Development and population growth of Lygus hesperus on selected weed hosts, artificial diet and cotton in the laboratory

Flight Potential of Western Tarnished Plant Bug (Hemiptera: Miridae)

The western tarnished plant bug, Lygus hesperus Knight, is an economically important pest of several agricultural crops in the western United States. It is an increasing threat to potato, Solanum tuberosum L. (Solanales: Solanaceae), in the diverse landscape of the Columbia Basin of Oregon and Washington. In this study, flight mills were used to investigate the flight capacity of L. hesperus with the aim of better understand its dispersive characteristics in the agricultural landscape. Explicitly, we investigated the effects of biological factors such as generation, gender, and body weight on the flight potential of adult L. hesperus adults collected from field populations during spring and summer of 2019 and 2020. The study flight parameters assessed were distance, activity, velocity, and diel periodicity. In 24-h flight mill assays, a clear dichotomy pattern was found in sum flown distance for adults that travelled 1 km or shorter and adults that travelled greater than 1 km. Individuals from the summer population flew farther and more actively than those from the overwintered population. Female L. hesperus flew farther and were more active compared to males. Adult body weight before the flight was directly proportional to flight distance and number of flights, but not with velocity. Overwintered L. hesperus adults lost a higher percentage of their pre-flight body weight compared to summer adults over the course of the study. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that demonstrated that L. hesperus summer adult population has the flight ability to disperse greater distance in the agricultural landscape than overwintered population.

Reduced caterpillar damage can benefit plant bugs in Bt cotton

Bt cotton was genetically modified to produce insecticidal proteins targeting Lepidopteran pests and is therefore only minimally affected by caterpillar damage. This could lead to reduced levels of inherent, systemically inducible defensive compounds in Bt cotton which might benefit other important cotton herbivores such as plant bugs. We studied the effects of plant defense induction on the performance of the plant bug Lygus hesperus by caging nymphs on different food sources (bolls/squares) of Bt and non-Bt cotton which were either undamaged, damaged by Bt tolerant caterpillars, or treated with jasmonic acid (JA). Terpenoid induction patterns of JA-treated and L. hesperus-damaged plants were characterized for different plant structures and artificial diet assays using purified terpenoids (gossypol/heliocide H1/4) were conducted. Nymphs were negatively affected if kept on plants damaged by caterpillars or sprayed with JA. Performance of nymphs was increased if they fed on squares and by the Bt-trait which had a positive effect on boll quality as food. In general, JA-sprayed plants (but not L. hesperus infested plants) showed increased levels of terpenoids in the plant structures analyzed, which was especially pronounced in Bt cotton. Nymphs were not negatively affected by terpenoids in artificial diet assays indicating that other inducible cotton responses are responsible for the found negative effects on L. hesperus. Overall, genetically engineered plant defenses can benefit plant bugs by releasing them from plant-mediated indirect competition with lepidopterans which might contribute to increasing numbers of hemipterans in Bt cotton.

Density Dependence and Growth Rate: Evolutionary Effects on Resistance Development to Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis)

It has long been recognized that pest population dynamics can affect the durability of a pesticide, but dose remains the primary component of insect resistance management (IRM). For transgenic pesticidal traits such as Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bacillales: Bacillaceae)), dose (measured as the mortality of susceptibles caused by a toxin) is a relatively fixed characteristic and often falls below the standard definition of high dose. Hence, it is important to understand how pest population dynamics modify durability and what targets they present for IRM. We used a deterministic model of a generic arthropod pest to examine how timing and strength of density dependence interacted with population growth rate and Bt mortality to affect time to resistance. As in previous studies, durability typically reached a minimum at intermediate doses. However, high population growth rates could eliminate benefits of high dose. The timing of density dependence had a more subtle effect. If density dependence operated simultaneously with Bt mortality, durability was insensitive to its strengths. However, if density dependence was driven by postselection densities, decreasing its strength could increase durability. The strength of density dependence could affect durability of both single traits and pyramids, but its influence depended on the timing of density dependence and size of the refuge. Our findings suggest the utility of a broader definition of high dose, one that incorporates population-dynamic context. That maximum growth rates and timing and strength of interactions causing density dependent mortality can all affect durability, also highlights the need for ecologically integrated approaches to IRM research.

A comparison of artificial diet and hybrid sweet corn for the rearing of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) based on life table characteristics

The demographic characteristics of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) reared on hybrid sweet corn (Zea mays L. variety saccharata) (hybrid super sweet corn KY bright jean) and on an artificial diet were compared by using the age-stage, two-sex life table. Because the hatch rate of eggs varies with maternal age, age-specific fecundity was calculated based on the numbers of hatched eggs to reveal the biological characteristics of H. armigera accurately. The intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate (λ) and mean generation time (T) of H. armigera were 0.0853 d(-1), 1.0890 d(-1), and 46.6 d, respectively, on Z. mays and 0.1015 d(-1), 1.1068 d(-1), and 46.3 d, respectively, on the artificial diet. There were significant differences in the intrinsic rate of increase and finite rate between two treatments. The age-stage life expectancy and reproductive value also were calculated. The relationships among the net reproductive rate, the mean female fecundity, the number of emerged females, and the total number of individuals used in the life table study are consistent with theoretical expectations. We recommend the age-stage, two-sex life table for use in insect demographic studies to incorporate both sexes and the variation in developmental rate among individuals and to obtain accurate population parameters. The artificial diet is more suitable for the mass rearing of H. armigera.
