Disseminating packaged behavioral intervention programs appears to be an increasingly important objective in the field of applied behavior analysis. An exportable training package, designed to teach helping skills to community service workers, was evaluated with two social service agencies. The package was mailed to a community proctor who administered the materials without direct instructional contact with the experimenters. The results showed that the percentage of specified trainee target behaviors increased after the training package was introduced. Ratings of trainee performance by independent community service workers correlated with behavior observations of trainee performance. This study illustrates a method for assessing the effectiveness of behavioral interventions to be disseminated to potential consumers.

Training respite care providers for families with handicapped children: Experimental analysis and validation of an instructional package

We conducted four experiments to evaluate a respite care training package. In Experiment 1, we assessed the effectiveness of an instructional manual on the acquisition of respite care skills and compared the relative effects of three different manual on the acquisition of respite care skills and compared the relative effects of three different manual presentation formats. Results showed that performance during simulated (role-played) respite care situations improved substantially for all six trainees following presentation of the instructional manual (with no significant differences between presentation formats) although some remedial training was necessary to achieve mastery criterion. In Experiment 2, we evaluated the effects of the manual presented as a whole with a larger group of trainees and compared it to a workshop training approach. Results showed that both the instructional manual and workshop training approaches were effective, but that the former appeared to be more cost-effective. In both experiments, correct responding generalized to a respite care situation with a multiply handicapped child. In addition, several measures of social validity were obtained. In Experiment 3, we evaluated a simplified training and assessment package that could be conducted using the resources typically available to respite care agencies, and in Experiment 4, we demonstrated that respite care agency personnel could successfully implement this program.

Community applications of instructional technology: training low-income proctors

A community education system might be most effectively implemented in low-income communities if it were deliverable by neighborhood residents. A proctor training manual, designed to teach neighborhood residents how to administer standardized learning units to their peers, was analyzed in two experiments. The results of Experiment I showed that the percentage of occurrence of proctor behaviors increased after completion of the manual. Supplementary data suggest that specified proctor behaviors generalize to actual instructional situations. The results of Experiment II showed that the percentage of occurrence of trainee behaviors was higher when instructional packages were administered by trained proctors than when administered by untrained proctors. This study demonstrates an effective procedure for training low-income community residents to serve as proctors for a community education system.

Some promising dimensions for behavioral community technology

In recent years, the search for effective and replicable approaches to planned change in communities has escalated. Applied behavior analysts have participated in these efforts to remedy existing community problems and to increase the capacities of community residents to meet their goals. Examples of behavioral technologies for community settings are described and their advantages are noted. Criteria for more contextually appropriate community technologies are suggested and strategies for developing behavioral methods according to these criteria are described. This paper outlines some promising dimensions for behavioral community technology and discusses several possible limitations to a behavioral approach to addressing societal problems.

Training professionals to record proceedings of interdisciplinary team conferences

Two experiments were conducted to assess the effectiveness of an instructional program in preparing staff and trainees at a university affiliated facility (UAF) to record proceedings of interdisciplinary team conferences. Training consisted of a self-instructional manual supplemented by a narrated videotape of a typical interdisciplinary case conference. Data were collected on the extent to which trainees correctly completed individual educational plan work sheets based on conference proceedings as a function of training. Findings of both experiments showed that the training program resulted in rapid acquisition of skills required to record team proceedings.

Enhancing leadership skills for community self-help organizations through behavioral instruction

Group members with skills to lead effective meetings are valuable resources of any community organization. The effects of a behaviorally based textbook and training procedures designed to teach members of community self-help groups to chair effective meetings were analyzed. Measures were collected during regularly scheduled meetings on chairperson performance, member participation, and the closure of discussion topics. The results showed that the use of specified chairperson activities increased after training for each of two chairperson trainees. Further, outcome data suggest that more decisions were made. These findings suggest that the chairperson training procedures may enhance the leadership and decision-making resources of community self-help groups.

The evaluation of a community-based group program for low-income diabetics and hypertensives

Two studies compared the effectiveness of a community-based, behavioral group program versus an individual patient-education program with low-income diabetic and hypertensive patients, respectively. The dependent variables measured patients' knowledge, disease management skills, and clinical outcomes. Patients in the group programs demonstrated greater gains in knowledge and disease management skills than did the control patients. However, there was no clinically significant change in weight, blood pressure, or urinalysis results for any group of patients. The data suggest that group management is an effective mechanism for patient education but is not sufficiently reinforcing to induce change of habits, particularly when there are competing sources of reinforcement within the community.

Training counseling and problem-solving skills with university students

Often nonprofessionals lack specific instruction in relevant counseling and problem-solving skills. The effects of training procedures on counseling and problem-solving behaviors were examined experimentally with university students. The procedures involved the use of behavioral specifications, rationales, situational examples, study guides, and practice plus feedback on performance. Following training, the average percentage of occurrence of counseling and problem-solving behaviors increased to 89%. Generalization data in sessions with actual clients and expert ratings of the overall quality of counseling provided evidence of generalization to other settings and other evaluative dimensions of counseling and problem-solving performance.

Training counseling skills: an experimental analysis and social validation

A community development perspective suggests the value of using local resources to solve local problems. Two low-income staff of a community service center served as nonprofessional counselors after receiving a training program consisting of written instructions, practice, and performance feedback. The effects of the 40-hour training program were positive for both counseling and problem-solving skills. There was also evidence of generalization of counseling performance across clients, problems, and time. In addition, expert judges' ratings of performance were obtained as a measure of social validity. These findings suggest that the training procedures are effective in enhancing the counseling and problem-solving skills of low-income nonprofessionals.

Training teachers in generalized writing of behavior modification programs for multihandicapped deaf children

In contrast to previous studies where teachers were instructed how to implement behavior modification programs designed by an experimenter, teachers in the present experiment were taught how to write as well as implement behavior modification programs. The generalized effects of two training conditions on teacher and pupil behaviors were assessed by a multiple baseline design where, following baseline, two teachers of multi-handicapped deaf children were taught to set objectives and measure pupil performance (measurement training), Later, through a training manual, they learned a general problem-solving approach to writing behavior modification programs (programming training). After both training conditions, experimenter feedback was given for teachers' application of training to a target behavior for one pupil and generalization was measured across target behaviors for the same pupil and across pupils. It was found that measurement training had little general effect on either teacher behavior or pupil behavior. However, after programming training, teachers increased their program writing and correct use of behavior modification procedures and generalized this training across pupils and target behaviors. Along with these effects, there was improvement in pupil behaviors. Possible explanation for generalized effects of teacher training were considered.
