Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a resistance exercise program in the bedridden older adults in China. METHODS The patients aged 80 years and above with stable diseases were randomly divided into control group (receiving routine treatment and nursing) and training group (receiving the elastic ball and elastic band training applied for 55 minutes, 3 times a week during 6 months). RESULTS A total of 59 patients (control group: 30; training groups: 29) completed the study. In terms of muscle strength, the patients of the training group had better grip strength and supine leg lifts and 30-s sit-to-stand actions. In terms of cardiopulmonary function and glycolipid metabolism, the patients in the training groups had better lung capacity and high-density lipoprotein. CONCLUSION The low-load and low-intensity resistance training may effectively improve not only the muscle strength of the bedridden older adults, but also the lung function and blood lipid metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies suggest that longer durations of T2DM increase the risk of T2DM complications and premature mortality. However, whether T2DM duration impacts the efficacy of an aerobic exercise intervention is unclear. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was: 1) to compare changes in body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, and glycemia between individuals with short- and long-duration T2DM after aerobic exercise and 2) to determine whether these changes were associated with changes in glycemia by T2DM duration. METHODS A secondary analysis of the INTENSITY study (NCT03787836), including thirty-four adults (≥19 years) with T2DM who participated in 28 weeks of aerobic exercise training for 150 minutes per week at a moderate-to-vigorous intensity (4.5 to 6.0 metabolic equivalents (METs)). Using pre-established cut-points, participants were categorized into two groups 1) short-duration T2DM (<5 years) or 2) long-duration T2DM (≥5 years). Glycemia was measured by glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), body composition by BodPod, and cardiorespiratory fitness by a measure of peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak). All measurements were performed at baseline, 16 weeks, and 28 weeks. RESULTS Participants in the short-duration T2DM group experienced decreases in fat mass (kg) (p = 0.03), HbA1c (p = 0.05), and an increased relative VO2peak (p = 0.01). Those with long-duration T2DM experienced decreases in fat mass (kg) (p = 0.02) and HbA1c (p <0.001) and increased fat-free mass (p = 0.02). No significant differences were observed between groups in any outcomes. Changes in fat mass (r = 0.54, p = 0.02), and body fat percentage (r = 0.50, p = 0.02) were significantly associated with the change in HbA1c in those with a long-duration T2DM only. CONCLUSION Our results suggest T2DM duration did not differently impact the efficacy of a 28-week aerobic exercise intervention. However, changes in body composition were associated with better glycemia in individuals with longer T2DM duration only.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the combination of elastic band resistance exercise (EBRE) with modified Thai yoga on the alleviation of blood glucose and oxidative stress in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Forty-two patients with T2DM were enrolled and allocated to an exercise or control group (n=21/group). The exercise group participated in EBRE combination with modified Thai yoga for 40 min, 5 days/wk, for 12 consecutive weeks. Blood glucose, oxidative stress markers, antioxidants, pulmonary function, respiratory muscle strength, and airway inflammation were measured before and after the 12 weeks. The results showed that the exercise group had a significant reduction in fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin. Moreover, T2DM patients in the exercise group showed a significant reduction in plasma malondialdehyde, while superoxide dismutase and catalase were significantly increased. The exercise group also observed a significant improvement in pulmonary function; forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV1/FVC, peak expiratory flow, and forced midexpiratory flow as well as respiratory muscle strength. Interestingly, the combination of EBRE with modified Thai yoga markedly improved airway inflammation through the reduction in fractional exhaled nitric oxide. In conclusion, these findings suggest that the combination of EBRE with modified Thai yoga improves blood glucose, oxidative stress, antioxidants, pulmonary function, respiratory muscle strength, and airway inflammation in T2DM patients. Hence, it could be considered as a possible exercise program for T2DM patients.

Abstract
Research has proven that aerobic exercise improves glucose homeostasis among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Elastic resistance (tube or band) is suggested as a good alternative for home-based strength training among older adults including those with T2DM due to its low cost, simplicity, portability, and versatility. This study aimed to measure the effects of 16-week home-based progressive resistance training (PRT), using a resistance tube on glucose homeostasis and cardiovascular risk factors among older adults with T2DM. A total of 70 participants aged 61.68 (5.50) years with T2DM were assigned to the intervention (n = 35) and control (n = 35) groups in this quasi-experimental trial. The intervention group underwent 16 weeks of home-based PRT using a resistance tube. Significant improvements in HbA1c (-1.34% point, p < 0.001), fasting blood glucose (-1.30 mmol/L, p < 0.001), and systolic blood pressure (-1.42 mmHg, p < 0.05) were observed after 16 weeks of intervention. However, no significant changes were observed in lipid profile, diastolic blood pressure, resting heart rate, and ankle-brachial index. The finding suggests that 16 weeks of home-based PRT using a resistance tube has the potential to improve glycemic control and reduce systolic blood pressure among older adults with T2DM and caused no adverse events.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Resistance training (RT) is an effective intervention for glycemic control and cardiometabolic health in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, the use of RT in individuals at risk for T2D to prevent or delay the onset of T2D, and RT program characteristics that are most effective are still unknown. The purpose of this review is to determine the effects of RT on cardiometabolic risk factors in those at risk for T2D and to examine RT program characteristics associated with intervention effectiveness. METHODS PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, and Embase databases were systematically searched for published controlled trials that compared cardiometabolic outcomes in adults with cardiometabolic risk for those that underwent an RT intervention with those that did not. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to determine the effect of RT on glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), body fat percentage (BF%), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides (TG). Additional analyses examined effects of intervention duration and dietary intervention on FPG and TG. RESULTS Fourteen trials with 668 participants were included. For RT compared to controls, the standardized mean difference (SMD) was -1.064 for HbA1c (95% confidence interval [CI] -1.802 to -0.327; p=0.005), -0.99 for FPG (95% CI -1.798 to -0.183; p=0.016), -0.933 for TC (95% CI -1.66 to -0.206; p=0.012), -0.840 for BF% (95% CI -1.429 to -0.251; p=0.005), -0.693 for HDL (95% CI -1.230 to -0.156; p=0.011), -1.03 for LDL (95% CI -2.03 to -0.050; p=0.039), and -0.705 for TG (95% CI -1.132 to -0.279; p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS RT is beneficial for improving glycemic control, BF%, and blood lipids in those at risk for diabetes. The addition of a dietary component did not result in larger reductions in FPG and TG than RT alone. PROSPERO REGISTRATION ID CRD42019122217.

Abstract
Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are responsible for 60% of global deaths. Of these NCD-attributable deaths, about 80% are in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs). The role of exercise in major NCDs is evident; however, popular and cost-effective aerobic modes of exercise, such as walking, consistently do not meet minimum intensity guidelines for health improvement. Interestingly, low-cost resistance training (using callisthenics, Pilates, elastic tubing, etc.) has proven equally effective to conventional resistance training using weight machines in improving several health parameters related to NCDs, although their effectiveness in LMICs is not as well documented as in high-income countries (HICs). Objectives: This review aimed to examine low-cost approaches of resistance training to health promotion, NCD risk reduction, and NCD rehabilitation/management to mitigate the epidemic of NCDs in lower-resource settings. Methods: An electronic search was performed on the following databases from inception until December 2019: PubMed/Medline, Sport Discuss, Embase, Science Direct, Current Contents, CISTI Source, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, CINAHL EBM Reviews, and international e-catalogues. Results: Data on resistance training provision cost in low-resource settings indicates that it is not reasonable to use this mode of training in low-resource settings in the same way as it is used in high-resource ones. This review summarized some strategies which can be employed to ensure the delivery of all core resistance training components in low-resource settings. The data suggests that resistance training be adapted for delivery in non-clinical settings in LMICs. Conclusions: Program design variables of resistance training are similar in low- and well-resourced settings. However, only individuals with low-risk will be able to perform exercise without adverse consequences in home-based settings. Health care practitioners in LMICs should take an active role in promoting resistance training when promoting health, reducing NCD risk, and NCD rehabilitation.

J Strength Cond Res 33(4): 1146-1155, 2019-We examined the effects of an 8-W circuit resistance training (RES) program using elastic bands and body weight on TCD4+ cell counts and anthropometry in patients with HIV. Patients (N = 21) receiving antiretroviral therapy were randomly assigned to resistance training (RES; n = 14) or control (CON; n = 7) groups. RES (3/W) consisted of training with elastic bands and bodyweight training focusing on major muscle groups. CON received standard care. Statistical analyses were performed using general linear models adjusted for age, sex, length of infection, and respective baseline measures. The primary outcome was TCD4+, and secondary outcomes were anthropometry indices. Tertiary assessments explored Pearson correlations surrounding the relationship between changes in anthropometry and TCD4+. We observed significant increases in TCD4+ count accompanying RES training (105.50 cells·mm, 95% confidence interval [CI], 47.42-163.59), whereas CON significantly decreased (-41.01 cells·mm, 95% CI, -126.78 to 44.76). Significant between-group differences were noted (p < 0.02; n = 0.42). We also observed significant reductions in fat mass for RES (1.18 kg, 95% CI = 1.80 to -0.56) vs. increased fat mass for CON (1.21 kg, 95% CI, 0.31 to 2.11). Significant between-group differences were noted (p = 0.001, n = 0.64). Similar effects were noted for lean body mass. No significant changes were observed for body mass. Significant correlations were observed for fat mass (r = -0.699, p = 0.001) and lean mass (r = 0.553, p = 0.017), but not body mass (r = -0.390, p = 0.109) vs. changes in TCD4+. Our results suggest that the RES program used in this study is effective for improving TCD4+ status and body composition in patients with HIV.
