Research Progress of Tamarixetin and its Glycosides

Tamarixetin and its glycosides are widely distributed in natural plants, and they are also natural flavonoid derivatives of quercetin. Its main pharmacological effects include antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antiviral, anticancer, cardiovascular effects, etc. The pharmacokinetics showed that the distribution of direct absorption differed from that of biosynthesis. At the same time, research shows that tamarixetin is safe to use because it has little self-toxicity. In this paper, 181 articles on tamarixetin published from 1976 to 2023 are obtained from PubMed, China Knowledge Base Database, Wanfang Data, and other electronic databases. Tamarixetin is searched based on keywords, and 121 articles remain. Transformation synthesis, pharmacokinetics, pharmacological action, and structureactivity relationship of tamarixetin were reviewed.

A comprehensive review of the health benefits of flaxseed oil in relation to its chemical composition and comparison with other omega-3-rich oils

Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L) is an ancient perennial plant species regarded as a multipurpose plant owing to its richness in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) including α-linolenic acid (ALA). The extensive biochemical analysis of flaxseed resulted in the identification of its bioactive, i.e., lignans with potential application in the improvement of human health. Flaxseed oil, fibers, and lignans exert potential health benefits including reduction of cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, and autoimmune and neurological disorders that have led to the diversification of flaxseed plant applications. This comprehensive review focuses on flaxseed oil as the major product of flaxseed with emphasis on the interrelationship between its chemical composition and biological effects. Effects reviewed include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, antiulcer, anti-osteoporotic, cardioprotective, metabolic, and neuroprotective. This study provides an overview of flaxseed oil effects with the reported action mechanisms related to its phytochemical composition and in comparison, to other PUFA-rich oils. This study presents the most updated and comprehensive review summarizing flaxseed oil's health benefits for the treatment of various diseases.

Role of Marine Bacterial Contaminants in Histamine Formation in Seafood Products: A Review

Histamine is a toxic biogenic amine commonly found in seafood products or their derivatives. This metabolite is produced by histamine-producing bacteria (HPB) such as Proteus vulgaris, P. mirabilis, Enterobacter aerogenes, E. cloacae, Serratia fonticola, S. liquefaciens, Citrobacter freundii, C. braakii, Clostridium spp., Raoultella planticola, R. ornithinolytica, Vibrio alginolyticus, V. parahaemolyticus, V. olivaceus, Acinetobacter lowffi, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Pseudomonas putida, P. fluorescens, Aeromonas spp., Photobacterium damselae, P. phosphoreum, P. leiognathi, P. iliopiscarium, P. kishitanii, and P. aquimaris. In this review, the role of these bacteria in histamine production in fish and seafood products with consequences for human food poisoning following consumption are discussed. In addition, methods to control their activity in countering histamine production are proposed.

Antioxidative and α-glucosidase inhibitory constituents of Polyscias guilfoylei: experimental and computational assessments

Searching for bioactive agents from medicinal plants, eleven constituents were isolated from Polyscias guilfoylei stem for the first time, including a nucleoside uracil (1), two sterols β-sitosterol (2) and daucosterol (3), a saponin androseptoside A (4), two lignans (+)-pinoresinol (5) and (+)-syringaresinol (6), four phenolic acids protocatechuic acid (7), methyl protocatechuate (8), caffeic acid (9), and 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (10), and a flavonoid quercitrin (11). Metabolites 1, 4, and 6-11 have never been observed in genus Polyscias before. Phenolic compounds 7 and 9 possessed the respective IC₅₀ values of 21.33 and 13.88 µg/mL in DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) antioxidative assay, as compared with that of the positive control resveratrol (IC₅₀ = 13.21 µg/mL). From density functional theory (DFT) calculated approach, the DPPH free radical scavenging capacity of two compounds 7 and 9 can be explained by the role of OH groups at carbons C-3 and C-4. Antioxidative actions of these two potential agents are followed HAT (H atom transfer) mechanism by OH bond disruption in gas, but SPLET (sequential proton loss electron transfer) mechanism in solvents water and methanol. Compared to 4-OH group, 3-OH group showed better bond disruption enthalpies and better kinetic energies since it reacted with HOO^• and DPPH radicals. Sterols 2-3 and flavonoid 11 induced the IC₅₀ values of < 2.0 µg/mL better than the positive control acarbose (IC₅₀ = 184.0 µg/mL) in α-glucosidase inhibitory assay. Their interactions with human intestinal C- and N-terminal domains of α-glucosidase were explored using molecular docking study. The obtained results proved that compounds 2, 3, and 11 bind relatively stronger with the C-terminal domain than to the N-terminal domain through pivotal residues in the binding site and could be hypothesized as mixed inhibitors.
