Size controlled ultrafine CeO2 nanoparticles produced by the microwave assisted route and their antimicrobial activity

Cerium oxide (CeO₂) nanoparticles (NPs) have a wide range of biological and biomedical applications. This work describes a new methodology for producing ultrafine, highly uniform NPs with controlled sizes using the chemical microwave assisted route. The size of CeO₂-NPs decreased from 10 to 5 nm by increasing the molar ratio of cerium nitrate Ce(NO₃)₃.(6H₂O) to that of hexamethylenetetramine (C₆H₁₂N) from 1:20 to 20:20. Detailed information about their structural characterization was obtained from the XRD, UV-visible, photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, TEM and AFM. These CeO₂-NPs were tested as antimicrobial agent against Gram-negative (Escherichia.coli), Gram-positive (Bacillus.subtilis) bacteria and yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The obtained results showed significant inhibition of these strain even at low concentration of CeO₂-NPs. The CeO₂-NPs with the molar ratio 5:20 had the most effective inhibition against E.coli (~70%) at a concentration of 20 µL. The CeO₂-NPs with the ratio 12:20 were found to be the most effective against B.subtilis (inhibition ~68%). On the other hand, CeO₂-NPs synthesized with the 20:20 molar ratio caused the highest inhibition for S. cerevisiae (~60%). It is observed that at higher NPs concentration (i.e., >20 µL) the inhibition of these strains decreased. The antimicrobial activity may be attributed to the penetrating power of CeO₂-NPs size beside the generated oxygen species radicals that caused inhibition of bacterial growth.

Treatment of fertilizer industry wastewater by catalytic peroxidation process using copper-loaded SBA-15

The present study reports use of the catalytic peroxidation (CPO) method for treatment of actual fertilizer industry wastewater (FIW) by using copper-loaded Santa Barbara amorphous-15 (Cu/SBA-15) catalyst. FIW consists of toxic nitrogenous and phosphorus containing compounds that are not easily degraded by the conventional physicochemical and biological treatment methods. In the present study, Box-Behnken (BB) experimental design methodology was used for optimization of three independent parameters namely catalytic dose (m), initial pH (pHo), and H2O2 concentration. Maximum 83% COD removal was obtained at m = 4.5 g L(-1), pHo = 9.2 and H2O2 concentration = 2.0 mL L(-1). Wastewater and catalyst recovered at optimum treatment condition were characterized by various techniques. UV-visible and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques were used for understanding the treatment mechanism. Textural and thermogravimetric (TGA/DTA) analysis were used for determining the characteristic of catalyst before and after treatment. The stability and performance of the Cu/SBA-15 catalyst was also determined by using the reusability tests.

Synthesis of cerium oxide nanoparticles using Gloriosa superba L. leaf extract and their structural, optical and antibacterial properties

CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were green synthesized using Gloriosa superba L. leaf extract. The synthesized nanoparticles retained the cubic structure, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies. The oxidation states of the elements (C (1s), O (1s) and Ce (3d)) were confirmed by XPS studies. TEM images showed that the NPs possessed spherical shape and particle size of 5nm. The Ce-O stretching bands were observed at 451cm(-1) and 457cm(-1) from the FT-IR and Raman spectra respectively. The band gap of the CeO2 NPs was estimated as 3.78eV from the UV-visible spectrum. From the photoluminescence measurements, the broad emission composed of eight different bands were found. The antibacterial studies performed against a set of bacterial strains showed that Gram positive (G+) bacteria were relatively more susceptible to the NPs than Gram negative (G-) bacteria. The toxicological behavior of CeO2 NPs was found due to the synthesized NPs with uneven ridges and oxygen defects in CeO2 NPs.

Aerobic degradation of petroleum refinery wastewater in sequential batch reactor

The aim of the present work was to study the effect of various parameters affecting the treatment of raw petroleum refinery wastewater (PRW) having chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 350 mg L(-1) and total organic carbon (TOC) of 70 mg L(-1) in sequential batch reactor (SBR). Effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) was studied in instantaneous fill condition. Maximum COD and TOC removal efficiencies were found to be 80% and 84%, respectively, for fill phase of 2 h and react phase of 2 h with fraction of SBR being filled with raw PRW in each cycle being 0.4. Effect of parameters was studied in terms of settling characteristic of treated slurry. Kinetics of treatment process has been studied. FTIR and UV-visible analysis of PRW before and after treatment have been performed so as to understand the degradation mechanism.

Enhanced lithium ion battery cycling of silicon nanowire anodes by template growth to eliminate silicon underlayer islands

It is well-known that one-dimensional nanostructures reduce pulverization of silicon (Si)-based anode materials during Li ion cycling because they allow lateral relaxation. However, even with improved designs, Si nanowire-based structures still exhibit limited cycling stability for extended numbers of cycles, with the specific capacity retention with cycling not showing significant improvements over commercial carbon-based anode materials. We have found that one important reason for the lack of long cycling stability can be the presence of milli- and microscale Si islands which typically form under nanowire arrays during their growth. Stress buildup in these Si island underlayers with cycling results in cracking, and the loss of specific capacity for Si nanowire anodes, due to progressive loss of contact with current collectors. We show that the formation of these parasitic Si islands for Si nanowires grown directly on metal current collectors can be avoided by growth through anodized aluminum oxide templates containing a high density of sub-100 nm nanopores. Using this template approach we demonstrate significantly enhanced cycling stability for Si nanowire-based lithium-ion battery anodes, with retentions of more than ~1000 mA·h/g discharge capacity over 1100 cycles.
