Nurse training for care management: integrative literature review

ABSTRACT Objectives: to identify how nurses are trained to manage care. Methods: an integrative review, guided by the research question: “How does the training of nurses for care management occur?” The studied performed the search on LILACS, BDENF, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, BVS, and SciELO, using combined strategies to select publications indexed in databases and electronic libraries. The analysis involved bibliometric aspects and the evidence on nursing education contained in the articles. The final sample consisted of eight articles. Results: three thematic categories emerged: conceptions and senses; fragmentation of care; and training practices. They showed essential aspects about the nurse training process for care management. Final Considerations: research needs to address conceptions inherent to teaching processes focusing on concepts, significance, and application, engaging the development of macro skills to transpose care beyond theory.

Nurses' perceptions of the sustainability of a standardised assessment for preventing complications in a ICU: a qualitative study

Background: Quality improvement projects have been widely adopted to prevent complications in the ICU. Objective: This paper describes nurses' perceptions of implementation strategies and the potential sustainability of a practice change intervention to prevent complications in a Malaysian ICU. Design: A participatory action research using five focus group discussions were undertaken with 19 nurses in a single ICU in regional Malaysia. Focus group transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: The main themes derived from the interviews were: [1] Empowering staff to embrace evidence-based practices; [2] Staff knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs that impact on behaviour; and [3] management support and leadership are influential in staff behaviours (acceptance & perseverance of change process). Discussion: Resistance to change was recognized as a barrier to adopting evidence based recommendations. There is a need to improve nurses' knowledge, attitude and awareness of the importance of assessment for VAP, CRBSI and PIs in the ICU.

Profile of nursing graduates: competencies and professional insertion

OBJECTIVE

evaluate the profile of the graduates of Nursing a public college from the perception of skills developed during graduation and the process of professional insertion.

METHOD

quantitative, exploratory and descriptive study. The sample was composed of 216 graduates. The data was collected by a validated questionnaire and sent to a population of 470 egresses via electronic mail. For the analysis of the data, frequencies, mean and standard deviation were applied and, for the correlation, the chi-square test.

RESULTS

the majority of the participants were female (88%) and the mean age was 29.62 years. The majority (65%) had an employment relationship, 14% worked in a single institution and 48% started working six months after graduation. Regarding the form of work, 56% work in care, with an average of 4.5 minimum wages and a weekly workload between 37 and 44 hours. The majority reported competence acquisition to practice the profession, assisting the patient in his integrality with ethics and applying technical and scientific concepts in care.

CONCLUSION

the study made it possible to describe the singularities of nurses' education, their insertion in the world of work and the impact on the educational institution, as well as the presentation of specific competences from the perspective of the graduates themselves.

Global nurse/midwife workforce and reproductive health through social ecology lens

OBJECTIVE

To explore how community social ecology factors may be associated with country registered nurse/registered midwife (RN/RM) workforce supply and reproductive health globally.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional design using a social ecology framework was employed.

SAMPLE

Data were retrieved from publicly available websites for 107 countries.

MEASUREMENTS

Dependent variables included RN/RM density, maternal mortality ratios (MMR), and adolescent birth rates (ABR). Independent variables included gender inequality, region, country income classification, education, gross domestic product per capita, government expenditure of spending on education and health, life expectancy, percent of female seats in legislature, and labor force participation factors.

RESULTS

The best fit multivariable model of RN/RM density showed that after adjustment for region, country income and the GII, the percent of females with some secondary education explained most of variation in RN/RM density. The best fit models of MMR and ABR showed that gender inequality explained most of the variation. Other factors in the models were the percent of female seats in legislatures, region, country income class, and mean years of schooling.

CONCLUSIONS

Employing a social ecology model can useful in RN/RM workforce planning and development as countries seek multisectoral strategies for increasing the RN/RM supply and improving reproductive health outcomes.
