Loneliness in senescence and its relationship with depressive symptoms: an integrative review

Sex differences in the psychometric properties of the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) Scale in older Filipinos

The literature has yet to fully account for sex differences in the symptomatology and measurement of depressive symptoms, especially in developing settings like the Philippines. Thus, we established the factor structure and assessed the reliability of the 11-item version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) Scale for assessing depressive symptoms in older Filipino men and women. Using cross-sectional data from 5,209 community-dwelling Filipinos aged 60 and above from a nationally representative survey, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and methods in Item Response Theory (IRT) were applied to provide complementary insights into the properties of the scale and its individual items. CFA supported the multidimensionality of the scale. The scale is also sex-invariant, but the relationship between the subfactors and the higher-order factor may differ between men and women. In addition, findings from IRT analysis confirmed the overall utility of the CES-D scale, but positively stated items were found to be internally inconsistent with the rest of the scale. The scale is desirably informative for assessing more severe symptoms, although sex differences were found in the precision of individual items. In general, the 11-item CES-D Scale is an adequate multidimensional tool for assessing moderate to severe depressive symptoms in the older population, especially in older men.

Associação entre Atividade Física e Aspectos Emocionais de Idosos durante a Pandemia da Covid-19

Para conhecer repercussões da pandemia da covid-19, investigamos a associação entre atividade física e aspectos emocionais de idosos. Para isso, 101 pessoas com 60 anos ou mais responderam a um questionário on-line, via Google Forms. Identificamos que 45,5% dos entrevistados pioraram o desempenho físico, enquanto 11% relataram melhora da aptidão física durante a pandemia. Os exercícios físicos mais praticados foram caminhada (54,5%) e musculação (21,8%). Sobre a mobilidade, as atividades mais frequentes foram ir ao mercado (76,2%), caminhar na vizinhança (64,4%) e sair para tomar sol (61,4%). O Modelo Linear Generalizado mostrou que a piora do desempenho físico foi associada aos níveis mais altos de sofrimento emocional (b=4,35; IC 95%: 1,31-7,11; p=0,003). Os nossos resultados indicam que a melhora do desempenho físico gera repercussões positivas sobre aspectos emocionais de idosos, reforçando a importância da prática regular de exercícios físicos, mesmo em um período de pandemia.

How much time of sedentary behavior is associated with depressive symptoms in community-dwelling older adults in southern Brazil?

AIMS

Identify sedentary behavior (SB) cut-off points to screen for depressive symptoms in older adults and verify the association between these conditions.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey of 308 community-dwelling older adults was conducted. The outcome was the presence of depressive symptoms (≥6 points on the Geriatric Depression Scale-15). The exposure was SB using the self-reported time on a weekday and weekend (International Physical Activity Questionnaire). The cut-off points for SB categorization were determined by the receiver operating characteristic curve and multivariate logistic regression to verify the association.

RESULTS

Older adults who spent ≥4.5 hours/day in SB (sensitivity = 48.8%; specificity = 67.8%) were 1.81 times more likely (95%CI: 1.03;3.15) to have depressive symptoms compared to those who stayed for shorter periods.

CONCLUSIONS

There was an association between SB and depressive symptoms; therefore, older adults must have SB <4.5 hours/day to reduce the chances of developing depressive symptoms.

The impact of the social isolation in elderly Brazilian mental health (anxiety and depression) during the COVID-19 pandemic

The impact of social isolation in the pandemic context on elderly Brazilian mental health is little known, especially about the occurrence of depressive symptoms. In this study, we evaluated elderly people undergoing social isolation in order to identify factors associated with depression and which of these are more important to characterize elderly Brazilians with depression. In a cross-sectional, exploratory, and analytical study of a quantitative nature, the mental profile of elderly individuals subjected to social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic period was used. A total of 450 participants was divided into normal and depressive groups, and a form covering sociodemographic data, opinions/perceptions about the pandemic, and a Reduced Geriatric Depression Scale was used to assess participants' mental health. To assess the statistical significance between the variables, chi-square test was applied, considering the p-value <0.05. The effect size was analyzed to identify the magnitude of the difference between groups. To identify the most important characteristics to define the groups Multilayer Perceptron algorithm were applied. We found that elderly people with a depressive profile are (in Multilayer Perceptron rank order) (1) showing signs of anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic, (2) of low education, (3) being divorced, (4) having more than one mental disorder, (5) reading, watching, or listening to information about COVID-19, and (6) being previously diagnosed with depression. In conclusion, elderly Brazilians in social isolation tend to develop depressive disorders during quarantine. Thus, we can consider that the pandemic requires effective and safe gerontological care and monitoring, especially with regard to mental health.
