[Predictions of a SEIR model for COVID-19 cases in Cali-Colombia]

Integrating socio-psychological factors in the SEIR model optimized by a genetic algorithm for COVID-19 trend analysis

The global spread of COVID-19 has profoundly affected health and economies, highlighting the need for precise epidemic trend predictions for effective interventions. In this study, we used infectious disease models to simulate and predict the trajectory of COVID-19. An SEIR (susceptible, exposed, infected, removed) model was established using Wuhan data to reflect the pandemic. We then trained a genetic algorithm-based SEIR (GA-SEIR) model using data from a specific U.S. region and focused on individual susceptibility and infection dynamics. By integrating socio-psychological factors, we achieved a significant enhancement to the GA-SEIR model, leading to the development of an optimized version. This refined GA-SEIR model significantly improved our ability to simulate the spread and control of the epidemic and to effectively track trends. Remarkably, it successfully predicted the resurgence of COVID-19 in mainland China in April 2023, demonstrating its robustness and reliability. The refined GA-SEIR model provides crucial insights for public health authorities, enabling them to design and implement proactive strategies for outbreak containment and mitigation. Its substantial contributions to epidemic modelling and public health planning are invaluable, particularly in managing and controlling respiratory infectious diseases such as COVID-19.

[Mathematical models for COVID-19 infection estimation: essential considerations and projections in Colombia]

OBJECTIVE

To estimate the COVID-19 infection behavior in Colombia using mathematical models.

METHODS

Two mathematical models were constructed to estimate imported confirmed cases and related confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection in Colombia, respectively. The phenomenology of imported confirmed cases is modeled with sigmoidal function, while related confirmed cases are modeled using a combination of exponential functions and polynomial algebraic functions. The fitting algorithms based on least squares methods and direct search methods are used to determine the parameters of the models.

RESULTS

The sigmodial model performs a highly convergent estimation of the reported confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection to May 28, 2020. This model achieved a prediction error of 0.5 % measured using the normalized root mean square error. The model of the confirmed cases reported as related shows a 3.5 % prediction error and a low bias of -0.01 associated with overestimation.

CONCLUSIONS

This work shows that the mathematical models allow to predict the behavior of the infection efficiently and effectively by COVID 19 in Colombia when the imported cases and the related cases of infection are independently considered.

The State of the Art of Data Mining Algorithms for Predicting the COVID-19 Pandemic

Current computer systems are accumulating huge amounts of information in several application domains. The outbreak of COVID-19 has increased rekindled interest in the use of data mining techniques for the analysis of factors that are related to the emergence of an epidemic. Data mining techniques are being used in the analysis and interpretation of information, which helps in the discovery of patterns, planning of isolation policies, and even predicting the speed of proliferation of contagion in a viral disease such as COVID-19. This research provides a comprehensive study of various data mining algorithms that are used in conjunction with epidemiological prediction models. The document considers that there is an opportunity to improve or develop tools that offer an accurate prognosis in the management of viral diseases through the use of data mining tools, based on a comparative study of 35 research papers.

Regional Resource Assessment During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Italy: Modeling Study

BACKGROUND

COVID-19 has been declared a worldwide emergency and a pandemic by the World Health Organization. It started in China in December 2019, and it rapidly spread throughout Italy, which was the most affected country after China. The pandemic affected all countries with similarly negative effects on the population and health care structures.

OBJECTIVE

The evolution of the COVID-19 infections and the way such a phenomenon can be characterized in terms of resources and planning has to be considered. One of the most critical resources has been intensive care units (ICUs) with respect to the infection trend and critical hospitalization.

METHODS

We propose a model to estimate the needed number of places in ICUs during the most acute phase of the infection. We also define a scalable geographic model to plan emergency and future management of patients with COVID-19 by planning their reallocation in health structures of other regions.

RESULTS

We applied and assessed the prediction method both at the national and regional levels. ICU bed prediction was tested with respect to real data provided by the Italian government. We showed that our model is able to predict, with a reliable error in terms of resource complexity, estimation parameters used in health care structures. In addition, the proposed method is scalable at different geographic levels. This is relevant for pandemics such as COVID-19, which has shown different case incidences even among northern and southern Italian regions.

CONCLUSIONS

Our contribution can be useful for decision makers to plan resources to guarantee patient management, but it can also be considered as a reference model for potential upcoming waves of COVID-19 and similar emergency situations.
