Controlling Atomic-Scale Restructuring and Cleaning of Gold Nanogap Multilayers for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Sensing

We demonstrate the reliable creation of multiple layers of Au nanoparticles in random close-packed arrays with sub-nm gaps as a sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate. Using oxygen plasma etching, all the original molecules creating the nanogaps can be removed and replaced with scaffolding ligands that deliver extremely consistent gap sizes below 1 nm. This allows precision tailoring of the chemical environment of the nanogaps which is crucial for practical Raman sensing applications. Because the resulting aggregate layers are easily accessible from opposite sides by fluids and by light, high-performance fluidic sensing cells are enabled. The ability to cyclically clean off analytes and reuse these films is shown, exemplified by sensing of toluene, volatile organic compounds, and paracetamol, among others.

Development of a multi-functional SPR sensing system using a square glass rod with two gold-deposited adjacent faces

A multi-functional sensing system based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon using a square glass rod with two gold-deposited adjacent faces was developed in this work. This sensor system consists of a unpolarized light-emitting diode, a gold-deposited square glass rod, a polarizing beam splitter, and two photodiodes. The SPR responses of two adjacent faces are independently and simultaneously measured with a polarizing beam splitter and two PDs. The response property of the gold-deposited face was confirmed using methanol solutions of ethylene glycol. The response curve of the sensor of the 45 nm gold-deposited face was compared with the theoretical curve calculated using multi-layer Fresnel equations. It was confirmed that the experimental curve is similar to the theoretical one. An evaluation was carried out on the square glass rod, which has an unmodified face and Teflon AF2400 coated gold-deposited face as multi-functional sensor. It was confirmed that this sensor can simultaneously measure the ethanol concentration in the glucose mix solution and refractive index of the sample from the calibration curve. Since this sensor can measure multiple components simultaneously, expected applications to various fields include medical diagnosis, food analysis, and environmental monitoring.

A Portable Reflective Absorbance Spectrophotometric Smartphone Device for the Rapid and Highly Accurate Determination of Amlodipine in Pharmaceutical Formulation and Human Urine Samples

The simple reflective absorbance spectrophotometric smartphone device for point-of-monitoring amlodipine is presented here for the first time. The immediate analysis of amlodipine in the human urine of the patients who suffered severe side effects of this drug is very important for the diagnosis, treatment, and reduction of the death rate. This measurement technique is based on the charge-transfer complex between amlodipine and picric acid, which forms a yellow product. This product can absorb light intensity from an LED strip and measure through the Blue channel from the RGB mode with a smartphone application. The linear relationship for amlodipine monitoring was found in a wide range from 100.0 μg L^-1 to 140.0 mg L^-1 (R² = 0.999), and the limit of detection was found to be 25.0 μg L^-1. Our proposed method can be applied to different smartphone brands with consistent sensitivity of amlodipine detection. Additionally, the determination of amlodipine in pharmaceutical formulations and human urine samples was demonstrated by our proposed method. The recoveries were indicated in the range of 98.60 - 100.00%, which is at the acceptable level for pharmacy. This method offers an interweaving of basic technology and chemical analysis with being environmentally friendly due to reducing the complex instrument and the amount of organic waste compared to the chromatographic technique and efficient use for the detection of amlodipine. Hence, this method can be applied for prompt medical diagnoses and laboratories with limited budget resources.

Characterization of Gold Oxides Prepared by an Oxygen-dc Glow Discharge from Gold Films Using a Gold Discharge Ring by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Gold oxides (0.1 - 2.0 nm thick) prepared from gold films by an oxygen-dc glow discharge using a gold discharge ring for 0.17 - 30 min at room temperature were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The oxide thickness increased with increasing discharge time in contrast to the use of an aluminum ring, and thicker oxide films were obtained. The O 1s spectra show four components: I, II, III, and IV. Components I, II, and IV appear during the early formation periods (≤0.5 min). Components I and II are stable and assigned to hydroxyl groups on the surfaces. Component IV changes into component III (gold oxide) after longer discharge times (≥1 min). The gold oxides (2.0 nm thick) decompose after 15 d at room temperature and decompose immediately at temperatures exceeding 117°C. They also decompose under ultraviolet light irradiation (254, 302, and 365 nm) and decompose more rapidly in water vapor at the shorter wavelengths. The thicker nature of the gold oxides is advantageous for their preservation, and they were preserved in their oxidized state for 196 d in anhydrous dodecane in a dark atmosphere.
