Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Sarcopenia and myosteatosis are common in patients with cirrhosis. The study aimed to evaluate efficacy of ultrasound to monitor muscle status during branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation and/or muscle exercise interventional approaches. PATIENTS AND METHODS A randomized controlled study, included 220 liver cirrhosis patients with Child- Pugh B and C, randomized into a control group (55 patients) received only the standard care, and interventional groups (165 patients) equally distributed into three subgroups, in addition to standard care, they received BCAA, programmed exercise, or BCAA and programmed exercise. At baseline and after 28 days, all participants were subjected to ultrasound-measured quadriceps muscle thickness and echo-intensity, muscle strength using handgrip, performance using short physical performance battery (SPPB), Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score and nutritional assessment using 7- point Subjective Global Assessment Score (SGA) and laboratory assessment. RESULTS All interventional groups showed a significant improvement in the ultrasound detected quadriceps muscle thickness (p = 0.001) and echo intensity, in addition to muscle strength, muscle performance, and SGA. Hematological parameters (hemoglobin and platelet count), biochemical parameters (ALT, AST, bilirubin, creatinine, urea and INR) and MELD score were also improved in the interventional groups. In Child-Pugh B patients BCAA combined with exercise showed an add-on effect. CONCLUSION BCAA supplements, programed muscle exercise and both are useful interventional methods in improving muscle quality and quantity in cirrhosis patients, which can be monitored by ultrasound. The best results can be achieved by combined intervention in Child-Pugh B, while in Child-Pugh C single intervention may lead to an acceptable improvement. The trial was registered retrospectively in the Clinical Trials Registry (registration number NCT06088550).

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Ascites impairs the correct diagnosis and nutritional management in patients with cirrhosis, because the body weight, which is needed for nutritional assessment and calculation of nutritional needs, is overestimated. To adjust the weight in patients with ascites, dietetic guidances indicate substracting 2.2-14 kg or 5-15% of the measured body weight according to the degree of ascites, however, there is a lack of evidence to substantiate these values. The aim of this study was to develop new prediction equations to estimate the dry weight, comparing them with the currently used weight adjustments in patients with refractory cirrhotic ascites. METHODS Cross-sectional study, that included patients with decompensated cirrhosis undergoing large-volume paracentesis. Patients were submitted to nutritional risk screening, nutritional assessment, and anthropometric measurements that included body weight, abdominal circumference (both measured before and after paracentesis) height, and upper mid-arm circumference. The volume of ascitic fluid drained was also registered. For the predictions of dry weight, linear regression models were performed using as predictor variables: height, pre-paracentesis weight, pre-paracentesis abdominal circumference, or mid-upper arm circumference, and as response variable: post-paracentesis weight. The capacity of these models to predict the post-paracentesis weight was evaluated by comparing it with the currently used predictions through the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the mean squared error (MSE). RESULTS Nineteen patients were included, 15 male, and 18 with high nutritional risk and malnutrition. The difference between post-paracentesis weight and pre-paracentesis weight was -5.0 (-3.6 to -9.9) kg, similar to ascitic fluid volume drained. Two equations were developed to predict post-paracentesis weight. ICC values showed that both prediction equations were strongly correlated (r > 0.94) with post-paracentesis weight. Our models also showed lower MSEs (<17.97), compared with the current predictions (MSEs <64.19, when the pre-paracentesis weight is adjusted from absolute values and MSEs <33.24 when adjusted from percentage values), indicating a more accurate prediction. CONCLUSION The predictive equations from this study may be better options for dry weight estimation in patients with refractory cirrhotic ascites since they showed higher reliability compared to the currently used weight adjustment. External validation in a larger sample is still needed to confirm the clinical applicability of these equations.

Assessment of the nutritional status of patients before, one, and three months after liver transplantation: A multi-center longitudinal study. Clin Nutr ESPEN 2023; 53:244-250. Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutrition management is an important pre-operative and post-operative challenge in liver transplantation. Preoperative malnutrition is associated with increased length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay, mortality, and length of hospital stay in liver transplant patients. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status of patients before and after liver transplantation and post-transplant complications. METHOD This longitudinal study was conducted on liver transplant patients in Montaserieh Hospital, Mashhad and Firoozgar Hospital, Tehran from May 2021 to January 2022. Demographic characteristics, Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) standard questionnaire, anthropometric indices, laboratory analyses, and 3-day food records were collected before, one, and three months after transplantation. RESULTS Thirty-nine patients with a mean age of 48.4 ± 14.2 were evaluated. Prevalence of severe malnutrition was 43.6% (56.3% women and 34.8% men) before transplantation. Body mass index (BMI), body weight, lean mass, total body water, and total serum protein significantly decreased after transplantation compared to before transplantation (P < 0.001). One month after transplantation, 54% of the patients lost more than 10% of their weight. Energy intake increased significantly after transplantation (P < 0.001). A significant relationship was observed between BMI (P = 0.005) and metabolic complications and between Arm Muscle Circumference and renal complications (P = 0.003) after transplantation. A cut-off point of 4.6 was determined for the phase angle in terms of SGA three months after transplantation. CONCLUSION Malnutrition, weight loss, and nutritional problems were common in liver transplantation patients. Screening for nutritional status is necessary in these patients to treat or prevent malnutrition-related complications.

Abstract
Objective Bioelectrical impedance-derived phase angle (PA) has exhibited good prognostic values in several non-critical illnesses. However, its predictive value for critically ill patients remains unclear. Thus, we aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the relationship between PA and survival in such a patient population. Materials and methods We searched for relevant studies in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane database up to Jan 20, 2022. Meta-analyses were performed to determine the association between the baseline PA after admission with survival. We further conducted subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses to explore the sources of heterogeneity. Results We included 20 studies with 3,770 patients. Patients with low PA were associated with a significantly higher mortality risk than those with normal PA (OR 2.45, 95% CI 1.97-3.05, P < 0.00001). Compared to survivors, non-survivors had lower PA values (MD 0.82°, 95% CI 0.66-0.98; P < 0.00001). Similar results were also found when pooling studies reported regression analyses of PA as continuous (OR = 0.64; 95% CI 0.52-0.79, P < 0.00001) or categorical variable (OR = 2.42; 95% CI 1.76-3.34; P < 0.00001). These results were further confirmed in subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses. Conclusion Our results indicated that PA may be an important prognostic factor of survival in critically ill patients and can nicely complement the deficiencies of other severity scoring systems in the ICU setting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No global consensus exists on diagnostic criteria for malnutrition. Muscular deficits and functional impairments are major components of available malnutrition diagnostic frameworks because these facets of nutrition status significantly impact outcomes. The purpose of this review is to explore which body composition assessment (BCA) and functional status assessment (FSA) tools are being used for nutrition assessment (NA) and monitoring the response to nutrition interventions (RNIs) in adult inpatients. METHODS A literature search of Embase, Medline (Ovid), Web of Science, and Cochrane Central was performed to identify studies that used BCA and/or FSA tools for NA (along with an accepted NA diagnostic framework) and/or for monitoring RNI in adult inpatients. RESULTS The search yielded 3667 articles; 94 were included in the review. The number of studies using BCA and/or FSA tools for NA was 47 and also 47 for monitoring RNI. Seventy-nine percent of studies used bioimpedance for BCA, and 97% that included FSA utilized handgrip strength. When compared against sets of diagnostic criteria, many of the BCA and FSA tools showed promising associations with nutrition status. CONCLUSION Bioimpedance methods are the most widely used bedside BCA tools, and handgrip strength is the most widely used FSA tool; however, these methods are being used with a variety of protocols, algorithms, and interpretation practices in heterogeneous populations. To create a standardized nutrition status assessment process there is a need for validation studies on bedside methods and the development of globally standardized assessment protocols in clinical inpatient settings.

Abstract
Sarcopenia has recently been studied in both adults and children and was found to be a prognostic marker for adverse outcome in a variety of patient groups. Our research showed that sarcopenia is a relevant marker in predicting outcome in children with solid organ tumors, such as hepatoblastoma and neuroblastoma. This was especially true in very ill, high-risk groups. Children with cancer have a higher likelihood of ongoing loss of skeletal muscle mass due to a mismatch in energy intake and expenditure. Additionally, the effects of cancer therapy, hormonal alterations, chronic inflammation, multi-organ dysfunction, and a hypermetabolic state all contribute to a loss of skeletal muscle mass. Sarcopenia seems to be able to pinpoint this waste to a high degree in a new and objective way, making it an additional tool in predicting and improving outcome in children. This article focuses on the current state of sarcopenia in children with solid organ tumors. It details the pathophysiological mechanisms behind sarcopenia, highlighting the technical features of the available methods for measuring muscle mass, strength, and function, including artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques. It also reviews the latest research on sarcopenia in children, focusing on children with solid organ tumors.

Abstract
Computed tomography (CT)-derived body metrics such as skeletal muscle index (SMI), psoas muscle index (PMI), and subcutaneous fat area index (ScFI) are measurable components of sarcopenia, frailty, and nutrition. While these body metrics are advocated in adults for predicting postoperative outcomes after liver transplantation (LT), little is known about their value in pediatric populations. This study assessed the relation between preoperative CT-based body metrics and postoperative short-term outcomes in pediatric LT recipients. Patients aged 0-18 years who underwent a primary LT were retrospectively included (n = 101; median age 0.5 years; range 0.2-17.1). SMI, PMI, and ScFI were derived from preoperative axial CT slices. Postoperative outcomes and complications within 90 days were correlated with the CT-based body metrics. To classify postoperative infections, the Clavien-Dindo (CD) classification was used. Subgroup analyses were performed for age groups (<1, 1-10, and >10 years old). An optimal threshold for test performance was defined using Youden's J-statistic and receiver operating characteristic curve as appropriate. ScFI was significantly (P = 0.001) correlated with moderate to severe postoperative infections (CD grade 3-5) in children aged <1 year, with the optimal ScFI threshold being ≤27.1 cm2 /m2 (sensitivity 80.4% and specificity 77.8%). A weak negative correlation between SMI and the total duration of hospital stay (R = -0.3; P = 0.01) and intensive care unit (ICU) stay (R = -0.3; P = 0.01) was observed in children aged <1 year. No other associations between CT-based body metrics and postoperative outcomes were shown. In children aged <1 year with cirrhotic liver disease undergoing LT, preoperative CT-based body metrics were correlated with moderate to severe postoperative infections (ScFI) and with longer duration of hospital and ICU stay (SMI), and thus can be considered important tools for pre-LT risk assessment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to assess patients on the waiting list for liver transplant (LTx) according to bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA), as well as to verify the association between the placement of the vectors on the graph with clinical outcomes and identify the predictors to vector placement in quadrant 4 (Q4; indicating more hydration and less cellularity). METHODS This was a retrospective observational study including 129 patients ≥20 y of age awaiting LTx. Patients' nutritional status was assessed by using different tools, including single-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis and the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA). Clinical data were registered. The BIVA was evaluated by comparing the individual vectors plotted for all patients to the tolerance ellipses of 50%, 75%, and 95% of the reference healthy population. The quadrant of the vector for each patient was registered. RESULTS The majority of the vectors were placed in Q1 (n = 54; 41.9%) and Q4 (n = 39; 30.2%). The presence of ascites or edema (hazard ratio [HR], 2.43; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.15-5.12; P = 0.019) and the BIVA vector placed in Q4 in any ellipse (HR, 2.10; 95% CI, 1.07-4.09; P = 0.029) were independent predictors for mortality on the waiting list or ≤1 y after LTx. BIVA was not associated with longer hospital length of stay. The predictors of vector placement in Q4 were higher age, malnutrition according to SGA, and presence of ascites or edema. CONCLUSION Patients on the waiting list for LTx with BIVA vectors placed in Q4, in the 50%, 75%, or 95% tolerance ellipses, presented a worse prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Malnutrition is highly prevalent in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD) and associated with impaired clinical outcome. Previous studies focused on one component of body composition and not in combination with nutritional intake, while both are components of the nutritional status. We aimed to evaluate the most important risk factors regarding body composition (muscle mass, muscle quality and fat mass) and nutritional intake (energy and protein intake) for waiting list mortality in patients with ESLD awaiting liver transplantation (LTx). METHODS Consecutive patients with ESLD listed for LTx between 2007 and 2014 were investigated. Muscle mass quantity (Skeletal Muscle Mass Index, SMI), and muscle quality (Muscle Attenuation, MA), and various body fat compartments were measured on computed tomography using SliceOmatic. Nutritional intake (e.g. energy and protein intake) was assessed. Multivariable stepwise forward Cox regression analysis was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS 261 Patients (mean age 54 years, 74.7% male) were included. Low SMI and MA were found to be statistically significant predictors of an increased risk for waiting list mortality in patients with ESLD, with a HR of 2.580 (95%CI 1.055-6.308) and HR of 9.124 (95%CI 2.871-28.970), respectively. No association between percentage adipose tissue, and protein and energy intake with waiting list mortality was found in this study. CONCLUSION Both low muscle quantity and quality, and not nutritional intake, were independent risk factors for mortality in patients with ESLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In patients with cirrhosis, there is a clinical concern that the development of protein-calorie malnutrition will affect the immune system and predispose these patients to increased infectious outcomes. AIMS In this study, we evaluate the effects of malnutrition on the infectious outcomes of patients admitted with cirrhosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study used the 2011-2017 National Inpatient Sample to identify patients with cirrhosis. These patients were stratified using malnutrition (protein-calorie malnutrition, cachexia, and sarcopenia) and matched using age, gender, and race with 1:1 nearest neighbor matching method. The endpoints included mortality and infectious outcomes. RESULTS After matching, there were 96 842 malnutrition-present cohort and equal number of controls. In univariate analysis, the malnutrition cohort had higher hospital mortality [10.40 vs. 5.04% P < 0.01, odds ratio (OR) 2.18, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.11-2.26]. In multivariate models, malnutrition was associated with increased mortality [P < 0.01, adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.32, 95% CI 1.27-1.37] and infectious outcomes, including sepsis (P < 0.01, aOR 1.94, 95% CI 1.89-2.00), pneumonia (P < 0.01, aOR 1.68, 95% CI 1.63-1.73), UTI (P < 0.01, aOR 1.39, 95% CI 1.35-1.43), cellulitis (P < 0.01, aOR 1.09, 95% CI 1.05-1.13), cholangitis (P < 0.01, aOR 1.39, 95% CI 1.26-1.55), and clostridium difficile (P < 0.01, aOR 2.11, 95% CI 1.92-2.31). CONCLUSION The results of this study indicate that malnutrition is an independent risk factor of hospital mortality and local/systemic infections in patients admitted with cirrhosis.

Abstract
Background Autosomal dominant polycystic liver disease (ADPLD) is characterized by multiple cysts in the liver without (or only occasional) renal cysts. At least seven genes are associated with high risk for developing ADPLD; however, clear genetic involvement is undetermined in more than 50% of ADPLD patients. Methods To identify additional ADPLD-associated genes, we collected 18 unrelated Chinese ADPLD cases, and performed whole exome sequencing on all the participants. After filtering the sequencing data against the human gene mutation database (HGMD) professional edition, we identified new mutations. We then sequenced this gene in family members of the patient. Results Among the 18 ADPLD cases analyzed by whole exome sequencing, we found 2 cases with a PRKCSH mutation (~11.1%), 2 cases with a PKD2 mutation (~11.1%), 1 case with both PKHD1 and PKD1 mutations (~5.6%), 1 case with GANAB mutation (~5.6%), 1 case with PKHD1 mutation (~5.6%), and 1 case with PKD1 mutations (~5.6%). We identified a new PKHD1 missense mutation in an ADPLD family, in which both patients showed innumerable small hepatic cysts, as reported previously. Additionally, we found that PRKCSH and SEC63 mutation frequencies were lower in the Chinese population compared with those in European and American populations. Conclusions We report a family with ADPLD associated with a novel PKHD1 mutation (G1210R). The genetic profile of ADPLD in the Chinese population is different from that in European and American populations, suggesting that further genetic research on genetic mutation of ADPLD in the Chinese population is warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Disease-related malnutrition is common in cirrhosis. Multiple studies have evaluated nutritional screening tools (NSTs, rapid bedside tests targeting who needs assessment) and nutritional assessment tools (NATs, used in diagnosing malnutrition) as predictors of clinical outcome in this population. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of this literature with the aim of summarising the varying definitions of malnutrition across studies, the available evidence for NSTs and the ability of NSTs and NATs to predict clinical outcomes in cirrhosis. METHODS The primary outcome measures were pre- and post-transplant mortality with a range of secondary outcomes. Inclusion: cirrhosis over age 16. Exclusion: >25% with hepatocellular carcinoma, primarily laboratory test-based NATs or lack of screening, assessment or outcome criteria. RESULTS Eight thousand eight hundred fifty patients were included across 47 studies. Only 3 studies assessed NSTs. Thirty-two definitions for malnutrition were utilised across studies. NATs predicted pre-transplant mortality in 69% of cases that were assessed with a risk ratio (RR) of 2.38 (95% CI 1.96-2.89). NATs were prognostic for post-transplant mortality only 28% of the times they were assessed, with a RR of 3.04 (95% CI 1.51-6.12). CONCLUSIONS The cirrhosis literature includes limited data on nutrition screening and multiple definitions for what constitutes malnutrition using NATs. Despite this discordance, it is clear that malnutrition is a valuable predictor of pre-transplant mortality almost regardless of how it is defined. We require clinical and research consensus around the definition of malnutrition and the accepted processes and cut-points for nutrition screening and assessment in cirrhosis.

Abstract
Sarcopenia, frailty, and malnutrition are prevalent complications in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD) and are associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. It is valuable to measure nutritional status, sarcopenia, and frailty over time in order to create interventions tailored to individuals with ESLD. Evaluating sarcopenia and frailty in patients with ESLD is challenging. Further work is needed to perfect these assessments so that clinicians can incorporate these assessments into their decision-making and management plans for cirrhotic patients.

Abstract
A frequent complication in liver cirrhosis is malnutrition, which is associated with the progression of liver failure, and with a higher rate of complications including infections, hepatic encephalopathy and ascites. In recent years, the rising prevalence of obesity has led to an increase in the number of cirrhosis cases related to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Malnutrition, obesity and sarcopenic obesity may worsen the prognosis of patients with liver cirrhosis and lower their survival. Nutritional monitoring and intervention is therefore crucial in chronic liver disease. These Clinical Practice Guidelines review the present knowledge in the field of nutrition in chronic liver disease and promote further research on this topic. Screening, assessment and principles of nutritional management are examined, with recommendations provided in specific settings such as hepatic encephalopathy, cirrhotic patients with bone disease, patients undergoing liver surgery or transplantation and critically ill cirrhotic patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) classifies malnutrition severity via a simple bedside assessment. Phase angle (PhA) is an indicator of cell integrity and has been suggested to be indicator of nutritional status. OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship between PhA and SGA. METHODS Relevant studies published through October 31, 2017 were identified using 7 electronic databases. Articles were included for review if they included comparison data between SGA and PhA within adult disease populations. Evidence quality was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) guidelines and methodological quality was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2) tool. RESULTS 33 articles within four disease states (liver, hospitalization, oncology and renal) met inclusion criteria for review. Results were limited by restricting the database search to articles published in English only, and by the inherent difficulty of comparing 2 methods which are both influenced by the operator. CONCLUSION Based on GRADE guidelines, evidence quality received a grade of Low. Based on QUADAS-2, 61% of studies had high risk of bias in the index test (PhA), while all other domains had low risk. It is not possible to conclude that PhA is an accurate independent indicator of malnutrition. PROSPERO no. CRD42016050876.

Abstract
AIM Acute post liver transplant (LT) phase is characterized by hypermetabolism and increased nutrient requirements. This study aimed to provide the cardinal data on nutrition progression in the management of acute post-LT patients. METHODS This exploratory study recruited 54 adult acute post-LT recipients. The information regarding patient stay, weight status, biochemical parameters, and route of feeding was gathered. Recipients' dietary and nutrient intake was computed by 24-h dietary recall method. RESULTS The data exhibited a significant trend of lower hemoglobin, platelet, and albumin levels and increased bilirubin (T), alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and gamma-glutamyl transferase levels (P < 0.05). In acute post-LT patients, a significant decrease in weight status (P < 0.001*) was observed. The recipients' information on daily nutrition progression showed significantly lower intake of calorie, protein, fats, calcium (P < 0.05) and lower percentage adequacy of other nutrients as compared to the recommended guidelines. The energy and protein intake from the parenteral route of feeding significantly decreased and that of through oral route significantly increased (P < 0.05) from postoperative day (POD) 2 to POD 9 and POD 12. CONCLUSION There are scant data on nutrition management in acute post-LT phase. The present study provides the framework for the formulation of continuous, patient-centric, aggressive nutrition management interventions for acute post-LT recipients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD) have a compromised nutritional status because of the liver crucial role in regulating metabolic homeostasis and energy balance. DATA SOURCES A systematic review of literature based on extensive relevant articles published from 2001 to 2017 in English in PubMed database was performed by searching keywords such as liver disease, non-alcoholic liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, malnutrition, epigenetics, gut microbiota, and probiotics. RESULTS Liver transplantation would be one eligible therapy for ESLD patients, even if, the clinical outcome is negatively influenced by malnutrition and/or infections. The malnutrition is a condition of nutrient imbalance with a high incidence in ESLD patients. An accurate evaluation of nutritional status could be fundamental for reducing complications and prolonging the survival of ESLD patients including those undergoing liver transplantation. In addition, the interaction among nutrients, diet and genes via epigenetics has emerged as a potential target to reduce the morbidity and mortality in ESLD patients. The malnutrition induces changes in gut microbiota causing dysbiosis with a probable translocation of bacteria and/or pathogen-derived factors from the intestine to the liver. Gut microbiota contribute to the progression of chronic liver diseases as well as hepatocellular carcinoma. The administration of probiotics modulating gut microbiota could improve all chronic liver diseases. CONCLUSIONS This review provides an update on malnutrition status linked to epigenetics and the potential benefit of some probiotics on the management of ESLD patients. In support of this view and to reveal the constant and growing interest in this field, some clinical trials are reported.

Abstract
The present document is a second contribution collecting the recommendations of an expert panel of transplant hepatologists appointed by the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF) concerning the management of certain aspects of liver transplantation, including: the issue of prompt referral; the management of difficult candidates; malnutrition; living related liver transplants; hepatocellular carcinoma; and the role of direct acting antiviral agents before and after transplantation. The statements on each topic were approved by participants at the AISF Transplant Hepatology Expert Meeting organized by the Permanent Liver Transplant Commission in Mondello on 12-13 May 2017. They are graded according to the GRADE grading system.

Abstract
Background Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) are associated with poor postoperative survival. However, there are no standard criteria for diagnosis of PPCs. This retrospective study aimed to explore the reliability of the Melbourne Group Scale version 2 (MGS-2) for determining PPCs after OLT. Material/Methods A total of 121 patients were divided into 3 groups. In the PPC and non-PPC groups, PPCs were determined to be present or absent in accordance with both the MGS-2 and the conventional broad criteria for diagnosis of PPCs; in the potential-PPC group, PPCs were determined to be present only in accordance with the conventional broad criteria. The perioperative risk factors for PPCs and prognosis of patients in potential-PPC group were all compared with non-PPC groups and PPC groups. Results The preoperative characteristics of patients in the potential-PPC group were similar to those in non-PPC group. The length of intensive care unit stay (2.26±0.22 vs. 4.75±0.47 days; P=0.017), duration of hospitalization (33.33±1.70 vs. 48.78±2.53 days; P<0.001), and treatment cost (28.01±1.78 vs. 38.35±1.85×10 000 yuan; P=0.018) were significantly less in the potential-PPC group than in the PPC group. Furthermore, in accordance with the MGS-2 criteria for diagnosis of PPCs, patients with PPCs showed poorer overall survival rates than those without (P=0.038). Conclusions The MGS-2 appears to be a more suitable and reliable tool for diagnosis of PPCs and to identify the post-OLT patients with poorer perioperative characteristics and prognosis.
