Abstract
The reduction of the pulpal space following the deposition of secondary dentin is a radiographically visible morphological feature associated with aging. Currently, there is no reference morphological sample for the Northern Brazilian population when it comes to the radiographically visible dental features for age estimation. This study aimed to test an existing method for age estimation based on the canine pulp/tooth area (PTA) ratio and develop a population-specific equation. The sample consisted of 100 peri-apical radiographs of Brazilian males (n=46) and females (n=54) from the Northern geographic region. The age of the sampled participants was between 18 and 72 years (mean age=45.43±14.39years). The estimated age was obtained with the Cameriere's method. A statistically significant negative (r=-0.595) association was observed between the permanent canine PTA and the chronological age (P=0.0001). A population-specific equation was structured with a 4-fold (75%×25%) cross-validation, leading to a mean absolute error of 9.59years, and root mean square error of 11.66years (r2=0.363). This study provided evidence to support the use of Cameriere's pulp/tooth area ratio for the radiographic dental age estimation of Northern Brazilian adults, especially adjusted with a population-specific equation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the feasibility of using the pulp volume (Pv) to total volume (Tv) ratio (Pv:Tv), obtained from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of single-rooted teeth, for age estimation in a Brazilian population sample. METHODS After obtaining approval from the ethics committee, the study commenced by applying inclusion criteria to screen CBCT scans, resulting in a probability-based sample of participants aged 18 years and older (ranging from 18 to 82 years, with a mean age of 46.44 years). A total of 517 single-rooted teeth, including maxillary central incisors (CI), mandibular canines (C), and mandibular first premolars (FP), were chosen based on excellent agreement values (> 0.9). Pv and Tv measurements were conducted using semi-automatic segmentation with ITK-SNAP 3.8 software. Statistical analysis was performed using Jamovi software, with a significance level set at 5% (α = 0.05). RESULTS A strong negative correlation (r > -0.7) was observed between chronological age and the Pv:Tv ratio across all examined teeth. However, when conducting regression analysis with Pv:Tv data and chronological age as the independent variable, only the mandibular FP teeth exhibited a normal distribution. The resulting linear model demonstrated moderate predictive value (approximately 64%) in explaining the variance in chronological age, but caution should be exercised when interpreting these findings. CONCLUSIONS The method of measuring individual tooth volume using CBCT to estimate chronological age via Pv:Tv has been demonstrated as effective and reproducible within the Brazilian population sample.

Abstract
(1) Background/Objectives: Accurate determination of chronological age is crucial in legal dental identification. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of different formulas in estimating the age of a Brazilian subpopulation by analyzing the pulp/tooth ratio of the maxillary canine and mandibular second premolar in panoramic and periapical radiographs. (2) Methods: The sample consisted of panoramic and periapical radiographs of 247 individuals. The file of each radiograph was opened in the Adobe Photoshop CS4® program to outline and obtain values in pixels for calculating the pulp/tooth ratio. Statistical analysis was conducted using the SPSS program, with a significance level set at 5%. (3) Results: The interclass correlation coefficient demonstrated excellent intra-observer agreement (0.990-0.999). The determination coefficients (R2) suggested that only 30-35% of the actual age results could be explained by the pulp/tooth ratio. The smallest differences were observed with Cameriere's formula for the mandibular second premolar on panoramic radiographs (+4.1 years). The greatest differences were found with the formulas for the mandibular second premolar in panoramic radiographs of the Korean (+12.5 years) and Portuguese (-12.1 years) populations. (4) Conclusions: The equations employed showed little agreement between the actual age and the estimated age.

Abstract
The age estimation of an adult using methods accessible to the forensic routine is a goal pursued by forensic experts. Cameriere, Ferrante and Cingolani (2004) proposed the use of the pulp/tooth area ratio of canine teeth as a promising variable, but its reliability has shown conflicting results in the scientific literature. This article aimed to carry out a systematic review with meta-analysis to verify whether the pulp/tooth area ratio of canine teeth includes a variable that can be used alone to estimate dental age in adults. A systematic search was carried out in six databases using keywords related to the theme in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. The study selection process followed pre-established eligibility criteria. Assessments were carried out regarding risk of bias and publication bias of selected studies, and meta-analysis was carried out considering Pearson's correlation coefficient between pulp/tooth area ratio and chronological age as effect measure. Most selected studies showed low risk of bias; no publication bias was found when all studies were considered, and potential publication bias was found when outliers were removed. Despite the high heterogeneity among studies and the need for more research, it could be observed that the pulp/tooth area ratio has strong negative correlation with chronological age, and the pulp/tooth area ratio could be derived from both periapical radiographs and orthopantomographs. Therefore, it is suggested that there is scientific evidence that the pulp/tooth area ratio obtained from canine teeth is reliable for dental age estimation in adults.

Abstract
Dental radiographies have been used for many decades for estimating the chronological age, with a view to forensic identification, migration flow control, or assessment of dental development, among others. This study aims to analyse the current application of chronological age estimation methods from dental X-ray images in the last 6 years, involving a search for works in the Scopus and PubMed databases. Exclusion criteria were applied to discard off-topic studies and experiments which are not compliant with a minimum quality standard. The studies were grouped according to the applied methodology, the estimation target, and the age cohort used to evaluate the estimation performance. A set of performance metrics was used to ensure good comparability between the different proposed methodologies. A total of 613 unique studies were retrieved, of which 286 were selected according to the inclusion criteria. Notable tendencies to overestimation and underestimation were observed in some manual approaches for numeric age estimation, being especially notable in the case of Demirjian (overestimation) and Cameriere (underestimation). On the other hand, the automatic approaches based on deep learning techniques are scarcer, with only 17 studies published in this regard, but they showed a more balanced behaviour, with no tendency to overestimation or underestimation. From the analysis of the results, it can be concluded that traditional methods have been evaluated in a wide variety of population samples, ensuring good applicability in different ethnicities. On the other hand, fully automated methods were a turning point in terms of performance, cost, and adaptability to new populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess and compare age estimation on panoramic radiography using the Kvaal method and machine learning (ML). METHODS AND MATERIALS 554 panoramic radiographs were selected from a Brazilian practice. To estimate age using the Kvaal method, the following measurements were performed on the upper left central incisors and canines: tooth, pulp and root length; root and pulp width at three different levels: at the enamel-cementum junction (ECJ); midpoint between the enamel-cementum junction and; at the mid root level. For ML age estimation, radiomic, semantic and the radiomic-semantic attribute extractions were assessed. Nineteen semantic and 14 radiomic attributes and a single set of 33 semantic-radiomic attributes were extracted. Logistic Regression, Linear Regression, KNN, SVR, Decision Tree Reg, Random Forest Reg, Gradient Boost Reg e XG Boosting Reg were used for ML classification. For the Kvaal method, Mann-Whitney test, Spearman correlation coefficient, Student's t-test and linear regression with its respective coefficient of determination were used to estimate age and to assess data variability. RESULTS Mean absolute error (MAE) and standard error estimate (SEE) were assessed. For the Kvaal method, upper incisors presented higher precision than canines (R²: 0.335, SSE: 7.108). Males presented better MAE and SEE values (5.29,6.96) than females (5.69,7.37). The radiomic-semantic attributes presented superior precision (MAE: 4.77) than the radiomic and semantic (MAE: 5.23) attributes. The XG Boosting Reg classifier performed better than the other six assessed classifiers (MAE: 4.65). ML (MAE: 4.77 presented higher age estimation precision than the Kvaal method (MAE: 5.68). CONCLUSION The use of ML on panoramic radiographs can improve age estimation.

Abstract
Expert determination of the third molar maturity index (I3M) constitutes one of the most common approaches for dental age estimation. This work aimed to investigate the technical feasibility of creating a decision-making tool based on I3M to support expert decision-making. Methods: The dataset consisted of 456 images from France and Uganda. Two deep learning approaches (Mask R-CNN, U-Net) were compared on mandibular radiographs, leading to a two-part instance segmentation (apical and coronal). Then, two topological data analysis approaches were compared on the inferred mask: one with a deep learning component (TDA-DL), one without (TDA). Regarding mask inference, U-Net had a better accuracy (mean intersection over union metric (mIoU)), 91.2% compared to 83.8% for Mask R-CNN. The combination of U-Net with TDA or TDA-DL to compute the I3M score revealed satisfying results in comparison with a dental forensic expert. The mean ± SD absolute error was 0.04 ± 0.03 for TDA, and 0.06 ± 0.04 for TDA-DL. The Pearson correlation coefficient of the I3M scores between the expert and a U-Net model was 0.93 when combined with TDA and 0.89 with TDA-DL. This pilot study illustrates the potential feasibility to automate an I3M solution combining a deep learning and a topological approach, with 95% accuracy in comparison with an expert.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of the Kvaal method in determining the age of a Serbian population. In this retrospective descriptive study, 170 dental patients (age range 16–77 years) were included. The measurements of six types of teeth were performed on digital orthopantomography radiographs according to the Kvaal method. Statistical inter-observer and intra-observer reliabilities were calculated to evaluate the reproducibility of the measurements, as well as to examine the correlation between chronological age and measured values. The evaluation revealed a substantial difference (over 12 years) between chronological and estimated age. The P ratio had the strongest correlation with chronological age for the maxillary central (r = ±0.293) and lateral incisors (r = ±0.240), whereas the pulp/root width ratio at level A had the strongest correlation for the mandibular first premolars (r = ±0.270). The lowest SD values, for measurements on teeth 15/25 (SD = 125,787), had the most accurate correlation with age. Thus, we can conclude that the original Kvaal method is not applicable in the age estimation of the Serbian population. For future research, we suggest using cone beam computer tomography as a precise technology to evaluate the applicability of Kvaal and other methods for age estimation.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of the present study is to determine applicability of Cameriere's and Drusini's methods in Western Indian population. Methodology Panoramic radiographs of total 300 Gujarati individuals, equally divided into four study groups were studied by two investigators. The pulp/tooth area ratio (AR) were calculated for maxillary and mandibular canines and tooth coronal indexes (TCI) i.e., the ratio between coronal pulp cavity height and crown height were calculated for mandibular premolars and first and second molars. The acquired data were subjected to correlation and regression analysis and also inter and intraobserver reliability was obtained for both the investigators. Results The ARs and TCIs for all the respective teeth were significantly correlated with the age of the individuals. The individual regression formulae were derived for all the teeth and were then used separately to calculate the age. There was no statistically significant difference between the mean chronological age and mean calculated age for all the teeth.(P > 0.05). The mean absolute errors for all the teeth were <10 years. Conclusion The findings of this study prove the applicability of Cameriere's and Drusini's age estimation methods for Western Indian population. However, the weak correlation coefficients suggest the need for further studies to get more accurate results.
