Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertension (HTN) is an important risk factor for atherosclerotic and non-atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). HTN increases risk of stroke and diabetes complications and at the end stage renal disease. Sleep disorders including short sleep duration are involved in pathogenesis of HTN. This study aimed to examine the association between self-reported sleep duration and HTN in a group of adult population in Isfahan City, Iran. METHODS This cross-sectional survey was performed as part of the Isfahan Healthy Heart Program (IHHP). A total of 12492 individuals aged over 19 years (6110 men and 6382 women) entered the study. Sleep duration was recorded according to subjects' self-report. HTN was defined as a systolic blood pressure (SBP) of ≥ 140 mmHg, a diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of ≥ 90 mmHg, or use of antihypertensive medication. The relation between sleep hours and HTN was examined using multiple logistic regression in three models, unadjusted, adjusted according to age and sex, and adjusted according to age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC). RESULTS Sleeping time less than 5 hours, in comparison to sleep duration of 7-8 hours per night,was associated with a higher risk of HTN [odds ratio (OR) = 2.52, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.17-2.93]. This association remained significant even after adjustment for age, sex, BMI, and WC (OR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.16-1.64). Sleep duration over 9 hours had a negative association with risk of HTN among those under 60 years old (OR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.47-0.86). CONCLUSION Sleep duration less than 5 hours is positively associated with HTN. It seems that sleep duration might affect HTN and atherosclerotic CVD.

Abstract
Protein kinase C (PKC) is a key mediator of many diverse physiological and pathological responses. PKC activation play an important regulatory role of cardiac function. The present study was performed to investigate whether there were differential activations of the PKCε and how the activation coupled with norepinephrine transporter (NET) surface expression, sympathetic innervation pattern and extracellular matrix remodeling in different cardiac hemodynamic overloads induced by abdominal aortic constriction or aortocaval fistula. At 8weeks after the operations, heart failure were induced, accompanied with myocardial hypertrophy, which was more pronounced in pressure overload (POL) than that of volume overload (VOL) rats, left ventricular dysfunction and increased plasma norepinephrine (NE). In POL rats there was an increase in myocardial collagen deposition, in contrast, the amount decreased in VOL as compared with the sham rats. POL remarkably upregulated PKCε membrane-cytosol ratio and downregulated NET membrane fraction, whereas, in VOL induced opposite changes. Accompanied with the PKCε activation, nerve sprouting, evidenced by myocardial GAP43 protein increased, and different nerve phenotypes were found, in POL tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) positive nerve density increased with NET and choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunoreactivity density decreased, in contrast, in VOL NET and ChAT increased, TH did not change. The overloads did not induce alteration of NET mRNA expression, but resulted in different myocardial β1-AR mRNA expression, in POL β1-AR mRNAwas significantly downregulated, while in VOL rats unaltered. Conclusion, the present results suggested that the different cardiac hemodynamic overload could differentially activate a common signaling, PKCε intermediate and thereby generate biological diversity.

Abstract
The ability of the circadian clock to adapt to environmental changes is critical for maintaining homeostasis, preventing disease, and limiting the detrimental effects of aging. To date, little is known about age-related changes in the entrainment of peripheral clocks to external cues. We therefore evaluated the ability of the peripheral clocks of the kidney, liver, and submandibular gland to be entrained by external stimuli including light, food, stress, and exercise in young versus aged mice using in vivo bioluminescence monitoring. Despite a decline in locomotor activity, peripheral clocks in aged mice exhibited normal oscillation amplitudes under light–dark, constant darkness, and simulated jet lag conditions, with some abnormal phase alterations. However, age-related impairments were observed in peripheral clock entrainment to stress and exercise stimuli. Conversely, age-related enhancements were observed in peripheral clock entrainment to food stimuli and in the display of food anticipatory behaviors. Finally, we evaluated the hypothesis that deficits in sympathetic input from the central clock located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus were in part responsible for age-related differences in the entrainment. Aged animals showed an attenuated entrainment response to noradrenergic stimulation as well as decreased adrenergic receptor mRNA expression in target peripheral organs. Taken together, the present findings indicate that age-related circadian disorganization in entrainment to light, stress, and exercise is due to sympathetic dysfunctions in peripheral organs, while meal timing produces effective entrainment of aged peripheral circadian clocks.

Abstract
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is the most common form of heart failure (HF) in older adults, particularly women, and is increasing in prevalence as the population ages. With morbidity and mortality on par with HF with reduced ejection fraction, it remains a most challenging clinical syndrome for the practicing clinician and basic research scientist. Originally considered to be predominantly caused by diastolic dysfunction, more recent insights indicate that HFpEF in older persons is typified by a broad range of cardiac and non-cardiac abnormalities and reduced reserve capacity in multiple organ systems. The globally reduced reserve capacity is driven by: 1) inherent age-related changes; 2) multiple, concomitant co-morbidities; 3) HFpEF itself, which is likely a systemic disorder. These insights help explain why: 1) co-morbidities are among the strongest predictors of outcomes; 2) approximately 50% of clinical events in HFpEF patients are non-cardiovascular; 3) clinical drug trials in HFpEF have been negative on their primary outcomes. Embracing HFpEF as a true geriatric syndrome, with complex, multi-factorial pathophysiology and clinical heterogeneity could provide new mechanistic insights and opportunities for progress in management. Abstract
It is postulated that supplementation of exogenous nerve growth factor (NGF) might mediate improvement of the cardiac sympathetic nerve function in heart failure (HF). Local intramuscular injection of NGF near the cardiac sympathetic ganglia could influence the innervation pattern, norepinephrine transporter (NET) gene expression, and improve the cardiac remodeling in experimental HF animals. In this study, we injected NGF into the scalenus medius muscles of Sprague-Dawley rats with abdominal aortic constriction (AC). The nerve innervated pattern, left ventricular morphology, and function following injection in rats with AC were investigated respectively by immunohistochemistry and echocardiography. Levels of mRNA expression of NET, growth associated protein 43 (GAP 43), NGF and its receptors TrkA and p75(NTR), and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) were measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The results showed that myocardial NGF mRNA levels were comparable in rats with AC. Short-term supplementation of exogenous NGF raised the myocardial NGF immunoreactivity, but did not cause hyperinnervation and NET mRNA upregulation in the AC rats. Furthermore, myocardial TrkA mRNA was found to be remarkably decreased and p75(NTR) mRNA was increased. Myocardial TrkA downregulation may play a beneficial effect for avoiding the hyperinnervation, and it is reasonable to postulate that p75(NTR) can function as an NGF receptor in the absence of TrkA. Interestingly, local NGF administration into the neck muscles near the ganglia could attenuate cardiac remodeling and downregulate BNP mRNA. These results suggest that exogenous NGF can reach the target tissue along the axons anterogradely, and improve the cardiac remodeling.

Abstract
In order to investigate the physiological effects of airport noise exposure on organisms, in this study, we exposed Sprague-Dawley rats in soundproof chambers to previously recorded aircraft-related noise for 65 d. For comparison, we also used unexposed control rats. Noise was arranged according to aircraft flight schedules and was adjusted to its weighted equivalent continuous perceived noise levels (L(WECPN)) of 75 and 80 dB for the two experimental groups. We examined rat behaviors through an open field test and measured the concentrations of plasma norepinephrine (NE) by high performance liquid chromatography-fluorimetric detection (HPLC-FLD). We also examined the morphologies of neurons and synapses in the temporal lobe by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Our results showed that rats exposed to airport noise of 80 dB had significantly lower line crossing number (P<0.05) and significantly longer center area duration (P<0.05) than control animals. After 29 d of airport noise exposure, the concentration of plasma NE of exposed rats was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.05). We also determined that the neuron and synapsis of the temporal lobe of rats showed signs of damage after aircraft noise of 80 dB exposure for 65 d. In conclusion, exposing rats to long-term aircraft noise affects their behaviors, plasma NE levels, and cell morphology of the temporal lobe.

Abstract
Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is affected by ectopic beats. An efficient method was proposed to deal with the ectopic beats. The method was based on trend correlation of the heart timing signal. Predictor of R-R interval (RRI) value at ectopic beat time was constructed by the weight calculation and the slope estimation of preceding normal RRI. The type of ectopic beat was detected and replaced by the predictor of RRI. The performance of the simulated signal after ectopic correction was tested by the standard value using power spectrum density (PSD) estimation, whereas the results of clinical data with ectopic beats were compared with the adjacent ectopic-free data. The result showed the frequency indexes after ectopy corrected had less error than other methods with the test of simulated signal and clinical data. It indicated our method could improve the PSD estimation in HRV analysis. The method had advantages of high accuracy and real time properties to recover the sinus node modulation.
