Abstract
INTRODUCTION Azithromycin is an effective treatment for various respiratory conditions but its effect on cough is poorly understood. We synthesised data from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and noncomparative studies (NCT) examining its effect on objective and subjective cough. METHODS After prospective registration on PROSPERO, we searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CENTRAL for both RCTs and NCT trials examining the effect azithromycin on cough in respiratory disease. RESULTS We identified 1240 studies of which 6 (4 RCTs and 2 NCT studies) were included in the meta-analysis, with a total of 275 patients. Azithromycin was associated with significant improvement in Leicester Cough Questionnaire scores at follow-up when compared to baseline scores (SMD = 0.62 [95% CI 0.12 to 1.12], p = 0.01). However, when only RCTs were synthesised, no significant effect was observed (SMD = 0.12 [95% CI - 0.36 to 0.60], p = 0.62). There was no significant reduction in cough severity VAS score (SMD = - 0.39 [95% CI - 0.92 to 0.14], p = 0.15). There was no significant reduction in objective cough count (SMD = - 0.41 [95% CI - 1.04 to 0.32], p = 0.09). CONCLUSION Azithromycin therapy improves cough-related quality of life in various chronic respiratory diseases; however, there was no significant effect on cough outcomes when only data from RCTs were synthesised. We believe that to accurately identify which patients whose cough would benefit from azithromycin a large-scale clinical trial of patients with a broad spectrum of respiratory diseases, with sufficiently severe cough, should be undertaken with subgroup analysis of individual disease areas.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Otolaryngologists are vital to successfully managing chronic cough in adults. This review presents updates regarding rapidly evolving concepts in chronic cough. RECENT FINDINGS Significant growth is occurring in chronic cough research, strengthening the evidence of its major psychosocial impacts. Elucidation of the neural underpinnings of normal and abnormal cough within both the peripheral and central nervous systems highlight the previously underappreciated complexity of cough. Recent clinical practice recommendations emphasize personalized treatment approaches through addressing treatable traits of chronic cough. Investigations are ongoing to better distinguish chronic cough subgroups, and multiple types of important clinical outcome measures are being characterized. Newer research about chronic cough treatment encompasses pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions, including oral and inhaled medications, superior laryngeal nerve blocks, and behavioral therapy. SUMMARY As knowledge about chronic cough in adults continues to expand in both research and clinical practice, otolaryngologists can continue to raise awareness of the role of the larynx in cough and promote ongoing multidisciplinary collaborations. In the coming years, more pharmacologic options and personalized treatment approaches will likely emerge for chronic cough.

Abstract
This viewpoint paper considers the authors' perspectives on the potential role of smartphones, wearables, and other technologies in the diagnosis of cancer. We believe that these technologies could be valuable additions in the pursuit of early cancer diagnosis, as they offer solutions to the timely detection of signals or symptoms and monitoring of subtle changes in behavior that may otherwise be missed. In addition to signal detection, technologies could assist symptom interpretation and guide and facilitate access to health care. This paper aims to provide an overview of the scientific rationale as to why these technologies could be valuable for early cancer detection, as well as outline the next steps for research and development to drive investigation into the potential for smartphones and wearables in this context and optimize implementation. We draw attention to potential barriers to successful implementation, including the difficulty of the development of signals and sensors with sufficient utility and accuracy through robust research with the target group. There are regulatory challenges; the potential for innovations to exacerbate inequalities; and questions surrounding acceptability, uptake, and correct use by the intended target group and health care practitioners. Finally, there is potential for unintended consequences on individuals and health care services including unnecessary anxiety, increased symptom burden, overinvestigation, and inappropriate use of health care resources.

Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a heterogeneous respiratory disease driven by various genetic and environmental factors, presents significant challenges in diagnosis and management. Traditional approaches focused on phenotypic classification, but recent paradigms emphasize identifying and addressing treatable traits to personalize treatment strategies. Treatable traits facilitate personalized interventions, optimizing symptom control, and reducing exacerbation risk. Dyspnea and exacerbations, recognized as key traits, guide treatment decisions and follow-up management. Various interventions, including bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and lifestyle modifications, target specific traits like airway inflammation, mucus overproduction, and emphysema. Strategies for assessing and addressing treatable traits during initial encounters and follow-up visits enhance disease monitoring and treatment efficacy. Comprehensive trait assessment demands resources and specialized monitoring, posing barriers to widespread implementation. The lack of standardized protocols and evolving evidence further complicates decision-making and clinical practice. Despite these challenges, the shift toward treatable traits-based management signifies a pivotal advancement in COPD care, emphasizing holistic approaches tailored to individual patient needs. Recognizing and addressing treatable traits offers personalized interventions, enhancing symptom control and disease management. Embracing treatable traits-based approaches holds promise for improving clinical outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with COPD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to examine applications of cough sounds towards screening tools and diagnostics in the biomedical and engineering literature, with particular focus on disease types, acoustic data collection protocols, data processing and analytics, accuracy, and limitations. DATA SOURCES PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, IEEE Xplore, Engineering Village, and ACM Digital Library were searched from inception to August 2021. REVIEW METHODS A scoping review was conducted on screening and diagnostic uses of cough sounds in adults, children, and animals, in English peer-reviewed and gray literature of any design. RESULTS From a total of 438 abstracts screened, 108 articles met inclusion criteria. Human studies were most common (77.8%); the majority focused on adults (57.3%). Single-modality acoustic data collection was most common (71.2%), with few multimodal studies, including plethysmography (15.7%) and clinico-demographic data (7.4%). Data analytics methods were highly variable, with 61.1% using machine learning, the majority of which (78.8%) were published after 2010. Studies commonly focused on cough detection (41.7%) and screening of COVID-19 (11.1%); among pediatric studies, the most common focus was diagnosis of asthma (52.6%). CONCLUSION Though the use of cough sounds in diagnostics is not new, academic interest has accelerated in the past decade. Cough sound offers the possibility of an accessible, noninvasive, and low-cost disease biomarker, particularly in the era of rapid development of machine learning capabilities in combination with the ubiquity of cellular technology with high-quality recording capability. However, most cough sound literature hinges on nonstandardized data collection protocols and small, nondiverse, single-modality datasets, with limited external validity. Abstract
BACKGROUND Sex-related disparities in the prevalence of chronic cough have been consistently reported globally, with varying male-to-female ratios. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate sex-related differences by comparing correlations between cough-related symptoms in males and females of different age groups. DESIGN Adult patients with chronic cough who completed the Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ) were recruited from 16 respiratory centers. METHODS Correlation networks were constructed based on Spearman's correlation coefficients in males and females of various age groups. The distinct relationships of cough-related symptoms between subgroups were validated by an independent cohort. RESULTS A total of 255 patients were enrolled in this study (male-to-female ratio, 1:1.71). The following LCQ items were highly correlated: embarrassment and interference with daily work, anxiety, and interference with overall life enjoyment/feeling of being fed up, interference with daily work and overall life enjoyment, interference with overall life enjoyment and feeling of being fed up, and feeling of being fed up and annoyance to partner/family/friends. The patterns of these correlations between LCQ items varied in males and females of different ages. The strongest interrelationship was observed in male patients aged >50 years old, which was similar to those in the validation cohort. CONCLUSION The correlation patterns between cough-related symptoms vary significantly according to age and sex. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the development of cough-related symptoms may facilitate sex- and age-specific strategies for chronic cough.

Abstract
Cough is one of the most important airway defensive reflexes aimed at removing foreign particles or endogenously produced materials from the airways and provides protection against aspiration. Generally considered, cough is a vital physiological defensive mechanism for lung health. However, in case of cough dysregulation this reflex can become pathological and leads to an adverse influence on daily life. Therefore, it is necessary to effectively evaluate the severity of cough for its diagnosis and treatment. There are subjective and objective methods for assessing cough. These methods should help describe the heterogeneity of cough phenotypes and may establish better treatment by monitoring response to nonpharmacological or pharmacological therapies. It is important to keep in mind that the clinical assessment of cough should include both tools that measure the amount and severity of the cough. The importance of a combined subjective and objective evaluation for a comprehensive assessment of cough has been advocated in the guidelines of the European Respiratory Society on cough evaluation. This review article provides an overview of subjective and objective methods for assessing and monitoring cough in children and adults comparing to animal models.
