Abstract
Allergic rhinitis is a prevalent allergic diseases and has a profound impact on physical well-being. In recent years, more and more people have changed to allergic diseases, such as allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, allergic dermatitis and so on. In the incidence of allergic rhinitis, covering all ages. The common clinical treatment of allergic rhinitis are drugs and immunotherapy, but these therapies have certain limitations. Therefore, an effective and economical treatment for AR is urgently needed. Acupuncture are widely used in the clinical treatment of various diseases, but the effect of acupuncture in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) is significant, and the mechanism of acupuncture in the treatment of AR is also a hot spot. Acupuncture is one of the traditional treatment methods of traditional Chinese medicine, which achieves therapeutic effect by pressing a needle or other means at a specific location on the skin to produce a special sensation. Among them, acupuncture, as a popular treatment method, has attracted more and more attention. In this review, we provide an overview of the current understanding of acupuncture and AR, as well as current studies investigating the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for AR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recombinant human Interleukin receptor antagonist (rhIL-Ra) can bind to the IL-1 receptor on the cell membrane and reversibly blocks the proinflammatory signaling pathway. However, its effect on allergic rhinitis (AR) and the underlying mechanism remains unknown. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of recombinant human interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (rhIL-1Ra) on AR guinea pigs. METHODS Guinea pigs were systemically sensitized by intraperitoneal injection and topical intranasal instillation with ovalbumin within 21 days. Animals administrated with saline served as the normal control. The AR animals were randomly divided into the model group and distinct concentrations of rhIL-1Ra and budesonide treatment groups. IL-1β and ovalbumin specific IgE levels were detected by ELISA kits. Nasal mucosa tissues were stained with hematoxylin & eosin (HE) for histological examination. RESULTS It was found that the numbers of sneezing and nose rubbing were remarkably reduced in rhIL-1Ra and budesonide-treated guinea pigs. Besides, rhIL-1Ra distinctly alleviated IgE levels in serum and IL-1β levels in nasal mucus, together with decreased exfoliation of epithelial cells, eosinophilic infiltration, tissue edema and vascular dilatation. CONCLUSIONS rhIL-1Ra is effective in AR guinea pigs and may provide a novel potential choice for AR treatments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a worldwide problem that affects people of all ages, impairing patients' physical and mental health and causing great social expenditure. Animal studies have suggested the potential efficacy of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy in treating AR. Our meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of MSC therapy in animal models of AR by pooling animal studies. METHODS The search was executed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, OVID, and the Cochrane Library for relevant studies up to February 2023. The applicable data were extracted from the eligible studies, and the risk of bias was assessed for each study. The meta-analysis was conducted using Review Manager (version 5.4.1) and Stata (version 15.1). RESULTS A total of 12 studies were included in the final analysis. Compared to the model control group, the MSC therapy group presented lower frequency of sneezing [(Standardized mean difference (SMD) -1.87, 95% CI -2.30 to -1.43)], nasal scratching (SMD -1.41, 95% CI -1.83 to -0.99), and overall nasal symptoms (SMD -1.88, 95% CI -3.22 to -0.54). There were also remarkable reductions after transplantation with MSCs in the levels of total immunoglobulin E (IgE) (SMD -1.25, 95% CI -1.72 to -0.79), allergen-specific IgE (SMD -1.79, 95% CI -2.25 to -1.32), and allergen-specific immunoglobulin G1 (SMD -1.29, 95% CI -2.03) in serum, as well as the count of eosinophils (EOS) in nasal mucosa (SMD -3.48, 95% CI -4.48 to -2.49). In terms of cytokines, MSC therapy significantly decreased both protein and mRNA levels of T helper cell 2 (Th2)-related cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, IL-10, and IL-13. CONCLUSION MSC therapy has the potential to be an effective clinical treatment for AR patients by attenuating Th2 immune responses, reducing secretion of IgE and nasal infiltration of EOS, and consequently alleviating nasal symptoms.

Abstract
Background The decoction form of herbal medicine (D-HM) is mainly prescribed to patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) in Korean Medicine (KM) clinics in the Republic of Korea; however, it is difficult to conduct clinical trials of D-HM due to regulatory issues. This study investigated the clinical safety and effectiveness of D-HM combination therapy for the treatment of AR by analyzing the AR outpatient data from 17 KM clinics. Methods This retrospective cohort study included patients who visited KM clinics for AR treatment from January 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022. Cases were collated using structured case report forms and divided into the D-HM with KM usual care group (D-HM group) and the KM usual care group (UC group). Since D-HM therapy could not be randomly assigned to the study population, we used optimal propensity score (PS) matching to investigate the effectiveness and safety of D-HM combination therapy in the treatment of AR. Results Data from 228 patients were collected. After PS matching, 144 patients were finally analyzed. The total nasal symptom score (TNSS) and mini-rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (mini-RQLQ) were significantly improved in the D-HM group compared with those in the UC group (TNSS: p=0.02; mini-RQLQ: p=0.04). Four patients in the D-HM group experienced minor adverse events that were mild and resolved within 15 days. Conclusions D-HM combination therapy may be beneficial in the management of symptoms and rhinitis-associated quality of life and potentially useful in clinical practice. However, randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials are required to confirm their effectiveness. Abstract
The immunogenicity and toxicity of N-2-Hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan/N, O-carboxymethyl chitosan nanoparticles (N-2-HACC/CMCS NPs) as a universal vaccine adjuvant/delivery system remains unclear. The present study indicated that the positively charged N-2-HACC/CMCS NPs showed a regular spherical morphology, with a particle size of 219 ± 13.72 nm, zeta potential of 37.28 ± 4.58 mV, had hemocompatibility and biodegradation. Acute toxicity, repeated dose toxicity, abnormal toxicity, muscle stimulation, whole body allergic reaction evaluation in vitro, and cytotoxicity in vivo confirmed N-2-HACC/CMCS NPs is safe and non-toxic. N-2-HACC/OVA/CMCS NPs were prepared to evaluate the immunogenicity, which showed a particle size of 248.1 ± 15.53 nm, zeta potential of 17.24 ± 1.28 mV, encapsulation efficiency of 92.43 ± 0.96 %, and loading capacity of 42.97 ± 0.07 %. Oral or intramuscular route with the N-2-HACC/OVA/CMCS NPs in mice not only induced higher IgG, IgG1, IgG2a, and sIgA antibody titers, but also significantly produced higher levels of IL-6, IL-4, IFN-γ, and TNF-α, demonstrating that the N-2-HACC/OVA/CMCS NPs enhance humoral, cellular, and mucosal immune responses. Our results not only support the N-2-HACC/CMCS NPs to be a safe and potential universal nano adjuvant/delivery system in vaccine development, especially mucosal vaccines, but also rich the database knowledge of adjuvant/delivery systems, and provide new direction to introduce more licensed adjuvants.

Abstract
Objective: Due to the shared pathogenesis of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), patients with asthma were found to have a higher risk of RA. While the benefits and safety of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) for asthma have been reported, the scientific evidence regarding its effect on RA is limited. This longitudinal cohort study aimed to determine the relation between CHM use and RA risk in patients with asthma.Methods: Using the nationwide claims data, we enrolled 33,963 patients 20–80 years of age who were newly diagnosed with asthma and simultaneously free of RA between 2000 and 2007. From this sample, we utilized propensity score matching to create sets of participants as treatment and control groups, which comprised 13,440 CHM users and 13,440 non-CHM users. The incidence rate and hazard ratio (HR) for RA between the two groups were estimated at the end of 2013. A Cox proportional hazards model was constructed to examine the impact of the CHM use on the risk of RA.Results: The cumulative incidence of RA was substantially lower in the CHM user group. In the follow-up period, 214 patients in the CHM user group (1.92 per 1,000 person-years) and 359 patients in the non-CHM user group (2.92 per 1,000 person-years) developed RA (adjusted HR = 0.63, 95% confidence interval: 0.54–0.75). Of the commonly-prescribed formulae, nine CHM products were associated with a lower RA risk: Xiao-Qing-Long-Tang, Ma-Xing-Gan-Shi-Tang, Ding-Chuan-Tang, Xin-Yi-Qing-Fei-Tang, Bei Mu, Jie Geng, Xing Ren, Da Huang, and San Chi.Conclusion: This study found that patients with asthma who received CHM treatment, in addition to the conventional therapy, had a lower risk of RA. Use of CHM treatment may be integrated into conventional therapy to reduce subsequent RA risk among asthma patients.

Abstract
YU-Pingfeng San (YPFS) can regulate inflammatory response to alleviate the symptoms of nasal congestion and runny rose in allergic rhinitis (AR). However, the mechanism of action remains unclear. In this study, 30 active ingredients of three effective herbs included in YPFS and 140 AR/YPFS-related genes were identified by database analysis. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis showed that the targets were mainly enriched in immune inflammatory-related biological processes and pathways. Finally, three hub gene targeting epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 (MAPK1), and protein kinase B1 (AKT1) related to YPFS and AR were identified by network pharmacology analysis. YPFS treatment decreased the expression of EGFR, MAPK1, and AKT1 in ovalbumin (OVA)-induced AR mice and impaired the production of inflammatory factors interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, and IL-13, thus alleviating immunoglobulin E (IgE) production and the symptoms of scratching nose in AR. Through molecular docking analysis, we found that the active ingredients decursin, anomalin, and wogonin of YPFS could bind to EGFR, MAPK1, and AKT1 proteins. Moreover, decursin treatment impaired the expression of IL-4 and IL-5 in human PBMCs. These results suggested that YPFS could alleviate the AR inflammatory responses by targeting EGFR, MAPK1, and AKT1, showing the mechanism of action of YPFS in AR treatment.

Abstract
Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a highly prevalent allergic disease induced by immunoglobulin (Ig) E-mediated hypersensitivity reaction at the nasal epithelium against inhaled allergens. Previous studies have demonstrated that Pentaherbs formula (PHF), a modified herbal formula comprising five herbal medicines (Flos Lonicerae, Herba Menthae, Cortex Phellodendri, Cortex Moutan and Rhizoma Atractylodis), could suppress various immune effector cells to exert anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects in allergic asthma and atopic dermatitis. The present study aimed to further determine the anti-inflammatory activities of PHF in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced AR BALB/c mouse model. Nasal symptoms such as sneezing and nose rubbing were recorded and the serum total IgE and OVA-specific IgG1, as well as interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, IL-10, IL-13, chemokines CXCL9 CXCL10, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α concentrations in nasal lavage fluid (NALF) were measured during different treatments. Effects of PHF on the expression of inflammatory mediators in the sinonasal mucosa were quantified using real-time QPCR. PHF was found to suppress allergic symptoms, infiltration of inflammatory cells, and hyperplasia of goblet cells in the nasal epithelium of the OVA-induced AR mice. PHF could reduce OVA-specific IgG1 level in serum, and TNF-α and IL-10 in nasal lavage fluid (NALF), significantly up-regulate the splenic regulatory T (Treg) cell level, increase the Type 1 helper T cell (Th1)/Type 2 helper T cell (Th2) ratio, and reduce the Th17 cells (all p < 0.05). PHF could also alleviate in situ inflammation in sinonasal mucosa of OVA-induced AR mice. In conclusion, oral treatment of PHF showed immuno-modulatory activities in the OVA-induced AR mice by regulating the splenic T cell population to suppress the nasal allergy symptoms and modulating inflammatory mediators, implicating that PHF could be a therapeutic strategy for allergic rhinitis.
