Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the association between three previously identified and validated dietary patterns (Western, Prudent and Mediterranean) and breast cancer risk by tumour subtype and menopausal status. METHODS Data from the Spanish cohort of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study provided epidemiological information (including diet and cancer incidence) from 24,892 women (639 breast cancer cases) recruited between 1992 and 1996. The associations between adherence to the three dietary patterns and breast cancer risk (overall and by tumour subtype) were explored by fitting multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models stratified by region, among other variables. A possible interaction with menopausal status (changing over time) was explored. RESULTS No clear association of the Prudent and Mediterranean dietary patterns with breast cancer risk was found. When compared with women with a level of adherence to the Western diet in the first quartile, women with a level of adherence in the third (hazard ratio (95 % confidence interval) (HR(95%CI)):1.37 (1.07;1.77)) and fourth quartiles (1.37 (1.03;1.83)); p for curvature of splines = 0.016) showed a non-linear increased risk, especially postmenopausal women (HR (95 % CI) 1.30 (0.98;1.72) in the third and 1.42 (1.04;1.94) in the fourth quartiles; p for curvature of splines = 0.081) and for estrogen or progesterone receptor positive with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative tumours (HR (95 % CI) 1.62 (1.10;2.38) and 1.71 (1.11;2.63) for the third and fourth quartiles respectively; p for curvature of splines = 0.013). CONCLUSIONS Intake of foods such as high-fat dairy products, red and processed meats, refined grains, sweets, caloric drinks, convenience food and sauces might be associated with a higher risk of breast cancer.

Abstract
Cancer is a major disease with a high mortality rate worldwide. In many countries, cancer is considered to be the second most common cause of death after cardiovascular disease. The clinical management of cancer continues to be a challenge as conventional treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, have limitations due to their toxicity profiles. Unhealthy lifestyle and poor dietary habits are the key risk factors for cancer; having a healthy diet and lifestyle may minimize the risk. Epidemiological studies have shown that a high fruit and vegetable intake in our regular diet can effectively reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancers due to the high contents of antioxidants and phytochemicals. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that phytochemicals exert significant anticancer effects due to their free radical scavenging capacity potential. There has been extensive research on the protective effects of phytochemicals in different types of cancers. This review attempts to give an overview of the etiology of different types of cancers and assesses the role of phytonutrients in the prevention of cancers, which makes the present review distinct from the others available.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify Brazilian dietary patterns and their associations with health, lifestyle and sociodemographic characteristics. Data from the Brazilian National Health Survey conducted in 2013 were used. A questionnaire was applied containing 22 items related to dietary consumption. Dietary patterns were determined through factor analysis (FA). Poisson regression models, with robust variance, were used to identify associations between dietary patterns and independents variables. Statistical significance was defined as p-value<0.05. Data were analysed for 60,202 adults (estimated population size: 146,308,458). FA identified three dietary patterns: healthy, protein, and western. The younger age group (18-24 years) had a lower adherence to the healthy pattern (PR:0.53; 95%CI:0.49-0.58) and greater adherence to the protein (PR:1.52; 95%CI:1.42-1.62) and western (PR:1.80; 95%CI:1.68-1.93) patterns compared to the elderly (≥60 years). Women had a greater association with the healthy pattern (PR:1.32; 95%CI:1.28-1.38) and lower association with the protein pattern (PR:0.80; 95%CI:0.77-0.82) compared to men. Illiterate participants showed lower adherence to the healthy (PR:0.58; 95%CI:0.53-0.63) and western (PR:0.54; 95%CI:0.48-0.62) patterns compared to those with higher educational levels. Smokers had lower adherence to the healthy (PR:0.76; 95%CI:0.71-0.81) and higher adherence to the protein (PR:1.14; 95%CI:1.11-1.19) patterns compared to non-smokers. Participants with poor/very poor self-rated health status had a lower adherence to the healthy (PR:0.79; 95%CI:0.73-0.86) and western (PR:0.81; 95%CI:0.73-0.89) patterns compared to those in a very good/good self-rated health status. Multimorbidity was positively associated with the healthy pattern (PR:1.18; 95%CI:1.11-1.26) and inversely associated with the protein pattern (PR:0.88; 95%CI:0.80-0.96) compared to participants without comorbidities. We suggest that strategies to promote healthy eating should consider health, lifestyle and sociodemographic characteristics in the Brazilian population.

Abstract
Background: The role of vitamin D in the development, progression, and prognosis of breast cancer, though widely studied worldwide, has been inconclusive. This study intended to assess the role of some factors (including serum vitamin D level, sun-exposed area, dietary factors, and physical activity) as predictors of the development of invasive breast cancer (IBC) among Sudanese women. Methods: A case–control study was conducted on 200 Sudanese women (100 with newly diagnosed IBC and 100 matched healthy females). Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D was measured through a competitive electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. Matching analysis was adopted by R version 3.4.1 making use of the “MatchIt” package for calculating propensity scores to build a confounder-adjusted, multiple generalized, linear logistic regression model. Results: Participants’ age ranged from 28 to 85 years with a mean [±standard deviation (SD)] of 48.10 (±12.11) years. The mean (±SD) serum vitamin D level was 12.97 (±8.60) and 13.79 (±6.79) ng/mL in breast cancer and noncancer Sudanese women, respectively [P = 0.013; odds ratio (OR) 0.862; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.766–0.969; β = 0.149)]. Sun-exposed area (P = 0.038; OR 0.013; 95% CI 0.000–0.782; β = 4.339) is significantly and negatively associated with breast cancer development. While moderate physical activity (P = 0.0008; OR 2625.430; 95% CI 26.647–258673.001; β = 7.873) is significantly and positively associated with IBC risk. Occasional consumption of milk, dairy products, eggs, and fish reduces the risk of developing IBC by 78.1%, 75.0%, 78.4%, and 76.4%, respectively. Conclusion: The higher the plasma vitamin D level by one unit, the lower the risk of breast cancer by 13.84%. Sedentary lifestyle, reduced sun-exposed skin area, and low serum vitamin D levels can be considered as predictors of IBC. Encouraging moderate physical activity and consumption of certain foods may, in part, decrease the precipitating risks of breast cancer. More studies and research are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Epidemiologic studies have contributed importantly to current knowledge of environmental and genetic risk factors for breast cancer. Worldwide, breast cancer is an important cause of human suffering and premature mortality among women. In the United States, breast cancer accounts for more cancer deaths in women than any site other than lung cancer. A variety of risk factors for breast cancer have been well-established by epidemiologic studies including race, ethnicity, family history of cancer, and genetic traits, as well as modifiable exposures such as increased alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, exogenous hormones, and certain female reproductive factors. Younger age at menarche, parity, and older age at first full-term pregnancy may influence breast cancer risk through long-term effects on sex hormone levels or by other biological mechanisms. Recent studies have suggested that triple negative breast cancers may have a distinct etiology. Genetic variants and mutations in genes that code for proteins having a role in DNA repair pathways and the homologous recombination of DNA double stranded breaks (APEX1, BRCA1, BRCA2, XRCC2, XRCC3, ATM, CHEK2, PALB2, RAD51, XPD), have been implicated in some cases of breast cancer.
