Commuting and work-related accidents among employed Brazilians, National Survey of Health 2013 and 2019

Objective:

To analyze the prevalence of work-related accidents, according to sociodemographic and occupational variables, in 2013 and 2019.

Methods:

Cross-sectional study using data from the National Survey of Health (PNS) 2013 and 2019. Typical work accidents (WA), commuting accidents (CA), and Total Work Accidents (TWA) were evaluated. Prevalence values and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) of TWA in 2013 and 2019 were estimated according to the explanatory variables and for Federative Units and capitals. In 2019, the prevalence and 95%CI according to explanatory variables were estimated using prevalence ratios (PR), both crude and adjusted for sex and age group.

Results:

TWA prevalence decreased from 4.96% (95%CI 4.55–5.38) in 2013 to 4.13% (95%CI 3.80–4.46) in 2019. In 2013, the state of Pará prevailed in TWA, and the state of Mato Grosso in 2019. The prevalence of WA and CA in 2019 were: 2.64% (95%CI 2.37–2.91) and 1.60% (95%CI 1.40–1.80). In 2019, the prevalence for TWA were higher for men (PR: 1.92; 95%CI 1.62–2.27); in the 18-29 age group (PR: 2.71; 95%CI 1.99–3.68); people with elementary school and some high school (PR: 2.09; 95%CI 1.57–2.78); and Black individuals (PR: 1.43; 95%CI 1.12–1.84). People without formal employment contract had a lower prevalence of TWA (PR: 0.77; 95%CI 0.66–0.90). WA was higher in rural areas (PR: 1.32; 95%CI 1.09–1.60).

Conclusion:

There was a reduction in TWA between 2013 and 2019. Men, young people, Black people, and individuals with lower level of education, residents in rural areas had higher prevalence of WA in 2019, demonstrating a relationship between health-disease-accident processes.

Incidence and time trend of occupational accidents in the textile and clothing industry: analysis of Santa Catarina, Brazil, between 2008 and 2017

OBJECTIVE

To estimate the incidence and time trend of typical work accidents in the textile and clothing industry in Santa Catarina from 2008 to 2017.

METHODS

This was a retrospective epidemiological study based on data from the Annual Social Information Report (RAIS). The time trend was analyzed by calculating the average annual change and logistic regression.

RESULTS

There was a downward trend in the incidence of occupational accidents in Santa Catarina during the period studied (8.8%). The highest incidence occurred in 2008 among men (12.6%), workers aged between 40 and 49 years (6.7%), black people (7.4%), people with less than 12 years of education (5.0%), with an average income of 3 to 7 minimum wages (7.0%), with up to 4 years of employment (6.9%), workers in the manufacture of textile products (10, 3%), medium-sized establishments (that is, between 100 and 499 workers; 7.9%) and in the regions of Greater Florianópolis (7.0%) and Vale do Itajaí (6.8%).

CONCLUSIONS

The risk for typical occupational accidents dropped significantly over the period studied. However, future studies are needed to analyze new relationships that may point to other associated factors. It is hoped that this study can contribute to support measures for the prevention, promotion, protection and rehabilitation of the health of workers in this production sector.

Self-reported occupational accidents among Brazil's adult population based on data from the 2013 National Health Survey

Objective:

to provide an overview of occupational accidents among Brazil's adult population.

Methods:

descriptive study using data from the 2013 National Health Survey.

Results:

A total of 4.9 million workers mentioned having suffered some kind of work-related accident, which is equivalent to 3.4% (CI95% 4.6-5.6) of Brazil's adult population. Prevalence rates were higher among men, young adults aged between 18 and 39 years, and black people and in the North Region of the country. Prevalence was highest in the State of Para and lowest in the State of Rio de Janeiro State. Around one third of all accidents were commuting accidents, 50.4% (CI95% 45.3-55.5) of people who had suffered an occupational accident were prevented from carrying out some kind of routine activity due to the accident, 8.8% (CI95% 6.4-11.2) were hospitalized and 19% (CI95% 15.3-22.7) had sequelae resulting from occupational accidents.

Conclusion:

the data provided by the National Health Survey comprises an unprecedented and invaluable source of information on these issues in Brazil. The results of the survey confirm that occupational accidents are underreported, since official figures do not cover individuals working in the informal sector.

Emergency room visits for work-related injuries: characteristics and associated factors - capitals and the Federal District, Brazil, 2011

Work-related injuries, often classified as occupational injuries (OI), stand out among visits due to external causes (accidents and violence) in health services. To describe the characteristics and factors associated with emergency room visits for OI, a cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the Survey of Violence and Injuries in Emergency Services (VIVA Inquérito 2011) in 24 state capitals and the Federal District. The prevalence of treatment for OI and prevalence ratios (PR) with confidence intervals of 95% (95%CI) were calculated. There were 29,463 emergency room visits due to accidental injuries in the population above 18 years of age. The prevalence of OI was 33.4% and was positively and significantly associated with the male gender, age 30-59 years old, industrial workers, agricultural sector or repair and maintenance services. The occurrence of OI was significantly higher in attendance for objects falling on people (PR = 3.37, 95% CI 2.80 to 4.05) and injuries due to perforating object (PR = 3.01, 95% CI 2.50-3.65). The results support the surveillance of external causes and direct public policies to promote occupational health.

Health care costs and the socioeconomic consequences of work injuries in Brazil: a longitudinal study

Work injuries are a worldwide public health problem but little is known about their socioeconomic impact. This prospective longitudinal study estimates the direct health care costs and socioeconomic consequences of work injuries for 406 workers identified in the emergency departments of the two largest public hospitals in Salvador, Brazil, from June through September 2005. After hospital discharge workers were followed up monthly until their return to work. Most insured workers were unaware of their rights or of how to obtain insurance benefits (81.6%). Approximately half the cases suffered loss of earnings, and women were more frequently dismissed than men. The most frequently reported family consequences were: need for a family member to act as a caregiver and difficulties with daily expenses. Total costs were US$40,077.00 but individual costs varied widely, according to injury severity. Out-of-pocket costs accounted for the highest proportion of total costs (50.5%) and increased with severity (57.6%). Most out-of-pocket costs were related to transport and purchasing medicines and other wound care products. The second largest contribution (40.6%) came from the public National Health System - SUS. Employer participation was negligible. Health care funding must be discussed to alleviate the economic burden of work injuries on workers.

Atendimentos de emergência a vítimas de violências e acidentes: diferenças no perfil epidemiológico entre o setor público e o privado. VIVA - Campinas/SP, 2009

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar as diferenças no perfil dos atendimentos de emergência por causas externas, entre as unidades de saúde públicas/conveniadas ao SUS e as privadas. Com dados do VIVA-Campinas 2009, foi verificada a associação entre natureza do serviço de saúde e características das vítimas, evento e atendimento usando teste qui-quadrado. A partir da regressão de Poisson, foram estimadas as razões entre a proporção de atendimentos da rede pública e da privada. O setor público respondeu por 67,8% dos atendimentos na amostra de 1094 vítimas. Acidentes de transportes, acidentes com animais e agressões foram 2 vezes mais frequentes nas unidades públicas; já choques contra objeto e entorses foram 75% e 2,7 vezes superiores nas privadas. Traumatismos crânio-encefálicos/politraumatismos e cortes/lacerações foram 3,8 vezes e 61% mais frequentes no setor público, enquanto ocorrências sem lesão física, com luxações/entorses ou fraturas predominaram no privado. Vítimas com lesões na cabeça e em múltiplos órgãos, ocorrências em vias públicas, eventos relacionados ao trabalho, uso de transportes coletivos e SAMU/resgate/ambulâncias prevaleceram na rede pública. O estudo, ao apontar significativas diferenças entre os eventos atendidos na rede pública e privada, pode contribuir na organização da assistência à saúde.
