Mechanisms and modeling of electrohydrodynamic phenomena

Free-Boundary Microfluidic Platform for Advanced Materials Manufacturing and Applications

Microfluidics, with its remarkable capacity to manipulate fluids and droplets at the microscale, has emerged as a powerful platform in numerous fields. In contrast to conventional closed microchannel microfluidic systems, free-boundary microfluidic manufacturing (FBMM) processes continuous precursor fluids into jets or droplets in a relatively spacious environment. FBMM is highly regarded for its superior flexibility, stability, economy, usability, and versatility in the manufacturing of advanced materials and architectures. In this review, a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in FBMM is provided, encompassing technical principles, advanced material manufacturing, and their applications. FBMM is categorized based on the foundational mechanisms, primarily comprising hydrodynamics, interface effects, acoustics, and electrohydrodynamic. The processes and mechanisms of fluid manipulation are thoroughly discussed. Additionally, the manufacturing of advanced materials in various dimensions ranging from zero-dimensional to three-dimensional, as well as their diverse applications in material science, biomedical engineering, and engineering are presented. Finally, current progress is summarized and future challenges are prospected. Overall, this review highlights the significant potential of FBMM as a powerful tool for advanced materials manufacturing and its wide-ranging applications.

How can Electrospinning Further Service Well for Pharmaceutical Researches?

The past two decades have witnessed the enormous success and progress of electrospinning, as well as its broad and useful applications in pharmaceutics as a laboratory pharmaceutical nanotechnology. Everything in the past is a preface, in which the large screen opens for electrospinning and electrospun nanofibers (particularly those multiple-fluid electrospinning processes and the related multiple-chamber nanostructures) to stride into a new stage and the real commercial applications. In this commentary, four hot regions are identified for the further progress of the applications of electrospinning in pharmaceutics, in which electrospinning and its products can provide more and better services to the development of pharmaceutics.

Molecular Engineering of Printed Semiconducting Blends to Develop Organic Integrated Circuits: Crystallization, Charge Transport, and Device Application Analyses

Solution-based printing has contributed to the facile deposition of various types of materials, including the building blocks of printed electronics. In particular, solution-processable organic semiconductors (OSCs) are regarded as one of the most fascinating candidates for the fabrication of printed electronics. Herein, we report electrohydrodynamic (EHD) jet-printed p- and n-type OSCs, namely 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-PEN) and 6,13-bis((triisopropylsilyl)ethynyl)-5,7,12,14-tetraazapentacene (TIPS-TAP), and their use as single-OSC layers and as OSC mixed p-n layers to fabricate solution-processed p-, n-, and ambipolar-type organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). Use of the dragging mode of EHD jet printing, a process driven under a low electrostatic field with a short nozzle-to-substrate distance, was found to provide favorable conditions for growth of TIPS-PEN and TIPS-TAP crystals. In this way, the similar molecular structures of TIPS-PEN and TIPS-TAP yielded a homogeneous solid solution and showed ambipolar transport properties in OFETs. Therefore, the combination of single- and mixed-OSC layers enabled the preparation of various charge-transported devices from unit to integrated devices (NOT, NAND, NOR, and multivalued logic). Therefore, this fabrication technology can be useful for assisting in the production of OSC layers for practical applications in the near future.

Noninvasive In Vivo Imaging and Monitoring of 3D-Printed Polycaprolactone Scaffolds Labeled with an NIR Region II Fluorescent Dye

Significant progress has been made in fabricating porous scaffolds with ultrafine fibers for tissue regeneration. However, the lack of noninvasive tracking methods in vivo makes it impossible to track the fate of such scaffolds in situ. The development of near-infrared region II (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) dyes provides the possibility of performing noninvasive visualization with deep-tissue penetration and high spatial resolution in vivo. Herein, we developed a polycaprolactone (PCL) ink containing the small organic NIR-II dye SY-1030 and the fluorescently labeled macromolecular dye SY-COO-PCL and fabricated high-resolution NIR-II active scaffolds via electrohydrodynamic jet (EHDJ) printing. All printed scaffolds subcutaneously implanted in mice were clearly imaged one week after the operation. Compared with scaffolds containing SY-1030, the fluorescence intensity emitted from scaffolds containing SY-COO-PCL can be tracked for up to three weeks. Moreover, the image quality can be optimized by adjusting the dye concentration, laser power, and exposure time. The advantage of such NIR-II active scaffolds is evidenced by the lower dye concentration, longer tracking period, and better in vivo stability. We also demonstrated the biocompatibility and biodegradability of the scaffolds containing SY-COO-PCL over a 3-month period. The developed NIR-II active scaffolds have potential applications in biopolymer implant tracking, tissue reconstruction monitoring, and target-position-based drug delivery.

Single-bubble EHD behavior into water two-phase flow under electric-field stress and gravitational acceleration using PFM

In this study, single-bubble electro-hydrodynamic effects on the two-phase laminar flow of water under electric field stress are investigated using numerical modeling. A 2D axisymmetric model is also developed to study the growth and departure of a single bubble. The phase-field method is applied to track the interphase between liquid and gas. The growth of the attached vapor bubble nucleus to a superheat at 7.0 °C and 8.5 °C are evaluated with 50° and 90° contact angles. The results show that the enhancement of the contact angle changes the velocity and temperature fields around the bubble. It is observed that the growing size and base of the bubble is increased with increasing the wall superheat, but the bubble departure diameter and time are decreased. The electric field results in raising the number of detached bubbles from the superheat at a certain time interval but decreasing the bubbles departure size. Additionally, the formation of stretched bubbles enhances the rate of heat flux and there is a non-linear relationship between the applied voltage and heat flux.

Engineered Nanotopography on the Microfibers of 3D-Printed PCL Scaffolds to Modulate Cellular Responses and Establish an In Vitro Tumor Model

Scaffold-based three-dimensional (3D) cell culture systems have gained increased interest in cell biology, tissue engineering, and drug screening fields as a replacement of two-dimensional (2D) monolayer cell culture and as a way to provide biomimetic extracellular matrix environments. In this study, microscale fibrous scaffolds were fabricated via electrohydrodynamic printing, and nanoscale features were created on the fiber surface by simply leaching gliadin of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/gliadin composites in ethanol solution. The microstructure of the printed scaffolds could be precisely controlled by printing parameters, and the surface nanotopography of the printed fiber could be tuned by varying the PCL/gliadin ratios. By seeding mouse embryonic fibroblast (NIH/3T3) cells and human nonsmall cell lung cancer (A549) cells on the printed scaffolds, the cellular responses showed that the fiber nanotopography on printed scaffolds efficiently favored cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, and tissue formation. Quantitative analysis of the transcript expression levels of A549 cells seeded on nanoporous scaffolds further revealed the upregulation of integrin-β1, focal adhesion kinase, Ki-67, E-cadherin, and epithelial growth factor receptors over what was observed in the cells grown on the pure PCL scaffold. Furthermore, a significant difference was found in the relevant biomarker expression on the developed scaffolds compared with that in the monolayer culture, demonstrating the potential of cancer cell-seeded scaffolds as 3D in vitro tumor models for cancer research and drug screening.

Structured micro/nano materials synthesized via electrospray: a review

The development of synthetic methods for micro/nano materials with precisely controlled structures, morphologies, and local compositions is of great importance for the advancement of modern nanotechnology. The electrospray method is a "platform" approach for the preparation of a broad range of micro-/nanostructures; electrospray is simple and scalable. This review summarizes recent research on the micro-/nanostructures prepared via the electrospray route. These include spherical structures (e.g. simple, porous, Janus, and core-shell particles), non-spherical structures (e.g. red blood cell-like and spindle-like particles, multi-compartment microrods, 2D holey nanosheets, and nanopyramids), and assembled structures. The experimental details, underlying physical/chemical principles, and key benefits of these structures are comprehensively discussed. The effects and importance of nozzle design, properties of feeding solutions (e.g. concentration of solute, polymer additives, solvent/nonsolvent combinations), working environment (e.g. temperature and humidity), and types of collection media are highlighted.
