Abstract
BACKGROUND Later stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with poorer self-perceived health-related quality of life (HRQOL), a major consideration for many patients. Psychological factors such as depression and anxiety have been linked with poorer HRQOL. We aimed to determine if anxiety or depressive symptoms are significantly associated with self-perceived health-related quality of life, in patients with CKD Stage 5. The secondary aim was to determine which patient-associated factors are associated with HRQOL in patients with CKD Stage 5. METHODS This retrospective cross-sectional study included patients that attended the St George Hospital Kidney Supportive Care (KSC) clinic between 1 and 2015 and 30 June 2022 with CKD Stage 5 (either conservatively-managed or receiving dialysis). Patients completed surveys of their functional 'domains' and quality of life (EQ-5D-5L) and symptom surveys (IPOS-Renal) at their first visit. We performed multivariable linear regression analysis with the outcome of interest being HRQOL, measured using the EQ-VAS, a continuous 100-point scale, for patients undergoing conservative management or dialysis. Pre-specified variables included age, sex, eGFR (for those conservatively-managed), "feeling depressed" (IPOS-Renal), "feeling anxious" (IPOS-Renal) and "anxiety/depression" (EQ-5D-5L). RESULTS We included 339 patients. 216 patients received conservative kidney management (CKM) and 123 patients received dialysis. Patients receiving CKM were significantly older than those on dialysis, (median age 83 years vs. 73 years, p < 0.001). For conservatively-managed patients, variables independently associated with poorer EQ-VAS were difficulty performing usual activities (EQ-5D-5L), drowsiness (IPOS-Renal) and shortness of breath (IPOS-Renal). For patients receiving dialysis, variables that were independently associated with poorer EQ-VAS were reduced ability to perform self-care (EQ-5D-5L) and lack of energy (IPOS-Renal). Anxiety and depressive symptoms were not significantly associated with poorer EQ-VAS for either group of patients. CONCLUSIONS Symptoms associated with reduced HRQOL include shortness of breath, drowsiness and impaired functional ability. Optimization of multidisciplinary teams focusing on these issues are likely to be of benefit.

Abstract
Introduction Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important treatment target in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and is associated with poor outcomes. Therefore, it is of clinical importance to identify the key determinants of HRQoL among these patients. There is, however, limited knowledge of how a comprehensive set of psychosocial factors influence HRQoL. We aimed to determine the relative associations of clinical and psychosocial factors with mental and physical components of HRQoL in a sample of CHD outpatients. Methods This cross-sectional study included 1,042 patients 2-36 (mean 16) months after a CHD event recruited from two general Norwegian hospitals with a combined catchment area making up 7% of the Norwegian population, representative with regards to demographic and clinical factors. We collected data on HRQoL, demographics, comorbidities, coronary risk factors, and psychosocial factors. HRQoL was assessed using the Short Form 12 (SF12), which comprises a Mental Component Scale (MCS), and the Physical Component Scale (PCS). Crude and multi-adjusted linear regression analyses were used to investigate the association between covariates and MCS and PCS. Results Mean age was 61 [standard deviation (SD) 10] years, 20% were females, 18% had type D personality, 20% significant depression symptoms, 14% significant symptoms of anxiety whereas 45% reported insomnia. The presence of type D personality (β: -0.19), significant symptoms of depression (β: -0.15), and the presence of insomnia (β: -0.13) were negatively associated with MCS, but not PCS in multi-adjusted analyses. The presence of chronic kidney disease (β: -0.11) was associated with reduced MCS, whereas the presence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (β: -0.08) and low physical activity (β: -0.14) were negatively associated with PCS. Younger age was associated with lower MCS, whereas older age was associated with lower PCS. Discussion We conclude that Type D personality, depressive symptoms, insomnia, and chronic kidney disease were the strongest determinants of the mental component of HRQoL. Assessing and managing these psychological factors among CHD outpatients may improve their mental HRQoL.

Abstract
Taiwan had the second highest number globally of end-stage renal disease patients undergoing treatment in 2018. A meta-analysis of Chen et al. (2021) showed the incidence and mortality rates of COVID-19 were 7.7% and 22.4%, respectively. Few studies have explored the effects of patients' self-participation and perceptions of hemodialysis on their quality of life. This study aimed to explore the factors related to hemodialysis patients' quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was a descriptive correlational study. Patients were recruited (n = 298) from the hemodialysis unit of a medical center in northern Taiwan. Variables included patients' sociodemographic, psychological, spiritual, and clinical characteristics (i.e., perceived health level, comorbidities, hemodialysis duration, weekly frequency, transportation, and accompaniment during hemodialysis), perceptions of hemodialysis, self-participation in hemodialysis, and health-related quality of life (KDQOL-36 scale). Data were analyzed using descriptive and bivariate and multivariate linear regression. Multivariate linear regression, after adjusting for covariates, showed that anxiety, self-perceived health status, two vs. four comorbidities, and self-participation in hemodialysis were significantly associated with quality of life. The overall model was significant and accounted for 52.2% (R2 = 0.522) of the variance in quality of life during hemodialysis (adjusted R2 = 0.480). In conclusion, the quality of life of hemodialysis patients with mild, moderate, or severe anxiety was poorer, whereas that of patients with fewer comorbidities, higher self-perceived health status, and higher self-participation in hemodialysis was better.

Abstract
Low health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is associated with adverse outcomes in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) patients. We examined the modifiable factors associated with low HRQOL in these patients. We enrolled 141 DKD patients. HRQOL was assessed with the Short Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire. Low HRQOL was defined as a score > one standard deviation below the mean. Depression and anxiety were assessed with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-D and HDAS-A, respectively). The patients’ median age was 65 years, and 73% were men. The prevalence rates of anxiety and depression were 8% (n = 11) and 17% (n = 24), respectively. Forty (28%) patients were identified as poor sleepers, and 40 (28%) had low physical activity levels. Anxiety, depression, and poor sleep quality were negatively correlated with SF-36 scores. Higher levels of physical activity and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were correlated with higher SF-36 scores, which indicated better health status. Higher depression scores (HADS-D scores) were associated with low HRQOL, independent of factors including age, sex, smoking status, comorbidities, eGFR, anemia, sleep quality, anxiety levels, and physical activity levels (odds ratio, 1.43; 95% confidence interval, 1.17–1.75). Among the clinical and psycho-physical factors, depression was a main determinant of low HRQOL in DKD patients.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a clinical condition characterized by the loss of kidney function over time, as well as several complications affecting gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal systems. Physical exercise seems to induce positive adaptations in CKD patients, without side effects. Usually, these patients show a reduced physical activity and physical performance. The aim of this case-report was to evaluate the effects of an online training protocol on functional capacity and on muscle mass, in CKD stage III patients. Methods: Two CKD (stage III according to KDIGO guidelines) participants (1 female, Patient A; 1 male, Patient B) were enrolled and they performed an online tailored-supervised combined training lasting 12 weeks, including multi-joint strength exercises using TheraBand and an aerobic session at 65–70% of the patients' heart rate reserve. Results: Both patients showed an improving trend on functional capacity (6 minutes walking test: Patient A = +3%; Patient B = +5.3%) and on strength of the upper arms (handgrip strength test-right: Patient A = +13.4%; Patient B = +19.1%; handgrip strength test-left: Patient A = +42.8%; Patient B= +12.9%), as well as a reduction in inflammation and oxidative stress biomarkers. The protocol was feasible, and no side effects were evidenced. These case studies suggest that the online combined training can produce beneficial effects in CKD patients under conservative therapy, by reducing the CKD-related complications and improving the adherence to exercise of this population of patients, overcoming logistic barriers such as transportation, availability of facilities, and working and personal-life schedule.

Abstract
: The aim of this study was to conduct 3 literature reviews to examine the impact of atopic dermatitis (AD) and chronic hand eczema (CHE) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared with other chronic conditions by comparing reported utility scores of 4 commonly used generic HRQoL instruments. A systematic search was performed using PubMed, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Health Technology Assessment database, and ScHARRHUD. Inclusion criteria included, but were not limited to, patients of any age, studies from any location, publications reporting utility data based on EuroQoL 5 dimensions, the EuroQoL 5-dimension Visual Analog Scale, the Short-Form Health Survey, and the Short-Form 6 Dimensions in the English language. Inclusion criteria were met by 16 articles for AD, 25 articles for chronic conditions, and 9 articles for CHE. The findings of this review highlight that the disutility and loss in HRQoL of patients with AD and CHE are similar to or higher than other chronic conditions, such as cancer or hepatitis.

Abstract
Objetivo: Analizar el impacto de la variabilidad intramétodo de la Termodilución (TD) en las medidas prospectivas de flujo de acceso (QA) y su relación con los parámetros de seguimiento de primera generación. Método: Estudio prospectivo. Se realizaron 2 mediciones consecutivas de QA (M1 y M2) y un seguimiento (M3) en 6 meses. Se recogieron datos demográficos y parámetros de seguimiento de primera generación. Resultado: Se analizaron 112 fistulas arteriovenosas(FAV). La mediana de la variabilidad generada entre M1 y M2 no difiere del porcentaje de variación de QA a los 6 meses (p=0,123). En el 16,8% (14) de los pacientes el QA ha disminuido más del 25% y en un 28,9% (24) aumentó más del 25%. Se evidenció una ligera tendencia a aumentar el porcentaje de descenso de QA a medida que el flujo de las fístulas es mayor (r=-0,229; p=0,006). Por otra parte, un descenso de QA superior al 25% no se asoció a menor dosis de diálisis (p=0,183), ni ha aumento significativo de la presión venosa dinámica (p=0,823) ni al aumento de incidencias durante la punción (p=0,823). Conclusiones: La presencia de pacientes con aumento de flujo superior a la variabilidad intramétodo y la no asociación entre un descenso superior al 25% y cambios en otros parámetros de seguimiento, hace sospechar la presencia de errores de medición de QA. Frente a ello es conveniente el uso combinado con métodos de primera generación, tanto para establecer el QA basal como para interpretar los descensos en el seguimiento.

Abstract
la salud de los pacientes con enfermedad renal crónica avanzada y determinar su relación con la dependencia para las actividades instrumentales de la vida diaria. Material y Método: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal en el Servicio de Nefrología del Hospital Universitario Reina Sofía de Córdoba, en el que se incluyeron pacientes con enfermedad renal crónica avanzada en estadios 4-5. Se utilizaron los siguientes cuestionarios: KDQOL-SF, para analizar la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud; Lawton y Brody, para dependencia para las actividades instrumentales de la vida diaria. Resultados: Se estudiaron 105 pacientes con una edad de 67,8±15,7 años; 35 mujeres (33,3%). En el KDQOL-SF, las dimensiones más afectadas fueron los Cambios en el estado de salud, Situación laboral, Carga de la enfermedad renal, Salud general, Vitalidad y Rol físico. El 57,1% de la muestra tenían algún grado de dependencia para las actividades instrumentales de la vida diaria. Los pacientes con mayor grado de dependencia presentaron peores puntuaciones en las dimensiones Efectos de la enfermedad renal, Situación laboral, Función cognitiva, Sueño, Función física, Rol físico, Dolor, Función social y Vitalidad. Conclusiones: Los pacientes en prediálisis tienen disminuida la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud en las dimensiones Cambios en el estado de salud, Situación laboral, Carga de la enfermedad renal, Salud general, Vitalidad y Rol físico. Más de la mitad de la muestra presentan algún tipo grado de dependencia para la realización de las actividades instrumentales de la vida diaria.

Abstract
Introduction: In the last three decades, health systems have continued to pay increasing attention to the quality of life (QOL) due to definitional changes in the concept of health and disease. The health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is significantly affected, regardless of the stage of CKD. Areas covered: We attempt to thoroughly explore how CKD affects HRQOL domains with a quick primer on HRQOL assessment instruments in patients with CKD. Also, we pointed out the factors affecting HRQOL in patients with CKD as well as the clinical application of HRQOL in CKD management. Expert opinion: The general population enjoys higher HRQOL than patients with CKD in all domains. Similarly, pre-dialysis and kidney-transplant patients have better HRQOL than dialysis population. There are many factors which negatively impact HRQOL in CKD which include for example depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairment for the social domain, inactivity, and frailty for the physical domain as well as lack of social support and extroversion in the social domain. Additionally, social disparities and CKD-related factors would influence HRQOL. Of note, there is no global standard HRQOL assessment tool. Finally, HRQOL should be included in future CKD management guidelines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic kidney disease (CKD) leads to decreased quality of life (QOL) by increasing the risk of death during the progression of its pathogenesis. However, many factors can be improved to support QOL. This study aimed to assess QOL among CKD patients in Nepal and to determine the factors associated with their QOL. METHOD A cross-sectional study was used for data collection. CKD cases receiving medical attention in the Bir Hospital in Mahaboudh, Kathmandu; Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu; Sumeru Hospital in Dhapakhel, Lalitpur; and Shahid Dharma Bhakta National Transplant Centre in Bhaktapur between August and October 2019 were invited to participate in the study. A validated questionnaire and the kidney disease quality of life short form (KDQOL-SF™ 1.3) were used to assess QOL. A questionnaire was completed by the researcher in face-to-face interviews. Logistic regression was used to detect the associations between variables at the significance level of α = 0.05. RESULTS A total of 440 participants were recruited into the study: 56.59% were males, 74.32% were aged between 31 and 70 years, 25.68% were illiterate, and 82.95% were unemployed. The prevalence of good QOL among CKD in the domains of the physical component summary (PCS), mental component summary (MCS), and kidney disease component summary (KDCS) with and without hemodialysis were 53.64, 22.05, 21.28, and 13.19%, respectively. After controlling for all potential confounding factors, eight variables were found to be associated with good QOL in the domain of PCS: age, education, stage of CKD, hemodialysis, transporting oneself to a hospital, health insurance, medical expenses, and perceived lack of difficulty in handling medical expenses. Six variables were associated with good QOL in the domain of MCS after controlling for all potential confounding factors: residence, stage of CKD, transporting oneself to a hospital, health insurance, medical expenses, and perceived lack of difficulty in handling medical expenses. CONCLUSIONS Public health interventions should be developed and implemented to improve QOL among CKD patients in Nepal by focusing on older female patients who have low education, live in rural areas and no health insurance.

Abstract
The development of heart disease, followed by the pacemaker implantation, has reduced the quality and psychological problems for patients. Thus, the present study was conducted to determine the effect of prayer on the quality of life and the psychological status of patients with permanent pacemaker. This is a quasi-experimental study in which 75 patients were assigned to experimental and control groups. Religious intervention was conducted for the experimental group, including the Tavasol prayer and four recommended (mustahab) remembrances in 7 sessions. Before and after the intervention, the patients were provided with the quality of life questionnaire and psychological status. Then, the questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive and analytical tests. Before intervention, there was no difference between quality of life status and psychological status of patients, but after intervention, their quality of life increased and their psychological status improved significantly. The implementation of religious intervention based on prayer positively affects the quality of life and psychological status of patients; thus, implementing this intervention is necessary for patients.

Abstract
Decreased renal function due to chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with anxiety and cognitive decline. Although these mental disorders are often obvious in late stage renal disease patients, they might be unnoticeable or are neglected in early stages of the CKD development. Associations between renal and cognitive dysfunction have been indicated by studies performed mainly in patients undergoing dialysis, which itself represents a stress and decreased quality of life. However, experimental and causal studies are scarce. Our aim was to investigate dynamic changes in behavioral traits during the progression of CKD in an animal model. Thirty 12-week old male rats were used in this experiment. CKD was induced by a subtotal (5/6) nephrectomy. Two, 4, and 6 months after surgical induction of CKD, the open field, the light-dark box and the novel object recognition tests were conducted to assess the locomotor activity, anxiety-like behavior and the memory function of rats. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), plasma concentration of creatinine (CREAT), albumin to creatinine ratio in urine (ACR) along with the renal histology were assessed to monitor the development and severity of CKD. In comparison to control rats, 5/6 nephrectomized rats had by 46–66% higher concentration of BUN during the whole follow-up period, as well as by 52% and by 167% higher CREAT and ACR, respectively, 6 months after surgery. Although the effect of time was observed in some behavioral parameters, nephrectomy did not significantly influence either locomotor activity, or anxiety-like behavior, or memory function of animals. Two and 4 months after surgery, animals moved shorter distance and spent less time in the center zone. However, the open-field ambulation returned back to the baseline level 6 months after CKD induction. Although nephrectomized rats displayed impaired kidney function as early as 2 months after surgery, no significant differences were found between the CKD and the control rats in any of the observed behaviors. Further studies are needed in order to evaluate whether behavioral abnormalities are related to severity of CKD or might be attributed to psychosocial aspect of end-stage renal disease and decreased quality of life in dialysis patients.

Abstract
The impact of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) on outcomes remains unclear in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients despite its importance in socioeconomic aspects and individual health. We aim to identify the relationship between HRQOL and progression of CKD in pre-dialysis patients. A total 1622 patients with CKD were analyzed in the KoreaN cohort Study for Outcomes in patients With Chronic Kidney Disease, a prospective cohort study. CKD progression was defined as one or more of the following: initiation of dialysis or transplantation, a two-fold increase in baseline serum creatinine levels, or a 50% decline in the estimated glomerular filtration rate during the follow-up period. The group with CKD progression had lower scores of HRQOL than the group without CKD progression. A fully adjusted Cox proportional hazard ratio model showed that each low baseline physical and mental component summary score was associated with a higher risk of CKD progression. In Kaplan-Meier survival analysis using propensity score matched data, only low physical component summary scores showed statistical significance with CKD progression. Our study highlights low physical component summary score for an important prognostic factor of CKD progression. Risk-modification interventions for high-risk patients may provide benefits to individuals.
