Effects of Fe(II) and humic acid on U(VI) mobilization onto oxidized carbon nanofibers derived from the pyrolysis of bacterial cellulose

The effects of Fe(II) and humic acid on U(VI) immobilization onto oxidized carbon nanofibers (Ox-CNFs, pyrolysis of bacterial cellulose) were investigated by batch, spectroscopic and modeling techniques, with results suggesting that, Ox-CNFs exhibited fast adsorption rate (adsorption equilibrium within 3 h), high adsorption performance (maximum adsorption capacity of 208.4 mg/g), good recyclability (no notable change after five regenerations) in the presence of Fe(II) towards U(VI) from aqueous solutions (e.g., 40 % reduction and 10 % adsorption at pH 8.0), which was attributed to the various oxygen-containing functional groups, excellent chemical stability, large specific surface area and high redox effect. U(VI) adsorption increased with increasing pH from 2.0 to 5.0, then high-level plateau and remarkable decrease were observed at 5.0-6.0 and at pH > 6.0, respectively. According to FT-IR and XPS analysis, a negative correlation between U(VI) reduction and organic in the presence of Fe(II) implied that U(VI) reduction was driven by Fe(II) while inhibited by humic acid. The interaction mechanism of U(VI) on Ox-CNFs was demonstrated to be adsorption and ion exchange at low pH and reduction at high pH according to XPS and surface complexation modeling. These findings filled the knowledge gaps pertaining to the effect of Fe(II) on the transformation and fate of U(VI) in the actual environment. This carbon material with distinctive performance and unique topology offers a potential platform for actual application in environmental remediation.

Quaternization of Composite Algal/PEI Beads for Enhanced Uranium Sorption-Application to Ore Acidic Leachate

The necessity to recover uranium from dilute solutions (for environmental/safety and resource management) is driving research towards developing new sorbents. This study focuses on the enhancement of U(VI) sorption properties of composite algal/Polyethylenimine beads through the quaternization of the support (by reaction with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride). The sorbent is fully characterized by FTIR, XPS for confirming the contribution of protonated amine and quaternary ammonium groups on U(VI) binding (with possible contribution of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, depending on the pH). The sorption properties are investigated in batch with reference to pH effect (optimum value: pH 4), uptake kinetics (equilibrium: 40 min) and sorption isotherms (maximum sorption capacity: 0.86 mmol U g-1). Metal desorption (with 0.5 M NaCl/0.5 M HCl) is highly efficient and the sorbent can be reused for five cycles with limited decrease in performance. The sorbent is successfully applied to the selective recovery of U(VI) from acidic leachate of uranium ore, after pre-treatment (cementation of copper, precipitation of rare earth elements with oxalate, and precipitation of iron). A pure yellow cake is obtained after precipitation of the eluate.

Highly efficient carbonaceous nanofiber/layered double hydroxide nanocomposites for removal of U(VI) from aqueous solutions

The three-dimensional (3D) carbonaceous nanofiber and Ni-Al layered double hydroxide (CNF/LDH) nanocomposite was successfully prepared by a facile one-step hydrothermal methodology. Characterization of scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), XRD, and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) provided a demonstration that the modified CNF/LDH nanocomposite possessed abundant functional groups, for instance, metal-oxygen surface bonding sites (Ni–O as well as Al–O) and free-metal surface bonding sites (C–O, C–O–C, as well as O–C=O). The elimination of representative radionuclide (i.e. U(VI)) on the CNF/LDH nanocomposite from aqueous solutions was explored as a key function of pH, ionic strength, contact time, reaction temperature as well as radionuclide preliminary concentrations with the use of the batch methodology. As revealed by the findings, the sorption of radionuclides on CNF/LDH nanocomposite adhered to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model as well as Langmuir model. The maximum elimination capacity of U(VI) amounted to be 0.7 mmol/g. The independent of ionic strength shed light on the fact that inner-sphere surface complexation mainly overpowered radionuclide uptake by the CNF/LDH nanocomposite, which was further verified through the combination of FTIR and XPS spectral analyses. The abovementioned analyses shed light on the fact that the CNF/LDH nanocomposite can be regarded as a latent material to preconcentration radionuclides for environmental remediation.
