Measuring Exposure to the Hazardous Drinking of Others and Perceived Opportunity to Intervene as a Bystander

OBJECTIVE

Excessive alcohol use is very prevalent among young adults, and consequences of drinking are often observed by witnesses. Understanding the circumstances under which witnesses of risky alcohol use help others and whether they perceive these circumstances as an opportunity to engage in bystander intervention are important, but valid measures of these constructs are needed. The current study is a psychometric evaluation of the Exposure to Hazardous Drinking in Others (EHDO) scale and a single-item indicator of Perceived Alcohol-Related Bystander Opportunity (PARBO).

METHOD

Young adults (N = 1,011; 46.0% women) who reported being around someone who showed signs of alcohol intoxication in the past 3 months were recruited via Qualtrics Panels. The initial item set for the EHDO was developed through qualitative methods and reflected observed or reported risks or consequences. Factor analyses and Item Response Theory analyses were used to reduce and categorize EHDO items, and construct validity was assessed for the EHDO and the PARBO item.

RESULTS

An initial set of 33 EHDO items was reduced to 21, representing two factors: Situational Risk Signs and Problematic Pattern. Both factors demonstrated good model fit, internal consistency, and evidence of convergent validity. The PARBO item showed good construct validity but was distinct from the EHDO.

CONCLUSIONS

These instruments are useful for measuring secondhand alcohol risks in a community and are particularly applicable for evaluating bystander intervention for alcohol risk.

Risk and protective factors of social networks on alcohol, cannabis, and opioid use among urban American Indian/Alaska Native emerging adults

OBJECTIVES

Assess associations between social networks and urban American Indian/Alaska Native emerging adults' alcohol, cannabis, and opioid use and intentions.

METHOD

American Indian/Alaska Native participants ages 18-25 (N = 150; 86% female) were recruited across the United States from 12/20 to 10/21 via social media. Participants named up to 15 people whom they talked with most over the past 3 months and reported who (a) used alcohol and cannabis heavily or used other drugs (e.g., opioid use), (b) engaged in traditional practices, and (c) provided support. They also reported past 3-month alcohol, cannabis, and opioid use and intentions to use.

RESULTS

Having a higher proportion of network members engaging in regular cannabis and heavy alcohol use (but not other drugs) was associated with more frequent cannabis use and stronger cannabis use intentions. Participants with higher proportions of members engaging in heavy alcohol use, regular cannabis use, or other drug use and who did not engage in traditional practices were more likely to report cannabis use and greater intentions to use cannabis and drink alcohol. In contrast, participants with higher proportions of network members engaging in traditional practices and who did not report heavy alcohol use, regular cannabis use, or other drug use were less likely to report intentions to use cannabis or drink alcohol.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings emphasize what many studies have shown among various racial/ethnic groups-having network members who use substances increases the chance of use. Findings also highlight that traditional practices may be an important part of the prevention approach for this population. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved).

Self-management with alcohol over lifespan: psychological mechanisms, neurobiological underpinnings, and risk assessment

Self-management includes all behavioural measures and cognitive activities aimed at coping with challenges arising throughout the lifespan. While virtually all of these challenges can be met without pharmacological means, alcohol consumption has long been instrumentalized as a supporting tool to help coping with problems arising selectively at adolescence, adulthood, and ageing. Here, we present, to our knowledge, the first systematic review of alcohol instrumentalization throughout lifespan. We searched MEDLINE, Google Scholar, PsycINFO and CINAHL (from Jan, 1990, to Dec, 2022) and analysed consumption patterns, goals and potential neurobiological mechanisms. Evidence shows a regular non-addictive use of alcohol to self-manage developmental issues during adolescence, adulthood, and ageing. Alcohol is selectively used to overcome problems arising from dysfunctional personality traits, which manifest in adolescence. A large range of psychiatric disorders gives rise to alcohol use for the self-management of distinct symptoms starting mainly in adulthood. We identify those neuropharmacological effects of alcohol that selectively serve self-management under specific conditions. Finally, we discuss the adverse effects and associated risks that arise from the use of alcohol for self-management. Even well-controlled alcohol use adversely impacts health. Based on these findings, we suggest the implementation of an entirely new view. Health policy action may actively embrace both sides of the phenomenon through a personalized informed use that allows for harm-controlled self-management with alcohol.

Using social network methodology to examine the effects of exposure to alcohol-related social media content on alcohol use: A critical review

Peer social influence is a robust predictor of problematic drinking among young adults and adolescents; it is typically assessed by collecting nonspecific social network information (i.e., behaviors of peers globally) or specific social network information (i.e., behaviors of named friends). Socialization happens both in-person and online through social media. Exposure to alcohol-related social media content is consistently related to alcohol consumption in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies alike. Previous research has often not focused on who specifically is sharing the alcohol-related social media content with most examining effects of exposure to content posted by nonspecific network members (e.g., peers, friends) and individual alcohol consumption. The purpose of the current critical review is to describe how exposure to alcohol-related social media content is commonly measured and how including a specific social network assessment may explain more variance in alcohol use. The review found inconsistencies in the reference groups used when assessing frequency of exposure and found that specific modalities of content exposure were often not assessed. Of the 30 published studies reviewed, 15 used cross-sectional designs, which is regrettable considering that the composition of adolescent and young adult peer groups have been found to change over time possibly affecting the content viewed. Understanding factors which affect the relationship between exposure to alcohol-related social media content and individual alcohol use has implications for tailoring drinking interventions to address the unique social influence of social media content. Social Network Drinking Feedback is Associated with Use of Protective Behavioral Strategies and Drinking-Related Outcomes in Emerging Adult Risky Drinkers

OBJECTIVE

Although emerging adult risky drinkers are generally unmotivated to change their drinking, use of protective behavioral strategies (PBS) to minimize drinking risks is associated with decreased alcohol-related harms. However, research on social influences on PBS use and associations with drinking outcomes is limited and relevant to informing interventions for this priority population. This study investigated whether emerging adults' drinking-related behaviors were associated with social network encouragement, discouragement, or mixed messages about their drinking and with PBS use.

METHOD

Risky drinkers ages 21-29 years (N = 356; 228 women; mean age = 23.6 years) were recruited from the community using digitally implemented respondent-driven sampling. A web-based survey assessed social network drinking feedback, PBS use, drinking practices and problems, and behavioral allocation of time and money to drinking.

RESULTS

Negative binomial generalized linear models indicated that friend and spouse/ partner discouragement of drinking was associated with greater PBS use, whereas mixed messages were associated with lower use (ps < .05). Greater PBS use was associated with fewer alcohol-related negative consequences and lower behavioral allocation to drinking (ps < .05); the latter association was most consistent for serious harm reduction PBS (e.g., use of a designated driver). Mixed drinking messages from all relationship types had direct negative associations with drinking outcomes, particularly time and money allocated to drinking.

CONCLUSIONS

Assessing social network features may guide interventions to increase PBS use and reduce drinking-related harms among emerging adult risky drinkers.

Defining Belonging and Its Association to Binge Drinking among College Students

Objective: This study investigated the relationship between the students' combined belonging and binge drinking. Combined belonging was defined as a combination of both subjective (perceived belonging) and objective (participation in school activities) measures of belonging. Participants: The sample included 33,360 college students enrolled in U.S. States collegiate institutions. Methods: Data were obtained from an online survey through the Healthy Minds Study from 2018 to 2019. Logistic regression models estimated odds ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals. Results: Overall, 39.3% of students met criteria for binge drinking. Combined belonging had the highest odds of binge drinking compared to their counterparts. Being 21 and 22 years of age was the strongest risk factor for binge drinking. Conclusions: Interventions should be tailored to include objective and subjective measures of belonging to effectively reduce college binge drinking.
