Tooth Shade and Blood Type: A Descriptive Cross-sectional Study in Tunisia

AIM

The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of tooth shade and its correlation with blood type.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This study analyzed 312 blood donors at the university Hospital in Monastir between November 2021 and June 2022. Both male and female subjects were included, with ages ranging from 18 to 60 years old. Patients with certain dental conditions or habits were excluded from the study. The study recorded various information about blood donors, including gender, age, governorate of origin, tooth shade, and blood type. The tooth shade values were recorded using A-D shade guide. Data input and tabulation were carried out using Microsoft Excel 2016 and SPSS (version 25.0).

RESULTS

The study included 312 participants, with 85.58% males and 14.42% females. Tooth shade value B was the most prevalent (43%), and D was the least prevalent (7%). The statistical analysis showed that there was no significant link between tooth shade and blood type. However, there were three statistically significant categories: Blood type B/Tooth shade B, Blood type O/Tooth shade C, and Blood Type O/Tooth shade D.

CONCLUSION

The study examined the link between tooth color and blood type but did not find a significant link. However, significant values were found in different subgroups. A wider selection of subjects and a more rigorous measurement equipment might lead to more favorable results.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

By considering the patient's blood type alongside other relevant factors, clinicians can enhance the accuracy and precision of tooth shade selection, resulting in harmonious and natural-looking dental restorations. This approach improves patient satisfaction and acceptance.

Tooth color in dental students from Buenos Aires University, Dental School, Argentina

The aim of this study was to evaluate tooth color in dental students at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The participants were 184 students (157 women and 27 men) aged 21 to 33 years, mean age 24.45 (SD 2.79) years, who were in the fourth year of their dental degree. They agreed to participate through an informed consent. Exclusion criteria were: having undergone a bleaching treatment within the previous six months, presence of total or partial peripheral restoration, pigmentations, fracture, carious and non-carious lesions or absence of the right upper central incisor (1.1). A dental prophylaxis procedure was performed on the buccal surface of each 1.1 tooth with a prophylaxis brush (TDV) mounted on a low-speed rotary instrument Kavo 2068 CHC (Germany) micromotor and a Kavo LUX K201(Germany) contra-angle. Shade was measured in the middle third of each 1.1 tooth, by the same observer, using a VITA Easyshade V spectrophotometer (Zahnfabrikn Bad Säckingen, Germany), which was calibrated before each determination according to manufacturer's instructions, in the same dental unit (Sino S2316), with natural illumination, in the same time slot, without using the dental unit lamp. The results were recorded in an ad-hoc form and rates and confidence interval were obtained. Shade prevalence percentages (95% CI) were: A1: 46.2 (38.83 - 53.68); followed by A2 and B2, both with 17.39 (12.21 - 23.66); A3: 6.52 (3.41-11.11); B1: 4.35 (1.9-8.39); D2: 2.72 (0.89 - 6.23); B3: 2.17 (0.60-5.47) and C2: 1.09 (0.13-3.87); D3, C3, A3.5 and A4: 0.54 (0.01-2.99). Shades D1 and C1 were not determined in any subject. Within the conditions of this study, A1 was the most prevalent shade in central incisors, followed by A2 and B2.

Tooth Shade Relationship with Age, Gender, and Skin Color in a Saudi Population: A Cross-Sectional Study

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between tooth shade among different groups of patients according to their age, gender, and skin color in a Saudi population. Materials and methods: Participants were divided based on age into Group 1 (10–20 years), Group 2 (21–30 years), Group 3 (31–40 years), and Group 4 (41+ years), and according to gender. Tooth shade was measured by Vita easyshade, Shade scanner, 3D Master shade system. The skin color was determined according to the Firzpatrick Scale. It consists of six shades, namely: I, II, III, IV, V, and VI. The skin complexion of the participants was divided into six categories: white/very fair, fair, light brown, moderate brown, dark brown, and black. Results: One hundred and ninety-eight individuals were recruited. Around 70% were males. Females had 25.4% A2 followed by 22% A1, and 22% A3 shade types, while males had B3 shade (18%) followed by A2 and A3 (15.8%). A statistically significant difference was observed between shade and gender (p < 0.05). A statistically significant difference was observed between shade and age group (p < 0.05), where increased age was correlated with darker teeth shades. Shade A1 was correlated with type I skin color in 57.1% of individuals. Skin color type II had A2 as a dominant shade by 34.1%. A2 and A3 shades were equally observed in skin color III by 20.3%. Overall, statistically significant differences were observed between shade and skin color groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In conclusion, the most frequent classical shade noted among male and female participants was shade type A, which represents reddish brownish. Group 2 (21–30 years) had the B3 shade as the most prominent shade type among age groups. Gender, age, and skin types all showed a significant relation with the tooth shade.

Visual and digital tooth shade selection methods, related effective factors and conditions, and their accuracy and precision: A literature review

OBJECTIVE

Despite developments of dental shade selection methods, shade selection is still a challenge affecting esthetic outcomes. The purpose of this review was to discuss visual and digital shade taking methods, related effective factors and conditions, and their accuracy and precision to find out the most accurate, precise shade selection method available in dentistry.

OVERVIEW

The key terms of accuracy, background, ceramic, color, colorimeter, color analysis, color science, color measurement, color measuring instrument, color matching, composite resin, dental/tooth shade guide, digital camera, esthetics, imaging, imaging application/program/ software, intraoral scanner, light source, photography, precision, shade, shade matching/ determination/prediction/reproduction/selection, shade taking device, spectrophotometer, spectrophotometry, tooth color measurement, tooth color/shade, and visual perception were used separately and jointly to detect related English-language articles published between January 1, 1985, and January 1, 2021. Electronic/non-electronic searches of Google Scholar/PubMed/Scopus/Web of Science were accomplished. Consequently, 249 articles were considered. Accordingly, the digital methods show higher accuracy and precision compared to the visual methods while requiring to be enhanced regarding accuracy to achieve ideal shade taking results.

CONCLUSIONS

Dental spectrophotometers provide the highest overall accuracy and precision among different shade selection methods while needing clinical setting to control related effective factors/conditions and technological improvement to perform optimally.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Different factors can affect the accuracy and precision of tooth shade selection methods and devices. The understanding of these effective factors may lead to a standard shade taking protocol using accurate, precise methods and devices.
