Prevalence and Correlates of Poor Oral Hygiene among School-Going Students in Mongolia

Brushing at least twice a day is one of the most effective methods for the prevention of dental caries and oral diseases. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence and correlates of poor oral hygiene in Mongolian school-going students. A secondary analysis of nationally representative data from the 2013 Mongolian Global School-based Health Survey (GSHS) was performed. In the survey, a questionnaire was completed by 5393 students aged 12–16 years old. The prevalence of poor oral hygiene and its association with some independent variables were analyzed by frequency distribution, chi-squared test, and logistic regression. The overall prevalence of poor oral hygiene was 33%. In the multivariate analysis, male students, inadequate fruit and vegetable intake, parents’ smoking, being exposed to second-hand smoke, poor parental supervision and connectedness, physical inactivity, and sedentary behavior were significantly associated with poor oral hygiene. Meanwhile, students who ate fast food and drank carbonated soft drink were found to be less likely to be poor tooth-brushers in 2013. Various determinants were identified in connection with poor oral hygiene. Based on these findings, it is recommended that an oral health promotion program should be combined with general health promotion and lifestyle intervention programs for this target population.

Oral Health Behaviors among Schoolchildren in Western Iran: Determinants and Inequality

Introduction

Little information exists on the status of oral hygiene behavior (OHB) and socioeconomic inequalities in developing countries like Iran. The aim of this study was to assess OHB and its determinants and socioeconomic inequality among schoolchildren in western Iran during 2018.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 1,457 students aged 12–15 years living in Kermanshah city, western Iran. We used multistage sampling to select the samples. A self-administrated questionnaire was used to collect data on OHB, sociodemographic characteristics, and economic status of the households of students. Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the association between OHB and its determinants. We used the relative concentration index, normalized (RCIn) and a concentration curve (CC) to examine socioeconomic-related inequality in OHB.

Results

The study indicated that crude and age-adjusted prevalence of good OHB was 14.61% (95% CI 12.89%–16.53%) and 15.17% (95% CI 13.22%–17.35%), respectively. Logistic regression analysis showed that sex, mother’s education, socioeconomic status, and oral health literacy had a statistically significant positive impact on OHB. RCIn (0.2582, 95% CI0.1770–0.3395) values and the CC indicated that good OHB was more concentrated among the richer children.

Conclusion

This study provides evidence that good OHB was less prevalent, signifying that oral health remains a public-health concern in Iran. Effective polices aimed at improving the socioeconomic status of households and mother’s education can contribute positively and to the prevention of oral disorders among schoolchildren.

Dental health status and oral health behavior among university students from five ASEAN countries

The aim of this study was to investigate dental health status and oral health behavior and associated factors among university students in five ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam). Using anonymous questionnaires, data were collected from 3,344 undergraduate university students (mean age 20.5, SD=1.6; 58.3% female) from five ASEAN countries. Results indicate that 27.7% of students reported to have sometimes, most of the time or always having tooth ache in the past 12 months, 39.4% reported to have one or more cavities, 20.3% did not brush their teeth twice or more times a day, and 30.9% had never been to a dentist (or did not know it). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, older age, living in a lower middle income country, consumption of chocolate or candy, having made a dental care visit, and poor mental health was associated with tooth ache in the past 12 months. Being male, being 20 to 21 years old, coming from a wealthier family background, living in a lower middle income country, frequent consumption of soft drinks, not having consulted with a dentist in the past 12 months and weak beliefs in the benefits of tooth brushing were associated with inadequate tooth brushing frequency ( Collapse
