Common mental disorders in adolescents: a population based cross-sectional study

Prevalence of common mental disorders and associated factors among adults living in Harari regional state, eastern Ethiopia: a community based cross-sectional study

Background

Common mental disorders are highly prevalent in the population, affecting people across all regions of the world. In Ethiopia, mental disorders are the leading non-communicable disorders. World Health Organization (WHO) report shows that 4,480,113 (4.7%) and 3,139,003 (3.3%) people in Ethiopia are estimated to suffer from depression and anxiety, respectively. However, there are only limited studies conducted on common mental disorders in Africa including Ethiopia. Even if there was a previous study conducted among Harari regional state residents 7 years back, nowadays there are many possible factors that could increase the prevalence of common mental disorders in the community like the novel coronavirus pandemic, ethnic war, and current socio-economic crises in Ethiopia.

Objective

To assess the prevalence of common mental disorders and associated factors among adult residents of Harari regional state, eastern Ethiopia.

Methods

A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 1 to March 30, 2022. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select 1,192 study participants. Data were collected by interviewer-administered structured and semi-structured questionnaires. A common mental disorder was assessed by the Self-Reporting Questionnaire of 20-Item (SRQ-20) questionnaire. Data were entered into Epi Data version 3.2 and exported to Stata Version 16 for analysis. The multivariable binary logistic regression analysis with a 95% confidence interval and p < 0.05 was used to identify factors associated with common mental disorders.

Result

From a total of 1,192 eligible participants, 1,168 responded to this survey, giving a response rate of 97.98%. The prevalence of common mental disorders among adults in the Harari Region of this study was 21.31% (95% CI, 18.8-23.60). Being female with Adjusted Odds Ratios (AOR = 1.31, 95%CI, 1.09-2.09), single (AOR = 2.03, 95%CI, 1.37-3.01), divorced (AOR = 3.06, 95%CI, 1.97-4.76), widowed (AOR = 1.79, 95%CI, 1.23-3.26), unemployed (AOR = 1.97, 95%CI, 1.18-3.31), having family history of mental illness (AOR = 3.17, 95%CI, 1.54-6.96) and age greater or equal to 55 years (AOR = 105, 95%CI, 1.69-3.54) were statistically associated with common mental disorders.

Conclusion

The prevalence of common mental disorder in the study area was sharply increased. Being female, single, divorced, widowed, family history of mental illness, being unemployed and age greater or equal to 55 years old were statistically positively associated with common mental disorder. Considering these determinants, screening, early identification, and providing appropriate intervention for common mental disorders in the community should be of great concern.

Body image as a global mental health concern

Body image concerns related to weight or other dimensions of appearance are now prevalent on a global scale. This paper reviews the theoretical frameworks that account for the global similarities and regional differences in rates and presentation of body image concerns, as well as reviewing the extant data. Given the harmful consequences of body image concerns in terms of mental and physical health, their global burden is high. Interventions to mitigate these concerns at the individual and systemic level are warranted.

The role of family meal frequency in common mental disorders in children and adolescents over eight months of follow-up

OBJECTIVE

This study evaluated the influence of family meal frequency on the occurrence of common mental disorders (CMD) in children and adolescents over eight months of follow-up.

DESIGN

Data from this longitudinal study were derived from the PAAPAS-Parents, Students, Community Health Agents, and Teachers for Healthy Eating-community trial. CMD were evaluated using the General Health Questionnaire. Frequency of family meals (breakfast and dinner) was categorized as "breakfast and dinner regularly with the family", "at least breakfast or dinner regularly with the family", and "does not have any meal regularly with the family." The effect of family meal frequency on CMD was analyzed using generalized estimation equations with log-binomial models for repeated measures.

SETTING

This study was conducted in public schools (N = 18) of Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016.

PARTICIPANTS

Children (aged 9-11 years) and adolescents (aged 12-17 years) from the fifth and sixth grades (N = 2,743).

RESULTS

These findings suggested that regular family meals were a protective factor for mental health. The adjusted relative risk of CMD was 0.75 (95% confidence interval = 0.69-0.83) for those who had two family meals regularly and 0.87 (95% confidence interval = 0.77-0.97) for those who had only one regular family meal, compared to students who had no regular family meals.

CONCLUSIONS

Potential strategies that educate and encourage families about the mental health benefits of eating regular meals together must be explored and implemented.

Self-perceived body image and body satisfaction of adolescents

Abstract Objectives: to evaluate self-perceived body image and body satisfaction of adolescents and their associated factors. Methods: across-sectional study carried out with 200 adolescents from a non-govern-mental organization of Campinas-SP. Self-perceived body image was assessed using a scale of silhouettes and body satisfaction by body areas. Association between sociodemographic and anthropometric data and body image and satisfaction were assessed by logistic regres-sion. Results: seventy percent of normal weight boys and 88% of girls wrongly perceived their nutritional status according to the objective standards. The prevalence of body dissatisfac-tion was 76.5%. Twenty-two percent of adolescents reported dissatisfaction with their body shape. Self-perceived body image was associated with nutritional status (OR= 0.25; CI95%=0.09-0.73), abdominal obesity (Waist/Height ratio- WHR) (OR=26.57; CI95%=3.98-177.18), and gender (OR=2.65; CI95%=1.16-6.05). Conclusions: we identified an important distortion and dissatisfaction with body shape. Girls, overweight/obese adolescents and those with abdominal obesity have more chance to this condition. These findings can subsidize actions that deal with the issue of acceptance of self-image, preventing more serious disorders that may directly affect the health of young-sters.

Common Mental Disorders and Contemporary Factors: 1982 Birth Cohort

OBJECTIVE

To describe the association between common mental disorders and socio-demographic variables, smoking habits and stressful events among the 30-year-old members of a 1982 cohort.

METHOD

Mental disorder was analyzed by the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). Poisson regression was used to analyze the unadjusted and adjusted associations.

RESULTS

Low level of education and stressful events increased the prevalence of mental disorders for both genders. Lower income for women and unemployment for men also remained associated with CMD.

CONCLUSION

It was possible to describe the association between contemporary factors and mental disorders in a young population, to which prevention and control measures, through public policies proposed to the areas of Primary Care, Mental Health and Education, can represent a better quality of life and health.

Gender differences in the impact of sleep duration on common mental disorders in school students

BACKGROUND

Common mental disorders (CMD) in children and adolescents can be initial and non-specific manifestations of more serious mental diseases and often persist into adulthood. Therefore, early detection is important, as is the identification of the factors that impact development. Insufficient sleep represents one of the most common and potentially remediable risks to mental health in children and adolescents for whom chronic sleep loss has become normal. This study aims to investigate the influence of sleep duration on CMD in schoolchildren and adolescents.

METHODS

The data for this longitudinal study were derived from the community trial Parents, Students, Community Health Agents and Teachers for Healthy Eating (PAAPAS) in 2016 (N = 2743), with fifth and sixth graders from 18 public schools of Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. CMD were assessed by the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) at baseline and at a 9-month follow-up. Sleep duration was evaluated at baseline and was categorized as short, adequate or long according to age group. The effect of sleep duration on common mental disorders was analysed by sex using linear mixed-effects models.

RESULTS

At baseline, the frequency of CMD was 33.2% and was higher in boys than in girls and higher among students with short sleep duration. There was an increase in the CMD score over time among girls with short sleep duration (p < 0.01). Among boys, a similar trajectory of the CMD score was observed in the subgroups with short and long sleep duration, but there was a significant reduction in the subgroup with long sleep duration (p = 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Changes in common mental disorder patterns differ according to sex, and short sleep duration seems to be problematic for students' mental health. The promotion of health strategies that involve the family and school environment, such as later school hours, could help change this scenario.

Common mental disorders and socioeconomic status in adolescents of ERICA

INTRODUCTION

Adolescence is a stage of great social, family and emotional demands, and the literature has related common mental disorder (CMD) with poor living conditions.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the relationship between CMD and socioeconomic status in Brazilian adolescents aged 12 to 17 years.

METHOD

This is a cross-sectional study with data from the Study of Cardiovascular Risk in Adolescents (ERICA - Estudo de Riscos Cardiovasculares em Adolescentes). The outcome was CMD and the exposure was socioeconomic status assessed by race/skin color, maternal schooling, resident/room relationship, type of school, existence of maid and bathroom at home, and work activity. For the calculation of prevalence, the survey mode was used and, in the multivariate analysis, logistic regression with p < 5%, as well as the 95% confidence interval.

RESULTS

The prevalence of CMD in girls was 23.3%, and in boys, 11.1%. The variables associated with CMD in girls were age between 15 and 17 years (OR = 1.34; 1.17-1.51), studying in private school (OR = 1.13; 1.01-1.27), having a housemaid (OR = 1.15; 1.00-1.34) and, as a protective factor, unpaid work (OR = 0.64; 0.55-0.75). Boys also had a higher chance of CMD in the highest age group (OR = 1.42; 1.18-1.71) and when they had a housemaid (OR = 1.26; 1.02-1.57), whereas unpaid work decreased this chance (OR = 0.79; 0.67-0.95).

CONCLUSION

Socioeconomic variables that were associated with CMD were suggestive of higher economic class, whereas unpaid work favored the mental health of adolescents, results contrary to the literature on socioeconomic status and CMD.

Self-perceived body image, dissatisfaction with body weight and nutritional status of Brazilian adolescents: a nationwide study

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the agreement and risk factors for underestimation and overestimation between nutritional status and self-perceived body image and to assess the prevalence and associated factors for dissatisfaction with body weight among Brazilian adolescents.

METHODS

Students aged 12-17 years participating in the Study of Cardiovascular Risk in Adolescents ("ERICA"), a multicenter, cross-sectional, school-based country-wide study, were included (n=71,740). Variables assessed as covariates were sex, age, skin color, socioeconomic status, and common mental disorders (screened by the General Health Questionnaire, GHQ-12). Multinomial logistic regression was used to explore the association between covariates and combinations between self-perceived body image and body mass index (agreement, underestimation and overestimation). The associations between dissatisfaction with body weight and exposure variables were investigated using multivariable Poisson regression models.

RESULTS

Approximately 66% students rightly matched their body mass index with self-perceived weight (kappa coefficient was 0.38 for boys and 0.35 for girls). Agreement was higher among younger students and adolescents from low income households. Male sex, older age, and GHQ-12 score ≥3 were associated with weight overestimation. Prevalence of dissatisfaction with body weight was 45.0% (95% CI: 44.0-46.0), and higher among girls, older adolescents, those with underweight or overweight/obesity, as well as those who were physically inactive and with GHQ-12 ≥3.

CONCLUSIONS

Most of the sample rightly self-perceived their body image according to body mass index. Students with body image misperception and those dissatisfied with their weight were more likely to present a positive screening for common mental disorders.

Exposição ao aleitamento materno e transtornos mentais comuns na adolescência

Resumo: O objetivo foi avaliar o efeito da exposição e do tempo de exposição ao aleitamento materno na ocorrência de transtornos mentais comuns (TMC) entre adolescentes escolares brasileiros. Este trabalho analisou dados do Estudo de Riscos Cardiovasculares em Adolescentes (ERICA), avaliando aqueles que tiveram o questionário referente ao aleitamento materno respondido pelos pais ou responsáveis. A presença de TMC foi identificada pelo General Health Questionnaire, versão 12 itens (GHQ-12), considerando-se dois pontos de corte (escores ≥ 3 e ≥ 5). As associações foram testadas em análises bivariadas e por meio de modelos de regressão logística múltipla, com ajustes por variáveis potenciais de confusão. Dentre os 41.723 adolescentes avaliados, a maioria foi composta por estudantes do sexo feminino (54,6%), que tinham idades entre 12 e 15 anos (71%), estudavam em escolas públicas (83,1%), residiam na Região Sudeste (51,9%) e eram das classes econômicas B (53,8%) e C (34,1%). Cerca de metade das mães dos adolescentes não tinha o ensino médio completo (51,7%). O grupo de adolescentes com mais de seis meses de aleitamento materno (51,8%) apresentou uma menor prevalência de TMC para os dois pontos de corte do GHQ-12 avaliados, quando comparado com o grupo que não recebeu aleitamento materno ou que o recebeu por período ≤ 1 mês (RI = 0,82; IC95%:0,69-0,97 e RI = 0,74; IC95%: 0,59-0,91 para 3 e 5 pontos, respectivamente). O aleitamento materno prolongado parece desempenhar um papel protetor para a ocorrência de TMC na adolescência.

Smoking, alcohol consumption and mental health: Data from the Brazilian study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA)

Introduction

Previous researches have indicated a strong association of alcohol and tobacco use with psychiatric disorders, but the relationship with depression and anxiety symptoms is still uncertain. We investigated the association of psychological distress and alcohol consumption, tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) among adolescents in a developing country.

Methods

The authors evaluated 73,399 individuals (12–17 years) who participated in the Cardiovascular Risks Study in Adolescents (ERICA), a cross-sectional, national and school-based study, carried out in 124 Brazilian municipalities. The variables considered were alcoholic beverages (experimentation, consumption in the previous month and frequency of use) and smoking (experimentation, current smoking habits, frequent smoking and SHS exposure). Psychological distress was defined as a score ≥ 3 points in GHQ-12. Analyses included multiple logistic regression modeling.

Results

The frequency of individuals with psychological distress was higher in the group who smoked for at least 7 consecutive days (53.3% vs 31.2%; OR: 2.17; 95%CI: 1.65–2.86), were exposed to SHS indoors (37.8% vs 29.8%; OR:1.30; 95%CI: 1.14–1.48), and outdoors (37.7% vs 26.6%; OR: 1.49; 95%CI: 1.28–1.74), and among young people who consumed at least 1 drink of alcohol in the previous 30 days (42.4% vs 28.6%; OR: 1.70; 95%CI: 1.46–1.97), when compared to adolescents not exposed.

Conclusions

Smoking (passively and actively) and the consumption of alcoholic beverages are associated to psychological distress in the adolescent population. Avoiding smoking and the use of alcohol may have beneficial effects on the mental health. Our data reinforce the urgent necessity to prevent effectively underage access to legal drugs in Brazil.

Common mental disorder and its association with academic performance among Debre Berhan University students, Ethiopia

Background

Common mental disorder (CMD) is prevalent in industrialized and non-industrialized countries. The prevalence of CMD among university students was 28.8–44.7% and attributed to several risk factors, such as schooling. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors of CMD. In addition, the association between CMD and academic performance was tested.

Methods

Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted with 422 students at Debre Berhan university from March to April 2015. CMD was the primary outcome variable whereas academic performance was the secondary outcome variable. Kessler psychological distress (K10) scale was used to assess CMD. Bivariate and multiple logistic regression analysis were performed for modeling the primary outcome variable; independent samples T test and linear regression analysis were carried out for modeling the secondary outcome variable. The strength of association was interpreted using odds ratio and regression coefficient (β) and decision on statistical significance was made at a p value of 0.05. Data were entered using EPI-data version 3.1 software and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.01 software.

Results

The prevalence of CMD was 63.1%. Field of study (p = 0.008, OR = 0.2, 95% CI 0.04–0.61), worshiping (p = 0.04, OR = 1.8, 95% CI 1.02–3.35), insomnia (p < 0.001, OR = 3.8, 95% CI 2.21–6.57), alcohol drinking (p = 0.006, OR = 2.7, 95% CI 1.33–5.66), and headache (p = 0.02, OR = 2.1, 95% CI 1.10–3.86) were identified risk factors for CMD. The mean cumulative grade point average of students with CMD was lower by 0.02 compared to those without CMD, but not statistically significant (p = 0.70, β = −0.02, 95% CI −0.15 to 0.10). CMD explained only 0.8% (r² = 0.008) of the difference in academic performance between students.

Conclusions

At least three out of five students fulfilled CMD diagnostic criteria. The statistically significant risk factors were field of study, worshiping, insomnia, alcohol drinking, and headache. Moreover, there was no statistically significant association between CMD and academic performance. Undertaking integrated evidence-based intervention focusing on students with poor sleep quality, poor physical health, and who drink alcohol is essential if the present finding confirmed by a longitudinal study.

Psychiatry, Sex, and Science: The Making of "Adolescent" Motherhood in Southern Brazil

Research linking teen motherhood to psychoneurodevelopmental causes and pathologies has proliferated in the past two decades. In Brazil, a psychodevelopmental project of teen motherhood has gained traction despite many experts’ long-standing commitment to psychodynamic psychiatry and social epidemiology, generating epistemic tension rather than substitution. Drawing on historical ethnography conducted in Southern Brazil, I explore how this project materialized through the co-production of epistemic struggles, remedial interventions, and ontological politics. In showing how this co-production became interwoven with incremental changes in young women’s emotions, sexualities, relationships, and bodies, I describe how one particular “kind” of teen motherhood emerged and became entangled with both psychiatric knowledge-production and the angst of working-class political agency. In giving women a contested psychiatric language with which to rework their social–moral worlds, I argue that science did more than conceptualize teen childbearing in pathological terms; it contributed to its troubled transformation.

ERICA: prevalence of common mental disorders in Brazilian adolescents

OBJECTIVE To describe the prevalence of common mental disorders in Brazilian adolescent students, according to geographical macro-regions, school type, sex, and age. METHODS We evaluated 74,589 adolescents who participated in the Cardiovascular Risk Study in Adolescents (ERICA), a cross-sectional, national, school-based study conducted in 2013-2014 in cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. A self-administered questionnaire and an electronic data collector were employed. The presence of common mental disorders was assessed using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). We estimated prevalence and 95% confidence intervals of common mental disorders by sex, age, and school type, in Brazil and in the macro-regions, considering the sample design. RESULTS The prevalence of common mental disorders was of 30.0% (95%CI 29.2-30.8), being higher among girls (38.4%; 95%CI 37.1-39.7) when compared to boys (21.6%; 95%CI 20.5-22.8), and among adolescents who were from 15 to 17 years old (33.6%; 95%CI 32.2-35.0) compared to those aged between 12 and 14 years (26.7%; 95%CI 25.8-27.6). The prevalence of common mental disorders increased with age for both sexes, always higher in girls (ranging from 28.1% at 12 years to 44.1% at 17 years) than in boys (ranging from 18.5% at 12 years to 27.7% at 17 years). We did not observe any significant difference by macro-region or school type. Stratified analyses showed higher prevalence of common mental disorders among girls aged from 15 to 17 years of private schools in the North region (53.1; 95%CI 46.8-59.4). CONCLUSIONS The high prevalence of common mental disorders among adolescents and the fact that the symptoms are often vague mean these disorders are not so easily identified by school administrators or even by health services. The results of this study can help the proposition of more specific prevention and control measures, focused on highest risk subgroups.

Ethnic differences in tobacco use during pregnancy: findings from a primary care sample in São Paulo, Brazil

OBJECTIVES

Tobacco use during pregnancy is a global health concern. To date the majority of research originates in developed countries, thus we have a need to better understand factors related to maternal health in developing countries. We examine the prevalence and correlates of smoking by ethnicity in a sample of pregnant primary care patients in São Paulo, Brazil.

DESIGN

Data were obtained from completed surveys during perinatal care visits in primary care clinics. We examine a sample of 811 pregnant women surveyed during 20-30 weeks of pregnancy. Multiple logistic regression was used to obtain odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).

RESULTS

We found significant ethnic differences in smoking during pregnancy. Compared to White women, Black women were more likely to use tobacco during pregnancy (OR: 1.95; 95% CI: 1.16-3.27). In the fully adjusted model, when accounting for common mental disorders, differences in smoking during pregnancy by ethnicity remained (OR: 1.96; 95% CI: 1.14-3.36).

CONCLUSIONS

There are ethnic differences in tobacco use during pregnancy. Clinical implications including universal screening for tobacco use during pregnancy and culturally relevant approaches to smoking cessation are suggested.

Desnutrição e sua associação com atividades durante o lazer entre adolescentes

O objetivo deste artigo é verificar a prevalência de desnutrição em adolescentes de duas cidades brasileiras e analisar possíveis associações com a prática de atividades físicas durante horários de lazer. Participaram do estudo 2782 adolescentes de 10 a 17 anos, de escolas da rede pública e privada de uma cidade do sudeste e uma da região sul. O peso e a estatura foram avaliados por balança digital e estadiômetro, respectivamente. A prática de atividade física considerou as variáveis: prática de esportes; andar (tratada como caminhada); andar de bicicleta e assistir televisão. O teste qui-quadrado e a regressão de Poisson foram empregados. A prevalência de desnutrição foi de 13,0%, sendo maior no sexo feminino (14,5%) quando comparado ao masculino (11,9%) [p = 0,047]. A prática esportiva foi associada com menor ocorrência do desfecho (p = 0,001). Foi significativamente menor a prevalência de desnutrição entre aqueles que mantinham frequência moderada de caminhadas em comparação àqueles que apresentavam baixa frequência dessa prática. A prevalência de desnutrição no presente estudo pode ser considerada elevada. Além disso, a condição nutricional inadequada nos adolescentes aparentemente está associada a comportamentos de risco à saúde, caso da prática insuficiente de atividade física durante horários de lazer.

Insatisfação corporal e transtornos mentais comuns em adolescentes

OBJETIVO: Verificar a prevalência de insatisfação corporal em adolescentes e sua associação com fatores socioeconômicos, comportamentais, antropométricos e psicossociais, em especial a presença de transtornos mentais comuns. MÉTODOS: Foram estudados adolescentes de uma escola de Itajaí, nos quais foram realizadas medidas antropométricas para análise do índice de massa corpórea. Aplicou-se um questionário sobre dados pessoais e transtornos mentais comuns. O desfecho principal foi a presença da insatisfação corporal, sendo a análise ajustada dos fatores associados realizada por meio da regressão de Poisson. As razões de prevalência e seus respectivos intervalos de confiança de 95% (IC95%) foram calculados. RESULTADOS: Foram avaliados 214 adolescentes (77,5%) com idade média de 12,4 anos e predomínio do sexo feminino (65,4%). A maioria dos adolescentes avaliados foi classificada como eutrófica (79,4%) e 28,0% deles apresentaram escores indicativos de transtornos mentais comuns. A prevalência de insatisfação corporal foi de 74,3%, (IC95% 67,9-80,0). Dentre os fatores associados ao desfecho, destacaram-se: menor escolaridade materna, obesidade abdominal, percepção do estado nutricional como acima ou abaixo do peso, interferência da forma física em atividades diárias e relacionamentos. A presença de transtornos mentais comuns esteve associada, após análise ajustada, ao nível de 6,6% à insatisfação corporal. CONCLUSÕES: A maioria dos adolescentes possuía índice de massa corporal e circunferência da cintura dentro da normalidade; entretanto, grande parte relatou insatisfação com a imagem corporal, em ambos os sexos. Variáveis maternas e comportamentos relacionados ao peso corporal estiveram associados ao desfecho. Para transtornos mentais comuns, a associação foi próxima ao limiar de significância adotado.

Transtornos mentais comuns e qualidade de vida em jovens: uma amostra populacional de Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

O objetivo foi verificar a prevalência de transtornos mentais comuns (TMC) e sua associação com qualidade de vida em jovens da cidade de Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Estudo transversal de base populacional com jovens de 18 a 24 anos. A seleção amostral foi realizada por conglomerados. Para a investigação dos transtornos mentais comuns foi aplicado o Self Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20), enquanto os níveis de qualidade de vida foram mensurados por intermédio da Medical Outcomes Survey Short-form General Health Survey (SF-36). A prevalência de TMC na amostra estudada foi de 24,5% (N = 382), apresentando-se mais evidente entre as mulheres, entre aqueles que pertenciam à menor classe socioeconômica (D ou E), não estavam estudando, não estavam trabalhando, consumiram álcool e usaram tabaco pelo menos uma vez na última semana e que fizeram uso de alguma substância ilícita nos últimos três meses. Os jovens com TMC obtiveram uma menor média nos escores da SF-36 em todos os domínios de qualidade de vida avaliados. [Common mental disorders and self-esteem in pregnancy: prevalence and associated factors]

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of common mental disorders and the association with self-esteem and other factors in pregnant women. A nested cross-sectional study was performed in a cohort of pregnant women treated in the public health system in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) was used to screen for common mental disorders and the Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale for self-esteem. The sample consisted of 1,267 pregnant women with a mean age of 25 years (SD = 6.53). Mean self-esteem was 9.3 points (SD = 4.76), and prevalence of common mental disorders was 41.4%. Lower self-esteem was associated with higher odds of common mental disorders (p < 0.001). There was a significant association between higher prevalence of common mental disorders and low self-esteem.

[Prevalence and early determinants of common mental disorders in the 1982 birth cohort, Pelotas, Southern Brazil]

OBJECTIVE

To estimate the prevalence of common mental disorders and assess its association with risk factors in a cohort of young adults.

METHODS

Cross-sectional study nested in a 1982 birth cohort study conducted in Pelotas, Southern Brazil. In 2004-5, 4,297 subjects were interviewed during home visits. Common mental disorders were assessed using the Self-Report Questionnaire. Risk factors included socioeconomic, demographic, perinatal, and environmental variables. The analysis was stratified by gender and crude and adjusted prevalence ratios were estimated by Poisson regression.

RESULTS

The overall prevalence of common mental disorders was 28.0%; 32.8% and 23.5% in women and men, respectively. Men and women who were poor in 2004-5, regardless of their poor status in 1982, had nearly 1.5-fold increased risk for common mental disorders (p<0.001) when compared to those who have never been poor. Among women, being poor during childhood (p<0.001) and black/mixed skin color (p=0.002) increased the risk for mental disorders. Low birth weight and duration of breastfeeding were not associated to the risk of these disorders.

CONCLUSIONS

Higher prevalence of common mental disorders among low-income groups and race-ethnic minorities suggests that social inequalities present at birth have a major impact on mental health, especially common mental disorders.

Association between regular participation in sports and leisure time behaviors in Brazilian adolescents: a cross-sectional study

Background

The belief that adolescents engaged in sports increase their overall physical activity level while simultaneously decreasing physical inactivity has been the foundation of many intervention programs in developing countries. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between regular participation in sports and both active behaviors and TV viewing during leisure time.

Methods

A total of 1752 Brazilian adolescents (812 = male and 940 = female) participated in this study. Regular participation in sports, as well as active behaviors (exemplified by walking or cycling) and TV viewing during leisure time were assessed by means of a questionnaire. The chi-square test analyzed the association between sports practice and leisure time behaviors, and the Poisson regression with robust variance indicated the magnitude of these associations.

Results

The prevalence of regular participation in sports was 14.8% (95% confidence interval 13.2% to 16.5%). After adjustment for all confounders, participation in sports was associated with, at the highest frequency, cycling (PR = 2.55 [1.80–3.60]) and walking (PR = 2.69 [1.98–3.64]) during leisure time. However, there was not an association between the participation in sports and frequency of TV viewing (PR = 1.28 [0.81–2.02]).

Conclusion

This study presented data indicating that the regular participation in sports is positively associated with a higher frequency of physically active behaviors during leisure time. However, the results did not support the hypothesis that the engagement in sports necessarily decreases leisure time spent in TV viewing.
