Abstract
Background Increasing research has examined the factors related to smartphone use disorder. However, limited research has explored its neural basis. Aims We aimed to examine the relationship between the topology of the resting-state electroencephalography (rs-EEG) brain network and smartphone use disorder using minimum spanning tree analysis. Furthermore, we examined how negative emotions mediate this relationship. Methods This study included 113 young, healthy adults (mean age = 20.87 years, 46.9% males). Results The results showed that the alpha- and delta-band kappas and delta-band leaf fraction were positively correlated with smartphone use disorder. In contrast, the alpha-band diameter was negatively correlated with smartphone use disorder. Negative emotions fully mediated the relationship between alpha-band kappa and alpha-band diameter and smartphone use disorder. Furthermore, negative emotions partially mediated the relationship between delta-band kappa and smartphone use disorder. The findings suggest that excessive scale-free alpha- and delta-band brain networks contribute to the emergence of smartphone use disorder. In addition, the findings also demonstrate that negative emotions and smartphone use disorder share the same neural basis. Negative emotions play a mediating role in the association between topological deviations and smartphone use disorder. Discussion To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to examine the neural basis of smartphone use disorder from the perspective of the topology of the rs-EEG brain network. Therefore, neuromodulation may be a potential intervention for smartphone use disorder.

Abstract
Previous studies have reported a role of alterations in the brain's inhibitory control mechanism in addiction. Mounting evidence from neuroimaging studies indicates that its key components can be evaluated with brain oscillations and connectivity during inhibitory control. In this study, we developed an internet-related stop-signal task with electroencephalography (EEG) signal recorded to investigate inhibitory control. Healthy controls and participants with Internet addiction were recruited to participate in the internet-related stop-signal task with 19-channel EEG signal recording, and the corresponding event-related potentials and spectral perturbations were analyzed. Brain effective connections were also evaluated using direct directed transfer function. The results showed that, relative to the healthy controls, participants with Internet addiction had increased Stop-P3 during inhibitory control, suggesting that they have an altered neural mechanism in impulsive control. Furthermore, participants with Internet addiction showed increased low-frequency synchronization and decreased alpha and beta desynchronization in the middle and right frontal regions compared to healthy controls. Aberrant brain effective connectivity was also observed, with increased occipital-parietal and intra-occipital connections, as well as decreased frontal-paracentral connection in participants with Internet addiction. These results suggest that physiological signals are essential in future implementations of cognitive assessment of Internet addiction to further investigate the underlying mechanisms and effective biomarkers.

Abstract
The development of the Internet has changed people's lives and has resulted in a new type of addictive behavior. In the past decade, Internet game addiction has been identified as a mental illness. Considering internet game addiction as the only cause of mental illness is limited in its view, as internet games, social platforms and other internet multimedia are also widely used. Thus, other internet-related behaviors, that maybe addictive, should also be included. Previous neuroimaging studies have reported a role of alteration in brain's inhibitory control mechanism in addiction. However, the results are still diverse with inconsistent findings. In this study, we used an Internet-related stop signal task with EEG signals recorded to study the relationship between internet addiction through brain oscillations and functional connectivity. We also compared the differences in the brain connectivity between addicted and non-addicted participants using phase lag index. We found that the brain connectivity in participants addicted to the internet is significantly greater than that of nonaddicted users.Clinical Relevance- In this study, we assessed brain functional networks of participants with Internet Gaming Disorder and internet addiction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is receiving increasing attention owing to its effects on daily living and psychological function. METHODS In this study, electroencephalography was used to compare neural activity triggered by repeated presentation of a stimulus in healthy controls (HCs) and those with IGD. A total of 42 adult men were categorized into two groups (IGD, n = 21) based on Y-IAT-K scores. Participants were required to watch repeated presentations of video games while wearing a head-mounted display, and the delta (D), theta (T), alpha (A), beta (B), and gamma (G) activities in the prefrontal (PF), central (C), and parieto-occipital (PO) regions were analyzed. RESULTS The IGD group exhibited higher absolute powers of DC, DPO, TC, TPO, BC, and BPO than HCs. Among the IGD classification models, a neural network achieves the highest average accuracy of 93% (5-fold cross validation) and 84% (test). CONCLUSIONS These findings may significantly contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the neurological features associated with IGD and provide potential neurological markers that can be used to distinguish between individuals with IGD and HCs.

Abstract
Social media addiction is the emerging occurrence in which individuals develop psychological dependencies on microblog, wechat, Tik Tok and so on. Existing research has demonstrated the possible relationship between mobile social media addiction and disordered eating attitudes/behavior. In this study, we investigated the relationship between executive function, especially food-inhibitory control, affective state/stress, and mobile social media addiction among female college students as all play predictive roles in food addiction. A structural equation model was used to examine the mediation model hypothesis, and the results confirmed the mediating role of affective state and stress between executive function, especially inhibitory control over high-calorie food, and mobile social media addiction among Chinese female college students. The results verify the correlation between social media addiction and disordered eating attitudes/behavior from the perspective of psychological mechanisms. These proposals emphasize the significance of improving inhibitory control over high-calorie food and the importance of providing psychological counseling to intervene in negative emotions and stress management in female college students.

Abstract
The present research explored electrophysiological activity (EEG) related to problematic internet use (PIU) vulnerability in a nonclinical population. Vulnerability to PIU was assessed through internet addiction test (IAT) in a sample of 23 participants. Moreover, they underwent a behavioral Iowa gambling task (IGT) for testing decision-making functioning and N2 event-related potentials (ERPs) component was monitored during an attentional inhibitory Go/NoGo task performance with addiction-related background pictures (videogames, online gambling, and neutral stimuli). IAT measure positively correlated with both IGT index and N2 variation at the Go/NoGo task. High-IAT young participants showed specific responses to internet addiction-related cues (pictures representing online gambling) in terms of ERPs amplitude of N2pc for Go trials in Pz. Findings suggested an early attentional facilitation effect for specific addiction-related stimuli, online gambling-related stimuli, suggesting a selective attention bias for salient stimuli in this population. While higher levels of IAT do not seem to correspond to a deficit in decision-making abilities, the selective attention mechanisms show to be partially biased in response to the salience of external cues.

Abstract
PURPOSE The use of the internet is a tool and media literacy has become an essential skill among adolescents. Related to this behavior, some adolescents evoke cardiovascular effects. The purpose of this study was to explore a possible correlation between internet use behavior and occurrence of palpitations and related symptoms among a representative cohort of adolescents from the north-west region of Romania. METHOD The study included students of seven middle schools from Northwest Romania. Participants completed an anonymous questionnaire consisting of 18 questions about internet use. RESULTS In total, 1147 students responded to the study. Mean duration of daily internet usage was 2.57 h during school time and 3.57 h during the holidays. A total of 77% of adolescents had more than one symptom related to internet use, and 11% of them reported palpitations and related symptoms. We found an independent relation between palpitation and urban background, palpitations and the internet usage time interval 20:00-24:00, and palpitations and tobacco smoking. Strong heartbeats were independently associated with the time interval 12:00-16:00, tobacco smoking, and energy drink consumption. CONCLUSION In our cohort, the most important factors associated with the occurrence of palpitations and related symptoms were the timeframe of internet usage and smoking.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of chronic methamphetamine use on the topological organization of whole-brain functional connectivity network (FCN) by reconstruction of neural-activity time series at resting-state. The EEG of 36 individuals with methamphetamine use disorder (IWMUD) and 24 normal controls (NCs) were recorded, pre-processed and source-reconstructed using standardized low-resolution tomography (sLORETA). The brain FCNs of participants were constructed and between-group differences in network topological properties were investigated using graph theoretical analysis. IWMUD showed decreased characteristic path length, increased clustering coefficient and small-world index at delta and gamma frequency bands compared to NCs. Moreover, abnormal changes in inter-regional connectivity and network hubs were observed in all the frequency bands. The results suggest that the IWMUD and NCs have distinct FCNs at all the frequency bands, particularly at the delta and gamma bands, in which deviated small-world brain topology was found in IWMUD.

Abstract
Background Numerous studies suggest that exercise may be an effective adjunct treatment for substance use disorders. It has been suggested that exercise-induced improvements in inhibitory control may reduce craving for the substance of abuse. However, this potential mechanism has seldom been researched. Objectives The aim of the ExAlCo Study is to examine how acute bouts of exercise, at varying intensities, impact on craving for cocaine or alcohol. Cerebral haemodynamic responses during cognitive tests of inhibitory control, and exposure to substance-related cue imagery, will also be assessed using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Design The study is a crossover randomised controlled trial. Participants will be recruited from inpatient and outpatient psychiatric treatment centres, on the approval of their treating physician. A healthy control group will be recruited using online advertising. All participants will undergo each of three conditions in randomised order: 20 min of cycle ergometry at 50–60% of maximum heart rate; 20 min of exercise at 70–80% of maximum heart rate; and 20 min of quiet reading. Immediately before and after each condition, participants will be asked to complete a computerised Stroop test, watch a film containing substance-related images and self-report craving levels. During the Stroop test and film viewing, participants’ neural activity will be measured via functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Outcomes The primary outcome measures are self-reported craving, inhibitory control and cerebral haemodynamic response to the Stroop test and a substance-related film. It is hoped that the findings from this study will shed more light on the role of exercise in the treatment of substance use disorders, particularly its scope in preventing relapse through reduced craving severity.
