Crystallization-Induced Liquid Gate for Tunable Gas Flow Control

Gas flow control is essential in multifarious fields, such as chemical engineering, environmental governance, and biomedical science. More precise regulation, especially tunable gas flow rates, will spark further applications in smart valves, microreactors, and drug delivery. Here, we propose a crystallization-induced liquid gate (CILG) comprising a supersaturated gating liquid confined within a solid framework capable of tunable gas flow rates under steady-state pressure in a simple and compact manner. When ultrasound is employed to stimulate the crystallization, the CILG exhibits different gas transport behaviors due to the adjustable pore sizes modulated by crystal morphologies under varied ultrasound intensities. Additionally, the exothermic crystallization process allows CILG with variable gas permeability to be observable via infrared imaging. Moreover, we demonstrate the potential applications of CILG in infrared-monitored flow-regulating valves and gas-involved chemical reactors.

Building Functional Liquid-Based Interfaces: From Mechanism to Application

Functional liquid-based interfaces, with their inhomogeneous regions that emphasize the functionalized liquids, have attracted much interest as a versatile platform for a broad spectrum of applications, from chemical manufacturing to practical uses. These interfaces leverage the physicochemical characteristics of liquids, alongside dynamic behaviors induced by macroscopic wettability and microscopic molecular exchange balance, to allow for tailored properties within their functional structures. In this Minireview, we provide a foundational overview of these functional interfaces, based on the structural investigations and molecular mechanisms of interaction forces that directly modulate functionalities. Then, we discuss design strategies that have been employed in recent applications, and the crucial aspects that require focus. Finally, we highlight the current challenges in functional liquid-based interfaces and provide a perspective on future research directions.

Visual Biosensing with Specific Liquid-Based Interface Behaviors

Liquid-based interface behaviors at micro/nano or even smaller scales induced by biomolecules take us into a fascinating realm, fostering a deeper understanding and innovation in visual biosensing. This biosensing technology, grounded in specific liquid-based interface behaviors, redefines how diseases can be detected, monitored, and diagnosed in resource-limited settings, providing rapid, cost-effective, and self-testing solutions to the current healthcare landscape. To date, the technology has witnessed significant advancements in visual sensing, driven by diverse liquid-based materials, advanced nanomanufacturing techniques, and a profound understanding of interface-material interactions. In this Perspective, we discuss and elucidate the interface biosensing mechanisms arising from three types, including liquid-solid, liquid-liquid, and liquid-gas interfaces, and we provide insights into the challenges and future development of visual biosensing applications.

Viscous-capillary entrainment on bioinspired millimetric structure for sustained liquid transfer

Liquid entrainment with a solid architecture passing through the fluid-fluid interface is ubiquitous and widely used in industrial processes as a liquid transfer method. Besides liquid properties, solid structures play a core role in entrainment. Although the influence of its macroscopic curvatures and microscale roughness has attracted years of research, the effect and potential of the commonly seen millimetric structures have not been sufficiently explored and exploited. Here, we demonstrate enhanced liquid entrainment on the millimetric structured surface by the co-effect of viscosity and capillarity for sustained liquid transfer of small deviation, including high-quantity uptake and practically operational drainage with small and relatively uniform droplet dripping time of varied liquid viscosities. With the overall process of viscous-capillary entrainment, we achieve stable cyclical arrayed liquid transport, showing its potential for sustained liquid transfer in intractable situations in laboratory, industry, and even daily life.

Non-Newtonian fluid gating membranes with acoustically responsive and self-protective gas transport control

Control of gas transport through porous media is desired in multifarious processes such as chemical reactions, interface absorption, and medical treatment. Liquid gating technology, based on dynamically adaptive interfaces, has been developed in recent years and has shown excellent control capability in gas manipulation-the reversible opening and closing of a liquid gate for gas transport as the applied pressure changes. Here, we report a new strategy to achieve self-protective gas transport control by regulating the dynamic porous interface in a non-Newtonian fluid gating membrane based on the shear thickening fluid. The gas transport process can be suspended and restored via modulation of the acoustic field, owing to the transition of particle-to-particle interactions in a confined geometry. Our experimental and theoretical results support the stability and tunability of the gas transport control. In addition, relying on the shear thickening behaviour of the gating fluid, the transient response can be achieved to resist high-impact pressure. This strategy could be utilized to design integrated smart materials used in complex and extreme environments such as hazardous and explosive gas transportation.

Membranes for the life sciences and their future roles in medicine

Since the global outbreak of COVID-19, membrane technology for clinical treatments, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and protective masks and clothing, has attracted intense research attention for its irreplaceable abilities. Membrane research and applications are now playing an increasingly important role in various fields of life science. In addition to intrinsic properties such as size sieving, dissolution and diffusion, membranes are often endowed with additional functions as cell scaffolds, catalysts or sensors to satisfy the specific requirements of different clinical applications. In this review, we will introduce and discuss state-of-the-art membranes and their respective functions in four typical areas of life science: artificial organs, tissue engineering, in vitro blood diagnosis and medical support. Emphasis will be given to the description of certain specific functions required of membranes in each field to provide guidance for the selection and fabrication of the membrane material. The advantages and disadvantages of these membranes have been compared to indicate further development directions for different clinical applications. Finally, we propose challenges and outlooks for future development.

Wetting-Induced Water Promoted Flow on Tunable Liquid-Liquid Interface-Based Nanopore Membrane System

Membrane separation provides effective methods for solving the global water crisis. Contemporary membrane systems depend on interfacial interactions between liquid and solid membrane matrixes. However, it may lead to a limiting permeate flux due to the large flow resistance at hydrophobic liquid-solid interfaces. Herein, the liquid-liquid interface with improved interface energy is reversibly introduced in membrane systems to boost wetting and reduce transport resistance. A series of interfaces were systematically explored to reveal mechanisms of wetting and boosted flow performances, which are further supported by simulations. Findings of this study highlight that interfacial liquids with lower surface energies, lower viscosities, and higher solubilities can effectively improve water flow without sacrificing rejection performance, achieving by transforming a solid-liquid interface into liquid-liquid interface interaction. It provides a concept to design advanced membrane systems for water purification (e.g., desalination and oil-water separation) and energy conversion processes.

Ultrahigh efficient emulsification with drag-reducing liquid gating interfacial behavior

Emulsification is a crucial technique for mixing immiscible liquids into droplets in numerous areas ranging from food to medicine to chemical synthesis. Commercial emulsification methods are promising for high production, but suffer from high energy input. Here, we report a very simple and scalable emulsification method that employs the drag-reducing liquid gating structure to create a smooth liquid-liquid interface for the reduction of resistance and tunable generation of droplets with good uniformity. Theoretical modeling and experimental results demonstrate that our method exhibits ultrahigh efficiency, which can reach up to more than 4 orders of magnitude greater energy-saving compared to commercial methods. For temperature-sensitive biological components, such as enzymes, proteins, and bacteria, it can offer a comfortable environment to avoid exposure to high temperatures during emulsifying, and the interface also enables the suppression of fouling. This unique drag-reducing liquid gating interfacial emulsification mechanism promotes the efficiency of droplet generation and provides fresh insight into the innovation of emulsifications that can be applied in many fields, including the food industry, the daily chemical industry, biomedicine, material fabrication, the petrochemical industry, and beyond.

Self-Oscillating Liquid Gating Membranes with Periodic Gas Transport

Liquid gating membranes with molecular-level smooth liquid lining layers break through the limitations of traditional porous membrane materials in gas transport control. Owing to the stable, self-healing, and reconfigurable properties, liquid gating membranes have shown wide application prospects in microfluidics, intelligent valves, chemical reactions, and beyond. Here, we develop a periodic gas transport control system based on the self-oscillating liquid gating membrane. Under continuous gas injection, the gas–liquid interface is reversibly deformed, enabling self-oscillating behavior for discontinuous and periodic gas transport without the need for any complex external changes to the original system. Meanwhile, our experimental analysis reveals that the periodic time and periodic gas release in the system can be regulated. Based on the cycle stability of the system, we further demonstrate the controllability of the system for periodic droplet manipulation in microfluidics. Looking forward, it will offer new opportunities for various applications, such as pneumatic robots, gas-involved chemical reactions, droplet microfluidics, and beyond.

Carbon Dioxide Chemically Responsive Switchable Gas Valves with Protonation-Induced Liquid Gating Self-Adaptive Systems

Carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) capture and storage technologies are promising to limit CO₂ emission from anthropogenic activities, to achieve carbon neutrality goals. CO₂ capture requires one to separate CO₂ from other gases, and therefore a gas flow system that exhibits discernible gating behaviors for CO₂ would be very useful. Here we propose a self-adaptive CO₂ gas valve composed of chemically responsive liquid gating systems. The transmembrane critical pressures of the liquid gate vary upon the presence of CO₂ , due to the superamphiphiles assembled by poly(propylene glycol) bis(2-aminopropyl ether) and oleic acid in gating liquids that are protonated specifically by CO₂ . It is shown that the valve can perform self-adaptive regulation for specific gases and different concentrations of CO₂ . This protonation-induced liquid gating mechanism opens a potential platform for applications of CO₂ separators, detectors, sensors and beyond.

Bioinspired Photo-Responsive Liquid Gating Membrane

Stomata in the plant leaves are channels for gas exchange between the plants and the atmosphere. The gas exchange rate can be regulated by adjusting the opening and closing of stoma under the external stimuli, which plays a vital role in plant survival. Under visible light irradiation, the stomata open for gas exchange with the surroundings, while under intense UV light irradiation, the stomata close to prevent the moisture loss of plants from excessive transpiration. Inspired by this stomatal self-protection behavior, we have constructed a bioinspired photo-responsive liquid gating membrane (BPRLGM) through infusing the photo-responsive gating liquid obtained by dissolving the azobenzene-based photo-responsive surfactant molecules (AzoC8F15) in N,N-Dimethylacetamide (DMAC) into nylon porous substrate, which can reversibly switch the open/closed states under different photo-stimuli. Theoretical analysis and experimental data have demonstrated that the reversible photoisomerization of azobenzene-based surfactant molecules induces a change in surface tension of the photo-responsive gating liquid, which eventually results in the reversible variation of substantial critical pressure for gas through BPRLGM under alternating UV (PCritical (off)) and visible (PCritical (on)) light irradiations. Therefore, driven by a pressure difference ΔP between PCritical (on) and PCritical (off), the reversible switches on the open/closed states of this photo-responsive liquid gating membrane can be realized under photo-stimuli. This bioinspired membrane with switchable open/closed liquid gating performance under photo-stimuli has the opportunity to be used in the precise and contactless control of microfluidics.

Energy saving thermal adaptive liquid gating system

Thermal transfer systems involving temperature control through heating, ventilation, and air conditioning applications have emerged as one of the largest energy issues in buildings. Traditional approaches mainly comprise closed and open systems, both of which have certain advantages and disadvantages in a single heating or cooling process. Here we report a thermal adaptive system with beneficial energy-saving properties, which uses functional liquid to exhibit high metastability, providing durability in a temperature-responsive liquid gating system. With an efficient use of energy, this system achieves smart “breathing” during both heating and cooling processes to dynamically tune the indoor temperature. Theoretical modeling and experiments demonstrate that the adaptive, sandwich-structured, membrane-based system can achieve temperature control, producing obvious advantages of energy saving compared with both closed and open systems through the bistable interfacial design of the liquid gating membrane. Further energy saving evaluation of the system on the basis of simulation with current global greenhouse plantation data shows a reduction of energy consumption of 7.9 × 10¹³ kJ/year, a percentage change of ∼11.6%. Because the adaptive system can be applied to a variety of thermal transfer processes, we expect it to prove useful in a wide range of real-world applications.
