Anchoring Atomically Precise Chiral Bismuth Oxido Nanoclusters on Gold: The Role of Amino Acid Linkers

The adsorption of chiral molecules onto metallic surfaces triggers electron spin polarization at the interface, paving the way for applications in chiral opto-spintronics. However, the spin effects sensitively depend on the binding and ordering of the chiral species on surfaces. This study explores the adsorption of chiral thioether-functionalized atomically precise bismuth oxido nanoclusters (BiO-NCs) on gold (Au) surfaces, extending the conventional approach of using thiol-containing molecules and complexes to nanoclusters. Starting from the precursor [Bi38O45(NO3)20(dmso)28](NO3)4·4dmso (A), chiral BiO-NCs were synthesized by substituting the nitrates with N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-l-methionine (Boc-l-Met-O-) ligands to obtain [Bi38O45(Boc-l-Met-O)24] (2). The full exchange of nitrate by the Boc-l-methionine ligand was demonstrated by powder X-ray diffractograms, dynamic light scattering, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, circular dichroism, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Compared to previously reported [Bi38O45(Boc-l-Phe-O)24(dmso)9] (1), BiO-NC 2 shows differences in the growth mode on a Au surface as revealed by scanning electron microscopy, wherefore a stronger binding of BiO-NC 2 is assumed. Anchoring of BiO-NC 2 to the Au surface through thioether groups induced a discernible change in the optical response of the Au surface analyzed by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). From the numerical modeling of the SE parameters, a layer thickness of ∼2 nm, corresponding to a monolayer of BiO-NC 2, was estimated for the samples prepared by dip coating. Thus, strong adsorption of BiO-NC 2 to the Au surface is concluded, which is an essential prerequisite for chiral-induced interface spin polarization.

Designed Nanoarchitectures of a BiOBr/BiOI Nanosheet Heterojunction Anchored on Dendritic Fibrous Nanosilica as Visible-Light Responsive Photocatalysts

Heterojunctions, particularly those involving BiOBr/BiOI, have attracted significant attention in the field of photocatalysis due to their remarkable properties. In this study, a unique architecture of BiOBr/BiOI was designed to facilitate the rapid transfer of electrons and holes, effectively mitigating the recombination of electron-hole pairs. Accordingly, the BiOBr/BiOI nanosheet heterojunction was anchored on dendritic fibrous nanosilica (DFNS) by the immobilization of Bi2O3 nanodots in DFNS and the subsequent reaction with HBr and then HI vapors at room temperature. The 4 nm-Bi2O3 nanodots acted as a sacrificial template to form BiOX nanosheets by reaction with HX vapors (X = Br, I). The BiOBr/BiOI nanosheet heterojunction with the lateral size remained in the range of 90 to 110 nm and a thickness of 15 nm formed on DFNS, where the BiOBr:BiOI ratio in the product was controlled by the exposure time to HX vapors. The reaction sequence (HBr → HI vapors) was a key for the formation of BiOBr/BiOI nanosheet heterojunction with controlled composition. When the reaction of Bi2O3 nanodots with HI vapor was performed in the reverse sequence (HI→ HBr), the substitution of I- with Br- occurred to form BiOBr sheets on DFNS. The BiOBr/BiOI nanosheet heterojunction anchored on DFNS was used as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst for the decomposition of benzene in water under solar light, and its activity was superior to that of single BiOX nanosheets on DFNS.

ClusterFinder: a fast tool to find cluster structures from pair distribution function data

A novel automated high-throughput screening approach, ClusterFinder, is reported for finding candidate structures for atomic pair distribution function (PDF) structural refinements. Finding starting models for PDF refinements is notoriously difficult when the PDF originates from nanoclusters or small nanoparticles. The reported ClusterFinder algorithm can screen 104 to 105 candidate structures from structural databases such as the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) in minutes, using the crystal structures as templates in which it looks for atomic clusters that result in a PDF similar to the target measured PDF. The algorithm returns a rank-ordered list of clusters for further assessment by the user. The algorithm has performed well for simulated and measured PDFs of metal-oxido clusters such as Keggin clusters. This is therefore a powerful approach to finding structural cluster candidates in a modelling campaign for PDFs of nanoparticles and nanoclusters.

Synthesis, Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity of Multiple Morphologies of Gold/Platinum Doped Bismuth Oxide Nanostructures

Bismuth oxides were synthesized from bismuth carbonate using the sol-gel method. Studies have described the formation of Bi2O3, as a precursor of HNO3 dissolution, and intermediate oxides, such as BixOy when using H2SO4 and H3PO4. The average size of the crystallite calculated from Scherrer's formula ranged from 9 to 19 nm, according to X-ray diffraction. The FTIR analysis showed the presence of specific Bi2O3 bands when using HNO3 and of crystalline phases of "bismuth oxide sulphate" when using H2SO4 and "bismuth phosphate" when using H3PO4. The TG curves showed major mass losses and specific thermal effects, delimited in four temperature zones for materials synthesized with HNO3 (with loss of mass between 24% and 50%) and H2SO4 (with loss of mass between 45% and 76%), and in three temperature zones for materials synthesized with H3PO4 (with loss of mass between 13% and 43%). Further, the thermal stability indicates that materials have been improved by the addition of a polymer or polymer and carbon. Confocal laser scanning microscopy showed decreased roughness in the series, [BixOy]N > [BixOy-6% PVA]N > [BixOy-C-6% PVA]N, and increased roughness for materials [BixOy]S, [BixOy-6% PVA]S, [BixOy-C-6% PVA]S, [BixOy]P, [BixOy-6% PVA]P and [BixOy-C-6% PVA]P. The morphological analysis (electronic scanning microscopy) of the synthesized materials showed a wide variety of forms: overlapping nanoplates ([BixOy]N or [BixOy]S), clusters of angular forms ([BixOy-6% PVA]N), pillars ([BixOy-6% PVA]S-Au), needle particles ([BixOy-Au], [BixOy-6% PVA]S-Au, [BixOy-C-6% PVA]S-Au), spherical particles ([BixOy-C-6% PVA]P-Pt), 2D plates ([BixOy]P-Pt) and 3D nanometric plates ([BixOy-C-6% PVA]S-Au). For materials obtained in the first synthesis stage, antimicrobial activity increased in the series [BixOy]N > [BixOy]S > [BixOy]P. For materials synthesized in the second synthesis stage, when polymer (polyvinyl alcohol, PVA) was added, maximum antimicrobial activity, regardless of the microbial species tested, was present in the material [BixOy-6% PVA]S. For the materials synthesized in the third stage, to which graphite and 6% PVA were added, the best antimicrobial activity was in the material [BixOy-C-6% PVA]P. Materials synthesized and doped with metal ions (gold or platinum) showed significant antimicrobial activity for the tested microbial species.

Water Defect Stabilizes the Bi3+ Lone-Pair Electronic State Leading to an Unusual Aqueous Hydration Structure

The aqueous hydration structure of the Bi³⁺ ion is probed using a combination of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) simulations of ion-water clusters and condensed-phase solutions. Anomalous features in the EXAFS spectra are found to be associated with a highly asymmetric first-solvent water shell. The aqueous chemistry and structure of the Bi³⁺ ion are dramatically controlled by the water stabilization of a lone-pair electronic state involving the mixed 6s and 6p orbitals. This leads to a distinct multimodal distribution of water molecules in the first shell that are separated by about 0.2 Å. The lone-pair structure is stabilized by a collective response of multiple waters that are localized near the lone-pair anti-bonding site. The findings indicate that the lone-pair stereochemistry of aqueous Bi³⁺ ions plays a major role in the binding of water and ligands in aqueous solutions.

Deposition of Nanosized Amino Acid Functionalized Bismuth Oxido Clusters on Gold Surfaces

Bismuth compounds are of growing interest with regard to potential applications in catalysis, medicine, and electronics, for which their environmentally benign nature is one of the key factors. One thing that currently hampers the further development of bismuth oxido-based materials, however, is the often low solubility of the precursors, which makes targeted immobilisation on substrates challenging. We present an approach towards the solubilisation of bismuth oxido clusters by introducing an amino carboxylate as a functional group. For this purpose, the bismuth oxido cluster [Bi38O45(NO3)20(dmso)28](NO3)4·4dmso (dmso = dimethyl sulfoxide) was reacted with the sodium salt of tert-butyloxycabonyl (Boc)-protected phenylalanine (L-Phe) to obtain the soluble and chiral nanocluster [Bi38O45(Boc–Phe–O)24(dmso)9]. The exchange of the nitrates by the amino carboxylates was proven by nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, as well as elemental analysis and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The solubility of the bismuth oxido cluster in a protic as well as an aprotic polar organic solvent and the growth mode of the clusters upon spin, dip, and drop coating on gold surfaces were studied by a variety of microscopy, as well as spectroscopic techniques. In all cases, the bismuth oxido clusters form crystalline agglomerations with size, height, and distribution on the substrate that can be controlled by the choice of the solvent and of the deposition method.

Polymorphism and Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalysis of Doped Bi2O3:M (M = S, Se, and Re)

δ-Bi₂O₃:M (M = S, Se, and Re) with an oxygen-defective fluorite-type structure is obtained by a coprecipitation method starting from the bismuth oxido cluster [Bi₃₈O₄₅(OMc)₂₄(dmso)₉]·2dmso·7H₂O (A) in the presence of additives such as Na₂SO₄, Na₂SeO₄, NH₄ReO₄, Na₂SeO₃·5H₂O, and Na₂SO₃. The coprecipitation of the starting materials with aqueous NaOH results in the formation of alkaline reaction mixtures, and the cubic bismuth(III)-based oxides Bi₁₄O₂₀(SO₄) (1c), Bi₁₄O₂₀(SeO₄) (2c), Bi₁₄O₂₀(ReO_4.5) (3c), Bi_12.25O_16.625(SeO₃)_1.75 (4c), and Bi_10.51O_14.765(SO₃)_0.49(SO₄)_0.51 (5c) are obtained after microwave-assisted heating; formation of compound 5c is the result of partial oxidation of sulfur. The compounds 1c, 2c, 4c, and 5c absorb UV light only, whereas compound 3c absorbs in the visible-light region of the solar spectrum. Thermal treatment of the as-prepared metastable bismuth(III) oxide chalcogenates 1c and 2c at T = 600 °C provides a monotropic phase transition into their tetragonal polymorphs Bi₁₄O₂₀(SO₄) (1t) and Bi₁₄O₂₀(SeO₄) (2t), while compound 3c is transformed into the tetragonal modification of Bi₁₄O₂₀(ReO_4.5) (3t) after calcination at T = 700 °C. Compounds of the systems Bi₂O₃-SO_x (x = 2 and 3) and Bi₂O₃-Re₂O₇ are thermally stable up to T = 800 °C, whereas compounds of the system Bi₂O₃-SeO₃ completely lose SeO₃. Thermal treatment of 4c and 5c in air results in the oxidation of the tetravalent to hexavalent sulfur and selenium, respectively, upon heating to T = 400-500 °C. The as-prepared cubic bismuth(III)-based oxides 1c-5c were studied with regard to the photocatalytic decomposition of rhodamine B under visible-light irradiation with compound 3c showing the highest turnover and efficiency.

From a Cerium-Doped Polynuclear Bismuth Oxido Cluster to β-Bi2O3:Ce

The simultaneous hydrolysis of Bi(NO₃)₃·5H₂O and Ce(NO₃)₃·6H₂O results in the formation of novel heterometallic bismuth oxido clusters with the general formula [Bi₃₈O₄₅(NO₃)₂₄(DMSO)_28+δ]:Ce (DMSO = dimethyl sulfoxide; cerium content <1.50%), which is demonstrated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The incorporation of cerium into the cluster core is a result of the interplay of hydrolysis and condensation of the metal nitrates in the presence of oxygen. Diffuse-reflectance UV-vis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveal the presence of Ce^IV in the final bismuth oxido clusters as a result of oxidation of the cerium source. The cerium atoms are statistically distributed mainly on the bismuth atom positions of the central [Bi₆O₉] motif of the [Bi₃₈O₄₅] cluster core. Hydrolysis and subsequent annealing of the bismuth oxido clusters in the temperature range of 300-400 °C provides β-Bi₂O₃:Ce samples with slightly lowered band gaps of approximately 2.3 eV compared to the undoped β-Bi₂O₃ (approximately 2.4 eV). The sintering behavior of β-Bi₂O₃ is significantly affected by the cerium dopant. Finally, differences in the efficiency of the as-prepared β-Bi₂O₃:Ce and undoped β-Bi₂O₃ samples in the photocatalytic decomposition of the biocide triclosan in an aqueous solution under visible-light irradiation are demonstrated.

Use of Microwave Radiation for Activating Carbon from Rice Husk Using ZnCl2 Activator

Activated carbon is one of the most commonly used adsorbents in a variety of separation processes because it is inexpensive, and also the design and principal of application are quite simple. The ability of activated carbon as an adsorbent is related to its large surface area and pore volume, varying pore structure, and diverse surface reactivity. The use of microwave radiation can further improve the efficiency of activated carbon adsorption. Micro-waves can affect the pore texture and surface of the activated carbon, but rarely do both practitioners and researchers control these variables influencing the relationship between features and performance of biomass-based activated carbon as an adsorbent at the time of manufacture from the initial stage (carbonation) to carbon application active (e.g., adsorption of heavy metals, surfactants, and organic molecules). This study aims to synthesize activated carbon from rice husk, which has the efficiency and capacity of adsorption of heavy metals such as Pb and activator organic molecules used is ZnCl2 30% and microwave radiation. This research has succeeded in making activated carbon using the ZnCl2 activator and microwave radiation. The time and power of microwave radiation that provides the highest efficiency in the carbon activation process for Pb ion adsorbate, were 7 minutes and 800 W. For phenol adsorbate was 5 minutes at 800 W. The highest efficiency time and concentration of adsorption for Pb ion adsorbate were 40 minutes at 60 ppm while for phenol adsorbate were 5 hours at 100 ppm. The adsorption efficiency for Pb cation adsorbate was 99.57%. While for phenol adsorbate is 81.05%. Characterization with FTIR, SEM-EDX, and SAA showed a C-Cl bond, the pores were visible, and an increased surface area of activated carbon was 36.9 times the surface area of carbon and the pores formed were mesoporous.
