Abstract
Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARSs) catalyze the ligation of amino acids to their cognate transfer RNAs and are indispensable enzymes for protein biosynthesis in all the cells. Previously, ARSs were considered simply as housekeeping enzymes, however, they are now known to be involved in a variety of physiological and pathological processes, such as tumorigenesis, angiogenesis, and immune response. In this review, we summarize the role of ARSs in the digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, as well as the auxiliary organs such as the pancreas, liver, and the gallbladder. Furthermore, we specifically focus on the diagnostic and prognostic value of ARSs in cancers, aiming to provide new insights into the pathophysiological implications of ARSs in tumorigenesis.

Abstract
The current strategies to treat different kinds of cancer are mainly based on chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy. Unfortunately, these approaches are not specific and rather invasive as well. In this scenario, metal nano-shells, in particular gold-based nanoshells, offer interesting perspectives in the effort to counteract tumor cells, due to their unique ability to tune Surface Plasmon Resonance in different light-absorbing ranges. In particular, the Visible and Near Infrared Regions of the electromagnetic spectrum are able to penetrate through tissues. In this way, the light absorbed by the gold nanoshell at a specific wavelength is converted into heat, inducing photothermal ablation in treated cancer cells. Furthermore, inert gold shells can be easily functionalized with different types of molecules in order to bind cellular targets in a selective manner. This review summarizes the current state-of-art of nanosystems embodying gold shells, regarding methods of synthesis, bio-conjugations, bio-distribution, imaging and photothermal effects (in vitro and in vivo), providing new insights for the development of multifunctional antitumor drugs.

Abstract
Background Dermatomyositis, an inflammatory myopathy with cutaneous involvement, is associated with malignancy and often manifests paraneoplastically. While co-occurrence with small cell carcinoma is well attested, primary lung adenocarcinoma, which may present as focal ground-glass opacification on computed tomography of the thorax, is less frequently coincident. Case presentation We report the case of a 72-year-old female patient with dermatomyositis — treated with a combination of prednisone, methotrexate, and intravenous immunoglobulin — and an indolent, subsolid, non-hypermetabolic pulmonary lesion, which was determined to be invasive primary lung adenocarcinoma. Supporting a paraneoplastic basis, immunosuppressive therapy was discontinued following tumor excision without relapse of signs or symptoms of dermatomyositis. Conclusions While dermatomyositis prodromal to lung adenocarcinoma is not without precedent, association with an indolent, subsolid lesion has, to the best of our knowledge, not been reported. The case described herein illustrates the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion for malignancy in the setting of dermatomyositis.

Abstract
Dermatomyositis associated with lung cancer is uncommon. Dermatomyositis associated with small cell lung cancer is very rare and carries a poor prognosis. We present a case of a patient with dermatomyositis associated with small cell carcinoma of the lung and review the literature.

Abstract
The development of new immune treatment in oncology and particularly for lung cancer may induce new complications, particularly activation or reactivation of auto-immune diseases. In this context, a systematic review on the auto-immune paraneoplastic syndromes that can complicate lung cancer appears useful. This article is the fourth of a series of five and deals mainly with neurological paraneoplastic syndromes involving the peripheral nervous system and the neuromuscular junction and muscles.

Abstract
Anti-synthetase syndrome is an autoimmune condition, characterized by antibodies directed against an aminoacycl transfer RNA synthetase along with clinical features that can include interstitial lung disease, myositis, Raynaud's phenomenon, and arthritis. There is a higher prevalence and increased severity of interstitial lung disease in patients with anti-synthetase syndrome, as compared to dermatomyositis and polymyositis, inflammatory myopathies with which it may overlap phenotypically. Diagnosis is made by a multidisciplinary approach, synthesizing rheumatology and pulmonary evaluations, along with serologic, radiographic, and occasionally muscle and/or lung biopsy results. Patients with anti-synthetase syndrome often require multi-modality immunosuppressive therapy in order to control the muscle and/or pulmonary manifestations of their disease. The long-term care of these patients mandates careful attention to the adverse effects and complications of chronic immunosuppressive therapy, as well as disease-related sequelae that can include progressive interstitial lung disease necessitating lung transplantation, pulmonary hypertension, malignancy and decreased survival. It is hoped that greater awareness of the clinical features of this syndrome will allow for earlier diagnosis and appropriate treatment to improve outcomes in patients with anti-synthetase syndrome.

Abstract
Dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare autoimmune disease associated with manifestations of proximal muscle weakness and typical cutaneous skin rash. Patients with DM have a higher incidence rate of cancer, compared with the general population, since DM usually presents as a paraneoplastic syndrome. The present study reports a case of a 69-year-old male patient presenting with typical cutaneous rash and aggravating proximal muscle weakness for 3 months. When first admitted to the Department of Dermatology of Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University (Jinan, China), the patient was diagnosed with DM. Subsequently, chest computed tomography scan revealed a neoplasm located in the right upper lobe. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery right upper lobectomy and lymph node dissection were then performed. The patient experienced a fast recovery from the surgery. The removal of the neoplasm clearly improved the symptoms of DM. Considering that DM is usually associated with the existence of a tumor, cases of DM require a thorough diagnostic investigation in order to exclude an underlying malignancy.

Abstract
Paraneoplastic syndromes are signs or symptoms that occur as a result of organ or tissue damage at locations remote from the site of the primary tumor or metastases. Paraneoplastic syndromes associated with lung cancer can impair various organ functions and include neurologic, endocrine, dermatologic, rheumatologic, hematologic, and ophthalmological syndromes, as well as glomerulopathy and coagulopathy (Trousseau’s syndrome). The histological type of lung cancer is generally dependent on the associated syndrome, the two most common of which are humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy in squamous cell carcinoma and the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion in small cell lung cancer. The symptoms often precede the diagnosis of the associated lung cancer, especially when the symptoms are neurologic or dermatologic. The proposed mechanisms of paraneoplastic processes include the aberrant release of humoral mediators, such as hormones and hormone-like peptides, cytokines, and antibodies. Treating the underlying cancer is generally the most effective therapy for paraneoplastic syndromes, and treatment soon after symptom onset appears to offer the best potential for symptom improvement. In this article, we review the diagnosis, potential mechanisms, and treatments of a wide variety of paraneoplastic syndromes associated with lung cancer.

Abstract
Dermatomyositis (DM) is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. Misdiagnosed the squamous carcinoma of lung with DM is illustrated by the case who was a 73-year-old male and underwent successful surgical lobectomy presented here. The lack of examination of chest computed tomography (CT) is also emphasized. DM in an adult is a rare clinical entity. To facilitate the preoperative diagnosis and avoid the misdiagnosis of this disease, more etiological factors need to be considered.

Abstract
Inflammatory myopathies including polymyositis and dermatomyositis are autoimmune disorders presenting with characteristic muscle weakness. These diseases, especially dermatomyositis, have a well-known association with a wide variety of neoplasms including lung, breast, ovary and colon cancers. Here we report the case of a 58-year-old man who presented with a 3-week history of myositis and was simultaneously diagnosed with gastric cancer.
