Abstract
Background and Objectives: The thyroid is a key endocrine gland for the regulation of metabolic processes. A body composition analysis (BCA) is a valuable complement to the assessment of body mass index, which is derived only from body weight and height. This cross-sectional retrospective study aimed to investigate the relationships between thyroid volume (TV) and thyroid function parameters, anthropometric measurements, BCA parameters, and the presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adults without clinically overt thyroid disease. Material and Methods: This study involved 45 people (females: 57.8%; MetS: 28.9%) hospitalized for planned diagnostics without signs of acute illness or a deterioration of their health and without thyroid disease, who underwent thyroid ultrasound scans, biochemical tests to assess their thyroid function, MetS assessments, anthropometric measurements, and BCAs using the bioelectrical impedance method. Results: The TV was significantly larger in people with MetS compared to people without MetS. The TV was significantly higher and the serum thyrotropin (TSH) concentration was significantly lower in overweight and obese people than in normal and underweight people. The free triiodothyronine (FT3) serum concentration and TV were correlated with waist circumference and some parameters of the BCA, and the FT3 concentration was also correlated with the body mass index, waist-hip ratio, and waist-height ratio. No significant correlations were found between the FT4 and TSH and the results of the anthropometric and BCA measurements. Conclusions: Even in a population of euthyroid patients without clinically overt thyroid disease, there were some significant relationships between the volume and function of the thyroid gland and the results of their anthropometric parameters, BCAs, and the presence of MetS features.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purposes of this study were to assess the changes in body composition in patients who underwent thyroidectomy due to differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) after radioactive iodine therapy (RAI) and short-term levothyroxine (LT4) supplementation and to explore the correlations between body composition distribution and corresponding blood indices. METHODS Fifty-seven thyroidectomized DTC patients were included. Serum was tested for several biochemical indices of thyroid function, lipids, and bone metabolism, and body composition parameters were measured via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry before and 4-6 weeks after RAI and LT4 supplementation. RESULTS The body composition of DTC patients changed after RAI. Fat mass in all parts of the body decreased (range of relative change (RRC) -12.97--2.80%). Bone mineral content (BMC) increased throughout the body (relative change (RC) 12.12%), head (RC 36.23%), pelvis (RC 9.00%), and legs (RC 3.15%). Similarly, bone mineral density (BMD) increased in different regions (RRC 3.60-26.43%), except for the arms. Notably, lean mass in the arms (RC 4.30%) and legs (RC 3.67%) increased, while that in the head decreased (RC -2.75%), while total lean mass did not change at 4-6 weeks after LT4 supplementation. Furthermore, changes in fat distribution in the android region were related to the changes in total cholesterol (r = -0.390) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = -0.354), and changes in the BMC and BMD of the lumbar spine were positively associated with the changes in calcitonin (r = 0.302 and 0.325, respectively). CONCLUSIONS After RAI and short-term LT4 supplementation in DTC patients, body composition rapidly and positively changed and was characterized by decreased fat mass and increased BMC and BMD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Graves' orbitopathy (GO) is an autoimmune disorder of the orbit and retro-ocular tissues and the primary extrathyroidal manifestation of Graves' disease. In moderate-to-severe and active GO iv glucocorticoids (GCs) are recommended as first-line treatment. The aim was to assess the safety profile of methylprednisolone administered intravenously for three consecutive days at 1 g in patients with active, moderate-to-severe or sight-threatening Graves' orbitopathy. METHODS We retrospectively evaluated 161 medical records of patients with GO treated with high-dose systemic GCs in the Department of Endocrinology, Metabolic Disorders, and Internal Medicine in Poznań between 2014 and 2021. Clinical data included age, gender, laboratory results, activity and severity of GO, smoking status, disease duration, and presented side effects. RESULTS The presence of mild side effects was observed during 114 (71%) hospitalizations. The most common complications were hyperglycemia (n = 95) and elevated aminotransferases (n = 31). Increased levels of aminotransferases were more likely observed in smokers and GO duration above 12 months. Based on the multivariate logistic regression, higher TRAb and CAS values were significantly associated with lower odds of hyperglycemia. In turn, the increased odds of elevated aminotransferases were significantly correlated with higher initial ALT levels, female gender, and GO duration above 12 months. In addition, the multidimensional correspondence analysis (MPA) showed that GO patients who declared smoking and had not L-ornithine L-aspartate applied demonstrated a higher probability of elevated aminotransferases. CONCLUSIONS Active GO treatment with high-dose systemic GCs is not associated with serious side effects. Hyperglycemia is the most common steroid-induced complication.

Abstract
Background Weight gain post-radioiodine (RAI) treatment is observed in patients with hyperthyroid Graves’ disease. Previous studies, mostly in Caucasian patients, demonstrated excessive weight gain averaging 5–7 kg from initial presentation. Aim The aim of this study was to determine the extent and risk factors of weight gain in Thai patients with RAI-treated Graves’ disease. Methods This was a 5-year retrospective study of patients with hyperthyroid Graves’ disease who received RAI treatment during 2016–2020. The proportion and associated risk factors of weight gain ≥5% in patients who was followed for at least 3 months when compared with weight at RAI administration were analyzed. Results There were 347 patients with Graves’ disease (females 81.0%, mean age 38.8 ± 12.1 years, BMI 23.3 ± 4.0 kg/m2) who were treated with RAI. Almost all RAI-treated patients (91.9%) eventually developed hypothyroidism. During the median follow-up period of 25 months, 73.1% of them had weight gain. The mean weight change was +2.5 ± 4.9 kgs when compared with weight at the time RAI administration and +3.4 ± 6.5 kgs when compared with recalled body weight before the onset of hyperthyroidism. The proportion of patient in the obesity class I (BMI 25.0–29.9 kg/m2) increased from 23.6% to 28.0% and obesity class II (BMI ≥30.0 kg/m2) increased from 5.2% to 8.9%. Duration of antithyroid drug treatment less than 6 months after the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism was the only factor associated with weight gain ≥5%. Conclusions Weight gain post-RAI treatment was common, and a significant proportion of patients went on to develop obesity. Early intervention with weight management support should be employed in patients with less than 6 months of antithyroid drug treatment before RAI.

Abstract
Nowadays obesity becomes a significant global problem. Hence, recently more and more attention has been paid to substances present in the body that have a significant impact on metabolic processes and thermogenesis, in the context of their potential use in the prevention and treatment of obesity. It is well known that the relationship between thyroid hormones and obesity is multilayered, however recently, more and more information about the possible relation between thyroid hormones and muscle metabolism has been published. The aim of this review is to present the most updated information on the physiological impact of thyroid hormones on muscle tissue, as well as pathological changes related to the occurrence of various types of thyroid disorders, including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and sick euthyroid syndrome. However, the data in humans still remains insufficient, and further studies are needed to fully explore the thyroid-muscle cross-talk.

Abstract
Signalling between the tissues integrating synthesis, transformation and utilization of energy substrates and their regulatory hormonal axes play a substantial role in the development of metabolic disorders. Interactions between cytokines, particularly liver derived hepatokines and adipokines, secreted from adipose tissue, constitute one of major areas of current research devoted to metabolic dysregulation. The thyroid exerts crucial influence on the maintenance of basal metabolic rate, thermogenesis, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, while its dysfunction promotes the development of metabolic disorders. In this review, we discuss the interplay between three adipokines: fatty acid binding protein type 4, fetuin-A, retinol binding protein type 4 and thyroid hormones, that shed a new light onto mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis, cardiovascular complications, obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes accompanying thyroid dysfunction. Furthermore, we summarize clinical findings on those cytokines in the course of thyroid disorders.

Abstract
PURPOSE The role of nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT)/visfatin in a more aggressive course of many malignancies has been proven. Previous studies have noticed the importance of visfatin in thyroid neoplastic tissue, but the diagnostic and prognostic value of its serum concentration has not been investigated so far. Our study aimed to consider whether extracellular NAMPT (eNAMPT) could be a potential serum marker in recurrent papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). METHODS It was a prospective observational study with consecutive enrolment. We recruited 100 patients with PTC after thyroidectomy with postoperative 131I ablation and 100 healthy controls. Also, 50 randomly selected patients underwent laboratory assessment (including eNAMPT serum concentration by ELISA Assay Kit, TSH, free thyroid hormones, TSH-stimulated thyroglobulin Tg, antibodies - TgAbs, TPOAb) and body composition analysis twice: at admission and 6 months after being on suppressive levothyroxine doses. TSH-stimulated Tg of 1 ng/ml was defined as the cutoff value for predicting disease status as complete remission (n = 55) and recurrent or persistent structural disease (n = 45). RESULTS The visfatin serum concentrations in patients diagnosed with PTC and in healthy subjects were not statistically significantly different (p = 0.9425). The eNAMPT levels were also similar in disease-free patients and the ones with tumour relapse. Besides, ROC curve analysis did not detect eNAMPT as a biomarker of PTC. CONCLUSION We have not found visfatin as a potential serum marker of papillary thyroid cancer. Also, eNAMPT has no prognostic value in assessing the risk of disease recurrence or metastasis in PTC management.
