Analysis of signs and symptoms in confirmed cases of severe dengue among children aged 0 to 10 years old

OBJECTIVE

The prevalent symptoms of severe dengue in pediatric patients are divided into three subgroups: severe plasma leakage, severe bleeding, and severe organ damage. In addition, the seasonal patterns of the disease and the outcomes of cure or death from dengue were evaluated.

METHODS

An epidemiological, observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted with data from the Notifiable Disease Information System (SINAN - Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação and DATASUS - Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde) of the Ministry of Health from 2019 to 2020.

RESULTS

During the study period, 1,857 cases of severe dengue were observed in the pediatric age group, with the most common symptoms being respiratory failure, melena, hematemesis, and altered level of consciousness. The total proportion of patients hospitalized for severe dengue was 89.6%, and 51.2% of these patients died, corroborating the importance of early detection of the disease.

CONCLUSION

Severe dengue is more prevalent during the seasonal period, with hot and humid characteristics owing to the mechanism involved in the viral cycle. The most prevalent symptoms of severe dengue in pediatric patients were respiratory failure alone, gastrointestinal bleeding, and altered level of consciousness. It is important to identify signs of severity for early intervention and a better prognosis, considering that death is closely related to a delayed diagnosis.

Qualidade dos dados, oportunidade e representatividade do sistema de vigilância epidemiológica da dengue em Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, 2012-2017

Objetivo: avaliar a qualidade dos dados, a oportunidade e a representatividade do sistema de vigilância epidemiológica da dengue em Natal. Métodos: Pesquisa avaliativa, com dados dos casos suspeitos ou confirmados de dengue notificados no Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (Sinan), de 2012 a 2017. Resultados: Foram notificados 49.655 casos no período. A completude geral e a consistência foram excelentes, variando de 94,8% a 100,0% e de 91,1% a 100,0% respectivamente. A completude foi regular para as variáveis evolução do caso, raça/cor da pele e escolaridade. O sistema foi considerado oportuno, com média de 3,4 a 6,8 dias entre o início dos sintomas e a notificação. Foi considerado representativo devido a elevada correlação entre números de internações por dengue obtidos no Sinan e no Sistema de Informações Hospitalares. Conclusão: O sistema de vigilância da dengue foi considerado completo, consistente, oportuno e representativo, configurando-se importante para o direcionamento de ações de vigilância.

Variation in temephos resistance in field populations of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) in the State of Sergipe, Northeast Brazil

INTRODUCTION

The organophosphate temephos was first used in Brazil in the 1960s for the control of Aedes aegypti. Because of its extensive and longstanding use worldwide, selection for mosquito populations resistant to the chemical has been observed not only in different regions of Brazil but also in several parts of the world. The objective of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility of Ae. aegypti to the organophosphate temephos, a larvicide used in vector control activities in Sergipe/Northeast Brazil.

METHODS

This study included mosquito populations from seven municipalities of Sergipe and was carried out from October 2010 to August 2011. Qualitative bioassays of diagnostic dose and dose responses were performed. The resistance ratio was calculated based on lethal concentrations for mosquitoes of the susceptible Rockefeller strain.

RESULTS

All populations were classified as resistant to temephos. The resistance ratio ranged from 22.2 to 297.9, the lowest being seen in Aracaju, a coastal area of the state, and the highest in Pinhão, a semi-arid region, 96.6km from Aracaju.

CONCLUSIONS

High levels of temephos resistance were observed in the Ae. aegypti populations of Sergipe. The variation between regions indicates that there have been different regimes of insecticide use and also points to the potential of small cities to generate and spread insecticide resistance.
