Effect of the number of thermocycles on microleakage of resin composite restorations

A comparative study on microleakage of two low shrinkage composite materials in Class II cavities: A stereomicroscopic analysis

Aim

To compare the microleakage of Filtek bulk fill posterior and Beautifil II LS composites in Class II cavities using stereomicroscope.

Materials and Methods

A total of 34 extracted teeth were randomly divided into two groups. Teeth were prepared and mounted on a plaster block. In each tooth, Class II cavities were prepared, following which the cavities were etched and bonded. In Group I, 17 teeth were restored with Filtek bulk fill posterior composite in bulk fill technique and in Group II, 17 teeth were restored with Beautifil II LS following manufacture's instructions. The samples were then thermocycled and then the tooth were immersed in 1% methylene blue for 24 h and were divided into two halves mesiodistally using a diamond disc at low speed. Then, all the sections were observed under a stereomicroscope at ×10 magnification.

Results

Mann-Whitney U-test displayed a statistically significant higher mean rank among Filtek bulk fill group (mean rank = 23.09) when compared to Beautifil II LS composite group (mean rank = 11.91).

Conclusion

The study concluded that in Class II restorations, Beautifil II LS showed significantly less microleakage than Filtek bulk fill posterior.

Thermal Cycling Effect on Locator System Retention and Metal Surface Roughness

PURPOSE

To estimate the effects of the thermal cycling (TC) process on the metal surfaces of Locators, as well as retention loss, and the correlation between them.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty-five new Locator R-Tx were included in the study. Four areas were marked on each Locators' patrix metal surface and scanned using a confocal scanner (μsurf explorer; NanoFocus). Three surface roughness parameters were measured in the scans: Sa (average distance of peaks from the central plain of the area), Vmp (volume of the peaks in the area), and Spc (mean curvature of the peaks describing the degree of their sharpness). Retention test was performed using Instron® 4500 compression tension tensile tester at a speed of 10 mm/min. The retention tests were done using a working model made of two acrylic blocks in which the Locator system parts were inserted. The surface parameters measurements and the retention tests were performed 2 times, once before and once after TC. The Locators were subjected to 15,000 TC cycles by investing them into 2 tubs with different water temperatures, 55°C and 5°C. During each 60-second cycle, the Locators were submerged in each tub for 20 seconds, with a 10 second transition time between the tubs. The post-TC retention and surface parameters measurements were compared with those prior to TC and the prior to TC measurements served as controls. Changes in parameters before and after TC were analyzed by a two-way ANOVA nested model with random intercept and slope by restricted maximum likelihood method. Correlation between retention and surface parameters was quantified and examined using Kendall's correlation test. The findings were considered statistically significant if p < 0.05.

RESULTS

There was a significant decrease in retention of 16.6N at the second retention test (p < 0.001). A significant statistical decrease in surface parameters were measured after TC process, Sa and Vmp (18 ×10^-3 μm, p = 0.041 and 0.94 ×10^-3 1/μm, p = 0.001, respectively). A significant statistical increase in Spc of 6.4 ×10^-3 μm³ /μm² (p = 0.023) was noticed. The correlation between retention decreases and surface changes was not statistically significant.

CONCLUSION

The TC process causes a substantial reduction in retention to the Locator system over time. In addition, TC causes significant but minor changes to the Locator surface area. Most of the changes are in the horizontal dimension.

Comparison of microleakage and shear bond strength of ribbon and twisted wire retainers bonded on human mandibular incisors with two different types of adhesives with and without primer: An in-vitro study

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Shear bond strength and microleakage are the success factors of fixed retainers. Recently, primer-free composites were introduced to reduce chair time. The main objectives of this study were to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) and microleakage of GC Ortho Connect^TM Flow (OF) and Transbond^TM XT (TXT) with two types of common retainer wires (0.0175-inch twisted wire and 0.028×.0.008-inch ribbon dead soft wire retainers). The secondary objectives of the study were to compare enamel-adhesive interface and wire-adhesive interface microleakages.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This in vitro study was conducted on 132 human mandibular incisors (96 for bond strength and 36 for microleakage). The teeth were randomly divided into four groups for use of ribbon and twisted wires with OF and TXT adhesives. The bond strength was measured by a universal testing machine. Microleakage was evaluated by the dye penetration test using 0.05% fuchsine. Data were analysed by two-way ANOVA (alpha=0.05).

RESULTS

No significant difference was noted in bond strength among the four groups (P>0.05). However, the microleakage of OF was significantly higher than that of TXT at both the enamel-adhesive and wire-adhesive interfaces (P<0.001). The microleakage at the wire-adhesive and enamel-adhesive interface was not significantly different in groups 1 and 4 and was significant in group 2 and 3.

CONCLUSION

Type of adhesive significantly affected the microleakage, and OF resulted in higher microleakage than TXT at both the enamel-adhesive and wire-adhesive interfaces. Type of wire had no significant effect on microleakage. Although OF showed comparable SBS to TXT, its higher microleakage may compromise its successful long-term clinical service.

Evaluation and Comparison of Two Different Cleaning Procedures on Mechanical Properties for Recemented Restoration Using Two Conventional Glass Ionomer Cement Types: An In Vitro Study

Background In modern dentistry, fixed dental prostheses are often the preferred and the most complex treatment procedures. However, the success of these procedures depends to a great extent on the durability and consistency of the ongoing reconstruction. This paper aimed to compare the shear bond characteristics of conventional glass ionomer cement types, namely, Vivaglass luting cement and GC fuji 1 cement, after being subjected to two different dentin-cleaning techniques: the tungsten carbide bur and the prophy jet. This would help determine whether the castings that have been cleaned and recemented are just as tenacious as when they were initially placed. Methodology A total of 60 human teeth extracted due to periodontal disease were collected for this study. The teeth were cleaned and stored in a thymol arrangement after carefully removing any leftover fragile tissue. They were randomly grouped as follows: luted with Vivaglass cement (N = 30) in group A and GC fuji 1 cement (N = 30) in group B. Each group's debonded surfaces were arbitrarily split into three subgroups, with each containing 10 samples. This was done to comply with dentin-cleaning techniques for recementation. Results The intergroup bond strengths calculated were compared among the subgroups. The mean strength for subgroup IA was 2.78 ± 0.24 MPa, subgroup IB was 2.60 ± 0.30 MPa, subgroup IIA was 4.39 ± 0.19 MPa, subgroup IIB was 3.80 ± 0.23 MPa, subgroup III A was 4.52 ± 0.22 MPa, and subgroup IIIB was 3.63 ± 0.17 MPa. An analysis of variance test showed there was a significant difference between the subgroups (F = 117.60; P = 0.001). The results revealed that there was a significant difference between the subgroups. Shear bond strength testing was performed using common testing equipment. The results indicated that there was not any significant difference between the mean increases in the shear bond strength of the two luting cement types. However, the GC fuji 1 cement showed greater initial shear bond strength than the Vivaglass cement. Additionally, when the tungsten carbide bur was used as a cleaning technique before recementing, it showed greater shear bond strength compared to the prophy jet. Conclusions The initial shear bond strength of GC fuji 1 (Group B) luting cement was slightly higher than that of Vivaglass (Group A), and the bond strength achieved after recementation with GC fuji 1 and surface cleaning with the carbide bur was the highest among the other three groups.

Effect of Preheating and Vibration on Microhardness and Microleakage of Microhybrid Resin Composite (In Vitro Study)

BACKGROUND: Preheating and sonic vibration are two methods for the treatment of microhybrid resin composites that may effect on their mechanical and physical properties. AIM: This study was conducted to assess the effect of using preheating and sonic vibration on microhardness and microleakage of microhybrid resin composite METHODS AND MATERIALS: For microhardness test, a total of 30 samples of resin composite discs were prepared. Samples were divided into three groups according to the method of treatment of resin composite, controlled group (T0), preheated group (T1), and sonic vibration group (T2). Surface microhardness values were evaluated at baseline and after thermocycling. For microleakage test, a total of 30 Class-V cavities were prepared on the labial surfaces of extracted human anterior teeth. The cavities were then divided into three groups according to the method of resin composite treatment as mentioned before in the microhardness test. All samples were sectioned; then two-dimensional cross-sectional images from each sample. Each cross-sectional image was analyzed using Image J software to quantify interfacial microleakage at the cavity floor. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Two-way ANOVA analysis was used to test the effects of thermocycling on three groups of each test. One-way ANOVA was used to compare between three different methods of resin composite treatment. RESULTS: For microhardness at baseline revealed that the highest mean value was recorded for the control group, followed by the sonic vibration group meanwhile, the lowest mean value was recorded for the sonic vibration group, followed by preheated group at microleakage test. CONCLUSION: Preheating and sonic vibration of microhybrid resin composite does not improve its microhardness; however, sonic vibration provides better marginal adaptation than the preheating and the conventional methods.

Tensile Bond Strength and Marginal Integrity of a Self-adhering and a Self-etch Adhesive Flowable Composite after Artificial Thermomechanical Aging

Aim

This study aims to compare the self-etch adhesive (SEA) and self-adhesive flowable composite (SAF) concerning tensile bond strength (TBS) and marginal integrity by microleakage (µ LK) test in deciduous molars after artificial thermomechanical aging.

Materials and methods

120 extracted primary molars were collected. Sixty teeth were mounted for testing TBS. Teeth were restored using SAF (n = 30) and SEA-conventional flowable (CF) composite (n = 30) and subjected to artificial thermal aging. Half the teeth (n = 15) from each material were subjected to mechanical loading (SEA-TBS-L and SAF-TBS-L). The specimens with no-load (NL) served as control (SEA-TBS-NL and SAF-TBS-NL). Class V cavity prepared and restored with SAF (n = 30) and SEA-CF (n = 30) to test µ LK after thermal aging. The subgroups were as same as the TBS based on with or without mechanical loading (SEA-µ LK-L, SEA-µ LK-NL, SAF-µ LK-L, SAF-µ LK-L; n = 15 each). µ LK was determined by employing the dye immersion technique.

Results

Concerning TBS, there is a significant difference between SEA and SAF with load or no load. Concerning µ LK, there is a significant difference between the materials under loading and no difference was found when not mechanically loaded. Also, concerning both TBS and µ LK, a significant difference was observed between the load and no-load subgroups within each material.

Conclusion

SAF exhibited higher TBS than the SEA. Mechanical loading not only adversely affected the TBS but also increased the µLK of the compared materials.

Clinical Significance

Restoring the primary teeth with SAF not only shortens the laborious operatory time but also yields good clinical serviceability with the good bond strength and minimal µ LK, thus preventing premature loss of teeth and consequential malocclusion.

Effect of Curcumin Suspension and Vitamin C on Dentin Shear Bond Strength and Durability. A Pilot Study

Background:

Preserving the strength and durability of dentin bonds is a concern of dental researchers and practitioners.

Objective:

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of treating etched dentin with vitamin C and curcumin suspension as cross-linking agents on the shear bond strength and durability of a universal dental adhesive.

Methods:

Extracted human third molar teeth were collected. Fifty-six flat coronal dentin surfaces were divided equally into four groups: (1) treated with adhesives; (2) etched with 37% H3PO4 for 10s before application of adhesives; (3) same as group (2), but with dentin treated with 2.5% curcumin suspension for 60s before the application of adhesive; and (4) same as group (3), but with the use of a 20% vitamin C suspension instead of a curcumin suspension. Filtek Z350XT composite was built for all samples. Half of the samples in each group were subjected to thermocycling. Shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine. Scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the dentinal surfaces after treatment.

Results:

Treatment with curcumin suspension preserved immediate and long-term bond strength. Conversely, treatment of etched dentin with vitamin C solution significantly reduced the immediate bond strength, but a significant improvement was observed after aging. SEM showed that both cross-linking agents resulted in narrowing or closing of the dentinal tubules, with an adhesive mode of failure.

Conclusion:

The application of curcumin or vitamin C suspension to acid-etched dentin resulted in different effects on immediate and long-term shear bond strength when using universal adhesives.

Shear bond strength of composite resin to resin-modified glass ionomer cement using 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-based and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-free adhesive system

Background:

Sandwich technique combines the properties of both composite resin and glass ionomer cement to make the most of the physical and esthetic properties of each material. Bonding agents improve the wettability of GIC surface and improves the bond between composite resin and GIC. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare shear bond strength of composite resin to resin modified glass ionomer cement using HEMA-based and HEMA-free adhesive systems. An in vitro study.

Materials and Methods:

Total 30 disc-shaped samples were prepared with resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC). Samples were divided into three groups, each group containing 10 samples. Group I (n=10): Nano-hybrid composite resin (NHCR) was bonded to RMGIC without any adhesive system. Group II (n=10): NHCR was bonded to RMGIC using hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA)-based adhesive system. Group III (n=10): NHCR was bonded to RMGIC using HEMA-free adhesive system. The shear bond strength was tested using Universal testing Machine and the results were calculated using one way ANOVA and Post-Hoc test.

Results:

Maximum shear bond strength was recorded in group III where HEMA-free adhesive used with a mean value of 6.13±1.859 MPa followed by group II where HEMA-based adhesive used with mean value of 4.38±1.533 MPa. The control group showed least shear bond strength.

Conclusion:

Application of HEMA-free adhesive (OptiBond All-In-One) resulted in greater shear bond strength between RMGIC and composite resin than HEMA-based adhesive (Single bond Universal Adhesive).

Corrosion of Nickel-Titanium Orthodontic Archwires in Saliva and Oral Probiotic Supplements

Objectives

The aim of the study was to examine how probiotic supplements affect the corrosion stability of orthodontic archwires made of nickel-titanium alloy (NiTi).

Materials and Methods

NiTi archwires (0.508x0.508 and having the length of 2.5 cm) were tested. The archwires (composition Ni=50.4%, Ti=49.6%) were uncoated, nitrified and rhodium coated. Surface microgeometry was observed by using scanning electron microscope and surface roughness was measured by profilometer through these variables: roughness average, maximum height and maximum roughness depth. Corrosion was examined by electrochemical method of cyclic polarisation.

Results

Rhodium coated alloy in saliva has significantly higher general corrosion in saliva than nitrified alloy and uncoated alloy, with large effect size (p=0.027; η2=0.700). In the presence of probiotics, the result was even more pronounced (p<0.001; η2=0.936). Probiotic supplement increases general and localised corrosion of rhodium coated archwire and slightly decreases general corrosion and increases localised corrosion in uncoated archwire, while in the case of nitrified archwire the probability of corrosion is very low. The differences in surface roughness between NiTi wires before corrosion are not significant. Exposure to saliva decreases roughness average in rhodium coated wire (p=0.015; η2=0.501). Media do not significantly influence surface microgeometry in nitrified and uncoated wires.

Conclusion

Probiotic supplement affects corrosion depending on the type of coating of the NiTi archwire. It increases general corrosion of rhodium coated wire and causes localised corrosion of uncoated and rhodium coated archwire. Probiotic supplement does not have greater influence on surface roughness compared to that of saliva.

Microleakage in Class V Composite Restorations after Desensitizing Surface Treatment with Er:YAG and CO2 Lasers

Aims: Glutaraldehyde, CO₂ and Er:YAG lasers can be used for treatment of dentin hypersensitivity. However, their application may have adverse effects on the clinical service of restorations. This study aimed to assess the microleakage in composite restorations following surface treatment with Glutaraldehyde desensitizer, CO₂ and Er:YAG laser irradiation for treatment of dentin hypersensitivity. Materials and methods: This experimental study was conducted on 60 extracted sound human teeth. Class V cavities were prepared measuring 3×3 mm using a diamond bur. Specimens were randomly divided into 4 groups of 15. Group one:no surface treatment, Group two:applying Glutaraldehyde desensitizer, Groups of three and four were irradiated with CO₂ and Er:YAG lasers, respectively. Surfaces were restored with bonding agent (Single Bond 2, 3M, USA) and Z250 composite (3M, USA). Specimens were thermocycled and immersed in 1% methylene blue solution for 24 hours. Microleakage scores were assessed under a stereomicroscope at ×20 magnification. Data were analyzed using SPSS and the Kruskal Wallis test (P=0.05). Results: There was no significant difference between microleakage of groups in enamel margins (P=0.694). The difference in microleakage at the dentin margin was significant between groups (P=0.018). Conclusions: Application of Glutaraldehyde-desensitizer and CO₂ laser irradiation of surfaces prior to composite restoration do not increase microleakage at the enamel or dentin margins but tooth surface treatment with Er:YAG laser significantly increased the microleakage at the dentin margins.

Evaluation of Stain Penetration by Beverages in Demineralized Enamel Treated With Resin Infiltration

PURPOSE

To evaluate stain penetration by different beverages in artificially demineralized human teeth treated with resin infiltration.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Sixty extracted human permanent molars were demineralized, treated with resin infiltration (Icon), and immersed in four different beverages (coffee, grape juice, iced tea, and distilled water; N=15) for four weeks. After aging, teeth in the distilled water group were stained with 2% methylene blue for 24 hours. All teeth were sectioned, and stain penetration was evaluated under light microscopy. Chi-square test, independent and paired sample t-test, analysis of variance with the Fisher least significant difference post hoc test, and the Kruskal-Wallis test were used to analyze the results (p<0.05).

RESULTS

Resin infiltration-treated surfaces (Icon surfaces) had statistically significant fewer samples with presence of stain penetration compared to untreated surfaces (control surfaces) (p<0.001). There was also a significant decrease in depth of stain penetration in Icon surfaces compared to the control surfaces (p<0.001). Among tested beverage groups, iced tea showed significantly greater depth of stain penetration (0.134±0.029 mm), followed by grape juice (0.118±0.047 mm), methylene blue (0.022±0.019 mm), and coffee (0.008±0.017 mm; p<0.001).

CONCLUSION

Both Icon and control surfaces exhibit stain penetration by different beverages (iced tea, grape juice, and coffee). However, resin-infiltrated enamel surfaces allow significantly less depth of stain penetration compared to untreated surfaces. The iced tea group presents greatest depth of stain penetration, followed by grape juice, methylene blue, and coffee.

56-month clinical performance of Class I and II resin composite restorations

OBJECTIVE

This study evaluated the 56-month clinical performance of Class I and II resin composite restorations. Filtek P60 was compared with Filtek Z250, which are both indicated for posterior restorations but differ in terms of handling characteristics. The null hypothesis tested was that there is no difference in the clinical performance of the two resin composites in posterior teeth.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Thirty-three patients were treated by the same operator, who prepared 48 Class I and 42 Class II cavities, which were restored with Single Bond/Filtek Z250 or Single Bond/Filtek P60 restorative systems. Restorations were evaluated by two independent examiners at baseline and after 56 months, using the modified USPHS criteria. Data were analyzed statistically using Chi-square and Fisher's Exact tests (a=0.05).

RESULTS

After 56 months, 25 patients (31 Class I and 36 Class II) were analyzed. A 3% failure rate occurred due to secondary caries and excessive loss of anatomic form for P60. For both restorative systems, there were no significant differences in secondary caries and postoperative sensitivity. However, significant changes were observed with respect to anatomic form, marginal discoloration, and marginal adaptation. Significant decreases in surface texture were observed exclusively for the Z250 restorations.

CONCLUSIONS

Both restorative systems can be used for posterior restorations and can be expected to perform well in the oral environment.

Laboratory evaluation of toothbrush/toothpaste abrasion resistance after smooth enamel surface sealing

OBJECTIVES

The use of dental sealants has been extended to smooth enamel surfaces. The present study was conducted to test the in vitro performance of four sealants with different characteristics (highly and lowly filled, self-etching features).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Eighty human teeth (lower incisors and premolars) were randomly divided into following sealant test groups: ProSeal(TM), LightBond(TM), OrthoSolo(TM), and Seal&Protect(®). Twenty untreated teeth served as a control group. Tooth brushing was conducted for a period of time simulating 12, 18, and 24 months. During the toothbrush abrasion protocol, the specimens were subjected to thermal and acidic challenge. Sealant thickness was determined with μCT imaging, and qualitative and quantitative surface effects were investigated using stereo microscopy and raster electron microscopy, respectively. Data were subjected to t test or Kruskal-Wallis/Mann-Whitney tests (alpha, 5%).

RESULTS

The wear behavior and film integrity of highly filled sealants were superior to lowly filled sealants. Even after 1 year of tooth brushing, significant surface deterioration with deleterious loss of enamel and discoloration was observed in all tested materials (χ(2) = 15.349; P = 0.004). The size of the observed defects increased over time.

CONCLUSION

These results suggest that the application of sealants on smooth enamel surfaces should be limited to special indications, and their usefulness has to be revisited.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Based on the results of this in vitro study, the general overall application of enamel sealants needs to be questioned.

Marginal sealing durability of two contemporary self-etch adhesives

Introduction. Sealing abilities of two self-etch adhesives were evaluated after two aging processes: storage in water and thermocycling. Materials and Methods. Cl V cavities were prepared on the buccal and lingual aspects of 48 human premolars, with cervical margins 1 mm below the CEJ. Clearfil Protect Bond (CPB) and BeautiBond (BB) (two-step and one-step self-etch adhesives, resp.) were applied, each to half of the cavities and restored with composite resin. Each group was randomly subdivided into 4 subgroups (n = 12) and evaluated for dye penetration after 24 hours, after 3000 thermocycling rounds, after a 6-month water storage, and after 3000 thermocycling rounds plus 6-month water storage, respectively. Data was analyzed using SPSS 11.5 and Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests (α = 0.05). Results. There were no significant differences in enamel and dentin microleakage between the adhesives (P = 0.683; P = 0.154). Furthermore, no significant differences were observed in enamel microleakage of each one of CPB and BB (P = 0.061 and P = 0.318, resp.). However, significant decrease was observed in subgroups 3 and 4 (P = 0.001) for CPB dentinal margins. Conclusion. In this study, limited aging procedures had no influence on marginal integrity of composite resin restorations bonded with self-etch adhesives of CPB and BB. Furthermore, CPB dentinal sealing improved after aging.

Microleakage after thermocycling of cemented crowns--a meta-analysis

OBJECTIVES

Microleakage testing of dental materials is a commonly accepted evaluation technique of margin integrity. Thermocycling has been utilized by many researchers to study the influence of temperature extremes on the marginal gap of cemented restorations. The aim of this investigation was to analyze microleakage data on cemented crowns, published in the dental literature until Dec 2009, to identify methodological factors that might potentially affect the results of in vitro microleakage tests and to compare the results.

METHODS

The following databases were included: Ovid MEDLINE(R) In-Process & Other Non-Indexed Citations and Ovid MEDLINE(R) 1950 to Present, Ovid-MEDLINE(R) 1950 to Present with Daily Update, EMBASE, EBM Reviews - Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and Pub Med. The search was limited to articles in English, French, Italian and German published until the end of 2009. Classical reviews, comments, animal studies, in vivo articles and studies investigating restorative materials or milk teeth were excluded. 33 different studies were finally selected. The studies were entered in a database and compared using selected literature criteria: sample, restoration procedures, thermocycling and mechanical cycling, evaluation method. For statistical analysis only 16 studies could be applied.

RESULTS

It was not possible to make a quantitative synthesis of most of the data, due to the heterogeneity of the studies concerning methods, treatment and outcome variables. Comparing the main groups of materials (ceramics, gold alloys and base metal alloys), no significant difference in the proportion of teeth without microleakage was found. Furthermore no significant difference in the proportion of teeth showing microleakage less than two third of the wall or teeth showing microleakage including the entire wall was found. Using the mean values in the meta-analysis instead of the proportions does not change the results. Confidence intervals could only be calculated for two materials (gold alloy, metal alloy). No difference between materials was found.

SIGNIFICANCE

Comparison of the results from different studies is critical, since there are no generally accepted standards for experimental parameters, such as type and concentration of the storage solution, time of storage, temperature during storage, type and duration of thermal cycling and/or mechanical cycling, and the scoring criteria. There is lack of standardization of experimental conditions, which would ensure confidence in the studies and would further allow better comparability of various results.

Use of a self-etching adhesive on previously etched intact enamel and its effect on sealant microleakage and tag formation

AIM

This study verified the effects of a self-etching adhesive applied on pre-etched fissures (phosphoric acid 35%) on microleakage, penetration ability and tag formation of a fissure sealant.

METHODS

80 extracted sound human molar teeth were randomly divided into four groups and bisected in two equal parts, forming two subgroups, denominated A and B. Groups 1 and 2 were etched with phosphoric acid for 60 and 40s, respectively. Groups 3 and 4 were etched with phosphoric acid (40 and 20s, respectively) and afterwards treated with Xeno III (20s). All the procedures on sealant placement were performed under 90+/-2% relative humidity. The subgroups A and B were submitted to 1000 and 5000 thermal cycles, respectively. The samples were examined by light microscopy and by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) after sectioning. Microleakage, penetration ability, fissure type, tag formation quality and tag length were measured.

RESULTS

Etching with phosphoric acid for 60s showed statistically significantly lower microleakage when compared to the other groups and significantly better tag formation quality and longer tags compared to 20s H(3)PO(4) plus Xeno III. Fissure type and number of thermal cycles were not significant factors on sealant microleakage. The penetration ability of the sealant in the fissure systems was not influenced by the treatment regimes. Shallow fissures showed a significant better tag formation than deep fissures. No significant difference in the prevalence of fissure types was seen among the groups.

CONCLUSION

Etching fissures with phosphoric acid for 60s showed best results. The additional use of Xeno III did not improve fissure sealing under the conditions of this study.
