3-Aminobenzeneboronic Acid Functionalized MoS2 Quantum Dot as Fluorescent Nanoprobe for the Determination of o-Dihydroxybenzene

In this work, by functionalizing MoS₂ quantum dot with 3-aminobenzeneboronic acid, a novel multifunctional quantum dot (denoted as B-MoS₂ QD) was obtained and used successfully for a fluorescence nanoprobe for detecting o-dihydroxybenzene (o-DHB). Transmission electron microscopy, fluorescence spectrum, UV-vis spectrum and fluorescence lifetime were used to investigate the prepared nanoprobe. The results show that the B-MoS₂ QD nanoprobe can exhibit strong fluorescence and excellent light fastness owing to the coupled effect from the MoS₂ QDs and boronic acid; interestingly, the vicinal diols structure from its surface can bridge covalently with o-DHB, resulting in the fluorescence quenching of B-MoS₂ QDs and selective recognition toward o-DHB. With the increasing of o-DHB concentration, the nanoprobe fluorescence would gradually decrease. By measuring the fluorescence intensity of B-MoS₂ QDs, a wide linear range from 0.1 to 200.0 μM with a low detection limit of 0.025 μM was obtained for o-DHB analysis; meanwhile, this fluorescence nanoprobe possesses excellent selectivity for the selective detection of o-DHB from its analogues.

Polyphenol oxidase-based electrochemical biosensors: A review

The detection of phenolic compounds is relevant not only for their possible benefits to human health but also for their role as chemical pollutants, including as endocrine disruptors. The required monitoring of such compounds on-site or in field analysis can be performed with electrochemical biosensors made with polyphenol oxidases (PPO). In this review, we describe biosensors containing the oxidases tyrosinase and laccase, in addition to crude extracts and tissues from plants as enzyme sources. From the survey in the literature, we found that significant advances to obtain sensitive, robust biosensors arise from the synergy reached with a diversity of nanomaterials employed in the matrix. These nanomaterials are mostly metallic nanoparticles and carbon nanostructures, which offer a suitable environment to preserve the activity of the enzymes and enhance electron transport. Besides presenting a summary of contributions to electrochemical biosensors containing PPOs in the last five years, we discuss the trends and challenges to take these biosensors to the market, especially for biomedical applications.

Sensitive Detection of Caffeic Acid and Rutin via the Enhanced Anodic Electrochemiluminescence Signal of Luminol

The electrooxidation of phenolic groups of caffeic acid and rutin promote anodic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) luminol substantially. A sensitive, and cost-effective ECL method has thus been developed to detect caffeic acid, ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 μM, with a detection limit of 0.1 μM and rutin ranging from 0.2 to 25 μM with a detection limit of 0.12 μM. Contrarily, phenolic compounds quench the weak cathodic ECL of luminol. Both of anodic and cathodic ECL mechanisms of luminol in the presence of phenolic compounds are analyzed. The method based on the boomed anodic ECL of luminol is comparable to those based on Ru(bpy)₃²⁺ and S₂O₈^2-/O₂ systems. A lower onset potential and price than the other ECL reagents would realize its widely applications in the detection of phenolic compounds in food and medicine.

A decoupler-free simple paper microchip capillary electrophoresis device for simultaneous detection of dopamine, epinephrine and serotonin

This paper demonstrates a new and simplified configuration for capillary electrophoresis-amperometric detection (CE-AD) using a paper microfluidic chip incorporating inexpensive wax printing and screen printing based methods and then used for electrophoretic separation and simultaneous in-channel amperometric detection of three clinically relevant neurochemicals in a single run without using any decouplers. Detection of neurochemicals e.g., dopamine, epinephrine and serotonin is crucial for early prediction of neurological disorders including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, dementia, as well as progressive neuro-psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, as well as certain cardiovascular diseases. The plasma concentrations of such neurochemicals are as important as those present in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and can be useful for rapid and convenient biosensing. However, simultaneous detection of such neurochemicals in a complex mixture such as human serum requires their separation prior to detection. With the developed microchip, separation and detection of the neurochemicals were exhibited within 650 seconds without pre-treatment and the procedure was validated with spiked fetal bovine serum samples. Beside this, the developed paper microfluidic chip has potential to be integrated in point-of-care diagnosis with onsite detection ability. Moreover, the use of a straight channel capillary, a screen-printed carbon electrode without decoupler, in-channel amperometric detection and low sample volume requirements (2 μL) are shown as additional advantages.

Pyrolysis molecule of Torreya grandis bark for potential biomedicine

Torreya grandis is a unique tree species in China. Although full use has been made of the timber, the processing and utilization of the bark has not been effective. In order to explore a new way to utilize the bark of Torreya grandis, a powder of T. grandis bark was prepared and analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Differential scanning calorimetry (TG) and pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (PY-GC/MS) revealed many bioactive components in the bark of T. grandis, such as acetic acid, 2-methoxy-4-vinyl phenol, D-mannose, and furfural. These substances have potential broad applications in the chemical industry, biomedicine, and food additives. The chemical constituents of the bark of T. grandis suggest a theoretical basis for the future development and utilization of the bark of T. grandis.
