Psychometric Evaluation of the Caring Behaviors Inventory in Turkish Nurses and Patients

The effect of practice environments and psychological empowerment perceptions of nurses on their care behaviours: A cross-sectional study

AIM

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of professional and individual characteristics, practice environments and psychological empowerment perceptions of nurses on their care behaviours.

DESIGN

The study used a cross-sectional research design following the STROBE guidelines.

METHODS

The sample of this descriptive and correlational study consisted of 584 nurses working in a university hospital in Turkey. The data were collected between January and June 2023 using the Nursing Information Form, the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI), the Psychological Empowerment Scale (PES), and the Caring Behaviours Scale-30, and analysed using descriptive statistics, Spearman's correlation and multiple linear regression.

RESULTS

It was determined that PES-NWI, PES and Caring Behaviours Scale (CBI-30) scores of nurses were higher than the average. The study revealed that certain professional and individual characteristics of nurses, practice environments and psychological empowerment perceptions had an effect on their care behaviours.

CONCLUSION

The results of the study showed that nurses' PES-NWI, PES and CBI-30 scores were higher than the average, and that certain professional and individual characteristics of nurses, practice environments and psychological empowerment perceptions had an effect on care behaviours. Nursing service managers, in particular, are required to understand the importance of this relationship and create appropriate working conditions which are integrated with psychological empowerment to improve caring behaviours of nurses.

The effect of conscience perception on job satisfaction and care behaviours in nurses

Conscience is a force capable of making judgments about one's own moral values during individual behaviour. Conscience in nursing is a concept that is perceived as authority and an inner voice, and it positively affects nursing care. Today, according to many research results, conscience is an indicator of professionalism that affects our personal and professional lives. This research was carried out to determine the effect of nurses' perceptions of conscience on job satisfaction and care behaviours. A cross-sectional study was performed in a training and research hospital. The sample size of 338 nurses was determined by power analysis, and the participants were selected using a simple random sampling method. The data were collected between June and November 2020. A "Personal Information Form", the "Conscience Perception Scale (CPS)", the "Nurse Job Satisfaction Scale (NJSS)" and the "Caring Behaviours Scale-30 (CBS-30)" were used to collect the data. The nurses obtained a score of 63.36 ± 12.13 on the CPS, indicating a high level of conscience perception; a total of 3.41 ± 0.69 points on the NJSS, revealing a high level of job satisfaction; and a total of 150.42 ± 21.22 points on the CBS-30, implying that care perceptions were found to be high. It was determined that the nurses' perceptions of conscience had an effect on their job satisfaction and care behaviours (R = 0.398, Adjusted R2 = 0.158, p = 0.000). The nurses who participated in the study had a high perception of conscience, which positively affected their job satisfaction and care behaviours.

Caring Behaviors Inventory-24: translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and psychometric testing for using in nurses and patients

BACKGROUND

To measure caring behaviors, it is necessary to have an instrument adapted based on the contextual culture. This study aimed to translate Caring Behaviors Inventory-24 (CBI-24) into Persian and determine its psychometric properties.

METHODS

This is a methodological study conducted to translate and then psychometrically test The CBI-24. The forward-backward translation was conducted using the World Health Organization (WHO) model and Wild et al. (2005) approach. The face, content, and construct validity of the inventory were assessed using cognitive interviews (10 nurses and 10 patients), expert panel deliberations (10 experts), and the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (300 nurses and 300 patients), respectively. The reliability was determined using the internal consistency (300 nurses and 300 patients) and test-retest method (30 nurses and 30 patients).

RESULTS

After translating the CBI-24 and combining its items, the forward translation was initially conducted and the final backward translation was then sent to the developer for confirmation. The final version of the inventory was prepared after the completion of cognitive interviews. The content validity index of all items was reported to be more than 0.8 and good. The Cohen's kappa coefficient of all items was also shown to be higher than 0.74 and excellent. The factor loading of all items except item 19 was above 0.3. Item 19 was removed since it caused the alpha value of the respectfulness dimension to be 0.32. The Cronbach's alpha and the correlation coefficient of the whole inventory were calculated to be 0.95 and 0.88, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The Persian version of CBI-24 can be a suitable tool for measuring caring behaviors among patients and nurses.

Nurse and Patient Assessments of COVID-19 Care Quality in China: A Comparative Survey Study

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the quality of nursing care was a concern due to nurses' overwhelming workload. A cross-sectional design was conducted to compare perceptions between nurses and patients about the quality of nursing care for COVID-19 patients and to explore factors associated with these perceptions. Data were collected during the COVID-19 pandemic from 17 March to 13 April 2020 in five hospitals in Wuhan, China. Perceptions of care quality were assessed among nurses and patients using the Caring Behaviors Inventory. Nurses rated the quality of caring behaviors higher than patients. Both nurses and patients rated technical caring behaviors at high levels and rated the item related to "spending time with the patient" the lowest, while patients rated it much lower than nurses. Nurses' sex, participation in ethical training organized by the hospital, professional title, being invited to Wuhan, and length of working experience in years were significantly associated with nurses' self-evaluated caring behaviors. Moreover, inpatient setting and communication mode were significantly associated with patients' self-evaluated caring behaviors.

Translation, adaptation, and validation of the Filipino version of the Caring Behaviors Inventory

Background

The way patients perceive nurses' caring behaviors can potentially impact patient outcomes and satisfaction. Studies have revealed incongruence between nurses' and patients' perceptions with regard to which behaviors are considered caring.

Objective

This study aimed to conduct a cross-cultural validation and evaluation of the psychometric properties of the Caring Behaviors Inventory (CBI-16), a self-report questionnaire, from English to Filipino.

Methods

A descriptive cross-sectional design involving forward and back-translation with bilingual translators, expert validation, and a survey in a sample of patients and nurses was used. The psychometric evaluation used a sample of 142 staff nurses and 180 hospitalized patients. Exploratory factor analysis, internal consistency reliability, and inferential statistics were used for data analysis.

Results

The Filipino version of the CBI-16 (CBI-16-FIL) had excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha of 0.95) and a unidimensional factor structure (accounted for 85% of total variance). The CBI-16-FIL was found to be a valid, reliable, and unidimensional tool to measure the perceptions of nurse caring behaviors in the Philippines.

Conclusion

The CBI-16-FIL can be used to measure perceptions of nurse caring behaviors. There is a need for further studies involving other cultures, dyadic samples of nurses and patients, and larger sample sizes.

Translation and validation of caring behaviors inventory among nurses in Iran

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Nurses' caring behaviors, professional activities, and behaviors for the benefit of patients, influence patients' perception of care and satisfaction with the quality of care provided. Caring behaviors of nurses are contextual and various factors such as patients' social structure, lifestyle, culture, and interests, as well as their biographical, social, and physiological characteristics, can influence perceptions of caring behaviors of nurses, as caring behaviors are an interactive and mental process between patients and nurses. This study was conducted to provide a transcultural translation and psychometric analysis of Caring Behaviors Inventory (CBI) among nurses in Iran.

METHODOLOGY

Transcultural translation of the 16-item CBI was performed. Then, face validity (qualitative), content validity (quantitative and qualitative), and construct validity were examined in a cross-sectional study of 509 patients. A demographic questionnaire and the 16-item CBI were sent to enrolled patients via online questionnaires. The reliability of the instrument was assessed by internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha. Then, construct validity of the single factor CBI was assessed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Since one factor CBI was not confirmed, construct validity was examined using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). The final number of factors was confirmed using CFA.

RESULTS

The internal consistency of the instrument was good with Cronbach's alpha 0.89. Based on EFA, the CBI were loaded on two factors, eigenvalues >1, no item was removed. The emergent factors were named "Communicating respectfully" and "Professional knowledge and skill". These two factors explained 50.197% of the total variance. Then, CFA showed an acceptable fit for the two factors CBI.

CONCLUSION

The results showed that the Persian version of the 16-item CBI had adequate validity and reliability. Accordingly, this instrument can be used to study nurses' caring behaviors.
