Safety of Fenbendazole in Chinese Ring-Necked Pheasants (Phasianus colchicus)

Risk Assessment of Human Consumption of Meat From Fenbendazole-Treated Pheasants

Fenbendazole is a benzimidazole-class anthelmintic that is used for the control of immature and adult stages of internal parasites, such as nematodes and trematodes, in domestic food-animal species. It is not approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for treating pheasants despite Syngamus trachea being one of the most prevalent nematodes that parasitize pheasants. Because it is a highly effective treatment, e.g., 90% effectiveness against S. trachea, and there are very few alternative therapeutic options, this anthelminthic is used in an extra-label manner in the pheasant industry, but few studies have been conducted assessing risks to humans. Therefore, we conducted a risk assessment to evaluate the potential repeat-dose and reproductive, teratogenic, and carcinogenic human risks that may be associated with the consumption of tissues from pheasants that were previously treated with fenbendazole. We conducted a quantitative risk assessment applying both deterministic and stochastic approaches using different fenbendazole sulfone residue limits (tolerance, maximum residue limits, and analytical limit of detection) established in different poultry species by the Food and Drug Administration, the European Medicines Agency, and other regulatory agencies in Japan, Turkey, and New Zealand. Our results show that fenbendazole poses minimal risk to humans when administered to pheasants in an extra-label manner, and a comparison of different fenbendazole sulfone residue limits can help assess how conservative the withdrawal interval should be after extra-label drug use.

Syngamus asphyxiation in a captive ring-necked pheasant

A deceased ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) presented for necropsy following a history of chronic wasting. Necropsy revealed nematodes consistent with the genus Syngamus partially obstructing the trachea. Phylogentic analysis failed to reveal conclusive results regarding the species. Syngamus spp. can cause obstruction of the trachea in several different hosts. Additional genetic data from this taxon would aid in the more precise identification of diagnostic specimens.

Hematology and Serum Biochemistry Reference Intervals for Six-Week-Old, Farm-Reared Chinese Ring-Necked Pheasants ( Phasianus colchicus ) from Minnesota

Chinese ring-necked pheasants ( Phasianus colchicus ) are commonly farmed in intensive operations for purposes such as meat production, hunting preserves, or research. Under these conditions, pheasants frequently suffer medical ailments such as bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections or nutritional or metabolic disorders. Relatively little scientific information exists regarding clinical pathology reference intervals (RIs) for farm-reared pheasants. The objective of this study was to determine RIs for hematologic and serum biochemical variables for Chinese ring-necked pheasants from Minnesota at 6 wk of age. Blood samples from 119 clinically healthy Chinese ring-necked pheasants were analyzed using standard techniques. Reference intervals were generated in Microsoft® Excel® 2013 (Microsoft, Redmond, WA) using Reference Value Advisor freeware version 2.1 (Microsoft). Ninety-five percent RIs were determined using nonparametric methods that followed Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. These RIs will be useful for the monitoring of health and diagnosis of disease in confined Chinese ring-necked pheasant populations that are approximately 6 wk old.
