The effects of cocaine on behavior maintained by timeout from avoidance

Cocaine and heroin interact differently with nondrug reinforcers in a choice situation

The present study used a rat choice model to test how cocaine or heroin economically interacted with two different nondrug reinforcers along the substitute-to-complement continuum. In Experiment 1, the nondrug alternative was the negative reinforcer timeout-from-avoidance (TOA)-that is, rats could press a lever to obtain a period of safety from footshock. One group of rats chose between cocaine and TOA and another group chose between heroin and TOA. The relative prices of the reinforcers were manipulated across phases while controlling for potential income effects. When cocaine was the reinforcer, rats reacted to price changes by increasing their allocation of behavior to the more expensive option, thereby maintaining relatively proportional intake of cocaine and TOA reinforcers across prices, suggesting these reinforcers were complements here. In contrast, when heroin became relatively cheap, rats increased allocation of income to heroin and decreased allocation of income to TOA, suggesting that heroin substituted for safety. Additionally, rats were willing to accept more footshocks when heroin was easily available. In Experiment 2, the nondrug alternative was saccharin, a positive reinforcer. Heroin and saccharin were complements, but there was no consistent effect of price changes on the allocation of behavior between cocaine and saccharin. As a model of the processes that could be involved in human drug use, these results show that drug-taking behavior depends on the type of drug, the type of nondrug alternative available, and the prices of both. Assessing the role of effort reduction in the reinforcing efficacy of timeout from avoidance

Rats responded on concurrent schedules of shock-postponement or deletion (avoidance) and timeout from avoidance. In Experiment 1, 3 rats' responses on one lever postponed shocks for 20 s and responses on a second lever produced a 1-min timeout according to a variable-interval 45-s schedule. Across conditions, a warning signal (white noise) was presented 19.5 s, 16 s, 12 s, 8 s, or 4 s before an impending shock. Raising the duration of the warning signal increased both avoidance and timeout response rates. Timeout responding, although positively correlated with avoidance responding, was not correlated with the prevailing shock rate. In Experiment 2, 3 rats' responses on one lever deleted scheduled shocks according to a variable-cycle 30-s schedule and responses on a second lever produced a 2-min timeout as described above. After this baseline condition, the avoidance lever was removed and noncontingent shocks were delivered at intervals yoked to the receipt of shocks in the baseline sessions. Timeout responding decreased when the avoidance lever was removed, even though the shock-frequency reduction afforded by the timeout remained constant. These results suggest that a key factor in the reinforcing efficacy of timeout is suspension of the requirement to work to avoid shock, rather than the reduction in shock frequency associated with timeout.

Análise custo-benefício do reforço negativo em contingências de esquiva sinalizada

Este estudo analisa as funções dos sinais em contingências de esquiva e descreve a interação organismo-ambiente como exemplo de relação custo-benefício. Seis ratos foram expostos a um procedimento de esquiva sinalizada, onde um período seguro (PS) de 20 s era seguido pelo período de aviso (PA) de 10 s e, na ausência de respostas, um choque era liberado e reiniciava o processo. Em sucessivas condições experimentais, o número de respostas requerido durante o PA para cancelar o choque aumentou de (1) um para 10 (FR1, 3, 5, 7 e 10), mantendo-se FR1 durante o PS. Observou-se que a taxa de respostas no PA expressa uma função U invertido em relação aos esquemas FR programados, a taxa de respostas no PS e a taxa de choques liberados expressam uma função direta em relação ao tamanho da FR e a taxa de sinais (número de vezes que o sinal foi apresentado dividido pela duração do PS) expressa uma função inversa em relação à razão requerida durante o PA. Estes resultados são consistentes com uma análise custo-benefício do desempenho em esquiva sinalizada: sendo requeridas poucas respostas durante o sinal, os sujeitos tendiam a responder menos no PS, minimizando esforço; e devido ao aumento progressivo no custo da resposta durante o PA, tornou-se menor o esforço pelo mesmo benefício responder durante o PS.

Extinction of responding maintained by timeout from avoidance

The resistance to extinction of lever pressing maintained by timeout from avoidance was examined. Rats were trained under a concurrent schedule in which responses on one lever postponed shock on a free-operant avoidance (Sidman) schedule (response-shock interval = 30 s) and responses on another lever produced 2 min of signaled timeout from avoidance on a variable-ratio 15 schedule. Following extended training (106 to 363 2-hr sessions), two experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1 two different methods of extinction were compared. In one session, all shocks were omitted, and there was some weakening of avoidance but little change in timeout responding. In another session, responding on the timeout lever was ineffective, and under these conditions timeout responding showed rapid extinction. The within-session patterns produced by extinction manipulations were different than the effects of drugs such as morphine, which also reduces timeout responding. In Experiment 2 shock was omitted for many consecutive sessions. Response rates on the avoidance lever declined relatively rapidly, with noticeable reductions within 5 to 10 sessions. Extinction of the timeout lever response was much slower than extinction of avoidance in all 4 rats, and 2 rats continued responding at baseline levels for more than 20 extinction sessions. These results show that lever pressing maintained by negative reinforcement can be highly resistant to extinction. The persistence of responding on the timeout lever after avoidance extinction is not readily explained by current theories.
