The Other Shoe: An Early Operant Conditioning Chamber for Pigeons

We describe an early operant conditioning chamber fabricated by Harvard University instrument maker Ralph Gerbrands and shipped to Japan in 1952 in response to a request of Professor B. F. Skinner by Japanese psychologists. It is a rare example, perhaps the earliest still physically existing, of such a chamber for use with pigeons. Although the overall structure and many of the components are similar to contemporary pigeon chambers, several differences are noted and contrasted to evolutionary changes in this most important laboratory tool in the experimental analysis of behavior. The chamber also is testimony to the early internationalization of behavior analysis.

"Replacing" problem behavior: an analysis of tactical alternatives

A number of textbooks and professional volumes in applied behavior analysis suggest that interventions designed primarily to decrease a problem behavior should routinely be accompanied by efforts to increase the frequency of at least one appropriate behavior. Some sources describe the objective of this tactic as "replacing" the problem behavior. This paper considers rationales that might underlie this advice, as well as reasons why a general rule to this effect is inappropriate. This review reveals that although there may well be good reasons for considering this tactic, their rationales are often not well articulated and may even be unsound. It is also the case that there are good reasons why this tactic may not always be necessary, thus conflicting with an argument for a general rule.

Operant conditioning of autogrooming in vervet monkeys: Cercopithecus aethiops

Vervet monkeys received food reinforcement contingent on autogrooming. Experiment 1 reinforced grooming on a schedule of increasing intermittency and grooming increased in frequency and duration; with only pauses reinforced, grooming decreased in frequency and duration. Experiment 2 demonstrated differentiation of operant autogrooming; in each session a different single form of grooming was reinforced (for example, grooming the tail only), and that form increased in frequency while other forms became less frequent. In Experiment 3 scratching was succesfully conditioned with a method that selectively reinforced variety in behavior; reinforcement was contingent on a shift in scratching form. In Experiment 4, with no contingencies on grooming, a prefood stimulus did not increase autogrooming whether or not grooming had previously resulted in contingent reinforcement. The form of conditioned autogrooming resembled the form of unconditioned autogrooming. The discussion suggests how reinforcement principles can account for changes in the topography of operant behavior.

Punishment of autoshaped key-peck responses of pigeons

The effects of different voltages of response-dependent and response-independent electric shock on the frequency of key-peck responses engendered by an autoshaping procedure were studied. In Experiments I and II, each response produced a brief electric shock, and response frequency generally decreased more with higher-voltage shock. Preshock frequencies of responding were generally recovered across successive sessions of relatively low-voltage shock delivery but not at higher shock voltages. The effects of response-dependent and response-independent shock were compared in Experiment III by using a yoked-control procedure in which each pigeon received each type of shock delivery at different times. Response-dependent shock generally produced greater decreases in response frequency. In the final experiment, one response-independent shock per autoshaping trial was scheduled. The number of autoshaped responses per trial was related to shock voltages. These results suggest that response-dependent and response-independent electric shock effectively decrease frequency of autoshaped responses.

Centrifugal selection of signal-directed pecking

Pigeons were exposed to a schedule of stimulus-correlated food presentations. When key pecks terminated trial signals and cancelled the delivery of food, pecking was either gradually or rapidly redirected away from the keys, depending on whether the food-omission contingency was introduced from the outset or after exposure to a response-independent baseline. In all cases, the food-omission contingency substantially reduced or eliminated pecking at the keys.

On the role of "memory" in the analysis of behavior

Shimp's (1976) recent paper on memory and the structure of behavior is discussed, as is the concept of memory itself. Radical behaviorism is distinguished from associationism, and behavioral accounts of experiments on short-term and long-term memory are provided. Unobservable theoretical quantities, such as rate of response, are distinguished from theoretical constructs such as memory. The logical inconsistency involved in the use of short-term memory as a "theoretical primitive" in the definition of units of behavior is explicated, and an alternative strategy for identifying units of behavior is presented. It is argued that the experimental analysis of behavior has ignored processes usually considered as memorial because many of the phenomena are irreversible. Methods for the study of transitions in single subjects should be developed more fully. Possible pitfalls associated with subscription to the term memory are listed, and it is concluded that the concept is neither required nor helpful in the analysis of behavior.

Measurement and control of pecking response location in the pigeon

Experimental arrangements for the detection and control of pecking response location in the pigeon are described. Two different, commercially available detection devices are compared, one utilizing an array of infrared light emitters and detectors (infrared device), the other requiring contact with sheets of conductive film (mylar device) but both specifying a location as a set of X-Y coordinates. The utility of these devices for monitoring peck location was assessed in experiments involving pecking responses emitted under continuous reinforcement, fixed ratio, and response differentiation schedules. Both devices allow measurement of responses over areas much greater than those of the standard pecking response key, provide information about the location of all responses, whether on or off a designated stimulus area, and permit the programming of reinforcement contingencies based upon peck location. While the two devices differ with respect to their sensitivity and their resolution, they yield similar distributions of peck locations for the same animal tested under similar reinforcement schedules. Both devices have some limitations related to their design as detectors of human touch, and suggestions for minimizing these limitations are presented.

Approach-withdrawal response competition (AW-RC), displacement, and behavior modification

This paper reviews displacement theory and animal research as derived from approach-withdrawal response competition (AW-RC), with a selected emphasis on clinical implications. AW-RC displacement is seen as part of the larger area of behavior modification while nevertheless distinguished from the larger area by a singular model and methodology. It is suggested that a lack of operational analysis of AW-RC displacement and behavior modification is responsible for some confusion about the two areas, has retarded developments and conclusions about behavior modification, and has contributed to, or produced, termination of research on AW-RC displacement. This review uncovers two major sets of results and one interesting observation. First, the displacement effect and the extinction effect of displacement are strongly supported, but the therapeutic effect of displacement is not supported. Second, time-delay that is characterized by eating under deprivation in an irrelevant situation does appear to produce true therapeutic effects of large magnitude. Berkun's observation, opening to other nondisplacement but AW-RC related observations and findings, suggests separable aspects of AW-RC behavior that are not correspondingly observable with other methodologies.

The development of fixed-ratio performance under the influence of ribonucleic acid

The transition from fixed-ratio 1 performance (every response reinforced) to fixed-ratio 30 performance (every thirtieth response reinforced) was studied in nine pigeons. These were divided into three treatment groups given daily oral doses of saline, or 250 mg/kg/day or 500 mg/kg/day of yeast ribonucleic acid. Detailed computer-assisted analyses of how fixed-ratio behavior develops revealed the following typical sequence. After the transition, the first few ratios typically were emitted without long interresponse times within the ratio. Steady responding then ceased, and numerous long interresponse times occurred, with no systematic relationship to ordinal position within the ratio. Gradually, a new pattern evolved, characterized by a consistently long post-reinforcement time, a border region of the next few interresponse times within which the mean interresponse time monotonically decreased, and short interresponse times within the last 80% of the ratio. Long interresponse times were eliminated from this last section of the ratio without regard to proximity to reinforcement. Various analytical procedures suggested that the final pattern can be conceived, in part, as the shaping of a reliable response topography. The group of three pigeons given 250 mg/kg/day of yeast ribonucleic acid responded at higher rates than the saline and 500 mg/kg/day groups. The latter group, in contrast to the saline and lower dose groups, which continued to increase their rates, reached a rate asymptote very early.

Preference for locus of punishment in a response sequence

Food-deprived pigeons pecked a key under a schedule in which grain was made available after the seventieth peck. In each sequence of 70 responses, either the first, middle, or final response was followed by electric shock. Before the first response of each sequence, each response on a second key changed the color of the food key and the schedule of shock that was correlated with the food key color. Each pigeon preferred a schedule of shock, in that each of the three shock schedules did not occur equally often. The preferred shock schedule and the strength of the preference varied among the pigeons. The overall rate of responding by a pigeon under a given shock schedule was directly related to the pigeon's relative preference for that schedule, except when shock after the first response in the sequence was the most preferred schedule.
