Abstract
Bisphenols are industrial chemicals that are produced in large quantities and have been detected in all parts of the environment as well as in a multitude of different organisms including humans and fish. Several bisphenols, such as bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol F, have been shown to disrupt endocrine systems thereby affecting development and reproduction. While numerous studies investigated the effect of bisphenols on estrogen signaling, their impact on the thyroid hormone system (THS), which is vital for neurodevelopment including sensory development, has been explored to a lesser extent. The present work selected BPA as a representative for structurally similar bisphenols and assessed its impact on the THS as well as sensory development and function in zebrafish. To this end, zebrafish were exposed to BPA until up to 8 days post fertilization (dpf) and thyroid hormone levels, eye morphology, and sensory-mediated behaviors were analyzed. Zebrafish larvae exposed to BPA showed altered retinal layering, decreased motility across varying light conditions, and a loss of responsiveness to red light. Furthermore, whole-body levels of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and 3,5-diiodothyronine (3,5-T2) were significantly decreased in 5 dpf zebrafish. Taken together, BPA disrupted THS homeostasis and compromised visual development and function, which is pivotal for the survival of fish larvae. This work underlines the necessity for ongoing research on BPA and its numerous substitutes, particularly concerning their effects on the THS and neurodevelopment, to ensure a high level of protection for the environment and human health.

Abstract
In 2015, EFSA established a temporary tolerable daily intake (t-TDI) for BPA of 4 μg/kg body weight (bw) per day. In 2016, the European Commission mandated EFSA to re-evaluate the risks to public health from the presence of BPA in foodstuffs and to establish a tolerable daily intake (TDI). For this re-evaluation, a pre-established protocol was used that had undergone public consultation. The CEP Panel concluded that it is Unlikely to Very Unlikely that BPA presents a genotoxic hazard through a direct mechanism. Taking into consideration the evidence from animal data and support from human observational studies, the immune system was identified as most sensitive to BPA exposure. An effect on Th17 cells in mice was identified as the critical effect; these cells are pivotal in cellular immune mechanisms and involved in the development of inflammatory conditions, including autoimmunity and lung inflammation. A reference point (RP) of 8.2 ng/kg bw per day, expressed as human equivalent dose, was identified for the critical effect. Uncertainty analysis assessed a probability of 57-73% that the lowest estimated Benchmark Dose (BMD) for other health effects was below the RP based on Th17 cells. In view of this, the CEP Panel judged that an additional uncertainty factor (UF) of 2 was needed for establishing the TDI. Applying an overall UF of 50 to the RP, a TDI of 0.2 ng BPA/kg bw per day was established. Comparison of this TDI with the dietary exposure estimates from the 2015 EFSA opinion showed that both the mean and the 95th percentile dietary exposures in all age groups exceeded the TDI by two to three orders of magnitude. Even considering the uncertainty in the exposure assessment, the exceedance being so large, the CEP Panel concluded that there is a health concern from dietary BPA exposure.

Abstract
The stress response in the brain is not fully understood, although stress is one of the risk factors for developing mental disorders. On the other hand, the stimulation of the olfactory system can influence stress levels, and a certain smell has been empirically known to have a stress-suppressing effect, indeed. In this review, we first outline what stress is and previous studies on stress-responsive biomarkers (stress markers) in the brain. Subsequently, we confirm the olfactory system and review previous studies on the relationship between smell and stress response by species, such as humans, rats, and mice. Numerous studies demonstrated the stress-suppressing effects of aroma. There are also investigations showing the effects of odor that induce stress in experimental animals. In addition, we introduce recent studies on the effects of aroma of coffee beans and essential oils, such as lavender, cypress, α-pinene, and thyme linalool on the behavior and the expression of stress marker candidates in the brain. The transfer of volatile components into the brain is also discussed while using the results of thyme linalool as an example. These studies may provide a good opportunity to connect chemical research at the molecular level with neuropharmacological approaches in the future.

Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) interferes the function and development of the central nervous system (CNS), resulting in behavioral abnormalities and memory loss. S-nitrosylation of protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) is increased in brains with sporadic Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. The aim of the present study was to clarify the role of nitric oxide (NO) in BPA-induced neurotoxicity. Since rotenone induces NO-mediated neurodegeneration through S-nitrosylation of PDI, it was used as a positive control. First, rats were treated with BPA and rotenone, and S-nitrosylation of PDI was detected in rat brain microsomes. BPA and rotenone decreased RNase oxidation activity of PDI concomitant with S-nitrosylation of PDI. Next, to clarify S-nitrosylation of PDI by BPA and rotenone in rat brains, we treated the rat pheochromocytoma cell line PC12 and primary cultured neuron cells from the rat hippocampus with BPA (5 and 10 μM) and rotenone (100 or 200 nM). BPA induced S-nitrosylation of PDI, while NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA), a NOS inhibitor, exerted the opposite effects. Finally, to evaluate the toxicity of BPA in the CNS, we investigated its effects on neurite outgrowth of PC12 and primary cultured neuron cells. BPA inhibited neurite outgrowth of these cells, while L-NMMA reversed this inhibition. The involvement of PDI activity in neurite outgrowth was also examined, and bacitracin, a PDI inhibitor, is shown to decrease neurite outgrowth. Furthermore, the overexpression of PDI, but not a catalytically inactive PDI mutant, enhanced neurite outgrowth. These results suggested that S-nitrosylation of PDI induced by excessive NO caused BPA-induced neurotoxicity.
