Abstract
TRPV1 channel is a sensitive ion channel activated by some noxious stimuli and has been reported to change many physiological functions after its activation. In this paper, we present a scientometric approach to explore the trends of the association between TRPV1 channel and inflammation and our goal is to provide creative directions for future research. The related literature was retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection and then analyzed by CiteSpace and VOSviewer. A total of 1533 documents were screened. The most productive country, institution, journal, author, cited journal, cited author, and references were the United States, University of California, San Francisco, Pain, Lu-yuan Lee, Nature, Michael J. Caterina, and Caterina MJ (Science, 2000), respectively. The most influential country and institution were Switzerland and University of California, San Francisco, respectively. The cooperation among countries or institutions was extensive. Amounts of documents were distributed in molecular, biology, genetics. TRPV1-associated neurons, neuropeptides, neuropathic pain, neuroinflammation, and neurogenic inflammation were mainly hotspots in this field. The research has presented valuable data about previous studies in the link of TRPV1 channel and inflammation.

Abstract
Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is used in ophthalmological disease screening and diagnostics, medical image diagnostics, and predicting late-disease progression rates. We reviewed all AI publications associated with macular edema (ME) research Between 2011 and 2022 and performed modeling, quantitative, and qualitative investigations. Methods: On 1st February 2023, we screened the Web of Science Core Collection for AI applications related to ME, from which 297 studies were identified and analyzed (2011-2022). We collected information on: publications, institutions, country/region, keywords, journal name, references, and research hotspots. Literature clustering networks and Frontier knowledge bases were investigated using bibliometrix-BiblioShiny, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace bibliometric platforms. We used the R "bibliometrix" package to synopsize our observations, enumerate keywords, visualize collaboration networks between countries/regions, and generate a topic trends plot. VOSviewer was used to examine cooperation between institutions and identify citation relationships between journals. We used CiteSpace to identify clustering keywords over the timeline and identify keywords with the strongest citation bursts. Results: In total, 47 countries published AI studies related to ME; the United States had the highest H-index, thus the greatest influence. China and the United States cooperated most closely between all countries. Also, 613 institutions generated publications - the Medical University of Vienna had the highest number of studies. This publication record and H-index meant the university was the most influential in the ME field. Reference clusters were also categorized into 10 headings: retinal Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) fluid detection, convolutional network models, deep learning (DL)-based single-shot predictions, retinal vascular disease, diabetic retinopathy (DR), convolutional neural networks (CNNs), automated macular pathology diagnosis, dry age-related macular degeneration (DARMD), class weight, and advanced DL architecture systems. Frontier keywords were represented by diabetic macular edema (DME) (2021-2022). Conclusion: Our review of the AI-related ME literature was comprehensive, systematic, and objective, and identified future trends and current hotspots. With increased DL outputs, the ME research focus has gradually shifted from manual ME examinations to automatic ME detection and associated symptoms. In this review, we present a comprehensive and dynamic overview of AI in ME and identify future research areas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a clinical syndrome associated with mitochondria and lacks effective preventive and therapeutic measures. This bibliometric study aims to gain insight into the scientific findings regarding mitochondria in ALI/ARDS. METHODS We retrieved the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) of the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) for mitochondria in ALI/ARDS publications from 2012-2021. VOSviewer, CiteSpace (5.8. R3) and Bibliometrix (3.1.4) R package were used for further analysis and visualization. RESULT A total of 756 English-language articles and reviews were identified. The annual number of publications presented a rapidly developing trend. China was the most productive and cited country, and the USA had the greatest impact. In the keyword co-occurring network, the terms "acute lung injury", "oxidative stress", "inflammation", "mitochondria" and "apoptosis" occurred most frequently. The co-citation network revealed that #1 mesenchymal stromal cell and #3 endothelial cell had the most bursts of citations. In addition, research hotspots have shifted from "potential therapeutic treatments" and "mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)" to "endothelial cell" and "mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC)". CONCLUSION This bibliometric analysis reveals the research directions and frontier hotspots of mitochondria in ALI/ARDS, which has shown a rapid growth trend in annual publication numbers. mtDNA, mitophagy, and apoptosis have been the most active research areas, while studies on mitochondrial transfer in stem cells have become a hot topic in recent years.

Abstract
Background Sepsis is considered an intractable dysfunction that results from the disordered host immune response to uncontrolled infection. Even though the precise mechanism of sepsis remains unclear, scientific advances have highlighted the key role of various programmed cell death processes in the pathophysiology of sepsis. The current study aims to explore the worldwide research trend on programmed cell death in the setting of sepsis and assesses the achievements of publications from various countries, institutions, journals, and authors globally. Material and methods Associated publications during 2002–2022 with the topical subject of sepsis and programmed cell death were extracted from the Web of Science. VOSviewer was utilized to evaluate and map the published trend in the relevant fields. Results All 2,037 relevant manuscripts with a total citation of 71,575 times were screened out by the end of 1 January 2022. China accounted for the largest number of publications (45.07%) and was accompanied by corporate citations (11,037) and H-index (48), which ranked second globally. The United States has been ranked first place with the highest citations (30,775) and H-index (88), despite a low publication number (29.95%), which was subsequent to China. The journal Shock accounted for the largest number of publications in this area. R. S. Hotchkiss, affiliated with Washington University, was considered to have published the most papers in the relevant fields (57) and achieved the highest citation frequencies (9,523). The primary keywords on the topic of programmed cell death in sepsis remarkably focused on “inflammation” “immunosuppression”, and “oxidative stress”, which were recognized as the core mechanisms of sepsis, eventually attributing to programmed cell death. The involved research on programmed cell death induced by immune dysregulation of sepsis was undoubtedly the hotspot in the pertinent areas. Conclusions The United States has been academically outstanding in sepsis-related research. There appears to be an incompatible performance between publications and quantity with China. Frontier advances may be consulted in the journal Shock. The leading-edge research on the scope of programmed cell death in sepsis should preferably focus on immune dissonance-related studies in the future.

Abstract
Background and aims Cyclic guanosine monophosphate (GMP)-adenosine monophosphate (AMP) (cGAMP) synthase (cGAS) and stimulator of interferon genes (STING) are key components of the innate immune system. This study aims to evaluate the research of cGAS-STING pathway and predict the hotspots and developing trends in this field using bibliometric analysis. Methods We retrieved publications from Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-expanded) of Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) in 1975-2021 on 16 March 2022. We examined the retrieved data by bibliometrix package in R software, VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used for visualizing the trends and hotspots of research on the cGAS-STING pathway. Results We identified 1047 original articles and reviews on the cGAS-STING pathway published between 1975 and 2021. Before 2016, the publication trend was increasing steadily, but there was a significant increase after 2016. The United States of America (USA) produced the highest number of papers (Np) and took the highest number of citations (Nc), followed by China and Germany. The University of Texas System and Frontiers in Immunology were the most prolific affiliation and journal respectively. In addition, collaboration network analysis showed that there were tight collaborations among the USA, China and some European countries, so the top 10 affiliations were all from these countries and regions. The paper published by Sun LJ in 2013 reached the highest local citation score (LCS). Keywords co-occurrence and co-citation cluster analysis revealed that inflammation, senescence, and tumor were popular terms related to the cGAS-STING pathway recently. Keywords burst detection suggested that STING-dependent innate immunity and NF-κB-dependent broad antiviral response were newly-emerged hotspots in this area. Conclusions This bibliometric analysis shows that publications related to the cGAS-STING pathway tend to increase continuously. The research focus has shifted from the mechanism how cGAS senses dsDNA and cGAMP binds to STING to the roles of the cGAS-STING pathway in different pathological state.

Abstract
Background Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a serious disease with high mortality. The tumor microenvironment plays a key role in the occurrence and development of PC. The purpose of this study is to analyze trends by year, country, institution, journal, reference and keyword in publications on the PC microenvironment and to predict future research hotspots. Methods The Web of Science Core Collection was used to search for publications. We analyzed the contributions of various countries/regions, institutes, and authors and identified research hotspots and promising future trends using the CiteSpace and VOSviewer programs. We also summarized relevant completed clinical trials. Results A total of 2,155 papers on the PC microenvironment published between 2011 and 2021 were included in the study. The number of publications has increased every year. The average number of citations per article was 32.69. The USA had the most publications, followed by China, and a total of 50 influential articles were identified through co-citation analysis. Clustering analysis revealed two clusters of keywords: basic research and clinical application. The co-occurrence cluster analysis showed glutamine metabolism, carcinoma-associated fibroblasts, oxidative phosphorylation as the highly concerned research topics of basic research in recently. The three latest hot topics in clinical application are liposomes, endoscopic ultrasound and photodynamic therapy. Conclusion The number of publications and research interest have generally increased, and the USA has made prominent contributions to the study of the tumor microenvironment of PC. The current research hotspots mainly focus on energy metabolism in the hypoxic tumor microenvironment, cancer associated fibroblasts in regulating the tumor microenvironment, accurate diagnosis, drug delivery and new treatments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mycetoma is a neglected tropical disease that attracts little attention in regard to research and publications and hence this study was undertaken to determine the trends and global scientific research output in mycetoma-related fields. METHODS Mycetoma data were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases. The MeSH Browser was used to extract relevant keywords. Biblioshiny software (R-studio cloud), VOSviewer v. 1.6.6 and SPSS software were used for data management. RESULTS Research trends on mycetoma increased globally from 1999 to 2020. The results were 404 documents (4444 citations) in WoS and 513 documents (5709 citations) in Scopus, and the average number of citations per article was 11 in WoS and 11.13 in Scopus. There was a significant association between the total number of citations and the total citations per year in both WoS (r=0.833, p<0.0001) and Scopus (r=0.926, p<0.0001). Sudan, India, the Netherlands and Mexico were the top-ranking productive countries for mycetoma publications in WoS, while India, the USA and Mexico were the top-ranking countries in Scopus. Articles on mycetoma were mainly published in PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, the International Journal of Dermatology and the Journal of Clinical Microbiology. A. H. Fahal from the Mycetoma Research Centre, University of Khartoum, Sudan, had the highest number of citations in mycetoma research during 1999-2020, followed by W. W. J. van de Sande from the Erasmus Medical Centre, University of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, during 2003-2020. CONCLUSION The analysis provides insight into a global overview of Mycetoma research. In addition, the analysis holds a better understanding of the development trends that have emerged in Mycetoma over the past 21 years, which can also offer a scientific reference for future research.

Abstract
Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most prevalent primary intraocular malignancy in adults. Despite a high rate of success in controlling it as a local disease, it is prone to distant metastasis, and its mechanism of metastasis has not been elucidated. This study analyzes trends in UM research and compares contributions from different countries, regions, institutions and authors. We collected all publications related to UM published from 2000 to 2020 from the Web of Science database. GraphPad Prism 6 was used to collect publication data and analyze publication trends. VOSviewer was used for data visualization. A total of 1,710 publications were considered. The United States contributed the most publications [668] and citations (19,605 times) as of 2020 with the highest H-index value [67]. Keywords were classified into three clusters, namely, clinical study, tumor-related study and gene mutation-related study. Average appearing years (AAY) of keywords were calculated. BAP1 (AAY of 2016.3), SF3B1 (AAY of 2015.8) and GNA11 (AAY of 2015.5) were identified as major focuses of this field. We conclude that the United States, Germany, England and the Netherlands have been the most productive regions in terms of UM research over the past two decades. Gene mutations such as GNAQ, GNA11 and BAP1 mutations are identified as potential research focuses.

Abstract
AimWe analysed the 100 most influential articles on leadership in healthcare via a bibliometric analysis to better understand categories and topics in leadership science and their relationship to healthcare. Leadership in healthcare is ever evolving and needs to be robust like any another profession.MethodsA bibliometric analysis was performed. Articles were ranked by citation counts and three independent reviewers screened the abstracts for inclusion. Common themes were categorised.ResultsCitations for articles ranged from 53 to 487 and were published across 50 journals. Articles focused primarily on three leadership subjects: team building, quality improvement and healthcare delivery. Of healthcare provider groups, articles were directed to or concerning primarily: nursing, academic medicine and critical care medicine.ConclusionsWe identified gaps in healthcare leadership development literature. There is an opportunity to effectively identify areas of interest and demand for organised leadership education and training.

Abstract
Background Bronchoscopy is applied broadly in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary diseases. Over the past few decades, an increasing number of studies about bronchoscopy have been published. However, little is known about their qualities and characteristics. Methods All of the databases in Web of Science (including the Web of Science Core Collection, BIOSIS Citation Index, KCI-Korean Journal Database, MEDLINE, Russian Science Citation Index, and SciELO Citation Index) were utilized to identify articles published from 1990 to 2020. The top 100 most cited articles about bronchoscopy were selected for degree centrality analysis and analyses regarding publication time, total citation number, the citation density, time-related flux, first author, published journal, geographic origin, and research theme. Results The selected articles were published mainly in the 2000s and 1990s. Citations per article ranged from 731 to 196. The leading country was the USA, followed by the United Kingdom. The most frequently studied themes were bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid and biopsy. The degree centrality analysis connoted that “BAL, inflammation, diagnosis” had a high degree of centrality in the 1990s, while “diagnosis, BAL, biopsy, prospective” took centre stage in the 2000s. Conclusions The time, area, and theme distribution of the 100 most cited articles on bronchoscopy have been thoroughly analyzed. It is noticeable that researches based on BAL and endobronchial or transbronchial biopsies currently plays a major role.

Abstract
Introduction As scientific knowledge has grown in biomedicine, it has also become necessary to develop tools to manage and understand the body of evidence. In that sense, bibliometrics has become a consolidated discipline for analyzing scientific activity, enabling the characterization of a particular field or area of knowledge by means of the quantification of the bibliographic characteristics of scientific publications. Objective The objective of this study was to determine the most frequently cited articles in the field of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea and otorrhea. Methods The searches took place on the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science platform, which includes the MEDLINE database. The study period was limited to 1945–2018. Results The 101 most cited articles in the field of cerebrospinal fluid leak were published in 36 journals, and the most important specialties contributing to the literature were neurosurgery and otorhinolaryngology. Of the 101 top-cited articles, 70% were published from 1990 to 2018, with two distinct periods of high scientific productivity: 1990–1999 and 2000–2009. In the first period, the main topic of research interest was endoscopic sinus surgery for cerebrospinal fluid fistulas, whereas from 2000 to 2009, documents focused more on surgical aspects of extended skull base approaches. The articles received 73–767 citations. The top article over the whole study period was “A novel reconstructive technique after endoscopic expanded endonasal approaches: vascular pedicle nasoseptal flap” by Hadad et al., which was published 2006 in Laryngoscope. Its publication represented an inflection point in the literature on cerebrospinal fluid leak and endoscopic skull base surgery, and it gave rise to numerous other research publications. Conclusion Different surgical innovations in the field of cerebrospinal fluid leak sparked two different periods of intense scientific activity. Otorhinolaryngology and neurosurgery were the dominant specialties. The most frequent topic studied was endoscopic surgery; others included clinical and diagnostic features, neurinoma surgery, and cerebrospinal fluid leak related to temporal bone fractures.

Abstract
Introduction: Sepsis is an intractable disorder, which is associated with high risk of organ dysfunction and even death, while its pathogenesis remains largely unclear. Our study aims to study the research trend on sepsis and host immune response, and compare the contribution of publications from different countries, institutions, journals and authors. Materials and Methods: We extracted all relevant publications with regard to sepsis and immune response during 1999-2019 from Web of Science. GraphPad Prism 6, and VOSviewer software were used to collect and analyze the publication trend in related field. Results: We identified a total of 1225 publications with citation frequency of 40511 times up to March 30, 2019. The United States accounted for the largest number of publications (36.3%), 51.9% of total citations as well as the highest H-index (72). The sum of publications from China ranked the second, while the overall citations (1935) and H-index (22) ranked the eighth and the seventh, respectively. Journal of Shock had published most papers related to the topic on sepsis and immune response. Ayala A SA, has published the most papers in this field (31), while Hotchkiss RS presented with the most citation frequency (3532). The keyword “regulatory T cell” appeared most recently with an average appearing years of 2014.0. The “immunosuppression related research” seemed to be the hotspot in relevant scope. Conclusions: The United States made the most outstanding contribution within this important field. There is a mismatch between the quantity and quality of publications from China. Latest progress can be tracked in journal of Shock. Immunosuppression related researches may be hotspots in the near future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study provides an accurate awareness of the present situation of health research in Irish hospitals both public and private. We aimed to analyze factors that may influence it and provide recommendations for active steps to improve the current situation of Irish health research based on our findings. METHODS We performed a bibliometric analysis to assess qualitatively and quantitatively the publications from Ireland over a period between 2007 and 2018. We also investigated the associated variables with the quality of research. Furthermore, we conducted a Joinpoint analysis to see the trends in Irish research over these years. RESULTS From 12,828 included peer-reviewed articles, the average citation count per article was 19.98. Furthermore, we showed that a higher impact factor (IF) and institutions number, present per article, were significantly associated with more citations. Also, the publication count and the mean IF showed an increase over the years according to the Joinpoint analysis. Moreover, the oncology research had the highest output, followed by pediatrics, then neurology while the specialties with least publications were ear, nose, and throat (ENT), urology, plastic surgery, and dentistry. Additionally, cardiovascular, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, pediatrics, pulmonology, dermatology, ophthalmology, dentistry, and radiology research showed an increased publication count trend in recent years. While anesthesiology, ENT, general surgery, gastroenterology and hepatology, infection and tropical medicine, nephrology, neurology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, and urology showed a decrease in the publications trend. CONCLUSIONS Our findings may serve as a useful approach to benchmark scientific output from hospitals and guide the future allocation of research spending.

Abstract
This study involves a bibliometric analysis of the medication-adherence research and covers publications from 1997 to 2016. A database of 19 621 publications and 335 208 references from the Web of Science was investigated using the CiteSpace software. Some interesting findings were obtained. First, the most significant developments and progress in the medication-adherence research have occurred in North America and Europe. Second, Osterberg L. and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) are the most cited author and journal, respectively, with the strongest academic influence. Third, the existing studies on medication adherence primarily focus on pharmacology/pharmacy, psychiatry, public environmental occupational health, and general internal medicine. Fourth, research hotspots showed a diversifying trend and increasingly covered chronic diseases. Moreover, the topic of integrating formal outcome evaluations into adherence interventions is one long-term research hotspot. In addition, the research frontiers mainly focus on medication adherence for HIV/AIDS patients, especially active antiretroviral therapy. Finally, the evolution of the medication-adherence research has occurred in approximately three stages: The first stage involved the introduction of the term "compliance" into medicine, then the primary focus shifted to patient adherence to HIV/AIDS medication, and the final stage has involved a diversifying trend with more diseases and methods for measuring adherence being researched in the current stage. Furthermore, because of an aging population and a disease spectrum change in the current phase, the focus of medication-adherence research has gradually shifted from infectious diseases to chronic diseases.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify and characterize the 100 most-cited articles in the field of transient elastography. METHODS The top-cited articles focusing on transient elastography from 1999 to 2017 were retrieved from Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) database. The most prolific article, journal, country and continent, top-cited article in different period, international collaboration, cocitation analysis of journal were retrieved and analyzed in this article. Bibexcel 2016, Microsoft Excel 2010, and VOSviewer 1.6.5 were used to analyze bibliometric records we downloaded. RESULTS The 100 most-cited articles were published between 2003 and 2015. The total citations ranged from 54 to 1376 (mean, 167.52 ± 208.46; median, 89.5) and the annual citations ranged from 4.91 to 98.24 (mean, 17.21±15.68; median, 12.1). The top-cited article was published in Gastroenterology in 2005 by Castera L. et al. (n=1376). The most-cited articles in 2003-2007 (n=1380), 2008-2012 (n=599) and 2013-2017 (n=159) were located. All of the most-cited articles in three periods were focusing on the topic of noninvasive assessment of liver fibrosis. The most prolific author was de Ledinghen V. (n=21) and France (n=43) was the leading country. The most productive journal was Journal of Hepatology (n=20). The major article type was original research article. CONCLUSIONS We undertook efforts to provide an insight into the features and evolvement of the most-cited articles in the field of transient elastography. For transient elastography, as a noninvasive assessment of liver fibrosis, its use in the evaluation of liver fibrosis is gradually mature and shows great advantages. Moreover, the field of transient elastography is in a stage of rapid development.

Abstract
Total number of citations has been considered a proxy for a published study's importance within a given field. However, there are multiple pitfalls to correlating the total number of citations alone with the quality of a study. In this review, the authors aimed to identify the top 100 most-cited studies of hip and knee arthroplasty and then assess study design and quality of reporting. More than half of these studies were level IV evidence, unblinded, not randomized, and not controlled. This underscores the need for higher-quality study design to support practice. Abstract
Background: In recent decades, research on drug therapy for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) remains one of the major hot-spots in the field of critical care medicine, but relevant data are not satisfactory. Our aim was to assess the status and trends of the most cited articles on drug therapy for VAP through bibliometric approaches. Methods: The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science core collection database was searched for the VAP-related articles. The time period for retrieval was from the beginning of the database to September 30, 2018. The top 100 most cited articles were selected to obtain their information on the authors, title, publication, number of citations, author's affiliations, country, etc. These general information and bibliometric data were collected for analysis. VOSviewer software was used to generate a term co-occurrence graph that visualized a reference pattern for different terms in the 100 articles. Results: The number of citations for the 100 selected articles ranged from 142 to 3,218. These articles were published in 31 different journals. The top three journals in terms of the number of our selected articles they published were "Critical Care Medicine" (17 articles), "American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine" (11 articles) and "Clinical Infectious Diseases" (10 articles). The most frequently nominated author was Marin H. Kollef from the University of Washington, and of the top 100 articles, 16 listed his name. These top 100 articles were published after the year of 2000. The most common type of article in the top 100 was an original article (53%). The United States and France were the countries that contributed the most articles to the top 100. Gram-negative bacilli, pseudomonas aeruginosa, antibiotics, risk factors and other terms appeared more frequently, suggesting that attentions on this issue currently focused on the rational application and management of antibiotics. Conclusion: This study analyzed the 100 most cited articles on drug-treated VAP, and provided insights into the historical developments and characteristics of the most cited articles in the field of VAP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a worldwide health issue; although the prospects for most patients are favorable, many still do not respond to the current therapies. Numerous articles related to RA have been published in the past 3 decades; an analysis of the most cited articles in this field was undertaken to identify important articles regarding RA related to pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment. METHODS We searched the Web of Science and collected the general information of the top 100 cited articles. The citation number, publication year, authorship, impact factor (IF) of the journal in the publication year, country origins, article types, and funding source were evaluated. RESULTS The total citations of the top 100 articles varied from 11,922 to 556 and were published between 1985 and 2014. These articles were published in 24 journals, led by Arthritis and Rheumatism (n = 33), followed by the New England Journal of Medicine (n = 15). Most of the articles (n = 80) were produced by ≥5 authors. They were from 34 countries, and the United Stated contributed to most of the articles (n = 58), followed by the United Kingdom (n = 42). The article types were divided into clinical study (n = 55), review (n = 17), meta-analysis (n = 4), clinical guideline (n = 10), and basic science (n = 14). Eighty-seven percent of the articles were supported either by public organizations or medical companies. CONCLUSION This study provided insights into the development of publications and their citations of RA in the past 3 decades. Clinical studies or clinical guidelines published in high-impact journals were more likely to be cited in the field of RA. The latest publications may not be included in the top 100 cited articles, as the more recent studies have not had sufficient time to accumulate the number of citations.

Abstract
Objectives To conduct a comprehensive mapping analysis to the scientific literature published in football aiming to identify the areas of bigger interest and potential for further exploration. Methods The data were obtained by a search conducted on the Web of Science. Articles were listed based on citation frequency. We used an open-source bibliometrix R-package for the comprehensive bibliometric analyses. Results The number of citations per article ranged from 251 to 869 (median 323; IQR 125). The yearly number of citations ranged from 8 to 54 (median 26; IQR 11). Most of the articles (76%) were of level III of evidence, 10% were level II and 14% were level IV. Within the top 50 most-cited articles, 40 articles were original research (37 observational and 3 experimental studies), 9 were review articles and 1 was a thesis. From the 40 original research articles, 50% involved elite players, 73% were exclusive to male players and 80% involved adult players only. The topic area with the highest number of articles was sports medicine (44%), followed by training and testing (32%), performance analysis (14%) and physiology (10%). No study within the top 50 was devoted to biomechanics, nutrition, sport psychology, coaching or social sciences. Conclusions The lack of experimental studies within the top 50 most-cited articles in football clearly underpins how far we still are from establishing the theoretical and methodological guidelines for the applied science and medicine in football.

Abstract
Background Exosomes are small vesicles of endosomal origin, and they can be used for the diagnosis and the treatment. However, limited data were for the evaluation of the trend of exosome researches. This study aims to investigate the trend of exosome researches and compare the contribution of research from different regions, organizations and authors. Methods Exosome related publications from 2007 to 2016 were retrieved from the Web of Science database. Excel, GraphPad Prism 5 and VOSviewer software were used to analyze the research trend. Results A total of 1852 papers were identified and were cited 62967 times. The United States accounted for 38.8% of the articles, 42.0% of the citations, and the highest H-index (76). China ranked the second in the number of articles, but the sixth in citation frequency (4337) and the fourth in H-index (36). The journals, PLoS ONE and J Biol Chem had the highest number of publications. The author, Gabrielsson S., has published the most papers in this field (22). The keyword “ribonucleic acid” was mentioned the most at 746 times, and the words, “stem cell”, “drug resistance” and “monocyte cell factor” were the latest hotspots appeared around 2015. Conclusion Literature growth related to exosome is expanding rapidly. The quality of the articles from China still requires improvement. Recent studies focus on the relationship with tumor, and “stem cell”, “drug resistance” and “michigan cancer foundation-7” may be the newest topics that should be closely followed in exosome research.

Abstract
Citation classics have been published in many fields of medicine; however, none have focused on interventional cardiology. The goal of this study was to identify the top 100 articles in the field of interventional cardiology and highlight their important trends and characteristics. The Scopus database was used by 2 independent reviewers to extract the top 100 articles using a variety of keywords. We found articles published between 1953 and 2012. Majority (n = 78) of the top 100 articles were published between 1996 and 2010, and the United States was affiliated with the highest number of articles in our list (n = 68). Over half (n = 54) the articles were funded. Private funding was correlated with higher citations (p = 0.036). A third (n = 33) of the papers had authors with conflicts of interest; however, conflict of interest had no effect on citations (p = 0.837). Majority (n = 57) of the articles studied coronary angioplasty and stenting; followed by coronary angiography (n = 14). Women were underrepresented, with only 11 female first authors in the top 100 papers, and only 1 female in the list of top authors who had 5 or more publications. In conclusion, the following features define the typical highly cited article in interventional cardiology-a clinical trial conducted in the United States, which studies angioplasty, and has been published relatively recently in a high-impact journal by a male first author.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, there has been increased interest in the use of ultrasound technology in the evaluation of spinal and paraspinal regions. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate trends in spinal ultrasound research from 1994 to 2015 and compare the contributions of such research from different countries and authors. STUDY DESIGN Bibliometric analysis. SETTING Publications related to spinal ultrasound from 1994 to 2015 were retrieved from the Web of Science database. METHODS Excel 2013, GraphPad Prism 5, and VOSviewer were used to summarise bibliometric features, including the number of publications, citation frequency, H-index, and country contributions and hotspots (keywords of popular scientific fields). RESULTS A total of 3859 papers were included. The global inflection point (the point in time when the publication growth rate moved from positive to negative) came in 2010. The United States contributed the largest percentage of articles (1041; 26.9%), with the most citations (19 848) and the highest H-index (61). The journals Osteoporosis International and Spine had the highest publication number. The University of Toronto and the University of California, San Francisco were the most contributive institutions. Studies could be divided into three clusters: surgery, osteoporosis, and others. The keywords 'adolescent idiopathic scoliosis' and 'anaesthesia' were the latest hotspots, appearing around 2012. CONCLUSION Spinal ultrasound literature has grown continuously over the last 22 years, with the rate slowing down after 2010. The United States was the largest contributor in this field. Recent studies on topics related to 'adolescent idiopathic scoliosis' and 'anaesthesia' were relatively new and should be closely followed in spinal ultrasound research.

Abstract
Bibliometric analyses can help researchers and research funding agencies determine which areas of medicine need appropriate research attention. Citation classics of several specialties and subspecialties have been published; however, a literature search did not turn up any in the field of valvular heart disease (VHD). The main objective of this analysis was to overcome this paucity by identifying the top 100 cited articles in VHD and to assess their characteristics. We chose Scopus as our database, from where relevant articles were extracted after a thorough search by 2 independent researchers. A list of the top 100 cited articles was prepared, after which a detailed analysis of the list was conducted. The top-cited articles were published in the 63-year era starting from 1951, with the most articles published in the 10-year interval of 2001 to 2010. The citations of the articles ranged from 438 to 2,717 with a median of 609.5. Manuscripts from our top-cited list originated from 25 different countries. Most of the articles in the top 100 list were published in high-impact journals, with about a third of the articles published in Circulation (n = 27). Our study also reveals that the current focus of researchers in the field is on transcatheter aortic valve replacement, and therefore, funding in this area is likely to result in impactful studies. In conclusion, our study highlights the characteristics of high-impact articles in the field of VHD, and this information may be useful for investigators planning to conduct studies in this area of medicine in the future.

Abstract
Introduction Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a huge burden for human health. Recent studies show the close relationship between DM and T cells. We investigated the trend in DM and T cells research. Methods Using the Web of Science database, we searched the publications on DM and T cells in 1997–2016, and studied the source data using bibliometric methodology. Excel 2016, GraphPad Prism 5, and VOSviewer software were used to analyze the publication trend in DM and T cells research. Results We found a total of 1077 publications with 38109 citations up to January 23, 2017. The highest contribution came from the United States, with 48.38% of the publications, 61.44% of the citations and the highest H-index (74). China had the 5th place for total publications, but ranked 11th both for citation frequency (604) and H-index (13). The inflection point of the global DM and T cells publications was in 2000. Journal of Immunology published the most related articles (164). Santamaria P. was the leading scholar in this field with the most publications (35). The keywords “regulatory T cell” and “autoimmune diabetes” were mentioned more than 300 times. Furthermore, type 2 (T2)DM, T cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain (TIM) and obesity are becoming popular research topics in this field. Conclusion The quantity of publications on DM and T cells grew rapidly around year 2000, but has relatively decreased recently. The United States had the leading position in global research. There was a discrepancy between productivity and quality of publications from China. Latest progress is most likely first published by the Journal of Immunology. Santamaria P., Roep B.O. and Peakman M. were the pioneer scholars in this field. Most researchers have focused on “regulatory T cell” and “autoimmune diabetes” research. In future, T2DM, TIM and obesity may be the popular areas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bibliometric analysis is an approach to evaluate the circumstances and trends in specific research field over time and to provide inspiration in future research and policy. Researches have a tremendous increase focus on the role of the microbiota in the development of diabetes in recent years; however, there is no published literature conducting a bibliometric analysis to explore the tendency. The aim of this study was to provide a detailed evaluation of the hundred most cited articles in microbiota of diabetes research. METHODS The database of the Web of Science was utilized for identification of articles. The top 100 were selected for further analysis of authorship, number of citations, article type, source journal, geographic origin, and interactions. RESULTS The articles selected were published from 2007 to 2015. The total citations ranged from 1289 to 35, citation density ranged from 163.75 to 6.5. The article type included basic science (n = 32), review (n = 29), expert opinion (n = 19), cross-sectional study (n = 12), RCT (n = 3), and others (n = 5). The study content included pathogenesis (n = 58), risk factor (n = 11), modifying of intestinal microbiota (n = 10), prebiotic treatment (n = 8), antibiotic treatment (n = 4), diet control (n = 4), and others (n = 5). The 100 most cited articles were published in 59 journals. Among them, Diabetes (n = 7), Diabetologia (n = 7), and Plos one (n = 7) published the most T100 articles. In total, 24 countries and 174 scientific research institutions participated in those researches. USA (n = 32) and Belgium (n = 22) were the leading countries in this field, followed by France (n = 18) and Finland (n = 16). Patrice D. Cani contributed the most top cited articles (n = 15). CONCLUSION This bibliometric study is likely to include a list of intellectual milestones focused on microbiota of diabetes research in the past decade, which provides insights into the circumstances and trends in preventing and treating diabetes from a new perspective.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The top-cited systematic reviews/meta-analyses in tuberculosis research have not been identified. The objective of this study was to identify the 100 top-cited systematic reviews/meta-analyses in tuberculosis research, and to understand factors resulting in highly cited works, and establish trends in systematic reviews/meta-analyses in tuberculosis research. METHODS The Web of Science Core Collection was searched for systematic reviews/meta-analyses on tuberculosis up to January 31, 2016. Articles were ranked by citation count and screened by 2 authors. The following information was collected and analyzed from each included study: citation of Web of Science Core Collection, author, country, year, journal, institution, page number, and reference number. RESULTS The 100 top-cited studies were cited from 54 to 662 times and were published between 1997 and 2014. Ten authors have more than 1 study as the first author and 10 authors have more than 1 study as corresponding author. The country with the most top-cited studies was USA (n = 26). The institutions with the largest number of the studies were McGill University in Canada (n = 18). The studies were published in 32 journals, whereas 12 were published in PloS Medicine, followed by Lancet Infectious Diseases (n = 11). CONCLUSIONS Developed countries and high-impact journals may publish more top-cited systematic review/meta-analysis in tuberculosis research.

Abstract
Background To identify and characterize the most frequently cited articles that have been published on aortic dissection. Methods A list of the 100 most frequently cited publications (T100) about aortic dissection was generated by performing a searching of the Science Citation Index--Expanded using “aortic dissection” as the search term. Basic information about the articles was recorded, including number of citations, journal title, journal impact factor, time since publication, first author’s country, topic/subspecialty of the research, and publication type. Results We finally included 180 articles on aortic dissection, from which we identified the 100 most frequently cited articles (T100). The most frequently cited article received 1079 citations, while the least frequently cited article received 68 (mean140.5 citations per article). The T100 originated from 19 countries, with more than half of them originating from the USA (n = 97). The T100 articles were published from 1955 to 2013, with 79% published during the period 1990–2009. In addition, there were 40 different journals with Circulation having the most citations (n = 38). Regarding the article type, there were 21 basic and 140 clinical research articles, one meta-analysis, and 18 review articles. Reviews had the highest mean number of citations (mean 235.5 citations per article). Conclusions Our study provides a historical perspective on the progress of dissection research, and helps to identify the quality of the work, the discoveries made, and the trends steering the studies. Abstract
BACKGROUND Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive breast cancer subtype. However, there have been limited data to evaluate the trend of TNBC research. This study aims to investigate the trend of TNBC research and compare the contribution of research from different regions, organizations, and authors. METHODS TNBC-related publications from 2007 to 2015 were retrieved from the Web of Science database. Excel 2013 (Redmond, Washington, USA), GraphPad Prism 5 (GraphPad Prism Software Inc., San Diego, CA), and VOSviewer (Leiden University, Leiden, Netherlands) software were used to analyze the trend of TNBC research. This article does not contain any studies with human participants or animals performed by any of the authors. RESULTS A total of 1695 papers were identified and were cited 34,078 times with a time limit of May 27, 2016. The United States accounted for 43.10% of the articles, 57.59% of the citations, and the highest H-index (64). China ranked second in total number of articles, but seventh in citation frequency (1998) and ninth in H-index (21). The journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment had the highest number of publications. The author, Narod SA, has published the most papers in this field (30). The keyword "receptor" was mentioned the most, 1489 times, and the word "myeloid cell leukemia-1 (MCL-1)" was the latest hot spot by 2015. CONCLUSION Literature growth related to TNBC is expanding rapidly in recent years. The quality of the articles from China still requires improvement. Newest progress of the TNBC research may be released by the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment first. Narod SA, Gonzalez-Angulo AM, and Hortobagyi GN may be good candidates for collaborative research in this field. MCL-1 is an emerging topic that should be closely observed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Spinal tuberculosis is the most common form of skeletal tuberculosis. However, there were limited data to evaluate the trend of spinal tuberculosis research. This study aims to investigate the trend of spinal tuberculosis research and compare the contribution of research from different countries and authors. METHODS Spinal tuberculosis-related publications from 1994 to 2015 were retrieved from the Web of Science database. Excel 2013, GraphPad Prism 5, and VOSviewer software were used to analyze the search results for number of publications, cited frequency, H-index, and country contributions. RESULTS A total of 1558 papers were identified and were cited 16,152 times as of January 25, 2016. The United States accounted for 15.1% of the articles, 22.3% of the citations, and the highest H-index (33). China ranked third in total number of articles, fifth in citation frequency (815), and ranked seventh in H-index (13). The journal Spine (IF 2.297) had the highest number of publications. The author Jain A.K. has published the most papers in this field (20). The article titled "Tuberculosis of the spine: Controversies and a new challenge" was the most popular article and cited a total of 1138 times. The keyword "disease" was mentioned the most for 118 times and the word "bone fusion" was the latest hotspot by 2015. CONCLUSION Literature growth in spinal tuberculosis is slowly expanding. Although publications from China are increasing, the quality of the articles still requires improvements. Meanwhile, the United States continues to be the largest contributor in the field of spinal tuberculosis. According to our bibliometric study, bone fusion may be an emerging topic within spinal tuberculosis research and is something that should be closely observed.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present study was to analyze two distinct biomedical electronic databases for the 100 most-cited articles in the field of periodontology. METHODS Two electronic databases (Scopus [SCO] and Web of Science [WOS]) were used to retrieve lists of the 100 most-cited articles using appropriately-chosen keywords. The correlation between the number of citations and age of publication was evaluated statistically. RESULTS Sixty-three papers could be found in both lists. The mean number of citations in SCO was 476.7 ± 361.9 and 371.2 ± 249.7 in WOS. The mean age of publication in the SCO list was 21.4 ± 9.4 years and 18.6 ± 6.5 years in the WOS list. No correlation was found between age of publication and number of citations for both databases. CONCLUSIONS There is a lack of evidence of the correlation between age of publication and number of citations. The concordance between the two databases that were reviewed was relatively significant, even though the rankings of the most-cited articles are dependent on the number of journals covered by one database. The actual value of the number of citations to measure the quality of one article should be carefully evaluated.

Abstract
Background: Research in pleural diseases has traditionally been neglected but is now growing. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze scientific research trends on pleural effusions over the last decades. Method: We conducted a bibliometric analysis of the Scopus database from its inception to March 2016, searching for original articles and reviews on “pleural effusion” (key word). Journal, year of publication, number of citations, authors and their affiliations, and the Hirsch (H)-index for some of these variables were recorded and analyzed. Results: A total of 15 982 documents were retrieved, of which half have been published in the last 18 years and a quarter during the last 8 years. Chest ranked first regarding the number of documents on pleural effusions (both absolute number and yearly rate) and their scientific relevance (H-index of 76). The United States had contributed the most to pleural research productivity (23%). American pulmonologists Dr Richard Light and Dr Steven Sahn exhibited the highest number of papers (206 and 156, respectively) and author H-indexes (44 and 38, respectively). Conclusion: There is growing research activity in the field of pleural effusions, which has gained relevance and visibility in clinical respiratory journals. The United States is the leader in quantity and quality of research productivity in pleural medicine.
