Abstract
The Zingiberis Rhizoma - Jujubae Fructus herb pair (ZJHP) is a classic herb pair in traditional Chinese medicine. The herb pair shows the effect of dispelling cold, harmonizing the middle and improving gastrointestinal function, and is widely used for patients with stomach cold syndrome (SCS), stomachache and anemofrigid cold. The gingerols, shogaols, flavonoids and triterpenic acids are the important bioactive ingredients of ZJHP. However, few pharmacokinetic studies have been investigated in vivo for the above compounds. To comprehend the kinetics of active components and promote their curative application, a fast and sensitive ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method was established for simultaneous determination of 12 analytes in normal and SCS rats in this study. The results showed that the pharmacokinetic parameters (Cmax, Tmax, t1/2z, MRT0-t, AUC0-t and AUC0-∞) in SCS model were significantly different from those in normal rats. In addition, the pharmacokinetics of rats given ZJHP were also varied from single herb oral administration, especially in model condition. These results indicated that the in vivo processes of the above analytes changed under pathological conditions and the compatibility of the herb pair could significantly influence the absorption of active components, which might provide an insight and further supports for the clinical application of ZJHP.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a worldwide public health issue, but a widely accepted therapy is still lacking until now. Anthocyanins are natural flavonoid compounds that possess various bioactivities, but their applications are limited due to their low bioavailability and stability. Acylated anthocyanins are reported to show higher stability, whereas their effects on NAFLD are still unclear. Herein, pelargonidin-3-O-(6''-acetyl)-glucoside (Ace Pg3G) was found to dose-dependently reduce intracellular lipid droplets and triglycerides, and improve cellular oxidative stress that accompanied lipid deposition. Besides, Ace Pg3G was proved to activate AMPK phosphorylation, thus stimulating AMPK-mediated lysosome-autophagy pathway to eliminate overloaded lipid. Further study unveiled that Ace Pg3G regulated genes related to lipid metabolism downstream of AMPK to inhibit lipid synthesis and accelerate lipid oxidation. Overall, this study provided the first evidence, to our best knowledge, that Ace Pg3G ameliorated free fatty acid-induced lipid deposition in hepatocytes through regulating AMPK-mediated autophagy pathways and redox state.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Banxia Xiexin decoction (BXD) is a classic traditional Chinese medicine prescription for treating ulcerative colitis (UC). However, its potential mechanism of action is still unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY Reveal the correlation between the beneficial impacts of BXD on UC and the composition of the gut microbiota. MATERIALS AND METHODS The major constituents of BXD were identified using the HPLC-DAD technique. An experimental model of UC was induced in male C57BL/6 mice by administering dextran sodium sulfate (DSS). A total of 48 mice were divided into different groups, including control, model, high-dose BXD treatment, medium-dose BXD treatment, low-dose BXD treatment, and a group treated with 5-amino acid salicylic acid (5-ASA). Body weight changes and disease activity index (DAI) scores were documented; colon length, colon index, spleen index, and thymus index scores were determined; myeloperoxidase (MPO) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) activities were assessed; and histological staining with hematoxylin-eosin and alcian blue/phosphate Schiff was performed. The immunofluorescence technique was employed to examine the presence of ZO-1 and occludin in the colon tissue. 16S rRNA sequencing was employed to assess the gut microbiota's diversity and metabolomics was utilized to examine alterations in metabolites within the gut microbiota. The impact of BXD on the gut microbiota was confirmed through fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). RESULTS BXD exhibited a positive impact on UC mice, particularly in the high-dose BXD treatment group. The BXD group experienced weight recovery, decreased DAI scores, improved colon length, and restored of spleen and thymus index scores compared to the DSS group. Additionally, BXD alleviated colon damage and the inflammatory response while restoring intestinal barrier function. FMT in BXD-treated mice also showed therapeutic effects in UC mice. At the phylum level, the relative abundance of Desulfobacterota, Deferribacterota and Actinobacteriota increased; at the genus level, g__norank__f__Muribaculaceae, Dubosiella, Akkermansia, and Lactobacillus increased, whereas Faecalibaculum, Alloprevotella, Turicibacter, and g_Paraprevotella decreased. g__norank_f__Muribaculaceae was positively correlated with body weight and colon length and negatively with colon index scores, splenic index scores, and MPO levels; Alloprevotella was positively correlated with splenic index scores, histological scores, and TNF-α levels and negatively with thymus index scores and thymus index scores. Faecalibaculum was positively correlated with colon index scores and MPO levels. Metabolic investigations revealed 58 potential indicators, primarily associated with the metabolism of amino acids, purines, and lipids. Alloprevotella, g_Paraprevotella, and Bifidobacterium were strongly associated with metabolic pathways. CONCLUSION BXD showed beneficial therapeutic effects in UC mice. The mechanism may be by promoting the balance and variety of gut microbiota, as well as regulating the metabolism of amino acids, purines, and lipids.

Abstract
Xiaochaihu granules (XCHG) are extensively used to treat fever. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. This study aimed to explore the potential of XCHG in mitigating yeast-induced fever and the underlying metabolic pathways. The chemical composition of XCHG was ascertained using ultra-fast liquid chromatography/quadrupole-time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UFLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS), followed by integrated network analysis to predict potential targets. We then conducted experimental validation using pharmacological assays and metabolomics analysis in a yeast-induced mouse fever model. The study identified 133 compounds in XCHG, resulting in the development of a comprehensive network of herb-compound-biological functional modules. Subsequently, molecular dynamic (MD) simulations confirmed the stability of the complexes, including γ-aminobutyric acid B receptor 2 (GABBR2)-saikosaponin C, prostaglandin endoperoxide synthases (PTGS2)-lobetyolin, and NF-κB inhibitor IκBα (NFKBIA)-glycyrrhizic acid. Animal experiments demonstrated that XCHG reduced yeast-induced elevation in NFKBIA's downstream regulators [interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-8], inhibited PTGS2 activity, and consequently decreased prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels. XCHG also downregulated the levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH), and adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH). These corroborated the network analysis results indicating XCHG's effectiveness against fever in targeting NFKBIA, PTGS2, and GABBR2. The hypothalamus metabolomics analysis identified 14 distinct metabolites as potential antipyretic biomarkers of XCHG. In conclusion, our findings suggest that XCHG alleviates yeast-induced fever by regulating inflammation/immune responses, neuromodulation, and metabolism modules, providing a scientific basis for the anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties of XCHG.

Abstract
SCOPE Chronic liver diseases are clinically silent and responsible for significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Jujube has displayed various biological activities. Here, the therapeutic effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus)-fermented jujube juice (FJJ) and the possible mechanism against chronic liver injury (CLI) in mice are further studied. METHODS AND RESULTS After the CCl4 -induced CLI mice are separately treated with L. acidophilus (LA), unfermented jujube juice (UFJJ), and FJJ, FJJ but not LA or UFJJ suppresses the liver index. By using H&E staining, immunofluorescence staining, RT-PCR, and western blotting, it is shown that LA, UFJJ, and FJJ intervention ameliorate hepatocyte necrosis, inhibit the mRNA levels of pro-inflammatory (NLRP3, Caspase-1, IL-1β, and TNF-α) and fibrosis-associated factors (TGF-β1, LXRα, and MMP2). Also, FJJ displays significant protection against mucosal barrier damage in CLI mice. Among the three interventions, FJJ exhibits the best therapeutic effect, followed by UFJJ and LA. Furthermore, FJJ improves dysbiosis in CLI mice. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that FJJ exhibits a protective effect against CCl4 -induced CLI mice by inhibiting apoptosis and oxidative stress, regulating liver lipid metabolism, and improving gut microecology. Jujube juice fermentation with L. acidophilus can be a food-grade supplement in treating CLI and related liver diseases.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The incidence of gastric carcinoma (GC) is increasing rapidly. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) plays a unique role in the treatment of GC. At present, Gancao Xiexin Decoction (GCXXD) has been proved to have a good therapeutic effect on diseases of the spleen and stomach system, but relevant molecular mechanisms remain incompletely explained. AIM OF STUDY The mechanism of GCXXD for GC was investigated by network pharmacology and verified by cell experiments. MATERIALS AND METHODS Firstly, the public database was used to identify the core targets and key pathways of GCXXD in treating GC, followed by molecular docking and survival analysis. Subsequently, the effects of GCXXD on human gastric cancer AGS and HGC-27 cells were confirmed by a series of experiments, such as CCK-8, colony formation, apoptosis, cell cycle, wound scratch assay, transwell chamber assay, qRT-PCR and Western blot. RESULTS This study identified quercetin, wogonin, kaempferol, baicalein, sitosterol and beta-sitosterol as key ingredients, along with AKT1, TP53, JUN, STAT3, TNF, MAPK3, HSP90AA1 and EGFR as co targets, and the JAK/STAT signalling pathway as the key pathway. The experimental results showed that GCXXD inhibited the growth of GC cells, increased the apoptosis rate and the ratio of G0/G1 phase cells, and weakened the clone formation rate and inhibited cell migration and invasion. It also reduces the expression of core target genes and downregulates the expression of JAK2, p-JAK2, STAT3, and p-STAT3 proteins. CONCLUSION GCXXD inhibits GC cell growth, reduces clonogenic capacity, induces apoptosis, blocks the cell cycle, and decreases cell migration and invasion rates by inhibiting the JAK2/STAT3 signalling pathway.

Abstract
An on-line enrichment and separation of multiple derivatized monosaccharides with cyclodextrin-encapsulated sweeping (CDES) by micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) was presented. Five monosaccharides (L-(-)-Mannose, D-(+)-Glucose, D-(-)-Ribose, D-(+)-Xylose, and L-(+)-Rhamnose) were derivatized with 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, subsequently concentrated and separated by MEKC. The optimized conditions were as follows: 50 mM phosphoric acid (PA), 100 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and 30 % (v/v) methanol in background solution; 140 s injection of sample solution containing 50 mM CD and 100 mM PA, followed by 90 s injection of 40 mM SDS solution. Under the optimized conditions, the correlation coefficients ≥ 0.9953, and the limits of detection ranged from 4.2 to 7.4 ng/mL. Relative standard deviation values ranged from 0.24-4.23 %, and sensitivity enrichment factors were in the range of 53-82 compared with typical injection (50 mbar, 3 s). The CDES-MEKC method was successfully applied to Jujube with good recoveries of 84.22-104.33 %. The method provides new ideas for the on-line enrichment and detection of trace monosaccharides and even other target analytes in foods with complex matrices.

Abstract
One of the most important qualities of jujube fruit is its color. Chlorophyll, carotenoid, and anthocyanin all play important roles in the coloring of jujube fruit. However, few studies have focused on the pigment molecular mechanism. In the present study, jujube peels of 'Sanbianhong' in three growth stages were evaluated for their gene expression characteristics and gene regulation related to pigment formation using the transcriptome sequencing analysis. A total of 84.86 Gb of clean data were obtained in the analysis. In the FS1 vs. FS3, FS1 vs. FS5, and FS3 vs. FS5, 4,530, 11,012, and 9,072 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, respectively. The inter-group screening among the three comparisons yielded 1430 common DEGs. Among these DEGs, 27, 16, and 28 genes were enriched in chlorophyll, carotenoid, and anthocyanin metabolic pathways, respectively. Twelve genes were chosen at random, and the accuracy of the transcriptome data were confirmed using qRT-PCR. The molecular mechanism underlying the pigmentation of jujube fruit was elucidated at the transcriptome level, which would provide a scientific basis for the subsequent functional studies on the color-regulating genes of jujube fruits.

Abstract
To discriminate the aroma-active compounds in dried jujube slices through microwave-dried treatments and understand their sensory attributes, odor activity value (OAV) and detection frequency analysis (DFA) combined with sensory analysis and analyzed through partial least squares regression analysis (PLSR) were used collaboratively. A total of 21 major aromatic active compounds were identified, among which 4-hexanolide, 4-cyclopentene-1,3-dione, 5-methyl-2(5H)-furanone, 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)furanone, 3,5-dihydroxy-2-methyl-4-pyrone were first confirmed as aromatic compounds of jujube. Sensory evaluation revealed that the major characteristic aromas of dried jujube slices were caramel flavor, roasted sweet flavor, and bitter and burnt flavors. The PLSR results showed that certain compounds were related to specific taste attributes. 2,3-butanedione and acetoin had a significant positive correlation with the roasted sweet attribute. On the other hand, γ-butyrolactone, 4-cyclopentene-1,3-dione, and 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)furanone had a significant positive impact on the caramel attributes. For the bitter attribute, 2-acetylfuran and 5-methyl-2(5H)-furanone were positively correlated. Regarding the burnt flavor, 5-methyl-2-furancarboxaldehyde and 3,5-dihydroxy-2-methyl-4-pyrone were the most influential odor-active compounds. Finally, 2-furanmethanol and 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one were identified as the primary sources of the burnt and bitter flavors. Importantly, this work could provide a theoretical basis for aroma control during dried jujube slices processing.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The cause of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder, remains unclear. Banhasasim-tang (BHSST), a traditional herbal medicines mixture, mainly used to treat GI-related diseases, may have a potential in IBS treatment. IBS is characterized by abdominal pain as the main clinical symptom, which seriously affects the quality of life. AIM OF THE STUDY We conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of BHSST and its mechanisms of action in treating IBS. MATERIALS AND METHODS We evaluated the efficacy of BHSST in a zymosan-induced diarrhea-predominant animal model of IBS. Electrophysiological methods were used to confirm modulation of transient receptor potential (TRP) and voltage-gated Na+ (NaV) ion channels, which are associated mechanisms of action. RESULTS Oral administration of BHSST decreased colon length, increased stool scores, and increased colon weight. Weight loss was also minimized without affecting food intake. In mice administered with BHSST, the mucosal thickness was suppressed, making it similar to that of normal mice, and the degree of tumor necrosis factor-α was severely reduced. These effects were similar to those of the anti-inflammatory drug-sulfasalazine-and antidepressant-amitriptyline. Moreover, pain-related behaviors were substantially reduced. Additionally, BHSST inhibited TRPA1, NaV1.5, and NaV1.7 ion channels associated with IBS-mediated visceral hypersensitivity. CONCLUSIONS In summary, the findings suggest that BHSST has potential beneficial effects on IBS and diarrhea through the modulation of ion channels.

Abstract
Wax apple (Syzygium samarangense) has received growing research interest for its high nutritional and medicinal value due to its constituents such as polysaccharide, organic acids, flavonoids, minerals, and other substances. In this study, wax apple polysaccharide (WAP) was isolated from this plant and its protective effect against ethyl carbamate (EC)-induced oxidative damage was evaluated in human hepatocytes (L02 cells). Firstly, a series of analyses such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), high-performance gel permeation chromatography (HPGPC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) were conducted to identify the structure of WAP. Thereafter, in vitro cell experiments were performed to verify the protective effects of WAP against EC-induced cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and oxidative damage in L02 cells. Our results revealed that WAP is composed of mannose, rhamnose, glucuronic acid, galacturonic acid, glucose, galactose, arabinose, and fucose in a molar ratio of 2.20:3.94:4.45:8.56:8.86:30.82:39.78:1.48. Using a combination of methylation and NMR spectroscopic analysis, the primary structure of WAP was identified as Araf-(1→, Glcp-(1→, →2)-Araf-(1→, →3)-Galp-(1→, →3)-Araf-(1→, and →6)-Galp-(1→. Cell experiments indicated that WAP exhibited significant protective effects on EC-treated L02 cells via suppressing cytotoxicity and genotoxicity, reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and O2•- formation, as well as improving mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and glutathione (GSH). In a nutshell, WAP has the potential as an important therapeutic agent or supplement for hepatic oxidative damage. Meanwhile, further studies are needed to prove the above effects in vivo at the biological and clinical levels.

Abstract
Background Growing data indicate that the gut microbiome may contribute to the rising incidence of hyperlipoidemia. Jujube vinegar lowers lipids, protects the liver, and reduces oxidant capacity, however, it is unknown whether this is due to the gut flora. To further research the role of the gut microbiome in treating hyperlipidemia with jujube vinegar, we looked into whether the action of jujube vinegar is related to the regulation of the gut microbiome. Method Thirty male ICR mice were used. The control group (CON), the high-fat diet (HFD) group, and the vinegar group (VIN) each consisted of ten female ICR mice fed consistently for eight weeks. For each treatment, we kept track of body mass, liver index, blood lipid levels, and oxidative stress state. We also analyzed mouse feces using high-throughput 16srRNA sequencing to examine the relationship between jujube vinegar's hypolipidemic effect and antioxidant activity and how it affects the gut microbiome. Results Jujube vinegar reduced body weight by 19.92%, serum TC, TG, and LDL-C by 25.09%, 26.83%, and 11.66%, and increased HDL-C by 1.44 times, serum AST and ALT decreased by 26.36% and 34.87% respectively, the blood levels of SOD and GSH-Px increased 1.35-fold and 1.60-fold, respectively. While blood MDA decreased 33.21%, the liver's SOD and GSH-Px increased 1.32-fold and 1.60-fold, respectively, and the liver's MDA decreased 48.96% in HFD mice. The gut microbiome analysis revealed that jujube vinegar increased the intestinal microbial ASV count by 13.46%, and the F/B (Firmicutes/Bacteroidota) ratio by 2.08-fold in high-fat diet mice, and the proportion was significantly inversely correlated with TC, TG, and LDL-C and positively correlated with HDL-C. Biomarker bacteria in the vinegar group included Lactobacillaceae and Lactobacillus, which correlated favorably with HDL-C, SOD, and GSH-Px and negatively with LDL-C, TC, and TG. Jujube vinegar increased the abundance of the Aerobic, Contains Mobile Elements, and Facultative Aerobic by 2.84 times, 1.45 times, and 2.40 times, while decreased the abundance of Potential pathogens by 44.72%, according to the BugBase study. The KEGG analysis showed that jujube vinegar was predominantly reflected in the biological process of gene function and related to signal transduction pathways, including glucagon signaling system, HIF-1 signaling pathway, adipocytokine signaling pathway, amino sugar, and nucleotide sugar metabolism, and so forth. Conclusion Based on these findings, jujube vinegar may reduce hyperlipoidemia by controlling the gut microbiome and enhancing antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
Danggui Sini is a traditional Chinese medicine prescription for treating peripheral nerve injury (PNI). We studied the mechanisms of this decoction through network pharmacology analysis and molecular docking. Using R language and Perl software, the active components and predicted targets of Danggui Sini, as well as the related gene targets of PNI, were mined through TCMSP, GeneCards, OMIM, TTD, and DrugBank. The network diagram of active components and intersection targets was constructed using Cytoscape software and the STRING database. The CytoNCA plug-in was used to screen out the core compounds and key targets. The genes were analyzed for Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment. AutoDock was used to analyze the molecular docking of key targets and core compounds of diseases. The drug component disease target regulatory network showed that the key components included quercetin, kaempferol, naringenin, and licochalcone A, which play key roles in the whole network and may be the primary compounds associated with the action of Danggui Sini against PNI. PPI network topology analysis showed high degree values for RELA, JUN, MAPK1, RB1, and FOS. Enrichment analysis showed that the core targets of Danggui Sini participated in pathways associated with neurogenesis-multiple diseases. Molecular docking showed that the active ingredients in Danggui Sini had a good binding ability with key targets. We conclude that many active components of Danggui Sini play therapeutic roles in PNI treatment by regulating RELA, JUN, MAPK1, RB1, and FOS, and multiple other targets in inflammation, immunity, and lipid metabolism.

Abstract
Jujube fruit was well-loved and praised by the broad masses due to its delicious taste, abundant nutritional value, and medicinal properties. Few studies reported the quality evaluation and gut microbiota regulation effect of polysaccharides of jujube fruits from different producing areas. In the present study, multi-level fingerprint profiling, including polysaccharides, oligosaccharides, and monosaccharides, was established for the quality evaluation of polysaccharides from jujube fruits. For polysaccharides, the total content in jujube fruits ranged from 1.31% to 2.22%, and the molecular weight distribution (MWD) ranged from 1.14 × 105 to 1.73 × 106 Da. The MWD fingerprint profiling of polysaccharides from eight producing areas was similar, but the profile of infrared spectroscopy (IR) showed differentiation. The characteristic signals were screened and used to establish a discrimination model for the identification of jujube fruits from different areas, and the accuracy of identification reached 100.00%. For oligosaccharides, the main components were galacturonic acid polymers (DP, 2-4), and the profile of oligosaccharides exhibited high similarity. The monosaccharides, GalA, Glc, and Ara, were the primary monosaccharides. Although the fingerprint of monosaccharides was semblable, the composing proportion of monosaccharides revealed significant differences. In addition, the polysaccharides of jujube fruits could regulate the gut microbiota composition and possess potential therapeutic effects on dysentery and nervous system diseases.

Abstract
Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) and its wild ancestor, sour jujube (Z. acidojujuba C.Y. Cheng & M.J. Liu), is a Ziziphus genus in the Rhamnaceae family. ZJ and ZA are rich in a variety of active ingredients, with triterpenoids being a unique active ingredient, which are present in the fruit, leaves, branches, and roots. More than 120 triterpenoids have been identified in ZJ and ZA, and have various biological activities. For example, betulinic and ursolic acids have anticancer, antioxidant, antibacterial and antiviral activities. ceanothic, alphitolic, and zizyberanalic acids possess anti-inflammatory activities. The MVA pathway is a synthetic pathway for triterpenoids in ZJ and ZA, and 23 genes of the MVA pathway are known to regulate triterpene synthesis in ZJ and ZA. In order to better understand the basic situation of triterpenoids in ZJ and ZA, this paper reviews the types, content dynamic changes, activities, pharmacokinetics, triterpenoid synthesis pathways, and the effects of domestication on triterpenoids in ZJ and ZA, and provides some ideas for the future research of triterpenoids in ZJ and ZA. In addition, there are many types of ZJ and ZA triterpenoids, and most of the studies on their activities are on lupane- and ursane-type triterpenes, while the activities of the ceanothane-type and saponin are less studied and need additional research.

Abstract
Background
Moju is a traditional rice beverage local to Jeonju with an alcohol content of 1–2%. Moju is made by boiling makgeolli with several kinds of medicinal herbs, such as ginger, jujube and cinnamon. The raw materials used in Moju are well known for their physiological and functional effects. Although Moju is made with functional raw materials, the operational role of Moju has not yet been reported.
Objectives
The aim of this study was to identify the anti-melanogenic effects of Moju in B16F10 melanoma cells and explore the potential mechanisms.
Results
In this study, we investigated the antioxidant activity and anti-melanogenic effect of Moju. Moju showed no toxicity to HEK293T or B16F10 cells. The antioxidant activity of Moju was confirmed by its ability to increase radical scavenging activity. Moju decreased tyrosinase activity in a concentration-dependent manner. At the cellular level, Moju reduced melanin synthesis and the expression of proteins involved in melanin synthesis at concentrations of 100, 250, and 500 μg/mL in B16F10 cells. In addition, Moju inhibited the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK).
Conclusions
These results provide evidence that Moju has antioxidant activity and anti-melanogenic effect that occur through regulation of the ERK pathway. Although further research is needed to elucidate the specific mechanism and functional components, the ability of Moju to inhibit melanin synthesis by altering tyrosinase activation suggest that it can be used as a functional whitening ingredient.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the major causes of death worldwide. The repercussions of conventional therapeutic approaches present a challenge in the delivery of new effective treatments. Thus, more attention is being awarded to natural products, mainly honey. Honey could be the basis for the development of new therapies for cancer patients. The aim of this study is to assess the phytochemical profiling, antioxidant, drug-likeness properties, and anticancer activity of Ziziphus honey (ZH) derived from the Hail region of Saudi Arabia. The phytochemical profiling using high resolution-liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HR-LCMS) revealed 10 compounds belonging to several familial classes and one tripeptide. Potential antioxidant activity was noted as assessed by DPPH (IC50 0.670 mg/mL), ABTS (IC50 3.554 mg/mL), and β-carotene (IC50 > 5 mg/mL). The ZH exerted a notable cytotoxic effect in a dose-dependent manner against three cancer cell lines: lung (A549), breast (MCF-7), and colon (HCT-116), with respective IC50 values of 5.203%, 6.02%, and 7.257%. The drug-likeness investigation unveiled that most of the identified compounds meet Lipinski’s rule. The molecular docking analysis revealed interesting antioxidant and anticancer activities for most targeted proteins and supported the in vitro findings. The Miraxanthin-III compound exhibited the most stabilized interaction. This study provides deeper insights on ZH as prominent source of bioactive compounds with potent antioxidant and anticancer effects.

Abstract
A homogalacturonan pectin (HG, designated as WJP-F80) was extracted from the peel of winter jujube (Zizyphus jujuba Mill. Cv. Dongzao) and separated via ethanol-graded precipitation. The structural and conformational features were elucidated through HPAEC-PAD, GC-MS, 2D NMR, and HPSEC-MALLS studies. In vivo assessments were carried out to evaluate the hepatoprotective effects of WJP-F80 against CCl4-induced injury of mice. Results showed that WJP-F80 was a linear 1,4-α-galacturonan with partially methyl-esterified at O-6 of GalpA and occasionally acetylation. The Mw of WJP-F80 was determined as 45.3 kDa, the polydispersity was calculated as 1.56, and the Rg was measured as 22.7 nm in 0.1 M NaNO3. The conformational analysis revealed that WJP-F80 exhibited as rigid stiff chain in low Mw range, while aggregation by self-assembly of HG chains lead to high Mw and random coil conformation. In vivo studies indicated that WJP-F80 can protect the livers of mice from acute injury induced via CCl4 by decreasing the serum biochemical markers of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to normal levels. This work provides a theoretical basis for the value-added deep processing of winter jujube.

Abstract
Background As a chronic joint condition, osteoarthritis (OA) is a common problem among older people. Pain, aching, stiffness, swelling, decreased flexibility, reduced function, and disability are the symptoms of arthritis. Objectives In this study, we tested the extracts of Ziziphus jujuba (ZJE) and Boswellia serrata (BSE) to reduce OA symptoms as an alternative treatment. Methods NMRI mice were administered an intra-articular injection of monosodium iodoacetate (MIA; 1 mg/10 mL) in the left knee joint cavity for the induction of OA. Hydroalcoholic extracts of ZJE (250 and 500 mg/kg), BSE (100 and 200 mg/kg), and combined ZJE and BSE were orally administered daily for 21 days. Following behavioral tests, plasma samples were collected to detect inflammatory factors. To screen for general toxicity, acute oral toxicity was evaluated. Results Oral administration of all the hydroalcoholic extracts significantly increased the locomotor activity, pixel values of the foot-print area, paw withdrawal threshold, the latency of the withdrawal response to heat stimulation, and decreased the difference between pixel values of hind limbs compared to the vehicle group. Also, the elevated levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α were reduced. As tested in this study, ZJE and BSE were practically nontoxic and had a high degree of safety. Conclusions This study demonstrated that the oral administration of ZJE and BSE slows the progression of OA through anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory properties. Oral co-administration of ZJE and BSE extracts can be used as herbal medicine to inhibit OA progression.

Abstract
From Ziziphus Jujuba cv. Muzao fruit, a new polysaccharide (PZMP3-1) with high molecular weight was isolated. Constructional characterization revealed that PZMP3-1 comprized 2.56 rhamnose, 7.70 arabinoses, 3.73 galactose, and 6.73 galactose, and it has a 241 kDa average molecular weight. The principal structural components of PZMP3-1 were 1,2,4 and 1,4-linked GalpA, 1,4-linked Galp, 1,3 and 1,5-linked Araf, and 1-linked Rhap based on methylation and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) analyses. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) structural analysis of PZMP3-1 revealed a tangled and branching pattern. Overall, these structural results suggested that PZMP3-1 could have unique bioactivities and be widely used in nutritional supplements.

Abstract
Pretreatment combined with vacuum freeze-drying is an effective technique to extend the storage period of jujube fruits and reduce energy consumption and cost; however, the effects of pretreatment on the quality characteristics of jujube during vacuum freeze-drying remain unknown. In this study, the effects of cold plasma (CP), high hydrostatic pressure (HHP), ultrasound (US), high-pressure carbon dioxide (HPCD), and conventional blanching (BC) as pretreatments on the performance of vacuum freeze-dried jujube slices were investigated. The results indicated that the application of different pretreatments decreased the water activity and increased the rehydration capacity, owing to the pretreatment etching larger and more porous holes in the microstructure. Freeze-dried jujube slices pretreated with HPCD retained most of their quality characteristics (color, hardness, and volatile compounds), followed by the HHP- and US-pretreated samples, whereas samples pretreated with BC showed the greatest deterioration in quality characteristics, and hence, BC is not recommended as a pretreatment for freeze-dried jujube slices. Sensory evaluation based on hedonic analysis showed that jujube slices pretreated with HPCD and US were close to the control sample and scored highest. Compared to other pretreated samples and the control, freeze-dried jujube slices pretreated with HPCD showed the least degradation (4.93%) of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), the highest contents of total phenol, total flavonoid, and l-ascorbic acid, and the highest antioxidant capacity. Partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was performed to screen all the quality characteristic data of different pretreated samples, and 12 volatile compounds, including ethyl hexanoate and (E)-2-hexenal, along with color, l-ascorbic acid content, and cAMP content were found suitable to be used as discriminators for pretreated freeze-dried jujube slices. Therefore, non-thermal pretreatments, including HPCD, US, and HHP pretreatments, are promising techniques for the vacuum freeze-drying of jujube products.

Abstract
Background: Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a metabolic disease caused by reduced excretion or increased production of uric acid. This research aims to study the practical components, active targets, and potential mechanism of the “Radix ginseng (RG)-Ziziphus jujube (ZJ)” herb pair through molecular docking, network pharmacology, and animal experiments.Methods: The potential targets of “Radix ginseng (RG)-Ziziphus jujube (ZJ)” herb pair were obtained from the TCMSP database. The therapeutic targets of HUA were acquired from the GendCards, OMIM, PharmGkb, and TTD databases. Protein-protein interaction network (PPI) was constructed in the STRING 11.0 database. The David database was used for enrichment analysis. Molecular Docking was finished by the AutoDock Vina. And we employed Radix ginseng and Ziziphus jujube as raw materials, which would develop a new functional food fresh ginseng paste (FGP) after boiling. In addition, benzbromarone (Ben) (7.8 mg/kg) and allopurinol (All) (5 mg/kg) were used as positive drugs to evaluate the hyperuricemia induced by FGP (400 and 800 mg/kg) potassium oxazine (PO) (100 mg/kg) and hypoxanthine (HX) (500 mg/kg) on mice.Results: The results showed that 25 targets in the “RG-ZJ” herb pair interacted with hyperuricemia. Then protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis showed that TNF, IL-1β, and VEGFA were core genes. KEGG enrichment analysis showed that the Toll-like receptor signaling pathway and IL-17 signaling pathway were mainly involved. Meantime, animal experiments showed that FGP could improve the HUA status of mice by reducing serum UA BUN, XO, and liver XO levels (p < 0.05, p < 0.01). Furthermore, we analyzed the main ingredients of FGP by HPLC. We found that the main ingredients of FGP had solid binding activity to the core target of HUA by molecular docking.Conclusion: This study explored the active ingredients and targets of the “RG-ZJ” herb pair on HUA through network pharmacology, molecular docking, and animal experiments. It revealed the improvement of FGP in mice with HUA.

Abstract
Jujube pulp separated from Ziziphus jujube is often discarded after processing, resulting in a serious waste of resources and environmental pollution. Herein, Ziziphus jujube pulp was used as a raw material for vinegar fermentation. To investigate the dynamic distribution of microorganisms and flavor substances in ZJV, correlations between environmental variables (e.g., total acid, reducing sugar, temperature) and flavor substances (organic acids, amino acids, volatile substances) and microorganisms were analyzed. Physicochemical indicators (temperature, total acid, alcohol) were the main factors affecting ZJV fermentation. The middle and later stages of ZJV fermentation were the periods showing the largest accumulation of flavor substances. Organic acids (acetic acid, malic acid, citric acid, lactic acid), amino acids (Asp, Glu, Arg) and volatile substances (ethyl phenylacetate, phenethyl alcohol) were important odor-presenting substances in ZJV. In the bacterial community, the Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) with an average relative abundance of more than 10% in at least one fermentation stage were mainly Acetobacter, Lactobacillus and Saccharopolyspora, while it was Thermomyces in the fungal community. Pearson correlation coefficients showed that Penicillium, Lactobacillus and Acetobacter were the core microorganisms, implying that these microorganisms contributed to the flavor formation greatly in ZJV fermentation. This study reveals the correlation between physicochemical indexes and flavor substances and microorganisms in ZJV fermentation. The results of the study can provide a theoretical basis for the development of the ZJV industry.

Abstract
Liver cancer is one of the most common cancers, with increasing trends in incidence and mortality. A novel acidic polysaccharide (BJP-2) obtained from blackened jujube was extracted by hot water followed by chromatographic purification employing DEAE-cellulose 52 and Sephadex G-100 column. And then BJP-2 was identified by SEC-MALLS-RI, GC-MS, methylation and NMR for the following characteristics: molecular weight of 6.42 × 104 Da, monosaccharide composition of glucuronic acid (GalA), arabinose (Ara), galactose (Gal), rhamnose (Rha), xylose (Xyl), glucuronic acid (GlcA), glucose (Glc), fucose (Fuc) and mannose (Man) with the percentage of 39.78, 31.93, 16.86, 6.43, 1.86, 1.28, 1.02, 0.61, and 0.23%, as well as the main chain of → 5)-α-L-Araf (1 → 4)-β-D-Gal(1 → , T-α-L-Araf (1 → 4)-β-D-Gal(1 → , and → 4)-α-L-6MeGalAp(1 → . The effect of BJP-2 on the apoptosis of HepG2 cells and its anti-tumor mechanism were further explored. The analysis by MTT and flow cytometry showed that BJP-2 suppressed cell proliferation by inducing apoptosis in a concentration-dependent manner. Cell scratching and Transwell revealed that BJP-2 was able to block the invasion and metastasis of tumor cells. Western blot results demonstrated that BJP-2 exhibited antitumor activity through a mitochondria-dependent pathway, as evidenced by overexpression of Bax, Cleaved Caspase-3/Caspase-3 and Cleaved Caspase-9/Caspase-9 and downregulation of Bcl-2. Therefore, BJP-2 has broad research prospects as a tumor preventive or therapeutic agent.

Abstract
Sorbets are healthy ice cream alternatives and desired frozen desserts by vegetarians and vegans. This study focuses on assessing the effects of sorbet recipe alteration through the addition of different percentages of Zizyphus jujuba powder. Stevia rebaudiana was used as a sugar substituent. A control sample and five variables were developed. Peaches from the “Laskava” (native Bulgarian) variety were used as the main ingredient. The new sorbet matrices were characterized based on their moisture and ash content, overrun, melting behavior, melting rate, water holding capacity, pH, nutritional data, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, vitamin C content, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. The microbial load and CIELAB color of the sorbet alternatives was also evaluated. A sensory evaluation revealed the most preferred variant. Panelists evaluated the appearance (n = 6), aroma (n = 5), flavor (n = 5), mouthfeel (n = 7), and aftertaste (n = 5). The soluble solids content varied from 17.50 to 33.03%, the ash content from 0.36 to 5.21%, the moisture content from 63.77 to 80.21%. The studied sorbet matrices have an overrun in the range from 8.11 to 12.32%. Results showed that a potential for the development of peach sorbet matrices with added value and a reasonable consumer acceptability exists. Further research can perfect the recipe and provide a reference for other frozen desserts.

Abstract
Background. Chinese herbal formulas have certain effects on patients with breast cancer (BC). This article discussed the effect of Buqi Yangxue decoction on the immune function and nutritional status of BC patients and provided an evidence for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to improve the quality of life and curative effect of BC patients. Methods. 66 cases of BC patients were divided into control group (n =33) and Chinese herbal formula group (n =33). The control group was received with TE chemotherapy, and the Chinese herbal formula group was received with Buqi Yangxue decoction combined with TE chemotherapy. Nutritional status, immune function, TCM symptom quantitative score, and adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results. There was no difference in all indexes between the two groups before intervention. After 4 weeks, the nutritional indexes ALB, PA, TRF, and TP in Chinese herbal formula group were higher than those in control group, except HGb. CD3+, CD4+, and CD4+/CD8+ in both groups were sharply higher than before treatment, while CD8+ was dramatically lower, and the changes in Chinese herbal formula group were more obvious than those in control group. In Chinese herbal formula group, the levels of IgG, IgA, and IgM were sharply increased compared with control group. The TCM syndrome scores in both groups were decreased significantly after treatment, especially in Chinese herbal formula group. In addition, nausea and vomiting, inappetence, liver function impairment, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia occurred in both groups. There was no clear difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between Chinese herbal formula group and control group. Conclusion. Buqi Yangxue decoction can effectively improve the nutritional status and immune function of BC patients, which has important clinical significance for the later comprehensive treatment.

Abstract
Given the increasing demands for the quality and safety of animal-derived foods and the strict regulations on the use of antibiotics in animal feed, the use of functional feed additives has attracted increasing research and development. Jujube fruit is an energy-rich food with antioxidant, antibacterial, and antidiarrheal properties. With the expanding areas of cultivation to jujube trees and the intensive processing of jujube in Asia, especially in China, a large number of jujube by-products are produced. These by-products are used widely in animal feed for pigs, chicken, cattle, goats, and fish, as they improve growth performance, promote digestive tract health, and enhance the quality of animal products. This article reviews the nutritional components and benefits of jujube by-products and their potential incorporation in animal feed. The aim of this review is to introduce jujube by-products as a novel supplement or partial dietary replacement in the animal feed industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Jujube contains a waxy cuticle that acts as a barrier against fungal pathogens, prevents nutrition damage and leakage due to mechanical damage, and maintains water content. Chemical treatment before drying is the most commonly used method for whole jujube. Although chemical pretreatment can effectively enhance drying kinetics, it can lead to the loss of soluble nutrients and cause food safety issues due to chemical residues. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the effect of various pretreatments (cold plasma, cold plasma activated water, ultrasonics, thermosonication, and blanching) on the drying process and quality properties of whole jujube so as to find effective green alternatives to chemical pretreatment. RESULTS The application of chemical, cold plasma, and thermosonication significantly altered the surface morphology of jujube by etching larger cracks and holes, which can facilitate the transfer of moisture, thereby improving the drying rate and the effective diffusivity. Chemical, cold plasma, and thermosonication pretreatment reduced drying time by 18%, 12%, and 7% respectively, thereby increasing the content of total phenolics by 13%, 12%, and 6% respectively, and enhancing antioxidant capacity (ferric reducing antioxidant power) by 13%, 11%, and 3% respectively. In addition, chemical and cold plasma pretreatment reduced the generation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural by 25% and 15% respectively. CONCLUSION Cold plasma is a promising green alternative method to chemical pretreatment for drying processes of whole jujube. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
In this study, we tested tyrosinase and α-glucosidase effects of different extracts of Ziziphus jujuba fruits. The n-BuOH subextract inhibited both tyrosinase and α-glucosidase (IC50 = 18.82 ± 1.13 and 25.03 ± 0.77 µg/mL, respectively) better than the positive controls kojic acid and acarbose (IC50 = 58.26 ± 0.25 and 46.10 ± 2.3 µg/mL, respectively). Thus, the n-BuOH extract was selected for further phytochemical studies. Indole-3-lactic acid methylester, catechin, magnoflorine, kaempferol 3-O-α-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 6)-β-galactopyranoside, quercetin 3-O-α-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 6)-β-galactopyranoside, and procyanidin B4 were isolated from the extract. We tested α-glucosidase and tyrosinase inhibitory effects, as well as DNA nuclease effects of the isolated compounds. Procyanidin B4 exhibited the best activity against both tyrosinase and α-glucosidase (IC50 = 60.25 ± 0.88 and 170.18 ± 5.60 µg/mL, respectively). The isolates did not show any nuclease effect at increasing concentrations. Molecular docking studies provided insights into inhibition mechanisms of the isolates against tyrosinase and α-glucosidase at the molecular level.
