Abstract
The aim of this review was to update knowledge about the prevalence of periodontitis in Latin America and the Caribbean. A critical review of was performed of all cross-sectional or cohort studies selected, pertaining to the region, and thirty-five studies conducted in 12 countries were selected. The countries with nationally representative studies were Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Uruguay. The prevalence of periodontal disease or need for periodontal treatment varied between the different studies and countries depending on the age group, the methodology used, and the case definition. The prevalence of severe periodontitis aged between 5.8% and 49.7% in adults. In adolescents, the prevalence of moderate to severe periodontitis was 15.3%. Furthermore, a high prevalence of gingival bleeding in adolescents was reported. When analyzing the studies that used the Community Periodontal Index (CPI), Centers for Diseases Control and American Academy Periodontology (CDC/AAP) case definition, it was observed that as the age of the individuals analyzed increased, the prevalence of periodontal disease also increased. Whereas this rereview revealed that although the number of regional and nationally representative studies that analyzed the prevalence of periodontitis has risen in recent years, their methodological heterogeneity prevents global conclusions to be drawn concerning the region. Therefore, this ratifies the need to generate alliances between countries with the purpose of joining individual efforts to achieve collective goals which, among other objectives, will translate into conducting multicenter studies. These studies would allow description and monitoring of the epidemiological behavior of periodontitis in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate different aspects of periodontal examination among Danish adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS In all, 521 Danish adolescents underwent a periodontal examination and answered a questionnaire concerning their self-perception of periodontal health (PH). Furthermore, 107 participants reported their pain experience during periodontal examination using a visual analog scale. The self-perception of PH and the pain experience were correlated with plaque score (PS), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing pocket depth (PPD), and interdental clinical attachment loss (CAL). RESULTS Good PH was reported by 424 (81%) of the participants. However, the association between PH and PS, BOP, PPD, and CAL was small (sensitivity: 7.7, 7.8, 12.0, and 0.0%, respectively). Only 57 (11%) of the participants reported bleeding gums (BG) during tooth brushing, but the correlation with BOP showed a sensitivity of 11.7%. The specificity of both self-perception of PH and BG was high. Sixty-seven (66.6%) of the participants experienced 'mild pain' during periodontal examination. There were no differences in periodontal outcomes between the pain groups (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS The adolescents showed a poor ability to identify themselves as having poor PH and BG, and 67 (66.6%) of the adolescents experienced mild pain during periodontal examination. The findings emphasize the need for dental staff to monitor the PH of Danish adolescents and advise them as necessary.

Abstract
Background: Gypsy “Narikuravars” constituted separate sociocultural groups having distinct cultures, customs, traditions, and lifestyles. Oral health-seeking behavior of this group remains to be an ignored part. This study aims to assess the oral hygiene practices and knowledge on periodontal diseases and therapy among Gypsy Narikuravars in Puducherry. Materials and Methods: The total study population consisted of 100 subjects, and a performed validated pro forma about oral hygiene practices and knowledge on periodontal diseases was used. Results: There is no significant association between sociodemographic factors and knowledge on periodontal disease and therapy. Majority (90%) of the participants have poor knowledge of periodontal disease and therapy. 56% of the participants used their fingers to clean the teeth, and very few subjects (13%) used toothbrush to clean their teeth, and most of the participants (92%) brushes once daily using manual method. Conclusion: The practice of poor oral hygiene and lack of knowledge on periodontal disease and therapy was observed. Hence, the implementation of oral health programs and provision of comprehensive health services for these Gypsy population should be a high priority.

Abstract
Tobacco use contributes to more mortality and morbidity globally than any other behavioral risk factor. Adverse effects do not spare the oral cavity, with many oral diseases more common, and treatments less successful, in the tobacco-using patient. Many of the oral health effects of cigarette smoking are well established, but other forms of tobacco, including cigars and smokeless tobacco, merit dental professionals' attention. Recently, an expanding variety of new or emerging tobacco and/or nicotine products has been brought to market, most prominently electronic cigarettes, but also including heated tobacco and other noncombustible nicotine products. The use of cannabis (marijuana) is increasing and also has risks for oral health and dental treatment. For the practicing periodontist, and all dental professionals, providing sound patient recommendations requires knowledge of the general and oral health implications associated with this wide range of tobacco and nicotine products and cannabis. This review provides an overview of selected tobacco and nicotine products with an emphasis on their implications for periodontal disease risk and clinical management. Also presented are strategies for tobacco use counselling and cessation support that dental professionals can implement in practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is limited evidence of a temporal relationship between periodontal diseases and self-perceived general health. To plug this knowledge gap, we aimed to assess how periodontal health affects future self-rated health (SRH). METHODS We collected data from five waves of an annual nationwide Japanese survey of dental patients from 2015 to 2019. The analysis of repeated measurements included 9306 observations from 4242 patients aged 20 years or older. The clinical periodontitis measurements were bleeding on probing, deepest periodontal pocket depth and most severe clinical attachment loss (CAL). We used a self-administered questionnaire to collect data on sociodemographic characteristics, diabetes history, health behaviour, SRH and self-reported periodontitis. We applied 2-level ordered logistic regression models for repeated measurements to examine the relationships between SRH (time t) and 1-year-lagged periodontal health (time t-1) after adjusting for covariates. RESULTS The percentage of SRH responses recorded at time t as 'good', 'moderate' and 'poor' were 36.9%, 52.4% and 10.7%, respectively. Multivariate analyses showed that the risk of poorer SRH at time t increased in patients with CAL ≥7 mm (odds ratio [OR] = 1.15, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.02-1.30), those who reported bleeding gums (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.21-1.46) and those who perceived swollen gums (OR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.26-1.56) at time t-1. Sensitivity analyses using the 4-year follow-up model and 3-year-lagged cohort model also showed consistent results. CONCLUSION Periodontitis shows a gradual contribution to future SRH in dental patients, even after adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, general health and health-related behaviours.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a highly prevalent disease. As it progresses, it causes serious morbidity in the form of periodontal abscesses and tooth loss and, in the latter stages, pain. It is also now known that periodontitis is strongly associated with several nonoral diseases. Thus, patients with periodontitis are at greater risk for the development and/or exacerbation of diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cardiovascular diseases, among other conditions. Although it is without question that specific groups of oral bacteria which populate dental plaque play a causative role in the development of periodontitis, it is now thought that once this disease has been triggered, other factors play an equal, and possibly more important, role in its progression, particularly in severe cases or in cases that prove difficult to treat. In this regard, we allude to the host response, specifically the notion that the host, once infected with oral periodontal pathogenic bacteria, will mount a defense response mediated largely through the innate immune system. The most abundant cell type of the innate immune system - polymorphonuclear neutrophils - can, when protecting the host from microbial invasion, mount a response that includes upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines, matrix metalloproteinases, and reactive oxygen species, all of which then contribute to the tissue damage and loss of teeth commonly associated with periodontitis. Of the mechanisms referred to here, we suggest that upregulation of reactive oxygen species might play one of the most important roles in the establishment and progression of periodontitis (as well as in other diseases of inflammation) through the development of oxidative stress. In this overview, we discuss both innate and epigenetic factors (eg, diabetes, smoking) that lead to the development of oxidative stress. This oxidative stress then provides an environment conducive to the destructive processes observed in periodontitis. Therefore, we shall describe some of the fundamental characteristics of oxidative stress and its effects on the periodontium, discuss the diseases and other factors that cause oxidative stress, and, finally, review potentially novel therapeutic approaches for the management (and possibly even the reversal) of periodontitis, which rely on the use of therapies, such as resveratrol and other antioxidants, that provide increased antioxidant activity in the host.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To date, a few studies have documented the detailed periodontal conditions of a Japanese population. It is important to know if the awareness of Japanese nationals and dentists regarding oral hygiene and prevention of periodontal disease have improved when compared with the past in Japan for the development of future scenarios regarding prevention. The aim of this study was to investigate the severity, prevalence, and extent of periodontal disease in the adult population of the city of Takahagi, Japan. Results were also compared with those of an epidemiological study performed in Japan in the 1980s. METHODS A total of 582 (aged 20 to 89 years) randomly sampled Takahagi residents answered a comprehensive questionnaire and participated in clinical examinations. RESULTS The mean percentages of tooth surfaces harboring plaque and exhibiting BOP were 59.5 ± 20.9% and 31.1 ± 21.1%, respectively. The mean PPD and CAL were 2.5 ± 0.5 mm and 2.9 ± 1.0 mm, respectively. Compared with results of the 1980s survey, the mean percentages of plaque and bleeding on probing were lower in the current population. The mean CAL and prevalence of attachment loss of ≥5 mm in some age groups were higher in the present study than in the 1980s study. There were no statistically significant differences with respect to mean probing depth between the 1980s and current age groups. CONCLUSIONS Periodontal disease was still prevalent in the current Japanese population, even though some improvement occurred. Proper public health programs therefore need to be established.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Most of the oral infections with odontogenic origin are very common and can be treated by tooth extraction, endodontic therapy, or surgical treatment. Other infectious lesions are the manifestations of systemic diseases such as tuberculosis and syphilis. Skin and underlying subcutaneous tissue, fascia, or muscle is also involved with infectious diseases which range from superficial epidermal infections to very serious necrotizing fasciitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS An extensive literature in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus search was performed from 1980 to 2017. All related articles were analyzed. RESULTS Most oral infections have odontogenic origin. Skin and the underlying subcutaneous tissue, fascia, or muscles are also involved with infectious diseases which range from superficial epidermal infections to very serious necrotizing fasciitis. CONCLUSIONS These facts prove that the interaction between the oral cavity, face skin, and the other organs can risk the people's life. The establishment of a correct diagnosis and recognition of clinical findings are the crucial steps to support and improve professional orofacial health status.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of molars with furcation involvements grades II and III in adults participating in the Jönköping Oral Health Study 2003. The second aim was to study correlations between different variables and the presence of furcation involvement in these individuals. The present study was performed using bitewing and apical radiographs from 329 subjects. Furcations were considered healthy if the furcation was filled with bone up to the fornix. Two thousand fourteen molars fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The prevalence of molars with furcation involvements was 8.3%. Univariate analysis showed that plaque, age, and presence of periodontal pockets were significantly correlated with furcation-involved molar/s (P ˂ 0.0001). Gingivitis and education were also significantly correlated to the presence of furcation involvement (P ˂ 0.006) and (P ≤ 0.01), respectively. Gender had no association with presence of involvements. Multivariate analysis showed that age and presence of periodontal pockets were significantly correlated with furcation involvement (P ˂ 0.0001). Smoking was also found to be associated with furcation involvement (P ˂ 0.04). The tooth most frequently and least likely displaying furcation involvement was the maxillary first molar and the mandibular second molar, respectively. Periodontal pockets, age, and smoking were risk indicators for furcation involvement.

Abstract
Although the prevalence of tobacco use has declined in some parts of the world, tobacco use remains a persistent and, in some cases, growing problem that will continue to be a fundamental challenge facing dental practitioners in the decades ahead. Dental practitioners have a unique opportunity and professional obligation to be a positive influence in reducing the economic and social burden inflicted by tobacco use on dental and general health. In this article, the current noninvasive, evidence-based approaches are presented for dental practitioners to help patients avoid initiating tobacco use, to encourage and assist patients in ceasing tobacco use and to address tobacco-induced damage to periodontal supporting tissues.

Abstract
AIM To describe the prevalence, severity and extension of clinical attachment loss (CAL) and to study the predictors in 15- to 19-year-old adolescents from high schools in the Latin America. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional, epidemiological study was performed. The sample included 1070 high school adolescents 15-19 years of age from Santiago de Chile (Chile), Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza (Argentina), Montevideo (Uruguay), Quito (Ecuador) and Medellín (Colombia). Calibrated examiners performed full mouth, six sites per tooth clinical examination. RESULTS There was a response rate of 100%. The prevalence of CAL ≥3 mm in ≥1 site was 32.6%, probing pocket depth ≥4 mm was 59.3% and bleeding on probing (BoP) ≥25% was 28.6%. The logistic regression analysis adjusted for cities revealed that smoking (OR = 1.6), attending public school (OR = 2.3) and having a BoP ≥25% (OR = 4.2) were positively associated with CAL ≥3 mm in ≥ 1 site. CONCLUSION Clinical attachment loss was prevalent in Latin America adolescents and it is associated with smoking, attendance public school and BoP.

Abstract
This literature review provides an overview of the current scenario regarding the impact of smoking on the progression and treatment of periodontitis; clinical, microbiological and immunological data from studies from our and other groups are presented. In general, preclinical and clinical data are unanimous in demonstrating that smokers present increased susceptibility, greater severity and faster progression of periodontal disease compared with nonsmokers. The evidence further demonstrates that smokers lose more teeth and have a less favorable response to therapy than do nonsmokers. Although it is well established that smoking significantly impacts on the onset, progression and outcome of periodontal disease, the mechanisms involved remain unclear. More importantly, some of the reported deleterious effects of smoking on periodontal tissues have been reported to be reversible upon participation in smoking-cessation programs. Therefore, clinicians should strongly advise smokers to enroll in cessation strategies, even temporarily, in order to improve the overall outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Major depressive disorder (MDD) has been associated with alterations in the neuroendocrine system and immune function and may be associated with an increased susceptibility to cardiovascular disease, cancer and autoimmune/inflammatory disease. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between periodontitis and MDD in a convenience sample of hospital outpatients. MATERIAL AND METHODS The sample consisted of 72 physically healthy subjects (36 outpatients with MDD and 36 age-matched controls [± 3 years]). Patients with bipolar disorder, eating disorders and psychotic disorders were excluded. Probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level were recorded at six sites per tooth. Depression was assessed by means of Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. RESULTS Extent of clinical attachment level and probing pocket depth were not different between controls and subjects with depression for the following thresholds: ≥ 3 mm (Mann-Whitney, p = 0.927 and 0.756); ≥ 4 mm (Mann-Whitney, p = 0.656 and 0.373); ≥ 5 mm (Mann-Whitney, p = 0.518 and 0.870);, and ≥ 6 mm (Mann-Whitney, p = 0.994 and 0.879). Depression parameters were not associated with clinical attachment level ≥ 5 mm in this sample. Smoking was associated with loss of attachment ≥ 5 mm in the multivariable logistic regression model (odds ratio = 6.99, 95% confidence interval = 2.00-24.43). CONCLUSIONS In this sample, periodontal clinical parameters were not different between patients with MDD and control subjects. There was no association between depression and periodontitis.

Abstract
AIMS To describe the subgingival microbial profiles of the major putative periodontal pathogens and investigate their role as diagnostic markers for destructive periodontal diseases in an untreated and isolated population. MATERIALS AND METHODS The source population consisted of all subjects aged ≥ 12 years in an isolated Brazilian population. An interview and a full-mouth clinical examination were conducted and subgingival plaque samples were obtained from four sites per subject. PCR analyses were used to identify the following micro-organisms: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Prevotella intermedia and Campylobacter rectus. RESULTS Among the 214 clinically examined subjects (81% response), 170 of the 195 dentate subjects provided plaque samples. Two subgingival microbial profiles were identified: absence of all micro-organisms but Campylobacter rectus or co-occurrence of Tannerella forsythia and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Using a combination of microbiological and interview information, the smallest overall misclassification in the diagnosis of extensive clinical attachment loss ≥ 5 mm was 8.8% (4.7% of non-cases and 22% of cases), but this was not different from the 7.6% (2.3% non-cases and 24.4% cases) obtained using clinical and interview information (p = 0.292). CONCLUSION Specific microbial profiles could be identified in this isolated population. They did not result in significant superior diagnostic accuracy when compared to traditional clinical markers.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to review the Brazilian epidemiologic literature on periodontal outcomes and socio-demographic factors, assessing bibliographic and methodological characteristics of this scientific production, as well as the consistency and statistical significance of the examined associations. A systematic review was carried out in six bibliographic sources. The review was limited to the period between 1999 and 2008, without any other type of restriction. Among the 410 papers identified, 29 were included in the review. An increasing number of articles, specifically in the last four years of study, was observed. However, there is a concentration of studies in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, and many of them are not closely connected to theoretical formulations in the field. In spite of these shortcomings, the review findings corroborate the idea that poor socioeconomic conditions are associated with periodontal outcomes, as demonstrated primarily by income and schooling indicators.
