) tribenzoic acid-organic framework (Ce-H3TATAB-MOFs) for capturing excess fluoride in aqueous solutions and its subsequent defluoridation was investigated in depth. The optimal sorption capacity was obtained with a metal/organic ligand molar ratio of 1:1. The morphological characteristics, crystalline shape, functional groups, and pore structure of the material were analyzed via SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and N₂ adsorption-desorption experiments, and the thermodynamics, kinetics, and adsorption mechanism were elucidated. The influence of pH and co-existing ions for defluoridation performance were also sought. The results show that Ce-H3TATAB-MOFs is a mesoporous material with good crystallinity, and that quasi-second kinetic and Langmuir models can describe the sorption kinetics and thermodynamics well, demonstrating that the entire sorption process is a monolayer-governed chemisorption. The Langmuir maximum sorption capacity was 129.7 mg g^-1 at 318 K (pH = 4). The adsorption mechanism involves ligand exchange, electrostatic interaction, and surface complexation. The best removal effect was reached at pH 4, and a removal effectiveness of 76.57% was obtained under strongly alkaline conditions (pH 10), indicating that the adsorbent has a wide range of applications. Ionic interference experiments showed that the presence of PO₄^3- and H₂PO₄^- in water have an inhibitory effect on defluoridation, whereas SO₄^2-, Cl^-, CO₃^2-, and NO₃^- are conducive to the adsorption of fluoride due to the ionic effect.

Preparation of Biochar with Developed Mesoporous Structure from Poplar Leaf Activated by KHCO3 and Its Efficient Adsorption of Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride

The effective removal of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) from the water environment is of great importance. Adsorption as a simple, stable, and cost-effective technology is regarded as an important method for removing OTC. Herein, a low-cost biochar with a developed mesoporous structure was synthesized via pyrolysis of poplar leaf with potassium bicarbonate (KHCO₃) as the activator. KHCO₃ can endow biochar with abundant mesopores, but excessive KHCO₃ cannot continuously promote the formation of mesoporous structures. In comparison with all of the prepared biochars, PKC-4 (biochar with a poplar leaf to KHCO₃ mass ratio of 5:4) shows the highest adsorption performance for OTC as it has the largest surface area and richest mesoporous structure. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich equilibrium model are more consistent with the experimental data, which implies that the adsorption process is multi-mechanism and multi-layered. In addition, the maximum adsorption capacities of biochar are slightly affected by pH changes, different metal ions, and different water matrices. Moreover, the biochar can be regenerated by pyrolysis, and its adsorption capacity only decreases by approximately 6% after four cycles. The adsorption of biochar for OTC is mainly controlled by pore filling, though electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interaction are also involved. This study realizes biomass waste recycling and highlights the potential of poplar leaf-based biochar for the adsorption of antibiotics.

Effective Removal of Methylene Blue by Mn3O4/NiO Nanocomposite under Visible Light

Wastewater treatment is indispensable as wastewater can lead to adverse health effects and deteriorate the quality of life on earth. Photocatalysis is a facile methodology to address this issue. In this study, nanocomposites (NCs) of manganese oxide (Mn3O4) and nickel oxide (NiO) were synthesized in different weight ratios via the solid-state reaction route. Structural properties, optical properties, surface morphology, and functional group analysis of the synthesized nanomaterials were conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV– Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) along with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, respectively. The bandgap of the nanocomposite decreases significantly from 2.35 eV for the Mn3O4 NPs to 1.65 eV for the Mn3O4/NiO nanocomposite (NC). Moreover, adsorption studies followed by the photocatalytic performance of the Mn3O4/NiO NCs were evaluated to determine the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye from wastewater. The photocatalytic performance of the nanocomposite enhances as the ratio of Mn3O4 in the composite increases from one weight percentage to three weight percentage. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency was calculated to be 95%. The results show that the synthesized NCs could play an important role in photocatalytic wastewater purification and environmental remediation.

Chitosan-Bead-Encapsulated Polystyrene Sulfonate for Adsorption of Methylene Blue and Regeneration Studies: Batch and Continuous Approaches

Textile industrialization causes water pollution due to the discharge of industrial effluents into the environment. To reduce the impact of industrial effluent, it must be treated in wastewater treatment plants before discharge into rivers. Among all wastewater treatment approaches, the adsorption process is one method to remove pollutants from wastewater, but it has some limitations in term of reusability and ionic selective adsorption properties. In this study, we prepared cationic poly (styrene sulfonate) (PSS)-incorporated anionic chitosan beads synthesized using the oil-water emulsion coagulation method. The produced beads were characterized using FESEM and FTIR analysis. In batch adsorption studies, the PSS-incorporated chitosan beads exhibited monolayer adsorption processes, that is, exothermic processes that occur spontaneously at low temperatures, which were analyzed based on the adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, and thermodynamics model fittings. The presence of PSS enables cationic methylene blue dye to adsorb to the anionic chitosan structure via electrostatic interaction between the sulfonic group and the dye molecule. The maximum adsorption capacity of PSS-incorporated chitosan beads achieved 42.21 mg/g, as calculated from the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Finally, the PSS-incorporated chitosan beads demonstrated good regeneration with different types of reagents, especially using sodium hydroxide as a regeneration reagent. With the use of sodium hydroxide regeneration of this adsorbent material, a continuous adsorption setup also demonstrated that PSS-incorporated chitosan beads can be reused for methylene blue adsorption for up to three cycle processes.

Synthesis of Ruthenium-Promoted ZnO/SBA-15 Composites for Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue Dye

Synthetic organic pigments like xanthene and azo dyes from the direct discharge of textile effluents are considered colossal global issues and attract the concern of scholars. Photocatalysis continues to be a very valuable pollution control method for industrial wastewater. Incorporations of metal oxide catalysts such as zinc oxide (ZnO) on mesoporous Santa Barbara Armophous-15 (SBA-15) support to improve catalyst thermo-mechanical stability have been comprehensively reported. However, charge separation efficiency and light absorption of ZnO/SBA-15 continue to be limiting its photocatalytic activity. Herein, we report a successful preparation of Ruthenium-induced ZnO/SBA-15 composite via conventional incipient wetness impregnation technique with the aim of boosting the photocatalytic activity of the incorporated ZnO. Physicochemical properties of the SBA-15 support, ZnO/SBA-15, and Ru-ZnO/SBA-15 composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N₂ physisorption isotherms at 77 K, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The characterization outcomes exhibited that ZnO and ruthenium species have been successfully embedded into SBA-15 support, andtheSBA-15 support maintains its structured hexagonal mesoscopic ordering in both ZnO/SBA-15 and Ru-ZnO/SBA-15 composites. The photocatalytic activity of the composite was assessed through photo-assisted mineralization of aqueous MB solution, and the process was optimized for initial dye concentration and catalyst dosage. 50 mg catalyst exhibited significant degradation efficiency of 97.96% after 120 min, surpassing the efficiencies of 77% and 81% displayed by 10 and 30 mg of the as-synthesized catalyst. The photodegradation rate was found to decrease with an increase in the initial dye concentration. The superior photocatalytic activity of Ru-ZnO/SBA-15 over the binary ZnO/SBA-15 may be attributed to the slower recombination rate of photogenerated charges on the ZnO surface with the addition of ruthenium.

Collaboration of two-star nanomaterials: The applications of nanocellulose-based metal organic frameworks composites

Nanocellulose, as the star nanomaterial in carbohydrate polymers, has excellent mechanical properties, biodegradability, and easy chemical modification. However, further practical applications of nanocellulose are limited by their inadequate functionalization. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as the star nanomaterial in functional polymers, have a large surface area, high porosity, and adjustable structure. The collaboration of nanocellulose and MOFs is a desirable strategy to make composites especially interesting for multifunctional and multi-field applications. What sparks will be produced by the collaboration of two-star nanomaterials? In this review article, we highlight an up-to-date overview of nanocellulose-based MOFs composites. The sewage treatment, gas separation, energy storage, and biomedical applications are mainly summarized. Finally, the challenges and research trends of nanocellulose-based MOFs composites are prospected. We hope this review may provide a valuable reference for the development and applications of carbohydrate polymer composites soon.

Chitosan Nanoparticles as Potential Nano-Sorbent for Removal of Toxic Environmental Pollutants

Adsorption is the most widely used technique for advanced wastewater treatment. The preparation and application of natural renewable and environmentally friendly materials makes this process easier and more profitable. Chitosan is often used as an effective biomaterial in the adsorption world because of its numerous functional applications. Chitosan is one of the most suitable and functionally flexible adsorbents because it contains hydroxyl (-OH) and amine (-NH₂) groups. The adsorption capacity and selectivity of chitosan can be further improved by introducing additional functions into its basic structure. Owing to its unique surface properties and adsorption ability of chitosan, the development and application of chitosan nanomaterials has gained significant attention. Here, recent research on chitosan nanoparticles is critically reviewed by comparing various methods for their synthesis with particular emphasis on the role of experimental conditions, limitations, and applications in water and wastewater treatment. The recovery of pollutants using magnetic nanoparticles is an important treatment process that has contributed to additional development and sustainable growth. The application of such nanoparticles in the recovery metals, which demonstrates a "close loop technology" in the current scenarios, is also presented in this review.

Plasma Meets MOFs: Synthesis, Modifications, and Functionalities

As a porous and network materials consisting of metals and organic ligands, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become one of excellent crystalline porous materials and play an important role in the era about materials science. Plasma, as a useful tool for stimulating efficient reactions under many conditions, and the plasma-assisted technology gets more attractions and endows MOFs more properties. Based on its feature, the research about the modifications and functionalities of MOFs have been developing a certain extent. This review contains a description of the methods for plasma-assisted modification and synthesis of MOFs, with specifically focusing on the plasma-assisted potential for modifications and functionalities of MOFs. The different applications of plasma-assisted MOFs were also presented.

Uranium extraction from seawater: material design, emerging technologies and marine engineering

Uranium extraction from seawater (UES), a potential approach to securing the long-term uranium supply and sustainability of nuclear energy, has experienced significant progress in the past decade. Promising adsorbents with record-high capacities have been developed by diverse innovative synthetic strategies, and scale-up marine field tests have been put forward by several countries. However, significant challenges remain in terms of the adsorbents' properties in complex marine environments, deployment methods, and the economic viability of current UES systems. This review presents an up-to-date overview of the latest advancements in the UES field, highlighting new insights into the mechanistic basis of UES and the methodologies towards the function-oriented development of uranium adsorbents with high adsorption capacity, selectivity, biofouling resistance, and durability. A distinctive emphasis is placed on emerging electrochemical and photochemical strategies that have been employed to develop efficient UES systems. The most recent achievements in marine tests by the major countries are summarized. Challenges and perspectives related to the fundamental, technical, and engineering aspects of UES are discussed. This review is envisaged to inspire innovative ideas and bring technical solutions towards the development of technically and economically viable UES systems.

Thermal, Mechanical and Dielectric Properties of Polyimide Composite Films by In-Situ Reduction of Fluorinated Graphene

Materials with outstanding mechanical properties and excellent dielectric properties are increasingly favored in the microelectronics industry. The application of polyimide (PI) in the field of microelectronics is limited because of the fact that PI with excellent mechanical properties does not have special features in the dielectric properties. In this work, PI composite films with high dielectric properties and excellent mechanical properties are fabricated by in-situ reduction of fluorinated graphene (FG) in polyamide acid (PAA) composites. The dielectric permittivity of pure PI is 3.47 and the maximum energy storage density is 0.664 J/cm³ at 100 Hz, while the dielectric permittivity of the PI composite films reaches 235.74 under the same conditions, a 68-times increase compared to the pure PI, and the maximum energy storage density is 5.651, a 9-times increase compared to the pure PI films. This method not only solves the problem of the aggregation of the filler particles in the PI matrix and maintains the intrinsic excellent mechanical properties of the PI, but also significantly improves the dielectric properties of the PI.

Template-Free Synthesis of Magnetic La-Mn-Fe Tri-Metal Oxide Nanofibers for Efficient Fluoride Remediation: Kinetics, Isotherms, Thermodynamics and Reusability

The occurrence of fluoride contamination in drinking water has gained substantial concern owing to its serious threat to human health. Traditional adsorbents have shortcomings such as low adsorption capacity and poor selectivity, so it is urgent to develop new adsorbents with high adsorption capacity, renewable and no secondary pollution. In this work, magnetic electrospun La-Mn-Fe tri-metal oxide nanofibers (LMF NFs) for fluoride recovery were developed via electrospinning and heat treatment, and its defluoridation property was evaluated in batch trials. Modern analytical tools (SEM, BET, XRD, FTIR) were adopted to characterize the properties of the optimized adsorbent, i.e., LMF11 NFs with a La:Mn molar ratio of 1:1. The surface area calculated via BET method and pH_pzc assessed using pH drift method of LMF11 NFs were 55.81 m² g^-1 and 6.47, respectively. The results indicated that the adsorption amount was highly dependent on the pH of the solution, and reached the highest value at pH = 3. The kinetic behavior of defluoridation on LMF11 NFs was dominated by the PSO model with the highest fitted determination coefficients of 0.9999. Compared with the other three isotherm models, the Langmuir model described defluoridation characteristics well with larger correlation coefficients of 0.9997, 0.9990, 0.9987 and 0.9976 at 15 °C, 25 °C, 35 °C and 45 °C, respectively. The optimized LMF11 NFs exhibited superior monolayer defluoridation capacities for 173.30-199.60 mg F^-/g at pH 3 at 15-45 °C according to the Langmuir isotherm model. A thermodynamic study proved that the defluoridation by LMF11 NFs is a spontaneous, endothermic along with entropy increase process. In addition, the LMF11 NFs still showed high defluoridation performance after three reused cycles. These findings unveil that the synthesized LMF11 NFs adsorbent is a good adsorbent for fluoride remediation from wastewater owing to its low cost, high defluoridation performance and easy operation.

Recent Advances in Continuous MOF Membranes for Gas Separation and Pervaporation

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a sub-group of porous crystalline materials, have been receiving increasing attention for gas separation and pervaporation because of their high thermal and chemical stability, narrow window sizes, as well as tuneable structural, physical, and chemical properties. In this review, we comprehensively discuss developments in the formation of continuous MOF membranes for gas separation and pervaporation. Additionally, the application performance of continuous MOF membranes in gas separation and pervaporation are analysed. Lastly, some perspectives for the future application of continuous MOF membranes for gas separation and pervaporation are given.

In-Built Fabrication of MOF Assimilated Porous Hollow Carbon from Pre-Hydrolysate for Supercapacitor

With the fast consumption of traditional fossil fuels and the urgent requirement for a low-carbon economy and sustainable development, supercapacitors are gaining more and more attention as a clean energy storage and conversion device. The research on electrode materials for supercapacitors has become a hot topic nowadays. An electrode material for a supercapacitor, comprising the ZIF-67 in-built carbon-based material, was prepared from a biomass pre-hydrolysate via a hydrothermal process. As a by-product of dissolving slurry, the pre-hydrolysate is rich in carbon, which is an excellent biomass resource. The utilization of pre-hydrolysate to prepare carbon energy materials could realize the high value utilization of pre-hydrolysate and the efficient energy conversion of biomass. Meanwhile, the cobalt-based MOF (such as ZIF-67), as a porous crystalline material, has the advantages of having a regular order, high specific surface area and controllable pore size, as well as good thermal and chemical stability. The addition of ZIF-67 modified the morphology and pore structure of the carbon, and the obtained samples showed outstanding electrochemical performance. One- and two-step synthetic processes generated specimens with a coral-like cross-linked structure and a new type of rough, hollow, dandelion-like structure, respectively, and the pore size was in the range of 2.0–5.0 nm, which is conducive to ion transport and charge transfer. In C2-ZIF-67, the hollow structures could effectively prevent the accumulation of the electrochemical active center, which could provide enough space for the shrinkage and expansion of particles to protect them from the interference of electrolytes and the formation of solid electrolyte interphase film layers. Additionally, the plush tentacle structure with low density and a large specific surface area could expose more active sites and a large electrolyte electrode contact area, and short electron and charge transport paths. Importantly, active, free electrons of small amounts of Co-MOF (1 wt%) could be stored and released through the redox reaction, further improving the electrical conductivity of Carbon-ZIF-67 materials in this work. Consequently, C2-ZIF-67 exhibited superior specific capacitance (400 F g⁻¹, at 0.5 A g⁻¹) and stability (90%, after 10,000 cycles).

Biomimetic Nanomaterials: Diversity, Technology, and Biomedical Applications

Biomimetic nanomaterials (BNMs) are functional materials containing nanoscale components and having structural and technological similarities to natural (biogenic) prototypes. Despite the fact that biomimetic approaches in materials technology have been used since the second half of the 20th century, BNMs are still at the forefront of materials science. This review considered a general classification of such nanomaterials according to the characteristic features of natural analogues that are reproduced in the preparation of BNMs, including biomimetic structure, biomimetic synthesis, and the inclusion of biogenic components. BNMs containing magnetic, metal, or metal oxide organic and ceramic structural elements (including their various combinations) were considered separately. The BNMs under consideration were analyzed according to the declared areas of application, which included tooth and bone reconstruction, magnetic and infrared hyperthermia, chemo- and immunotherapy, the development of new drugs for targeted therapy, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory therapy, and bioimaging. In conclusion, the authors’ point of view is given about the prospects for the development of this scientific area associated with the use of native, genetically modified, or completely artificial phospholipid membranes, which allow combining the physicochemical and biological properties of biogenic prototypes with high biocompatibility, economic availability, and scalability of fully synthetic nanomaterials.

ZIF-67/wood derived self-supported carbon composites for electromagnetic interference shielding and sound and heat insulation

Co/C@WC composites showed better electromagnetic shielding performance and also exhibited sound insulation, temperature resistance and good mechanical performance.

Outstanding fluoride removal from aqueous solution by a La-based adsorbent†

A La-based adsorbent was prepared with La(NO₃)₃·6H₂O, 2-methylimidazole and DMF via amide-hydrolysis and used for fluoride decontamination from aqueous water. The obtained adsorbent was lanthanum methanoate (La(COOH)₃). The effects of pH value, initial F⁻ concentration and interfering ions on defluoridation properties of as-prepared La(COOH)₃ were assessed through batch adsorption tests. The adsorption kinetics, isotherm models and thermodynamics were employed to verify the order, nature and feasibility of La(COOH)₃ towards fluoride removal. The results imply that La(COOH)₃ is preferable for defluoridation over a wide pH range of 2 to 9 without interference. Simultaneously, the defluoridation process of La(HCOO)₃ accords to the pseudo-second order model and Langmuir isotherm, revealing chemical adsorption is the main control step. The maximum fluoride capture capacities of La(COOH)₃ at 30, 40 and 50 °C are 245.02, 260.40 and 268.99 mg g⁻¹, respectively. The mechanism for defluoridation by La(COOH)₃ was revealed by PXRD and XPS. To summarize, the as-synthesized La based adsorbent could serve as a promising adsorbent for defluoridation from complex fluoride-rich water.
