Knowledge and use of the ICF in clinical practice by physiotherapists and occupational therapists of Minas Gerais

Specific ICF training is needed in clinical practice: ICF framework education is not enough

The use of a common language in interprofessional collaboration is essential. The World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) has been identified as a unifying framework for interprofessional collaboration and the identification of client needs. Higher education institutions (HEIs) offer ICF framework education to students but is it enough to enable graduated professionals to implement the ICF in clinical work? In our experience, the ICF education provided by HEIs does not meet the requirements of clinical practice, which might be due to gaps in teaching ICF to students (education) and specific requirements for teaching ICF to professionals already working in rehabilitation (training). This paper discusses the need for the ICF training in practice and ways to address it. Although many rehabilitation center professionals had previously received ICF education provided by the HEIs, the rehabilitation centers felt the need to develop their own practical training materials that could be applied to their own environment. Overall, 18 different ICF-based materials were developed during the Erasmus+ project called INPRO to promote person-centered and interprofessional practice in the rehabilitation centers. The practical training using real cases was considered valuable. It could be further developed in cooperation with HEIs and vice versa. It could also be used to teach students, i.e., future colleagues. To deepen and broaden the integration of the different materials based on the ICF, it is important to continue the interactive discussion between HEIs and clinical practice, and between management and its staff.

The Knowledge and Use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Framework in Athletic Training

In 2015, the Strategic Alliance adopted the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) as the disablement model framework for delivery of and communication about patient care in athletic training. The purpose of this study was to examine athletic trainers' familiarity, knowledge, application, and implementation of the ICF framework. We used a cross-sectional online survey with 185 athletic trainers (age = 35 ± 9 y), which included 32 items focused on familiarity, knowledge, application, and implementation of the ICF framework. Most participants (n = 96, 51.9%) reported never learning about the ICF framework. During the knowledge assessment, participants scored 4.3 ± 2.7 out of 8, which is equivalent to 53.7%. For the sorting assessment, participants scored 10.9 ± 3.9 out of 18, which is equivalent to 60.5%. On the implementation matrix, the most frequently reported ICF tasks elicited by the athletic trainers included neuromusculoskeletal and movement, structure related to movement, and mobility. The most common 'never elicited' ICF tasks included voice and speech, sexual orientation, and structures related to genitourinary and reproductive system. Deficits related to the ICF framework exist. Athletic trainers reported low implementation across all ICF categories. The decision to not elicit information on these areas of health may reduce the ability to provide patient-centered healthcare.

Knowledge and use of the International Classification of Functioning, disability and health (ICF) and ICF Core Sets for musculoskeletal conditions among saudi physical therapists

BACKGROUND

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) provides a coherent biopsychosocial view of health states. The ICF Core Sets were developed to facilitate and encourage the use of the ICF in clinical practice and research.

OBJECTIVE

To examine the level of knowledge and use of the ICF and ICF Core Sets for musculoskeletal conditions among Saudi physical therapists.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

METHOD

We approached Saudi physical therapists (PTs) involved in managing patients with musculoskeletal conditions. Data were collected through an electronic survey consisting of multiple-choice questions related to the knowledge of the ICF, general ICF Core Sets and ICF Core Sets for musculoskeletal conditions.

RESULTS

A total of 203 PTs participated in this study. Seventy percent of PTs knew about the meaning of ICF, but only 33% recognized aspects of the ICF. For the osteoarthritis (OA) ICF Core Set, 71.9% had poor knowledge, and for the low back pain (LBP) ICF Core Set, 61.8% had poor knowledge.

CONCLUSIONS

The Saudi PTs surveyed in this study had a good level of knowledge about the meaning of the ICF; however, this knowledge appeared to be limited when they were asked about aspects of the ICF. They had poor knowledge of musculoskeletal ICF Core Sets but seemed to be more familiar with the LBP ICF Core Set compared to the OA ICF Core Set.

Analysis of Informative Content on Cerebral Palsy Presented in Brazilian-Portuguese YouTube Videos

Aims: To describe the characteristics of the most accessed YouTube videos in Brazilian-Portuguese on cerebral palsy (CP), and to analyze content of informational videos about this topic.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Searching on YouTube website was conducted by two independent examiners between November and December 2019, using the keywords "Paralisia Cerebral" sorted by videos' number of views. Videos that did not present content related to CP or duplicate videos were excluded. The interaction parameters and content characteristics of the included videos were extracted. To access the trustworthiness and quality of informational videos, the modified Discern checklist and the Global Quality Score was used.Results: Following the eligibility criteria 90 videos were included. Fifty-three (53) were classified as experiential videos and 37 as informational videos. Informational videos presented multi-topics about different aspects of CP. This group of videos presented moderate trustworthiness due to the lack of scientific evidence content. Informational videos had good quality and generally good flow.Conclusion: YouTube presented a large number of videos about CP in Brazilian-Portuguese. Informational videos are useful for patients and healthcare providers; however, it is necessary to included information about scientific evidence, as a strategy to facilitate and promote knowledge translation.

Sistematização de instrumentos de avaliação para os dois primeiros anos de vida de bebês típicos ou em risco conforme o modelo da CIF

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar instrumentos de avaliação do desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor (DNPM) de crianças de 0 a 2 anos, de baixo custo, que possam ser usados no contexto de creche e/ou ambiente clínico em programas de intervenção precoce, sistematizando esses instrumentos conforme o modelo biopsicossocial da Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde (CIF). Foram selecionados instrumentos de avaliação do DNPM com tradução ou adaptação para o Brasil. Para isso os domínios da CIF foram escolhidos triangulando o checklist da própria CIF-CJ, core set de estimulação precoce e a última versão da CIF, para busca na literatura de instrumentos de avaliação. A sistematização das categorias selecionadas da CIF foi realizada por dois fisioterapeutas, e um terceiro para itens discordantes. As escalas que responderam aos critérios foram: Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS), Teste de Triagem de Denver II, Inventário Pediátrico sobre Qualidade de Vida (PedSQl®), Affordance in the Home Environment for Motor Development-Infant Scale (AHEMD-IS) e vínculo mãe-bebê. Mesmo com essas escalas, verificou-se a necessidade de um questionário de anamnese complementar para o responsável, dados da Caderneta de Saúde da Criança e de um questionário socioeconômico da Associação Brasileira de Empresas de Pesquisa para o Brasil (ABEP). Essa sistematização está disponível no apêndice, e procura facilitar o olhar ampliado do fisioterapeuta ou profissional da educação com abrangência biopsicossocial dos bebês, além de possibilitar a identificação de riscos de forma precoce e subsidiar ações de promoção e intervenção em diferentes contextos.

Zika Virus After Emergency Response: Can the ICF Guide Rehabilitation of Children With Microcephaly?

The outbreak of Zika in Brazil almost 3 years ago had harmful medical, financial, and social consequences for children and their families. It also significantly increased the statistics of Brazilian children with disabilities being followed up in rehabilitation centers. Actions promoting the use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework are encouraged in view of the complex health needs identified in this population, which cover all areas of functioning, and gain special relevance when it comes to a vulnerable context. This perspective article discusses the challenges related to the implementation of the ICF in rehabilitation services for children with congenital syndrome.

Use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health in Speech-Language-Hearing Therapy: an integrative literature review

ABSTRACT Purpose: to carry out an integrative review of literature regarding the use of the ICF in Speech-Language-Hearing Therapy. Methods: a search was conducted on both national and international databases, for articles published between 2008 and 2018, considering the following descriptors in Portuguese, English and Spanish: “International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health”, “Speech-Language-Hearing”, and “Speech Therapy”. Duplicated articles, as well as those introducing new ICF-based protocols and studies whose theme didn’t refer exclusively to speech-language-hearing practices were excluded. Results: 36 articles were found, 9 of which met the inclusion criteria. The articles were categorized according to speech-language-hearing subareas (most belonging to the subarea of language), and to types of study (most being case studies). Conclusion: studies point out that the ICF can contribute to the development of unique therapy projects in a broader approach to health in the speech-language-hearing clinic. However, it has been perceived the need for more researches on the theme with applicability to the other fields of knowledge in speech-language-hearing sciences.
