Dynamic Modulation of Li2O2 Growth in Li-O2 Batteries through Regulating Oxygen Reduction Kinetics with Photo-Assisted Cathodes

Widely acknowledged that the capacity of Li-O2 batteries (LOBs) should be strongly determined by growth behaviors of the discharge product of lithium peroxide (Li2O2) that follows both coexisting surface and solution pathways. However until now, it remains still challenging to achieve dynamic modulation on Li2O2 morphologies. Herein, the photo-responsive Au nanoparticles (NPs) supported on reduced oxide graphene (Au/rGO) have been utilized as cathode to manipulate oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics by aid of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effects. Thus, we can experimentally reveal the importance of matching ORR kinetics with Li+ migration towards battery performance. Moreover, it is found that Li+ concentration polarization caused "sudden death" of LOBs is supposed to be just a form of suspended animation that could timely recover under irradiation. This work provides us an in-depth explanation on the working mechanism of LOBs from a kinetic perspective, offering valuable insights for the future battery design.

Light-Triggered Reversible Swelling of Polymeric Spheres via Surfactant-Free RAFT Emulsion Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Responsive photonic crystals (RPCs) assembled by monodisperse colloidal particles have attracted enormous interests recently due to their tremendous applications in smart devices. Their structural colors can be determined by the particle sizes. However, the lack of a reliable way to tune the sizes in situ limits their development. Herein, we present an efficient route to solve this problem through the fabrication of spherical polymeric particles with light-triggered reversible swelling behavior via surfactant-free reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization-induced self-assembly. Amphiphilic macro-RAFT agents containing azobenzene groups were synthesized and subsequently employed to mediate the polymerization of methyl methacrylate. Uniform submicron spheres were obtained by modulating solid contents and other parameters. Benefiting from the photoisomerization of azobenzene moieties, the particle sizes expanded and contracted upon alternative ultraviolet/visible light irradiation accordingly. This strategy will be a supplement to the emulsion PISA and especially give aid to the progress of the RPC materials.

Peroxidase-like MoS2/Ag nanosheets with synergistically enhanced NIR-responsive antibacterial activities

Pathogenic microbial infections have been threatening public health all over the world, which makes it highly desirable to develop an antibiotics-free material for bacterial infection. In this paper, molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) nanosheets loaded with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were constructed to inactive bacteria rapidly and efficiently in a short period under a near infrared (NIR) laser (660 nm) in the presence of H₂O₂. The designed material presented favorable features of peroxidase-like ability and photodynamic property, which endowed it with fascinating antimicrobial capacity. Compared with free MoS₂ nanosheets, the MoS₂/Ag nanosheets (denoted as MoS₂/Ag NSs) exhibited better antibacterial performance against Staphylococcus aureus by the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) from both peroxidase-like catalysis and photodynamic, and the antibacterial efficiency of MoS₂/Ag NSs could be further improved by increasing the amount of Ag. Results from cell culture tests proved that MoS₂/Ag3 nanosheets had a negligible impact on cell growth. This work provided new insight into a promising method for eliminating bacteria without using antibiotics, and could serve as a candidate strategy for efficient disinfection to treat other bacterial infections.

Fast and Reversible Photoresponsive Self-Assembly Behavior of Rosin-Based Amphiphilic Polymers

Designing stimulus-responsive amphiphilic polymers with a fast photoresponsive self-assembly behavior remains a challenge. Two series of rosin-terminated and azobenzene-terminated amphiphilic polymers (PAM_n and PMA_n) with fast and reversible photoresponsive properties were prepared using rosin-based azobenzene groups and polyethylene glycol, respectively. Under 5-10 s of UV irradiation, the polymers showed trans-to-cis isomerization and reached a photosteady state. For the PAM_n polymer, the absorbance of the absorption peak at 325 nm recovered to more than 95% of the initial value under visible light for 5-10 s, whereas that of the PMA_n polymer recovered completely. Notably, the PAM_n and PMA_n polymers initially self-assembled to vesicles or spherical micelles, and various morphological changes were achieved by manipulating UV irradiation time, with the initial morphology again recovered under dark conditions or visible-light irradiation. Remarkably, vesicles of the PAM₃₄ and PMA₃₄ polymers presented an intermediate open-vesicle state before being completely deformed under UV irradiation because of the existence of a π-π interaction. Finally, the ability of PAM₃₄ and PMA₃₄ polymer vesicles to perform the controlled release and reversible loading of a fluorescent probe was evaluated.

Detecting the Subtle Photo-Responsive Conformational Bistability of Monomeric Azobenzene Functionalized Keggin Polyoxometalates by Using Ion-Mobility Mass Spectrometry

Accurately characterizing the conformational variation of novel molecular assemblies is important but often ignored due to limited characterization methods. Herein, we reported the use of ion-mobility mass spectrometry (IMS/MS) to investigate the conformational changes of four azobenzene covalently functionalized Keggin hybrids (azo-Keggins, compounds 1–4). The as-prepared azo-Keggins showed the general molecular formula of [C₁₆H₃₆N]₄[SiW₁₁O₄₀(Si(CH₂)₃NH–CO(CH₂)_nO–C₆H₄N=NC₆H₄–R)₂] (R = H, n = 0 (1); R = NO₂, n = 0 (2); R = H, n = 5 (3); R = H, n = 10 (4)). The resultant azo-Keggins maintained stable monomeric states in the gas phase with intact molecular structures. Furthermore, the subtle photo-responsive trans-cis conformational variations of azo-Keggins were clearly revealed by the molecular shape-related collision cross-section value difference ranging from 2.44 Ų to 6.91 Ų. The longer the alkyl chains linkers were, the larger the conformational variation was. Moreover, for compounds 1 and 2, higher stability in trans-conformation can be observed, while for compounds 3 and 4, bistability can be achieved for both of them.

Photo-Controlled [4+4] Cycloaddition of Anthryl-Polymer Systems: A Versatile Approach to Fabricate Functional Materials

The reversible photo-induced [4+4] cycloaddition reaction of anthracene enables multiple cycles of dimerization and scission, allowing phototunable linkage of molecular fragments for the synthesis of polymer scaffolds. New functional materials ranging from hydrogels to shape-memory polymers were designed from anthryl-polymer systems because of their diverse photochemical reactivity and responsiveness. Light as an external stimulus allows for the remote and precise spatiotemporal control of materials without the need for additional reagents. Depending on how the photoreactive anthracene moieties were introduced, the interaction of anthryl-polymer systems with light results in various processes such as polymerization, cyclization, and cross-linking. Structural modifications of anthracene derivatives could shift their absorption from the ultraviolet to the visible light region, widening their range of applications including biologically relevant studies. These applications are further diversified and enhanced by the reversibility of the dimerization reaction using light and heat as stimuli. In this review, current developments in the synthesis and photodimerization of anthracene-containing polymers and their emerging applications in the fabrication of new materials are discussed.

Bioinspired Photo-Responsive Liquid Gating Membrane

Stomata in the plant leaves are channels for gas exchange between the plants and the atmosphere. The gas exchange rate can be regulated by adjusting the opening and closing of stoma under the external stimuli, which plays a vital role in plant survival. Under visible light irradiation, the stomata open for gas exchange with the surroundings, while under intense UV light irradiation, the stomata close to prevent the moisture loss of plants from excessive transpiration. Inspired by this stomatal self-protection behavior, we have constructed a bioinspired photo-responsive liquid gating membrane (BPRLGM) through infusing the photo-responsive gating liquid obtained by dissolving the azobenzene-based photo-responsive surfactant molecules (AzoC8F15) in N,N-Dimethylacetamide (DMAC) into nylon porous substrate, which can reversibly switch the open/closed states under different photo-stimuli. Theoretical analysis and experimental data have demonstrated that the reversible photoisomerization of azobenzene-based surfactant molecules induces a change in surface tension of the photo-responsive gating liquid, which eventually results in the reversible variation of substantial critical pressure for gas through BPRLGM under alternating UV (PCritical (off)) and visible (PCritical (on)) light irradiations. Therefore, driven by a pressure difference ΔP between PCritical (on) and PCritical (off), the reversible switches on the open/closed states of this photo-responsive liquid gating membrane can be realized under photo-stimuli. This bioinspired membrane with switchable open/closed liquid gating performance under photo-stimuli has the opportunity to be used in the precise and contactless control of microfluidics.

Trans-Cis Kinetic Study of Azobenzene-4,4'-dicarboxylic Acid and Aluminium and Zirconium Based Azobenzene-4,4'-dicarboxylate MOFs

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous hybrid crystalline materials that consist of organic linkers coordinated to metal centres. The trans–cis isomerisation kinetics of the azobenzene-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid (AZB(COOH)₂) precursor, as well as the Al³⁺ (Al-AZB)- and Zr⁴⁺ (Zr-AZB)-based MOFs with azobenzene-4,4′-dicarboxylate linkers, are presented. The photo-isomerization in the MOFs originates from singly bound azobenzene moieties on the surface of the MOF. The type of solvent used had a slight effect on the rate of isomerization and half-life, while the band gap energies were not significantly affected by the solvents. Photo-responsive MOFs can be classified as smart materials with possible applications in sensing, drug delivery, magnetism, and molecular recognition. In this study, the MOFs were applied in the dye adsorption of congo red (CR) in contaminated water. For both MOFs, the UV-irradiated cis isomer exhibited a slightly higher CR uptake than the ambient-light exposed trans isomer. Al-AZB displayed a dye adsorption capacity of over 95% for both the UV-irradiated and ambient light samples. The ambient light exposed Zr-AZB, and the UV irradiated Zr-AZB had 39.1% and 44.6% dye removal, respectively.

Photoresponsive Palladium and Nickel Catalysts for Ethylene Polymerization and Copolymerization

In this contribution, we install an azobenzene functionality in olefin polymerization catalysts and use light to modulate their properties via photoinduced trans-cis isomerization of the azobenzene moiety. The initially targeted azobenzene-functionalized α-diimine palladium and nickel catalysts are not photoresponsive. To address this issue, an imine-amine system bearing interrupted conjugation with the metal center, and a sandwich-type α-diimine system bearing an azobenzene unit at a position covalently far from the metal center were prepared and studied. We demonstrate that light can be used to tune their properties in ethylene polymerization and copolymerization with polar comonomers, enabling light-induced control of the polymerization processes, polymer microstructures and polymer properties. More interestingly, the light-mediated property changes were attributed to ligand electronic effects in one system and ligand steric effects in the other.

Fabrication and Characterisation of a Photo-Responsive, Injectable Nanosystem for Sustained Delivery of Macromolecules

The demand for biodegradable sustained release carriers with minimally invasive and less frequent administration properties for therapeutic proteins and peptides has increased over the years. The purpose of achieving sustained minimally invasive and site-specific delivery of macromolecules led to the investigation of a photo-responsive delivery system. This research explored a biodegradable prolamin, zein, modified with an azo dye (DHAB) to synthesize photo-responsive azoprolamin (AZP) nanospheres loaded with Immunoglobulin G (IgG). AZP nanospheres were incorporated in a hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel to develop a novel injectable photo-responsive nanosystem (HA-NSP) as a potential approach for the treatment of chorio-retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy. AZP nanospheres were prepared via coacervation technique, dispersed in HA hydrogel and characterised via infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Size and morphology were studied via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS), UV spectroscopy for photo-responsiveness. Rheological properties and injectability were investigated, as well as cytotoxicity effect on HRPE cell lines. Particle size obtained was <200 nm and photo-responsiveness to UV = 365 nm by decreasing particle diameter to 94 nm was confirmed by DLS. Encapsulation efficiency of the optimised nanospheres was 85% and IgG was released over 32 days up to 60%. Injectability of HA-NSP was confirmed with maximum force 10 N required and shear-thinning behaviour observed in rheology studies. In vitro cell cytotoxicity effect of both NSPs and HA-NSP showed non-cytotoxicity with relative cell viability of ≥80%. A biocompatible, biodegradable injectable photo-responsive nanosystem for sustained release of macromolecular IgG was successfully developed.

Evaluation of a Model Photo-Caged Dehydropeptide as a Stimuli-Responsive Supramolecular Hydrogel

Short peptides capped on the N-terminus with aromatic groups are often able to form supramolecular hydrogels, via self-assembly, in aqueous media. The rheological properties of these readily tunable hydrogels resemble those of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and therefore have potential for various biological applications, such as tissue engineering, biosensors, 3D bioprinting, drug delivery systems and wound dressings. We herein report a new photo-responsive supramolecular hydrogel based on a "caged" dehydropeptide (CNB-Phe-ΔPhe-OH 2), containing a photo-cleavable carboxy-2-nitrobenzyl (CNB) group. We have characterized this hydrogel using a range of techniques. Irradiation with UV light cleaves the pendant aromatic capping group, to liberate the corresponding uncaged model dehydropeptide (H-Phe-ΔPhe-OH 3), a process which was investigated by ¹H NMR and HPLC studies. Crucially, this cleavage of the capping group is accompanied by dissolution of the hydrogel (studied visually and by fluorescence spectroscopy), as the delicate balance of intramolecular interactions within the hydrogel structure is disrupted. Hydrogels which can be disassembled non-invasively with temporal and spatial control have great potential for specialized on-demand drug release systems, wound dressing materials and various topical treatments. Both 2 and 3 were found to be non-cytotoxic to the human keratinocyte cell line, HaCaT. The UV-responsive hydrogel system reported here is complementary to previously reported related UV-responsive systems, which are generally composed of peptides formed from canonical amino acids, which are susceptible to enzymatic proteolysis in vivo. This system is based on a dehydrodipeptide structure which is known to confer proteolytic resistance. We have investigated the ability of the photo-activated system to accelerate the release of the antibiotic, ciprofloxacin, as well as some other small model drug compounds. We have also conducted some initial studies towards skin-related applications. Moreover, this model system could potentially be adapted for on-demand "self-delivery", through the uncaging of known biologically active dehydrodipeptides.

Photo-Powered Collapse of Supramolecular Polymers Based on an Overcrowded Alkene Switch

A supramolecular polymer was constructed from a light-driven overcrowded alkene switch modified with two alkylated gallic acid amide pendants (MSP-1). Upon UV irradiation, stable MSP-1 isomerized into unstable MSP-2, which induced the effective collapse of well-defined cross-linked supramolecular polymers, and the reassembly can be realized by aging at low temperature.

Migration of endothelial cells into photo-responsive hydrogels with tunable modulus under the presence of pro-inflammatory macrophages

Cell migration in three-dimensional environment is extremely important for tissue regeneration and other biological processes. In this work, a model system was developed to study how endothelial cells (ECs) migrate into photo-responsive hydrogels under the presence of pro-inflammatory macrophages. The hydrogel was synthesized from hyaluronic acid grafted with coumarin and methacrylate moieties by both carbon-carbon covalent linking and coumarin dimerization under UV irradiation at 365 nm. The structure of the hydrogel was conveniently modulated by UV irradiation at 254 nm to decompose the coumarin dimers, leading to the significant decrease of modulus and increase of swelling ratio and mesh size. Under the presence of M1 macrophages, ECs were induced to migrate into the hydrogels with a different degree. A significant larger net displacement of ECs was found in the softer hydrogel obtained by irradiation with UV at 254 nm than in the stiffer original one at day 7.

Smart Copolymer-Functionalized Flexible Surfaces with Photoswitchable Wettability: From Superhydrophobicity with "Rose Petal" Effect to Superhydrophilicity

Realizing smart surfaces with switchable wettability inspired by nature continues to be fascinating as well as challenging. Herein, we present a versatile dip-coating approach to fabricate smart polymer-functionalized flexible surfaces with photoswitchable superwettability. Decorated with novel acrylate copolymers bearing a trifluoromethyl side chain and fluorine-containing azobenzene derivative moieties, the modified cotton fabric possesses a rose petal-like superhydrophobicity with contact angles larger than 150° and high water adhesion. This smart surface exhibits rapid phototriggered wettability transformation between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity via alternate irradiation with ultraviolet and visible light, respectively. Meanwhile, the as-prepared flexible smart surfaces have excellent chemical and physical stabilities, which could tolerate harsh environmental conditions and repetitive mechanical deformation (e.g., stretching, curling, folding, and twisting) as well as multiple washing. More importantly, based on the excellent photocontrollability, various erasable and rewritable patterns with distinct wetting properties upon selective photoirradiation can be obtained. This simple strategy and the developed smart surface may find more advanced potential applications in controllable liquid transport, patterning droplet microarrays, and microfluidic devices.

Microcapsule-Based Signal Amplification Method for Biomolecules

The direct signal amplification of target molecules could be an effective means of increasing the sensitivity and reducing the size of biosensors. The purpose of this study was to propose a novel signal amplification method suitable for the detection of biomolecules using microcapsules that can quickly respond to concentration variation. This microcapsule-based amplification method consists of two elements-microcapsules and a well-array. The microcapsules consist of (i) an inner shell fabricated through layer-by-layer assembly, (ii) a lipid bilayer, and (iii) loaded target molecules. In this method, the inner surface of the well-array was modified using TiO2 as a photocatalyst. The diameter and thickness of the fabricated micro-capsules for biomarker loading were shown to be 2.7 μm and 78 nm, respectively. An ultraviolet (UV) irradiation time of 5 min was needed when the change in optical density reached 90% saturation of the optical density change. Dye molecules were incorporated into the microcapsules and were subsequently released, and the concentration of the released solution changed in proportion with the encapsulated dye concentration. This demonstrates the proof of concept for this novel signal amplification method based on microcapsules.

Controllable and Stable Deformation of a Self-Healing Photo-Responsive Supramolecular Assembly for an Optically Actuated Manipulator Arm

It is highly challenging to achieve an optically deformable polymer with good controllability, stability, and self-healability for fabricating an optically controlled microrobotics. Here, we present a photo-responsive self-healing supramolecular assembly cross-linked by 3,3',5,5'-azobenzenetetracarboxylic acid (t-Azo) enabling the controllable and stable deformation. The network (PAA-u) of polyacrylic acid (PAA) grafted with 2-ureido-4[1 H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) is formed via multiple intermolecular hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) between UPy and t-Azo moieties. Molecular H-bonds stabilize the cis-isomer, enables stress transfer at the interface, and also contributes to fast healability. The PAA-u/t-Azo assembly shows a green-light-induced bending deformation, which recovers its shape under the irradiation of UV light. On the basis of this controllable and reversible deformation, the PAA-u/t-Azo "hand" realizes reversible light-driven grabbing and releasing of an object by optimizing bending and recovery. The assembly also shows a fast and excellent self-healing performance irradiated by green light during deformation. The multiple-H-bonding-cross-linked assembly with stable deformation and fast self-healability can be used for the development of a multitude of advanced microrobotics.

Photo-responsive Bioactive Surfaces Based on Cucurbit[8]uril-Mediated Host-Guest Interactions of Arylazopyrazoles

A photoswitchable arylazopyrazole (AAP) derivative binds with cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) and methylviologen (MV²⁺) to form a 1:1:1 heteroternary host–guest complex with a binding constant of K_a=2×10³  m⁻¹. The excellent photoswitching properties of AAP are preserved in the inclusion complex. Irradiation with light of a wavelength of 365 and 520 nm leads to quantitative E‐ to Z‐ isomerization and vice versa, respectively. Formation of the Z‐isomer leads to dissociation of the complex as evidenced using ¹H NMR spectroscopy. AAP derivatives are then used to immobilize bioactive molecules and photorelease them on demand. When Arg‐Gly‐Asp‐AAP (AAP–RGD) peptides are attached to surface bound CB[8]/MV²⁺ complexes, cells adhere and can be released upon irradiation. The heteroternary host–guest system offers highly reversible binding properties due to efficient photoswitching and these properties are attractive for designing smart surfaces.

Micellization of Photo-Responsive Block Copolymers

This review focuses on block copolymers featuring different photo-responsive building blocks and self-assembly of such materials in different selective solvents. We have subdivided the specific examples we selected: (1) according to the wavelength at which the irradiation has to be carried out to achieve photo-response; and (2) according to whether irradiation with light of a suitable wavelength leads to reversible or irreversible changes in material properties (e.g., solubility, charge, or polarity). Exemplarily, an irreversible change could be the photo-cleavage of a nitrobenzyl, pyrenyl or coumarinyl ester, whereas the photo-mediated transition between spiropyran and merocyanin form as well as the isomerization of azobenzenes would represent reversible response to light. The examples presented cover applications including drug delivery (controllable release rates), controlled aggregation/disaggregation, sensing, and the preparation of photochromic hybrid materials.

Attenuation of Maladaptive Responses in Aortic Adventitial Fibroblasts through Stimuli-Triggered siRNA Release from Lipid-Polymer Nanocomplexes

Lipid-siRNA assemblies are modified with photo-responsive polymers to enable spatiotemporally-controlled silencing of interleukin 1 beta (IL1β) and cadherin 11 (CDH11), two genes that are essential drivers of maladaptive responses in human aortic adventitial fibroblasts (AoAFs). These hybrid nanocomplexes address the critical challenge of locally mitigating fibrotic actions that lead to the high rates of vascular graft failures. In particular, the lipid-polymer formulations provide potent silencing of IL1β and CDH11 that is precisely modulated by a photo-release stimulus. Moreover, a dynamic modeling framework is used to design a multi-dose siRNA regimen that sustains knockdown of both genes over clinically-relevant timescales. Multi-dose suppression illuminates a cooperative role for IL1β and CDH11 in pathogenic adventitial remodeling and is directly linked to desirable functional outcomes. Specifically, myofibroblast differentiation and cellular proliferation, two of the primary hallmarks of fibrosis, are significantly attenuated by IL1β silencing. Meanwhile, the effects of CDH11 siRNA treatment on differentiation become more pronounced at higher cell densities characteristic of constrictive adventitial remodeling in vivo. Thus, this work offers a unique formulation design for photo-responsive gene suppression in human primary cells and establishes a new dosing method to satisfy the critical need for local attenuation of fibrotic responses in the adventitium surrounding vascular grafts.

Anionic Polymer and Quantum Dot Excipients to Facilitate siRNA Release and Self-Reporting of Disassembly in Stimuli-Responsive Nanocarrier Formulations

The incorporation of anionic excipients into polyplexes is a promising strategy for modulating siRNA binding versus release and integrating diagnostic capabilities; however, specific design criteria and structure-function relationships are needed to facilitate the development of nanocarrier-based theranostics. Herein, we incorporated poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and quantum dot (QD) excipients into photolabile siRNA polyplexes to increase gene silencing efficiencies by up to 100% and enable self-reporting of nanocarrier disassembly. Our systematic approach identified the functional relationships between gene silencing and key parameters such as excipient loading fractions and molecular weights that facilitated the establishment of design rules for optimization of nanocarrier efficacy. For example, we found that PAA molecular weights ∼10-20× greater than that of the coencapsulated siRNA exhibited the most efficient release and silencing. Furthermore, siRNA release assays and RNAi modeling allowed us to generate a PAA "heat map" that predicted gene silencing a priori as a function of PAA molecular weight and loading fraction. QDs further promoted selective siRNA release and provided visual as well as Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based monitoring of the dynamic changes in nanostructure in situ. Moreover, even with the addition of anionic components, our formulations exhibited substantially improved stability and shelf life relative to typical formulations, with complete stability after a week of storage and full activity in the presence of serum. Taken together, this study enabled synergistic improvements in siRNA release and diagnostic capabilities, along with the development of mechanistic insights that are critical for advancing the translation of nucleic acid theranostics into the clinic.

Synthesis and Study of Shape-Memory Polymers Selectively Induced by Near-Infrared Lights via In Situ Copolymerization

Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) selectively induced by near-infrared lights of 980 or 808 nm were synthesized via free radical copolymerization. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer, ethylene glycol dimethylacrylate (EGDMA) as a cross-linker, and organic complexes of Yb(TTA)2AAPhen or Nd(TTA)2AAPhen containing a reactive ligand of acrylic acid (AA) were copolymerized in situ. The dispersion of the organic complexes in the copolymer matrix was highly improved, while the transparency of the copolymers was negligibly influenced in comparison with the pristine cross-linked PMMA. In addition, the thermal resistance of the copolymers was enhanced with the complex loading, while their glass transition temperature, cross-linking level, and mechanical properties were to some extent reduced. Yb(TTA)2AAPhen and Nd(TTA)2AAPhen provided the prepared copolymers with selective photothermal effects and shape-memory functions for 980 and 808 nm NIR lights, respectively. Finally, smart optical devices which exhibited localized transparency or diffraction evolution procedures were demonstrated based on the prepared copolymers, owing to the combination of good transparency and selective light wavelength responsivity.

Coumarin- and Carboxyl-Functionalized Supramolecular Polybenzoxazines Form Miscible Blends with Polyvinylpyrrolidone

In this study, we synthesized a novel multifunctional benzoxazine monomer (Coumarin-COOH BZ), possessing both coumarin and COOH groups, through the reaction of 4-methyl-7-hydroxycoumarin, 4-aminobenzoic acid, and paraformaldehyde in 1,4-dioxane, with the structure confirmed using ¹H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), FTIR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were then employed to monitor the thermal curing behavior of Coumarin-COOH BZ and its blends with poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP), both before and after photodimerization of the coumarin moieties. DSC revealed a single glass transition temperature for each Coumarin-COOH BZ/PVP blend composition; a large positive deviation based on the Kwei equation suggested that strong hydrogen bonding existed between the Coumarin-COOH BZ and PVP segments, confirmed through FTIR spectroscopic analyses. The thermal properties improved (i.e., increased glass transition and thermal degradation temperatures) as a result of the increased crosslinking density after photodimerization under UV exposure.

Fabrications and Applications of Stimulus-Responsive Polymer Films and Patterns on Surfaces: A Review

In the past two decades, we have witnessed significant progress in developing high performance stimuli-responsive polymeric materials. This review focuses on recent developments in the preparation and application of patterned stimuli-responsive polymers, including thermoresponsive layers, pH/ionic-responsive hydrogels, photo-responsive film, magnetically-responsive composites, electroactive composites, and solvent-responsive composites. Many important new applications for stimuli-responsive polymers lie in the field of nano- and micro-fabrication, where stimuli-responsive polymers are being established as important manipulation tools. Some techniques have been developed to selectively position organic molecules and then to obtain well-defined patterned substrates at the micrometer or submicrometer scale. Methods for patterning of stimuli-responsive hydrogels, including photolithography, electron beam lithography, scanning probe writing, and printing techniques (microcontact printing, ink-jet printing) were surveyed. We also surveyed the applications of nanostructured stimuli-responsive hydrogels, such as biotechnology (biological interfaces and purification of biomacromoles), switchable wettability, sensors (optical sensors, biosensors, chemical sensors), and actuators.
